Indonesia: Muslims destroy the nation’s last synagogue, an intended heritage site

IndonesiaSynagogue.jpg

A proud tradition of tolerance. “Indonesia’s last synagogue, an intended heritage site, destroyed,” from the Times of Israel, October 4 (thanks to B.D.):

Indonesia’s last synagogue has been destroyed, a Dutch news site reported.

Unidentified persons demolished the Beith Shalom synagogue in Surabaya on the island of Java to its foundations sometime earlier this year, according to a report on Indoweb.nl.

The synagogue has seen a number of anti-Israel protests staged in front of it and was sealed by Islamic hardliners sealed in 2009, according to the Jakarta Globe.

Reports suggesting the synagogue’s destruction have appeared in Indonesian media since May but were confirmed last week by the Indoweb.nl, which quoted the director of the Surabaya Heritage Society as saying that he intended to protest the demolition in talks with government officials.

“It is not clear by whom and when exactly the building was demolished,” Freddy Instanto told Indoweb.nl.

Yes, it’s a total mystery!

The City Council of Surabaya was in the process of registering the building as a heritage site. Istanto said that for that reason, the building “should have been protected.”

The Dutch news site also quoted Sachiroel Alim, the head of the Surabaya regional legislative council, as saying that it was unknown whether Muslim extremists had anything to do with the demolition.

Situated in in eastern Java, the small synagogue was built in the 19th century by Dutch Jews when Indonesia was still a Dutch colony. It had white-painted bricks a Star of David painted on the front door.

The first Jews arrived in Indonesia in the 17th century with the Dutch East India Company. During the 1930s and 1940s, the community grew due to new arrivals fleeing persecution in Europe, to reach an estimated 2,000 souls.

Currently, about 20 Jews are estimated to be living in Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim country, according to Beit Hatfutsot, the Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv. Judaism is not one of the six religions officially recognized in Indonesia: Islam, Christian, Catholic, Buddhism, Hinduism and Confucianism.

I was talking to my elderly left-leaning Jewish neighbor the other day about Islam, Obama, etc. He asked me, did I know which country has the largest Muslim population. I guessed Indonesia. We talked about Obama’s birth, his formative years, his Islamophila, etc., which he thought was rubbish. My neighbor does not have a computer. He reads the New York Times. If he did have a computer I would forward this to him. Do you think he will read this in the New York Times?

Does anyone expect Obama will condemn all the murderous persecution of Christians in the Middle East and North Africa?

Barack Obama, al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt (June 2009) excerpts:

“The United States does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements…As the Holy Koran tells us, “Be conscious of God and speak always the truth.” That is what I will try to do – to speak the truth as best I can…I have known Islam on three continents before coming to the region where it was first revealed…my father came from a Kenyan family that includes generations of Muslims.  As a boy, I spent several years in Indonesia and heard the call of the azaan at the break of dawn and at the fall of dusk…..And I consider it part of my responsibility as President of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear….Much has been made of the fact that an African-American with the name Barack Hussein Obama could be elected President….” etc.

So the last synagogue is kaput in Indonesia the world’s most populous Moslem nation and Prez Barack Hussein Obama’s birthplace.

When will the last synagogue go in Lebanon? That once great nation is seeing its last body parts disappear under water as the Holy Islam grinds to total and final victory.

How about the last synagogue in Iraq?

Things seem to be picking up pace. Turkey, Indonesia, Lebanon, Iraq, so many places are going down.

Been to Toronto or Montreal lately. Those places are loaded with them, and, given the birth rate differentials, get out your calculator and compute the tip-in date for Sharia in Canada.

From Paris to Malmo to Munich to Birmingham to London to Augusta to Queens to Virginiastan to Dearborn to Eden Prairie… we see unheroic beach landings coagulate. But not in San Francisco, that would be a buzzkill on the atmosphere, and tourist dollars are important.

We are all tourists now, taking the tour boat through a growing sea of tax mooch Moslems. A diaspora of hard breeding immigrants unhappy with their generous hosts, but willing to stay and continue with the benefits.

Except Christians, Muslims in Indonesia in general don’t know what a synagogue is, especially there is no Jewish community there. Only Islamists there have the knowledge of such thing through the funding of Saudi. To most in the neighborhood, it’s just an unoccupied old house. While most people subsist on less than $1 a day. Ordinary people have no clue as to what it means by something of historical value.

