U.S. military command in Afghanistan to revise count of Taliban attacks -- whoops, jihadists aren't in decline after all

Sorry, folks, we aren't winning after all. Not that we really even want to. "AP Newsbreak: Drop in Taliban attacks incorrect," by Robert Burns for the Associated Press, February 26:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S.-led military command in Afghanistan incorrectly reported a decline last year in Taliban attacks and is preparing to publish corrected numbers that could undercut its narrative of a Taliban in steep decline.

After finding what they called clerical errors, military officials in Kabul said Tuesday that a 7 percent drop in "enemy initiated attacks" for the period from January through December 2012 reported last month will be corrected to show no change in the number of attacks during that span.

The 7 percent figure had been included in a report posted on the coalition's website until it was removed recently without explanation. After The Associated Press inquired about the missing report, coalition officials said they were correcting the data and would re-publish the report.

"During a quality control check, ISAF recently became aware that some data was incorrectly entered into the database that is used for tracking security-related incidents across Afghanistan," said Jamie Graybeal, a spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition known officially as the International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF.

Graybeal said a subsequent audit determined that portions of the data from unilateral Afghan military operations were "not properly reflected" in the trends ISAF had reported in its monthly updates on security and violence.

"After including this unilateral ANSF (Afghan National Security Force) data into our database, we have determined that there was no change in the total number of EIAs (enemy initiated attacks) from 2011 to 2012," Graybeal said.

"This was a record-keeping error that we recognized and have now corrected," he added.

The coalition defines enemy initiated attacks as attacks by small arms, mortars, rockets and improvised explosive devices, or IEDs. But it does not include IEDs that are found and cleared before they explode.

Trends in Taliban attacks are one yardstick used by ISAF to measure war progress. Others include the state of security in populated areas, the number of coalition and Afghan casualties, the degree to which civilians can move about freely, and the performance of Afghan security forces.

Graybeal said that even though the number of 2012 Taliban attacks was unchanged from 2011, "our assessment of the fundamentals of campaign progress has not changed. The enemy is increasingly separated from the population and the ANSF are currently in the lead for the vast majority of partnered operations."

Wishful thinking.

Mark Twain said that there were lies, damned lies, and statistics. But it's not the stats that matter, it's the religious basis from which the Taliban take their orders to attack non-Muslims, and Muslims who aren't Muslim enough!

Clowns all round!

This is exactly the tactic took by Robert McNamara to fight the Vietnam war: accountants and statisticians are the main warriors, with US soldiers there to collect data.

We have no national interests in Afghanistan. The real international terrorists are now holed up safely in Pakistan, protected by our "ally". It makes no difference to the US if the Afghans wrap their women up and keep them covered and pregnant, as long as we keep them in Afghanistan and out of civilized countries. Unfortunately, by engaging in a useless "civil" war, we are setting ourselves up to receive millions of Afghan "refugees" who are no different from the very people we are fighting.

The idea (and real possibility) of Afghan 'refugees' is repulsive to say the least. When the failed fiasco called the "Viet Nam War" ended in defeat, the U.S. was forced to accept millions of Vietnamese refugees, who, contrary to what some believed at the time, turned out to be real assets to American society instead. On the other hand: Afghanistan 'political refugees' - an extremely dangerous stone-age, Islamic, cultural-destroying threat - could well sound the death knell for America as we know it. God help us in our own insanity for failed 'nation-building ‘experiments - it just won't work.

Ideological warfare is the way to defeat Islam. Military efforts are only half of what needs to be done. Islam is the problem. Jihad is the problem. Without debunking jihad, there is no solution to ongoing jihadist warfare.

We should be leaving but Rasool O is going to extend the troops stay another hundred years or so...

From the start there was ever only one reason to be in Afghanistan: to bring the perpetrators and supporters of the perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks to quick justice.

