A softspoken, schizophrenic suspected terrorist was charged Tuesday with attempting to establish a jihadi training camp in the United States.
Haroon Aswat, 40, mumbled “not guilty” in Manhattan Federal Court as Judge Katherine Forrest read the charges of providing support to terrorists.
The bleary-eyed British citizen with shaggy black hair had been extradited from the United Kingdom earlier in the day.
He is accused of being an accomplice of hook-handed hate cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri, who is awaiting sentencing after being convicted in May of conspiring to open a terrorist training camp in rural Bly, Oregon, in 1999.
Prosecutors said the camp was intended to serve as a military-style training ground for jihadists bound for Afghanistan.
In a letter faxed to Aswat urging him to travel to Bly, one of Hamza’s sympathizers said the camp “looks just like Afghanistan” and that they were “stock-piling weapons and ammunition” there, according to documents.
In 2002, FBI agents recovered a ledger from an Al Qaeda safehouse in Karachi, Pakistan, that included Aswat’s name, prosecutors said.
Aswat’s attorney, Peter Quijano, said his client had medications, including an anti-psychotic, that he needed to take immediately….
