Canada won't follow U.S. lead in aiding Syrian jihadists

Stephen Harper, leader of the free world. "Too risky to fund Syrian rebels, Canada says," by Campbell Clark for The Globe and Mail, February 28 (thanks to Jerk Chicken):

The United States has shifted course to provide aid directly to Syria’s rebels, but Canada doesn’t have enough confidence in them to follow suit.

It is a rare international question where the two allies are taking different views: Canada, which was gung-ho about helping rebels in Libya, thinks it’s too risky to fund those in Syria.

On Thursday, Secretary of State John Kerry said the United States will for the first time send so-called non-lethal aid such as food and medical supplies directly to the Free Syrian Army, as well as provide $60-million to the political wing of the coalition seeking to unseat President Bashar al-Assad.

While that fell short of the pledges of arms and equipment that Syrian rebels really want, it marks a shift in U.S. policy to directly support rebels fighting the Assad regime.

“We do this because we need to stand on the side of those in this fight who want to see Syria rise again in unity and see a democracy and human rights and justice,” Mr. Kerry said after a meeting in Rome of countries supporting the opposition.

But Canada – unlike the United States, most of Europe and much of the Arab world – has never recognized the opposition’s umbrella organization, the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces, as the “legitimate representative” of Syrians. And it’s not about to follow the U.S. allies in sending aid to the Free Syrian Army, either.

“After 23 months of violence and 70,000 deaths, the answer to the crisis in Syria is not more violence,” said Rick Roth, a spokesman for Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird. “Canada is working to address the humanitarian crisis the conflict in Syria has produced.”

Ottawa has long expressed worries about the fractious nature of the Syrian opposition and about Islamist extremists in their midst. In December, when dozens of countries recognized the coalition, Mr. Baird said he was waiting for the opposition to be more inclusive to minorities and women, and denounce extremism.

The Harper government has not changed its stand – essentially, it still doesn’t trust the opposition, or feel confident it can send money to rebels without some of it ending up in the hands of Islamist fighters whom it views as a danger that could live on past the anti-Assad rebellion. Ottawa will still try to work with the Syrian opposition and fund efforts to aid refugees, government sources said, but hasn’t changed its mind on sending aid to rebels....

Mr. Kerry said one reason for sending money to the Syrian coalition is to try to counter the influence of extremists. “The stakes are really high. And we can’t risk letting this country, in the heart of the Middle East, be destroyed by vicious autocrats or hijacked by the extremists,” he said....

Yeah, if you send them money, they automatically won't be "extremists." Isn't that how it works? Did Boy Reza Aslan tell you that, Mr. Secretary?

"Canada won't follow U.S. lead in aiding Syrian jihadists"

Thank goodness. Maybe Harper has been reading the Qur'an, hadith and sira.

>>>>>

At least 75% of the Sira (biographies of Muhammad and quotes attributed to him) is about jihad.

The largest part of the Islamic texts (the Qur'an, hadith and sira) relate to the treatment of unbelievers, kafirs. Approximately 67% of the Qur'an written in Mecca is about the unbelievers, or politics. Of the Qur'an of Medina, 51% is devoted to the unbelievers.

Mohammed preached his religion for 13 years and garnered only 150 followers. But when he turned to politics and war, in 10 years time he became the first ruler of Arabia by averaging an event of violence every 7 weeks for 9 years. His success did not come as a religious leader, but as a political leader.

Political Islam asks: What is the real jihad? The jihad of inner spiritual struggle, or the jihad of war?

Statistical analysis of the Bukhari hadith (considered by Muslims to be the most authentic of the hadith collections) show that Muhammad repeatedly speaks of jihad. In Bukhari, 97% of the jihad references are about war, and 3% are about the inner struggle. So the statistical answer is that jihad is 97% war and 3% inner struggle.

There are 146 references to Hell in the Qur'an. Only 6% of those in Hell are there for moral failings — murder, theft, etc. The other 94% of the reasons for being in Hell are for the intellectual sin of disagreeing with Mohammed, a political crime.