This goal could have been largely met in the Tora Bora mountains in the Fall of 2001. Every moment since has been a waste of manpower, materiel, treasury and morale. It is difficult to believe that such squandering, followed by the needless, costly action in Iraq, was anything but deliberate. After all, both major parties in the US show evidence of infiltration by the Ikhwan.

The upside is that the service personnel returning from this theater and others are not at all fooled by the nonsense spoon-fed to the general Western public about the "beauty" of Mohammedism. Recall that Churchill wrote his excoriation of Islam AFTER his participation in the Sudan war in 1898.

I hope and pray that we have even now an individual or individuals as intelligent, experienced, brave, pugnacious and eloquent as Churchill who can remind the West that we are in a war for the survival of civilization on many different fronts, from Taliban fighters and their ilk throughout the world, to talimedia propaganda in the West.

If the truth about Islam and Mo is widely disseminated without the fear of PC mumbo jumbo police, it will be a death knell to islam. The problem in the west and many non-Muslim countries such as india is that Muslims are not shown to the general population as they really are. Nothing of this conditional description - only a few Muslims are jihadis and the rest are peaceful. Every Muslim will join jihad as his religious duty if he gets a chance. This can be easily seen from Islamic history of invasions, looting, murder, rape, intimidation, and other atrocities. This is how Islam was spread and this is how Islam is still alive and only if this is clearly told to people Islam will die!!I am hoping Muslims would be wise enough to understand how cruel, corrupt, terrorrit and vile Islam is!!!

The erroneous decline in Islamist attacks remained uncorrected just long enough to impress voters prior to the election. Lying Slime! What else should we expect from those who are too (pick one) [ignorant][complicit][fearful][greedy][power hungry] to recognize or publicly admit that mainstream Islam is at war with America.

well said. excellent!! you are 100% correct, they come here and f... everything up. They come from a s...hole to only turn our country to the same s...hole.

Looking back, they were fighting a war of attrition, doesn't work. You'd have to level the Himalayas to win against popular Jihad in Afghanistan.  If they were to hold a vote, Jihad would win popular support. Yes, this is an ideological war of Western civilization against a Stone Age primitive ideology. By obfuscating what really drives these "Allah Akbar" rag gun toting savages, there is no victory. Looking back, we should have exited Afghanistan after the first year, killed the snake head Bin Laden, and let them sort it out. Jihad is a worldwide pandemic, so this is an endless war. Cut your losses and isolate their whole miserable bloody world. And educate the public of the West what this war is really all about. Tell the truth about Islam, and focus on the Muslim Britherhood. Then victory is doable.

I had before been doubtful that the Koran actually says, the way it is structured, that the GOSPEL has NOT been CORRUPTED.But it is true,it does says,in effect, that the Gospel has NOT been corrupted. Here is a short explanation of why:

Hooray, the previous and next navigation links are back in comments! Thank you so much!

When we first went into Afghanistan after 9/11/2001, we had some business to transact there. That business wasn't building roads, schools and hospitals--that's Peace Corps stuff. This was supposed to be about justice and retribution,as I recall. We had the opportunity to settle a big share of that business at Tora Bora--and we failed. What have we accomplished since then? Especially when you consider that bin laden was found in Pakistan--of all places--under the hospitality of our "strategic partners" the beloved Pakistanis. And where, by the way, is mullah Omar, Osama's buddy and enabler?

I suppose it's easy to be an armchair strategist--anyone can play at it. It seems to me, though, that the right way to conduct this kind of business is to go in, set-up shop, get the bad guys, no holds barred, and get out. Define your goals and objectives, establish a time-line (not published!) and a budget, get the job done, and leave, lock, stock and barrel. And I would hope that there would be a big message from that as to the disadvantages of attacking this country.

We've been going nowhere in Afghanistan for over a decade now. We've been there so long that we've forgotten the original mission. Sometimes good business dictates that we recognize a bad loan, accept it for the sink-hole that it is, cut our losses and walk away.
Is there any good reason not to do just that, starting today?

'Clerical error' > ''Record-keeping error''. . Hmm.
