“On Wednesday, the Court of Appeal ordered his release, pending a new hearing in his case. The court questioned the speed with which he had been tried and convicted, noting that it took five hours from the time of his arrest to a conviction.”
It was only just to free Tommy Robinson, and lessens the impression that Britain is becoming a police state in which it is illegal to criticize Islam and mass Muslim migration in Britain today. Britain is still on that road, but apparently in this case the May government was feeling too much pressure to keep Tommy in prison.
Meanwhile, note the contempt and the vicious bias of this New York Times piece. This is Leftist propaganda disguised as a news story. Tommy is “anti-Muslim,” the universal label applied to those who oppose jihad terror and Sharia oppression of women, gays, etc. Was opposing the Nazis “anti-German”?
Tommy is also a “far-right activist.” Anyone, no matter how socially liberal and how committed to the principles of secular, republican rule, is “far-right” for opposing jihad terror and Sharia oppression. There is no substance to the term other than to try to equate such opposition with Nazism.
The Times semaphores to its dwindling Leftist readership, if the point weren’t clear enough already, that Tommy is not to have their support, for he is supported by “former Trump aide Stephen K. Bannon but reviled by others who call him a violent purveyor of hate.” Who calls him a “violent purveyor of hate”? Hope Not Hate, a Leftist smear group akin to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Then there is the open libel that Robinson’s “divisive, anti-Muslim rhetoric has resulted in acts of violence,” he added, the most extreme of which occurred when a man, inspired by Mr. Robinson, rammed a van into a congregation of Muslims leaving a mosque in north London in January.”
In reality, there was no “inspiration” from Robinson, who never called for any attacks on mosques. The Times makes this connection based on a mass email that the perpetrator received, which itself did not call for or justify any violence. The Times rushes to connect Robinson to this incident, while it can never quite see the connection between Muslims screaming “Allahu akbar” while killing people and the violent passages of the Qur’an.
“Tommy Robinson, Anti-Muslim Activist, Is Freed on Bail in U.K.,” by Palko Karasz, New York Times, August 1, 2018:
LONDON — Tommy Robinson, the jailed British far-right activist backed by the former Trump aide Stephen K. Bannon but reviled by others who call him a violent purveyor of hate, was ordered to be freed on bail Wednesday, after challenging his conviction for contempt of court.
Mr. Robinson was arrested in May after he live-streamed a video from outside a criminal trial in Leeds, England, which had a news media blackout, revealing the defendants’ identities. He was sentenced to 13 months in prison for contempt of court, provoking an international outcry in far-right circles.
On Wednesday, the Court of Appeal ordered his release, pending a new hearing in his case. The court questioned the speed with which he had been tried and convicted, noting that it took five hours from the time of his arrest to a conviction.
Who is Tommy Robinson?
Anti-Muslim activistMr. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon, is the founder of the English Defense League, an anti-Islam and anti-immigration movement, known for violent street protests.
Born and raised in Luton, north of London, he worked at the town’s international airport but lost that job for assaulting an off-duty police officer. He was also arrested after being accused of inciting soccer violence, as a supporter of the Luton soccer club.
“Wherever he has gone in his career he organized demonstrations that have resulted in extreme violence,” said Joe Mulhall, a senior researcher at Hope Not Hate, a London-based organization that researches hate groups.
“His divisive, anti-Muslim rhetoric has resulted in acts of violence,” he added, the most extreme of which occurred when a man, inspired by Mr. Robinson, rammed a van into a congregation of Muslims leaving a mosque in north London in January….

How ‘complicated’ is that?
If it is legal, but unpopular, it is STILL LEGAL to criticize Islam.

++++++1 Excellent points and as Mr. Spencer noted, no one was ever criticized for being anti-Nazi nor were they referred to as anti-German. The Times like to point to one incident as a major war on civility while completely ignoring the daily assaults on Christians, gays and especially Jews and in fact they assault anyone and everyone not Islamic enough by these sub-human savages. I am very happy that Tommy Robinson can breath a bit more freely now and maybe in an open trial, he can shine light on the fact that May and the jihadist mayor of Londonstan are trying to shut down free speech.

The authorities got Tommy on a technicality. He was in breach of a Court Order not to report on rape gang trials. Equally unfortunate in this lock-up fiasco is that it has not only served to distract attention from the brutes that coerced and abused all these young girls but also from the doddering idiots in power that sought to sleep through it all while blindfolding and silencing the public. You almost wonder if that’s *why* they really arrested Tommy.
Michael Copeland says
Ezra Levant reports:
The court found that:
* Tommy should not have been put on trial that same day
* Tommy’s lawyer did not have proper time to prepare his case
* the judge in Leeds never clearly presented what Tommy had allegedly done wrong
* the judge did not watch the entire video of Tommy, that supposedly was proof of his contempt
* the judge did not follow the criminal procedure rules
* the sentence was disproportionate; and
* Tommy’s treatment in prison was inappropriate

A youtube commentator pointed out that there is a procedural rule: a judge who witnesses an arrest must not preside in the case resulting from it. Maybe the judge in Leeds asked the police to arrest Tommy: it is not known whether he witnessed the arrest from that upstairs window. Leeds police would not have known the terms of the Canterbury Court’s restrictions. Tommy was not breaking any public law.

Yes. NY Times spin on this is predictably biased. Unbelievable that they would smear Tommy with alleged responsibility for the Finsbury Park mosque van attack (which was undeniably despicable). I understand that the evidence of this is that driver who drove into the crowd was apparently an avid reader of Tommy’s social media posts (gasp!). To the NY Times that means Tommy must have “inspired” this attack. As far as I know, the van driver never claimed to be “inspired” by Tommy Robinson. Contrast with the way the NY Times avoids pointing out that virtually all Muslim terrorists don’t just read, but study, the Koran and many of them assert that they are in fact inspired by it (or more accurately directed by it) to commit countless acts of terror. The bias, hypocrisy and phony double standard is just mind-boggling.