Ex-Muslim Ali Sina's ongoing challenge to Muslims can be found over at Faith Freedom.org:

The Challenge

I receive many emails from angry Muslims, who sometimes beg me, and sometimes order me to remove this site. I consider both, pleading and bullying, signs of psychopathology. Argumentum ad baculum and argumentum ad misericordiam are both logical fallacies.

If you do not like this site and want me to remove it, instead of acting as a bully or as a victim, disprove my charges against Muhammad logically. Not only will I remove the site, I will publicly announce that Islam is a true religion. I will also pay

$50,000 U.S. dollars

to anyone who can disprove the following accusations that I have made against Muhammad. I accuse Muhammad of being:

a narcissist
a misogynist
a rapist
a pedophile
a lecher
a torturer
a mass murderer
a cult leader
an assassin
a terrorist
a madman
a looter

...These charges are irrefutable. You simply can’t disprove them because they are reported in Islamic sources and as such they are as good as confession...

Hurray for Harper! My tax dollars will not be going to support jihadis in Syria. So glad I voted for Mr. Harper. He seems to have a good understanding of islam.

Once again, Stephen Harper makes me proud to be a North American and an Anglophone. Kudos to our neighbors north of Line Forty-nine for electing someone with sense, when our country down here returned the O to the presidency.

Liberals always love to accuse Conservative Party governments of following US policy like obedient little toadys. Well, here you go! Thank you Mr Prime Minister!
I'll drop him a brief line of appreciation today at pm@pm.gc.ca. You can too!!

To be fair, I should also give a polite curtsey to PM Jean Cretien (who was generally vile) for keeping us out of Iraq and insolvency.

Nice to see that at least one country - Canada - is capable of learning from their mistakes. I'd love to see the faces of US officials if and when a Sunni Syrian regime refuses to cooperate w/ the US over the bombing of the barracks in Beirut or other Syrian terror activities backed by the Hafez al Assad regime.

This is veeeery interesting...and disturbing.
For once in my life, I am now cheering AGAINST the US-supported side!!!

Let's see:
1) Obama wears a ring with a Muslim inscription.
2) Hagel was given permission to visit Mecca, and we know that no non-Muslim is allowed to go there. So, what is going on?
3)
4)
...46 months to go before we can change the guard.

The $85 billion in US cutbacks doesn't extend to stopping sending money to violent jihadists I see. He doeesn't consider all he is doing is arming the extremists, just like US funds arming the Taliban via the Pakistan ISI? The man is an idiot.

Canada is a lucky country to have Stephen Harper as PM. During the Syria conflict,Syrian Christians have largely stuck by President Bashar Assad, in large part because they fear the rising power of Muslim hard-liners and groups with al-Qaida-style ideologies within the uprising against his rule. Many Christians worry they will be marginalized or even targeted if the country's Sunni Muslim majority, which forms the majority of the opposition, takes over.Christians, who make up about 10 percent of Syria's population of more than 22 million, say they are particularly vulnerable to the violence that has been sweeping the country since March 2011. They are fearful that Syria will become another Iraq, with Christians caught in the crossfire between rival Islamic groups Christians and other minorities have generally supported Assad's regime in the past because it promoted a secular ideology that was seen as giving minorities a degree of protection.

The regime and ruling elite are dominated by the Alawite sect, itself a minority offshoot of Shiite Islam to which Assad belongs, but it has brought Christians and other minorities — as well as Sunni Muslims — into senior positions.

Christians have flourished under the Assad regime, which came to power four decades ago under Assad's father, Hafez. The regime divided economic privileges among minorities and certain Sunni families in exchange for giving up political power.
A Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman described the Obama administration's pledge of $60 million in assistance to Syria's political opposition as encouraging "extremists to seize power by force."
It is unfortunate USA always sides against Christians like they did in Kosavo.

I hope the Canadians who post here won't mind my saying that I, an American, would gladly exchange Obama for Harper as head of the American government. Harper is a far more impressive human being than Obama.

God bless Harper and all who voted for him.

look for Harper's picture to be added to Islam's 'Wanted Dead or Alive' poster...if it's not already there....