Here in the west people are off too far from the reality of harsh life abroad. Anything older than 50 years old is considered historical. I worked on several highway construction. In an excavation site where we found concrete buried 50 some years ago, we had to stop and report to authority. The area was cordoned. They sent out experts to study it. They wrote reports as thick as a phone book about it. Everything stopped because it’s of historical value.

When a tip of a broken arrowhead was found, archaeologists were summoned to the spot. I had to laugh remembering all my unsuccessful attempt in making India arrowheads in my practice of chipping stones. I could replicate it 1000 times, and they will blow it out of proportion. While Islamists are hateful fanatics, the west has gone insane.

Mohammedans have not destroyed the last Synagogue in Indonesia.

As of 2011, the only remaining synagogue in use in Indonesia is in the small, mostly Christian stronghold of Manado. Though there are only a few Jews in the city, the government has dedicated a good amount of monetary resources to bolstering the community and attracting Jewish tourism.

In Novermber 2010, the government paid nearly $150,000 to build a 62-foot-tall Menorah on a hill overlooking the city which is now possibly the largest permanent menorah in the entire world.

The non-Jewish residents of the city have also adopted the Jewish community. Flags of Israel can be spotted on motorcycle taxi stands, one near a six-year-old synagogue that has received a face-lift, including a ceiling with a large Star of David, paid for by local officials.

    Oh?

When the tsunami hit the first time around, and Western charities were helping Indonesian Muslims and reporters were going there to report on the event, one team of reporters happened upon an island and noticed that the bottoms of the sandals of the villagers had the Christian cross and the Jewish star of David carved into them. Carved into the bottom of the sandals. The hapless Western reporters asked them why they had these symbols carved into the bottoms of their sandals. The ordinary Muslims who “don’t know what a synagogue is” answered (to paraphrase): “So that we can walk all over the Jews and Christians and feel superior to them”.

I.e., Muslims don’t need to have Western-type “knowledge” of things to have assimilated and imbibed and absorbed attitudes and ideas and, as former Jihad Watch essayist Hugh Fitzgerald put it, “atmospherics” of the hateful intolerant supremacism in Islam.

But the comment by “Duke” — which name I have never seen before and which suddenly pops up out of nohwere — would have us believe that the garden-variety common Muslim (George Bush’s “moms and pops like the rest of us”) don’t “know” the anti-semitism that saturates their Islam; and by implcation that this is only a problem of the “imams” — a TMOE (Tiny Minority of Extremists).

Nope. This is 2013. All the victims of Islam will not allow me to let this bullshit slide. Maybe in 2003 I would have let my guard down on this; but no longer. And I don’t care if other JWers are so relaxed they don’t give a shit about this.

  22. says

Duke is the one who began by making a glibly sweeping claim — “Muslims in Indonesia in general don’t know what a synagogue is…”

The phrase “in general” would reasonably be more then 50%. Let’s see… that would be over 100 million people Duke is generalizing about (total population of Muslim in Indonesia: 205 million). And he chides me for the fallacy of the hasty conclusion. I’ve noticed a curious phenomenon: everyone who is myopic about the problem of Islam tends to indulge in projection (and, perforce, hypocrisy).

As I’ve argued before, both sides of this general issue of the problem of Islam run up against the problem of generalization. There are so many Muslims in the world, and they are spread out in such a broad and diverse diaspora (including, increasingly and metastatically, throughout the West) that it is virtually impossible to nail down apodictically a verdict, either good or bad, about them.

However, one must not then conclude that one can’t conclude, and throw up one’s hands and adopt the agnostic epoche of the Skeptics. There are many times and contexts in life when we are faced with a matter so broad and complex, we must generalize — if that matter involves exigent necessities (and what is more necessary and exigent than the security of one’s society from mass-murderous fanatics who hate all our cherished values and virtues?). In such a situation, we are faced with a dilemma: on which side should we err?

With this particular dilemma, those who counsel that we err on the side of giving Muslims the benefit ot the doubt (“most Muslims are moms and pops like the rest of us”, only a TMOE (Tiny Minority of Extremists) are the problem) seem to be motivated psychologically by an anxious concern to maintain an ethical standard — and their anxiety stems from a foreboding that if we were to begin slip-sliding down that slippery slope toward those peculiarly post-modern thought crimes of generalization, discrimination, and prejudice, we would jeopardize if not destroy our own ethical worth. And we know how tenuous is the self-perception of ethical worth among Guilty White Westerners who remain haunted by their shameful historical skeletons which threaten to rear their shameful heads at every turn, whether at Abu Ghraib or in a gated community in Sanford, Florida — so tenuous it hangs by a thread and must be reinforced constantly, and perpetually, with no historical statute of limitations, apparently: Modern White Western Man must atone in various ways for his shameful intrinsic “racism” for eternity. One way to atone is to vote for a disastrously wrong President just because he’s black. Another way is, when presented with the volcanic mountain of data about the metastasizing problem of Islam around the world (and increasingly in the West), to err on the side of giving Muslims the benefit of the doubt — in big and in little ways (an example of the latter casually slipped in, or mask-slipped, by “Duke”).