It is impossible not to fear for the future of British law, freedom and democracy, after reading the yellow journalism so prevalent in the Times account of the arrest and detention of Tommy Robinson. No holds were barred in the slime covered and intentional blackening of Tommy’s life and character, who is in fact, an English patriot in a country which has scant few of his kind. Every word of the Times details on who, what, where, why and how, concerning Tommy’s activities and personal history, evoked despair. Looking back many years, I recall Mark Stein’s book, America Alone, in which he correctly detailed the UK’s capitulation to Islamists and to raw barbarism, while the steady drumbeat of persecution against British patriots – and those of the Christian faith – reverberated across this once free, democratic land. British people who value their freedoms and who wish to live in a country that enforces what is LEGAL and democratic, would be wise to either pack their bags and leave, or ……?

‘“Wherever [Tommy Robinson] has gone in his career he organized demonstrations that have resulted in extreme violence,” said Joe Mulhall, a senior researcher at Hope Not Hate, a London-based organization that researches hate groups.”
Whatever violence Tommy has been involved in doesn’t hold a candle to the teachings and actions of Mohammed, the so-called prophet of Islam and the supposed perfect example of a man that all Muslims should emulate.
‘“His divisive, anti-Muslim rhetoric has resulted in acts of violence,” he added, the most extreme of which occurred when a man, inspired by Mr. Robinson, rammed a van into a congregation of Muslims leaving a mosque in north London in January….”
The man who rammed his van into Muslims leaving a mosque did it after watching and becoming angered by a BBC program on the large-scale UK Muslim rape gangs that have raped thousands of non-Muslim English school girls throughout England, and pimped these same girls out as sex slaves under threat of their being torture and murdered, the van man even said so himself.

I’m sure what you say is correct, Janette. If Tommy Robinson’s case hadn’t been given plenty of public support and if he hadn’t got good quality legal support, he’d probably still be in gaol and conveniently ignored by the government. I suspect it would be impossible for the average, anonymous person to get such justice. To me, this case shows that governments are often reluctant to do the right thing, but, if enough people get motivated to get out there and demonstrate and pressure the government, then governments can be dragged kicking and screaming to do the right thing. I’m sure the UK government wanted to leave Robinson in gaol and ignore him and hope interest in him would fade away.

Tommy Robinson’s release is excellent news.
However Tommy Robinson made a grave mistake by associating with a violent Hindu religious extremist called Tapan Ghosh, the founder of Hindu Samhati, an extremist West Bengal group that shares many traits with the Islamists that Robinson combats. The Hindustan Times reported “Tapan Ghosh, founder of Hindu Samhati, called for building a ‘Hindu Defence Force’ to fight ‘Islamic aggression’.
http://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/bengal-based-hindutva-leader-s-speech-in-british-parliament-draws-ire/story-r2WAqo3Fhlaltkaj0MolCM.html
This is not a good idea. We gain nothing by alienating Muslims as a whole. At best his gesture can be regarded as a publicity stunt.
Western counterjihadists should seek out South Asian partners more suitable than Tapan Ghosh, namely partners who share our democratic, peaceful and rational values and reject sectarianism. Those partners could even include secular Muslims, who are often needlessly provoked by the Hindu nationalists who presently govern India.
Indian Muslims, being a minority, are strongly motivated to defend secularism, and many Muslim political organizations still adhere to the tradition of political unity with Hindus that characterized much of India’s struggle for independence.
After resigning from the EDL, Tommy Robinson pledged to fight Islamic totalitarian by democratic means. Tapan Ghosh’s religious ideology does not fit the bill.
Cooperating with Mr. Ghosh, as Tommy Robinson does, entails approving the current process in India of growing reactionary Hindutva oppression of numerous minorities, both religious and social, and Christians are a favorite target. In India St. Valentine’s Day is banned by Hindu extremists, and the ban is strictly enforced. Hindutva extremists resemble jihadists in their readiness to employ violence and their contempt for democratic values and procedures.
The only virtue that Hindu zealots offer compared to Mohammedan zealots is that Hinduism by its nature is tightly linked to the Indian subcontinent and poses no expansionist threat. As a matter of fact there is no Hindutva movement in Britain, despite the many Hindus who live there.
gravenimage says
As a rule, Muslims in India are not defending secularlism–they most defend the barbarism of Islam.

I did not say all of them are secular, but there is substantial Muslim secular and/or patriotic minority, which are our natural allies, together with other groups.
KJW says
I’ll be sure to point every time an imam or some Muslim goes off on non-Muslims, the ideology of secularism or any disparaging remarks Muslims make, “Anti-Non Muslim!” Or anti-kuffar. The Qur’an is VERY anti-Non Muslim. Their prayers are anti-Non Muslim.
For the Leftists, Islam apologists and New York Times: They are anti human rights, anti individual rights, anti free speech, anti children’s rights, anti women’s rights, anti intellectualism, and I could go on. They are pro-propaganda, cowards, hypocrites, sell-outs, pro-censorship, mendacious, and I could go on.
If they want to play word games then I’ll stick with my use of Islamofascism. Anti-Muslim is another Muslim Brotherhood favorite so as to pit the Muslims against the Non-Muslims. Then like their fanatical, violent Egyptian fans, they incite them to be mean.
The New York Times has always been politically influenced. It’s often what they don’t talk about that shows their bias. They’re slightly better than WAPO, however. Do either talk about the dramatic crime wave in England or the rapes? Do they ever talk about the negative consequences of mass Muslim immigration? Do they ever give ex-Muslims a voice?