It is good to see a Western leader take a firm stand againt funneling aid to rabid Muslims...

The meaning here is that Obama is getting bolder about openly supporting and allying with the Muslim Brotherhood.

He's not afraid of impeachment. Neither does he expect any significant opposition.

I think it's unfair to just target Obama for wanting to inject the US into the Syrian conflict. McCain certainly would be criticizing the US for not jumping in fast enough, and the Republicans are silent on the matter. Mitt Romney advocated supporting the Syrian rebels:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/oct/08/mitt-romney-arm-syrian-rebels

I truly don't understand why US "leaders" are so interesting in jumping into endless quagmires of Muslim societies, hoping to wean them off Sharia law and the worst excesses of Islamic tradition. Why is it that the US is so anxious to throw money and influence when Muslims kill each other?

There is something else to consider, if you value the lives of Syrians. By leaving the sides alone, one side or another will achieve victory fairly soon, and the war will be over. By giving marginal military support to the rebels through bombing and air campaigns, and small grants of money and supplies, the US is actually extending the war. The only conclusion is that the US values a change of regime more than it does Syrian lives.

Well said Kephna and good idea about contacting Harper. I just did. Following is my message.

----------------------------------------------
"Well done Mr. Harper. I trust this is partly based on your recognition of the threat Islam poses to western civilization. There is a growing groundswell of awareness, amongst educated, middle-class Canadians, Americans and our antecedents in Europe that Islam is the greatest totalitarian threat the world has ever faced; much worse than Communism and National Socialism (Nazism). I appreciate the finest leadership Canada has produced in my lifetime. Max" Max.

Sorry y'all to burst your bubble re Harper but he is all suck and blow. He talks a good talk but that is it. He grovels at the feet of Chinese. He pretends to get tough on immigration fraud etc. but then quietly opens the gates to even more immigration re "family reunification" "refugee" barf, barf, etc. Don't believe the hype on these glowing articles. Jason Kenney, Minister on Immigration, is a master at talking out of both sides of his mouth. He lets in over half a million immigrants a year (the vast majority are from the third world) when there are no jobs here for Canadians who were born here. Vast majority of immigrants Harper lets in are from China, India, Africa and muslim countries. Not a day that goes by when I don't see full niquabs not just one but several. I live in an apartment building where I can count on one hand the number of white families. There are endless programs and services for immigrants and refugees here but practically none for Canadians who need help.

You praise him because of a news story here or there. Give your heads a shake, Harper is just as much a sell out as any other liberal vote grabbing bleeding heart politician, he is just better at hiding his moves.

1) Obama wears a ring with a Muslim inscription.

No he doesn't. His ring is either Majapahit (1293 - 1527), or a copy of a Majapaht design.

And for all the people who see this as reinforcing a Muslim connection, the Majapahit was a Hindu empire. Islam did not become the dominant religion until almost a century after the decline of the Majapahit.

Could be because Chuck Hagel Owns 90% of the real estate in MECCA

Hagel was Obama’s roommate when they lived in Pakistan.

Hagel forged Obama's birth certificate.

Feel free to supply examples of how he ‘grovels’ at the feet of the Chinese. He didn’t kill the nexon deal, due to the law allowing the sale. The law has since been changed. Since he doesn’t break Canadian law, he is therefore someone who ‘grovels’. Makes sense in only your world. Whichever one it is.

*****************

JK does not control the gates for immigration, and a Canadian would know that. He does not make the law on a whim, it requires the approval of parliament. What country do you live in?? Not Canada. No jobs for Canadians? For very low, unskilled positions that Canadians don’t want, short term workers are brought in to cover. For atlantic provinces where there is a tradition of working only long enough to get UI, maybe. Otherwise, a load of rubbish.

******************
Vast majority of immigrants Harper lets in are from China, India, Africa and muslim countries.

Harper and Co. have yet to clean up the disgusting mess left by the liberal party, and have only for a short time had a working majority. If you live in Canada, how come you don’t know that?? Or do you try very hard and succeed at being very ignorant?

