Given the nature of the Islamic State, this condemnation must be seen as a death threat. In any case, it indicates why we don’t see more sincere Islamic reformers: their lives are threatened by hardliners. And the cartoon of the Islamic State slashing the “Coexist” symbol is a candent illustration of the futility and fatuousness of the adamantine commitment of Pope Francis and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to “dialogue” with Muslim leaders. Whatever soothing words are poured out in handsomely printed, earnest documents, the slashers will keep coming, and the “dialogue” doesn’t come even close to stopping them.

Supporters of the Islamic State (IS) on Twitter condemned American Muslims’ participation in interfaith activities with Pope Francis amid his U.S. visit.
On September 25, 2015, a user by an Arabic-language username translating to “Come Come,” called such Muslims “coconuts,” a term used by jihadists to insult moderate Muslims:
I wonder how many coconuts attended today’s inter-religious prayer service led by Pope in NYC. They all need to take shahadah again.
On the same day, the Twitter account of “١ Muslimah” made several messages condemning the Pope, one of which stating, “Coconuts greet the Pope & apologize for 9/11 & condemns Muslims. Just another day for them.”…