Or, we can rationally assess this alarmingly growing mountain of data about the problem of Islam and make reasonable inferences — if, as former essayist here at Jihad Watch, Hugh Fitzgerald, put it so cleverly, we “have the mental pencil to connect the dots”. Though I dare say the problem with the Dukes of the world (and there are millions of them throughout the West, many worse than him) is not that they lack the mental pencil to connect the dots: the problem is not a negative one of a deficiency. All the information is there; all the dots and data are there. It’s a positive problem — a problem of the presence in their hearts and minds of a paradigm based on a worldview that tends, more or less consciously, to act as a filter of any incoming data about Muslims, and thus to censor what they process in their minds, and then to re-route and program that incoming data that passes the politically correct firewall in their brains into a pre-fab template of axioms that always ensures that, no matter what the data says, no matter what it implies, no matter how much of it there is out there, the foredrawn conclusion must always be maintained: We must always err on the side of Muslims, on not against them.

  23. says

    Invariably, typos crop up:

“…the foredrawn conclusion must always be maintained: We must always err on the side of Muslims, on not against them.”

    Should be, of course:

“…the foredrawn conclusion must always be maintained: We must always err on the side of Muslims, and not against them.”

Indonesia has not been an islamic nation since 7th century, in fact Indonesia became a secular nation in August 1945. Indonesia was the world 3rd largest communist nation until 1965 when The USA aided Suharto and the Mohamedans take power.

Indonesia is a secular nation, yet islam is the dominant religion. Islam was first adopted by Indonesians in northern Sumatra in the 13th century, through the influence of traders, and became the country’s dominant religion by the 16th century. A large proportion of Indonesians”such as the Javanese abangan muslims, Balinese Hindus, and Dayak Christians”practice a less orthodox, syncretic form of their religion, which draws on local customs and beliefs.

Law of Indonesia is based on a civil law system, intermixed with customary law and the Roman Dutch law,not sharia. Before the Dutch colonization in the sixteenth century, indigenous kingdoms ruled the archipelago independently with their own custom laws, known as adat. Foreign influences from India, China and Arabia have not only affected the culture, but also weighed in the customary adat laws. Aceh in Sumatra, for instances, observes their own sharia law, while Toraja ethnic group in Sulawesi are still following their animistic customary law.

Dutch presence and subsequent occupation of Indonesia for 350 years has left a legacy of Dutch colonial law, largely in the Indonesia civil code. Following the independence in 1945, Indonesia began to form its own modern Indonesia law, not developing from scratch but with some modifications of the precepts of existing laws. As a result, these three components (adat, Dutch-Roman law and modern Indonesia law) still co-exist in the current Indonesia laws.

No most Indonesians do not know what a synagogue is. Ask an average Indonesian what a synagogue is the will look back at you clueless.

Not so. While there may have been a few incursions by Muslim traders as early as the 8th century, Islam did not really begin to spread in Indonesia until the 13th century. Even then, most of the population for centuries was Hindu, Buddhist, and animist.

Moreover, Indonesia was under European colonialism for centuries, which did a great deal to curb the destructiveness of Islam. Indonesia gained independence in 1945.

So, this synagogue was protected for much of its history.

Even now, there is a fairly large Infidel population in Indonesia, as well as some lingering civilizing influence in its colonial-derived legal code. But Indonesia, like so much of the Muslim world, it increasingly Islamizing, which is always bad news for Infidels and their “Jahillya”.

And, mostly, Indonesia has *so much* “Jahillya” that even pious Muslims would be hard-pressed to destroy it all at once. Give them time, though…

  27. says

“If there is any truth of what you said, then how did the synagogue stood there from 19th century till the recent time?”

Duke is wondering, rhetorically, how it could possibly be that Muslims in the past were so tolerant; and his rhetorical answer is that Muslims are so tolerant — why, that must be the only answer, right?

Or perhaps it was that Indonesia was colonized by the Dutch adn that the Dutch forced Muslims to be more tolerant than they normally would have been. That’s what Western colonialists did nearly everywhere where they colonized parts of the Muslim world, beginning in earnest in the 17th century — whether French Algeria and Lebanon, or English French and English Egypt, English India, or Italian LIbya and Morocco, Spanish Philippines, etc.

The “Arab Spring” (and its early precursor, the “Iranian Spring” of 1979) is a vivid example of the natural sociopolitical proclivities of any Muslim polity and what it reverts to (pun intended) when a beneficial foreign imposition (e.g., Western Colonialism) is taken away. In the case of our recent “Arab Spring” phenomenon, the Western Colonialism that has been violent deconstructed has been in its vestigial form of tin-pot “secularist” dictators who are not “pure” enough in their sharia to suit the Muslim masses and their demagogues.

    http://frontpagemag.com/2013/dgreenfield/next-to-last-synagogue-in-obamas-moderate-muslim-indonesia-torn-down/

Even the report by D Greenfield is very misleading, as it is basically a cut and paste job from the Jakarta Globe but misses out some very important details.

Sachiroel Alim, one of the heads of the Surabaya Legislative Council, told the Jakarta Globe on Saturday that the council summoned the Surabaya Tourism Agency at the end of May and gave them seven days to officially report the case to the police since the demolition was in direct violation of the Law on Cultural Heritage.

“There was an indication that the owner of the synagogue had sold the building,” Sachiroel said. “It’s not clear whether the buyer ” allegedly a real estate company ” destroyed the building, or if the original owner knocked it down themselves,”

Sachiroel said that he did not know if Muslim hard-liners had anything to with razing the synagogue.

Now any body who has been following this site and would care to be honest, should be aware that mohamedans hardliners such as FPI do not do things quietly, If they had anything to do with the demolishion of this synagogue, they would have come with a big mob in broad daylight

No this synagogue was in the heart of the business area, therefore quite valuable, so for it to be declared a heritage site, it would not be in the best interest for the buyer ” allegedly a real estate company,or if the original owner.

And even after 1945, the benefits of Western Colonialism survived, albeit imperfectly, under the dictatorships of Suharto and Sukarno. That is the rule of Islamic political science: there are only two choices with the diseased Demos of any Muslim people:

    1) the mayhem and misery of Islamic “purification” through incessant instability and attempts at sharia enforcement, including guerrilla wars, civil unrest, revolutions, palace coups, terrorism, and Taliban takeovers;

    or

    2) the ifon fist of tin-pot dictators who force the Muslim people to live under a mixture of “impure” Islamic rule + corrupt cooperation with the West.

There is no third choice for the Hell on Earth which Muslim people bring to the table of life through their diseased fanaticism.

For us Infidels who try to make the world safer in a world filled with hundreds of millions of diseased fanatics called Muslims, the Realislamik of Door #2 is decidedly better and safer than the far more dangerous choice of Door #1. Unfortunately, the de facto Islamogeopolitics the West semi-consciously enforced in the wake of the dissolution of Western Colonialism (roughly speaking, post-WW2) == which more or less controlled the Muslim world under a system roughly approximating Door #2 — has been falling apart in ever since the year 1 A.Q. (i.e., 2001 in Anno al-Qaeda — aka 011), and at an alarmingly precipitous rate since the disastrous confluence of an Obama Adminstration and an “Arab Spring”.

    您是是找 = Ma Féi Zhū

    Which means, of course…

Fat, male pig. Or fat, greedy pig.

So appropriate for a Mohammedist, I would say.

I would also say you are a liar, because I know so, and because Mohammedists would NEVER name their children after pigs.

Try again, dummy. I got your number, Muslim. My Chinese students are excellent at this IT and hacking stuff, and they’ll do almost anything for a grade.

    Hahahahahahaha!

  32. says

    So who is lying

Ma Féi Zhū does not translate as Fat, male pig. Or fat, greedy pig.As you claim

Why, Ma is one of the most common Chinese family names. As of 2006, it ranks as the 14th most common Chinese surname in Mainland China and the most common surname within the Chinese Muslim community, specifically the Hui people, Dongxiang people, and Salar people.

So Ma Féi Zhū translates as mohammed fat pig

    as we see below

Ma Anliang (馬安良) Qing Dynasty mohamedan General

Ma Bufang, mohamedan warlord in China during the Republic of China era, ruling the northwestern province of Qinghai

Ma Buqin, mohamedan warlord in China during the Republic of China era, brother of Ma Bufang

Ma Bukang, mohamedan warlord in China during the Republic of China era

Ma Zhanshan, mohamedan guerilla warrior against the Japanese during the Second Sino-Japanese War

Ma Chengxiang, mohamedan warlord in China during the Republic of China era, son of Ma Buqing

  33. says

Keep digging that hole Muslim. Just remember the first rule of hole-digging. Hahahaha!

[féi zhÅ«]. n.slaughter pig; hog; 网络hog; Pig; a fat pig. 汉英网络释义. n. 1. slaughter pig. 2. hog. 1. hog. 月份与星期的英文_百度文库… boar ç§猪hog 阉猪, 肥猪gilt …

So I guess we could say you are a Fat, gilded pig, who’s been slaughtered, which I find terribly amusing.

And by the way, your little ruse with “Ma” doesn’t work, because linguistically, and in an inverse sense, the surname, “White” in English does not necessarily mean the holder of that name is white in skin color.

So again, keep digging. But why don’t you just admit that you’re a Muslim and get it over with?

And if you claim not to be, repeat after me:

“Mohammed is not a Prophet. He is a big, fat pig that should have been slaughtered, if he existed, at all.”

    Bwahahahahahaha!

  34. says

Oh! I forgot to ask…so do you miss your buddy, “Rich”? He got tossed out of here like the refuse from a slaughtered pig, the other day.

Do you miss him? I kinda do, but only because he was so much fun to toy with, like you.

    Hahahahaha!

  35. says

In 1934 a small group of Hui members of the Yihewani left Hezhou on the Hqij, led by Ma Debao, from the heavily Muslim-populated Guanghe County’e Bai (White) village, along with Ma Yinu, Ma Zhenliu, and Ma Ling, the four “Ma’s.” (“Ma” is the most common surname among Hui Muslims in China, tracing its origins to the Ming dynasty when many Muslims were required to take on Chinese
surnames. “Ma” most closely resembled the first syllable of “Muhammad It is also the Chinese character for ‘horse” and since many Hui were engaged as caravaneers, it was a natural choice for a surname.)

Quite so”this is what I meant when I wrote, “Even now, there is…some lingering civilizing influence in its colonial-derived legal code…”.

But Indonesia, like most of Dar-al-Islam, it increasingly Islamizing”which bodes ill for all Infidels there, including the handful of Jews remaining and any remnants of their heritage there.

  38. says

Yes, basically, all the various parts of the Dar-al-Islam have been struggling in various ways ever since the West first impinged on them and began causing them either to a) actually dilute their Islamic “purity” or to b) exacerbate their own internally caused dissensions making it seem like, or offering them the excuse that, things were falling apart and what was needed is more Islamic “purity”.

I.e., for about 300 years or more, various parts of the Islamic world have been in a process of “Arab Spring” — just more protacted than what has happened in the last couple of years. Indeed, what has happened in the last couple of years is just a continuation, with more intense and serendipitous opportunities, of what they have been doing for 300-odd years in resisting this strange phenomenon that happened to Islam when “Rome” began to take over the world geopolitically.

…this strange phenomenon that happened to Islam when “Rome” began to take over the world geopolitically.

This process beginning about the 17th century (“Rome” of course being the West).

“whose rulers remained Hindu until they were forced to convert to Islam by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in 1770. ”

I didn’t say the various Western Colonialists were perfect. However, they were a gazillion times better than Muslims ever were, or could ever hope to be.

  41. says

While in some respects it’s an over-simplification, in other respects it does reflect the overarching truth of the matter — namely, that pre-PCMC Western Colonialism erred on the side of a paternalistic racism whereby they mistakenly underestimated the dangerous fanaticism of Muslims because they deemed them to be amusingly backward “curious Orientals”; while PCMC Western Wilsonianism (our current regime throughout the West) errs on the side of a paternalistic reverse-racism whereby they mistakenly whitewash and extol Muslims in the name of avoiding any semblance of what they obsessively perceive to be the thought crime of “racism”.

While the error of classic Western Colonialism too often gave undue favor to Muslims here and there (often at the expense of local non-Muslims) and while this contributed to setting up the 20th century for the problems it has had with Muslims, the error of the regime of our current era is truly disastrous, on a scale probably far worse than Neville Chamberlain’s naivete. The West will be lucky if in this century as the decades roll by getting worse and worse we finally manage to ameliorate the problem with only tens of millions of our people mass-murdered by Muslims in various WMD attacks planned and coordinated and implemented with the help of the kinds of Muslims PhilipJihadski doesn’t think are exigently deadly.