Complete and utter load of garbage. There are urban myths about what is available for immigrants. You seem to think they are true. And Canadians who need help, usually get it. You either like lying about Canada, or know nothing about it.

You have NO credibility. None. I am not a huge fan of Harper, his failure to allow debate on abortion (which in Canada was ‘legalized’ through fraud and jury tampering), disgusts me. His failure to deal with fraud on too many aboriginal reservations, is disgraceful. Tolerating racist but politically correct laws and rulings from the overpaid and undereducated idiots within our judiciary, is inexcusable.
There are grounds to criticize him. And some idiot, who, if he is a Canadian is the only one out of the 30 million plus of us to use the phrase “y’all” hasn’t got the brains to do so.

It's great to have Harper in a majority. Here in the Great White North a PM with a majority is a pretty powerful person. He can pretty much do as he sees fit without pandering to the secessionists or the opposition parties. Time to make hay while the sun shines:)

Mr Harper had best speak to Julia in Australia and put her in the picture too. Mr Harper can go on his own little Jihad to help spread some common sense;

The y'áll thing was just a joke, for anyone who knows me posting here for a long time would know that.

I have lived in Toronto for almost fourty years and have seen this city go from a beautiful clean functioning one to a dirty, crime filled gridlocked overcrowded cesspit. I can go out in public anywhere and feel like a stranger in my own country. I am not going to apologize for my real life observations.

And Western Canadian, have you spent any time in Toronto? I am thinking probably not. And fyi, I grew up in Saskatoon til age 17 before moving here, so I think I know what I am talking about right back atcha IDIOT.

One correction to my original post. Harper has been letting in over a quarter million every year not half. Another fact: Immigration is COSTING us $23BILLION dollars a year, yes COSTING us, not benefitting! Is this insane or what! And we are a country of only 34 or so million people!

Another fact
http//immigrants-cost-23b-a-year-fraser-institute-report
which includes a large number from muslim countries.

The only way to help Muslims is to help them convert. Their religion enforces hatred and cruelty.

@ I not a Your crime ridden city is due to Jamaican gangs for the most part. Lived there years ago myself and do agree with you on some things. I do believe though that the majority of problems in your city has been because of your ex mayor, a left wing socialist idiot that allowed things to get the way they are. I too feel that I have walked into a third world country when I visit Toronto and wish it was the same as the sixties, but alas the immigration policies of former federal governments have reaped this bounty of cultural mish-mash.I do not know how to correct the situation but recently our federal government under Mr. Harper has changed immigration policies to move towards only allowing people that are a needed, through there skills, to immigrate. I have not liked a lot of things the Conservatives have done either, but on the immigration thing they have made positive steps.

windsorredneck, you know perfectly well that the mayor of Toronto has absolutely no say whatsoever about how many Jamaicans immigrate to Toronto or how many commit gun crime here. That all lies at the feet of Pierre Idiot Trudeau who opened the floodgates to third world immigration in his insane pursuit of his pie in the sky "just society" ideals. And we are reaping the crap of this ever since.

And since Harper and his eight years, since 2005 I never saw a hijab, niquabs, men and scraggly beards wearing pyjamas and knitted caps with a bunch of brats in tow but now I see many every day. Muslims and mosks everywhere all day long. Who am I going to believe, you or my lying eyes?

"The y'áll thing was just a joke, for anyone who knows me posting here for a long time would know that."

Oh, VERY funny. NOT. I have memories of a large number of long term posters on this site, and you are not one of them. You are at best very ordinary.

And other cities have remained clean and upbeat, which is hard to do even if the newcomers share the same background and values. Others (Winnipeg) are continuing to go down the toilet, due to aboriginals, not muslims or Jamacans. None of these are acceptable states of affairs, and are due primarily to the CIVIC government, same as in the US. ‘anywhere and feel like a stranger” ??? That is a load of bull. There are still areas not suffering from blight.

"And Western Canadian, have you spent any time in Toronto?

How nice of you to sign your name.

You have failed to respond to virtually all comments made. As expected.

Harper has not had a majority for eight years. Yes, your eyes do have a bad habit of lying. So does your keyboard.

And the efforts that Harper has made since GETTING A MAJORITY have at least made a start... you are so tied up in hatred you can't see a bloody thing. An effort has been started, but you reject it because it didn't take nano-seconds to complete.... Yes, you should sign your posts 'IDIOT'

And hopefully something can be done to get aboriginals in charge of their reserves (as opposed to cons and traitors to them), or off them if they choose, and end another financial obscenity.

Nice of you to admit that you were only out by a mere 100%...

Well, at least someone has integrity!

Canada won't follow U.S. lead in aiding Syrian jihadists
.................................

I'm certainly glad there is some sanity north of the 49th-parallel—since sanity is at such a premium these days south of it, under the current U.S. administration.

Ouch! A painful exchange between J not A and Western Canadian—two Canadian posters I have always respected.

Western Canadian, J not A *is* a longtime poster here. I've been reading her comments here for years.

I believe that her comments re Stephen Harper are due to some Anti-Jihad Americans—myself included, at times, given the appalling nature of the current occupant of the White House—to idealize the Canadian Prime Minister, and to rather overstate his Anti-Jihad savvy as a result.

And the "y'all" thing—which doesn't seem to be a big deal to me one way or the other, incidentally, was done tongue-in-cheek—I haven't seen her use that styling before, and certainly not habitually.

I consider J not A an absolutely staunch Anti-Jihadist, and I've been very impressed by many of Western Canadian's insights.

I'm not sure what "buttons" got pushed here, exactly, but I consider both of you strong allies.

You may have heard something about Canadians being polite and mild mannered...... Don't believe it. Think Vimy Ridge to Korea...

jna comments about Canada and Harper, are so far off the mark..... I have on occasion taken shots at people who bash the RC church, even though I do not have high regard for it. Reason (?) being, if you are going to complain, have grounds to, do it and do it right. Don't just throw stones.

ALWAYS enjoy your posts by the way.

I fully support Harper in this decision. These are not freedom fighters or democracy seekers fighting against the Syrian leadership. These are Islamists who want an Islamist state in Syria, similar to what Iran has. They are not our friends or allies and so I do not want my taxes going to them.

I guess you read that wrong. I said the immigration policies of former governments caused your cultural mish-mash. If you recall you said DIRTY,crime ridden city. The ex-mayor of your city (miller) caused a lot of areas of your city to fall into disrepair as well as his kow-towing to union thugs in the public service caused the near bankruptcy of your city. Mr Harper has not added any numbers to immigration as they are actually lower than previous years and the numbers are also lower from Middle East countries my friend. I can only take from this you are pro left wing, but dont let your political leanings blind you to something good done by Mr. Harper's government. We are in this together/

You are full of crap and you must vote NDP and are a raging socialist!

Clown!

Just noticed something rather unsettling about Kerry's last quote....

Well, any comment made by Kerry is unsettling..

----------
"The stakes are really high. And we can’t risk letting this country, in the heart of the Middle East, be destroyed by vicious autocrats or hijacked by the extremists,” he said....
--------------

Drop the ', in the heart of the Middle East' and you have:

The stakes are really high. And we can’t risk letting this country be destroyed by vicious autocrats or hijacked by the extremists,” he said....

Now he could be speaking about the U.S., Oz, Canada, France.... etc. Since he has no sense of irony (or any other kind of sense), it went right over his head, even as he said it.

And let’s face it, the battle we are in (aware of it or not) is one that, if we lose, has a cost that would make Churchill’s comment about ‘a new dark age’ and referencing a ‘perverted science’ even more fitting in this battle. If islam takes over, the human race is unlikely to recover or even survive.

Perhaps being a little less harsh with our own, and saving the cheap or brilliant shots for the REAL enemy, would be a good idea. Though like any family…. we don’t always like each other. And don’t have to. But be there for each other.

Thanks for your reply, Western Canadian.

I would ask you to reconsider re J not A, though—over all, if not anent these specific issues. She's an absolutely staunch Anti-Jihadist, and I'd stand with her any time.

I always look for your comments as well, Western Canadian.

More:
