They're scratching their heads in Houston over this one: "A Saudi Arabian national who slashed a Jewish friend's throat after apparently undergoing a religious reawakening has pleaded guilty to murder rather than face trial." This from the Houston Chronicle, with thanks to Mrs. Obelix and Nicolei.
Mohammed Ali Alayed, 23, faces up to 60 years in prison for the Aug. 6 attack in which Ariel Sellouk was almost decapitated with a knife.
He got 60 years because of a deal made involving his guilty plea. The case was not tried as a hate crime; another story about the case explains that
although there was no direct evidence the killing was a hate crime, attorneys said jurors might have been particularly unsympathetic to Alayed because the slaying raised the specter of Islamic extremism and stereotypes surrounding terrorists. "Now is not a good time to be trying a case with these facts," said Alayed's attorney, George Parnham. "I believe a jury well could have given him a life sentence."
That has been known to happen in murder cases. Meanwhile, the prosecution agreed:
Prosecutor Stephen St. Martin said there was no clear motive in the killing, which Alayed's roommate witnessed. There was no strategic advantage to prosecuting the slaying as a hate crime, because that and murder by itself carry a maximum sentence of life in prison, St. Martin said.
The connection to his "religious reawakening" apparently was made by the Chronicle, not by authorities in Houston. Police can't find a motive — they're just sure that the murder didn't have anything to do with religion:
Although Alayed went to a local mosque after the slaying and no clear motive was established, Houston police said they could not find any evidence that Sellouk, also 23, was killed because of his race or religion.
Nevertheless, these are the facts of the case:
Alayed, of the 2500 block of Winrock, was arrested Aug. 14 in a friend's empty Galleria-area apartment.
According to the victim's father, Michel Sellouk, the victim
became friends with Alayed a few years ago. He said Alayed underwent 'a religious experience' about two years ago, became a devout Muslim and broke off contact with Ariel. On the day of the slaying, Sellouk said, Alayed called his son and suggested they get together. The two had drinks at a bar before going to Alayed's apartment about midnight. Alayed's roommate told police the two were not arguing before Sellouk was killed.
No clear motive? Not a hate crime? This is a craven example of the astounding state of denial that dominates the public discourse today about radical Islam. Did prosecutors investigate the possibility that in the course of his religious reawakening Alayed may have come across the hadith collection Mishkat Al-Messabih? It states:
When judgment day arrives, Allah will give every Muslim, a Jew or Christian to kill so that the Muslim will not enter into hell fire" (vol. 2, no. 5552).
Did they take note of the fact that a recent Muslim murderer of a Jew in France cried after the deed, "I have killed my Jew. I will go to heaven"?
I am quite sure that they did not. I am quite sure that they thought that ignoring the possibility that Alayed's murder was an exercise of jihadist hatred would be better in the long run. Better not to stir up trouble. But they are only buying for us more trouble down the road.

The prosecutors have never heard of Daniel Pearl, Islam is a religion of peace, and ritualistic beheadings of Jews just don't happen in America!
Oh, and the Arab who shot all those people in the El Al counter in the L.A. airport a couple of years ago? That wasn't a hate crime either. It was just coincidence that Jews were killed.
Yes, the ostrich approach to life works well...
Posted by: zorkmidden at January 13, 2004 12:04 PMamerican society is ripe for jihad.
this is why it is happening NOW.
america is turning against israel and the abrahamic
covenant cursing aspect in reference to jewish/gentile relations is kicking in.
genesis 12.3: I will bless those who bless thee,
and curse those who curse thee.
*sigh*
Ostrich indeed.
This is truly terrifying. Such a cold and premeditated act (had drink with a man he would soon kill) as this gives me the shudders.
If this isn't a hate crime, what is?
Posted by: jagaleigh at January 13, 2004 1:29 PMbut caling it a hate crime would offend our friends the saudis. Lets give more money to out of control mideast study (jihad) programs instead.

This man needs to be contacted and have the clear facts pointed out to him.
The reporter, Andrew Tilghman, seems to get it and sending a compliment his way would not be out of line.
This is, as a commentator on the Portland 7 case said, a "teachable moment"
(And by the way, I am appalled.)
Posted by: rosh at January 13, 2004 3:37 PMI remember something about throat-slitting being the sharia-compliant way to kill Jews. But I read so many things and google isn't helping me out here. I can't remember where I read it.
Posted by: rosh at January 13, 2004 3:57 PMI am nauseous. I will not let a muslim stand behind me anymore.
Posted by: joaquin at January 13, 2004 4:19 PMDon't forget the DC Sniper paradigm:
First, blame it on white conservative types, then when caught;
Ignore the radical Islam of John Muhammed, instead blame his violence on failed marriage, military service
When his illegal alien sidekick makes and draws all sorts of pro Islamic slogans and pics, use that as evidence he is insane, but blame his crimes on the "Matrix"
Finally, make a hero out of a nasty incompetent buffoon who did absolutely nothing right investigating or hunting down the snipers, a la Chief Moose. Media paradigm #2: Always balance bad blacks out with good ones!
What about the Anthrax Attacks, right after 9/11 and all the lefties had to blame it on, once again, white militia types. Can't be Muslims, that's profiling. islam is a religion of peace and if you disagree, they'll kill you!
I noted that the newspaper account says the victim was nearly decapitated. Here are a couple pertinent verses from the Quran:
================
... when you meet the unbelievers, strike off their heads; then when you have made wide Slaughter among them, carefully tie up the remaining captives (47:4)
... I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them. (8:12)
================
Other verses in the Quran forbid a Muslim from becoming friends with a non-believer (5:51, 5:57, 4:139, 60:13). Perhaps with his renewed committment to Islam, he felt that by beheading his former friend he would rectify his previous "error" of friendship.
I'd also like to note that in battling Medina in 627 AD, Mohammed's forces captured between 600 and 900 Jewish men. He had these men bound, and he had a large trench dug (he helped dig it himself). And then in batches the bound prisoners were brought out, and their heards were cut off, and heads and torsos were thrown in the trench. Historical records indicate that Mohammed personally beheaded at least two of these Jewish prisoners himself.
Posted by: DebP at January 13, 2004 9:46 PMDaniel Pearl, the young french disk jockey and now this !
How many more have to die before the apologists call these murders Islamic ritual killings and become politically correct.
I am appalled and feel we cannot let this go. A young boy in American was just killed, and his story must be told to everyone we know. A movie should be made, a book written about his individual life showing what extremist Muslims do in America. People need to see the individual brutality of one extremist....possibly your neighbor, deli man, home construction worker, etc. Jenin, the movie, made a big splash and it was false. This is true and going unnoticed.
Posted by: Marilyn at January 14, 2004 7:03 AMHate crime laws are a farce. I strongly believe that they are a sop to African-American and gay demographics. Where else are they ever applied? And, what's their point? When an animal is sentenced to death or life without parole, what's the deterrent value in also charging them with a hate crime?
Jewish people and facilities are attacked and vandalized with alarming frequency. Many of the attacks happen on university campuses. That the attackers are usually either "Aryan" bubbas with bad teeth or Islamic fanatics is a clear case of moral equivalency that our committment to "diversity" can't get its collective head around.
If we persist in an "enlightened" perspective that all cultures have value and all points of view are worth consideration, then the jihadists will eat us for lunch. If they don't agree with us, then we propose concessions, accomodation and more dialogue. If we don't agree with them, then they want us dead.
Posted by: Peyton at January 14, 2004 7:25 AMOnce again:
There is no such thing as radical Islam, as opposed to say, peaceful Islam. Islam was born out of a violent, parasitic society and represents that view of the world. A 'radical' Muslim is merely one who acts on what is already there. What is so difficult to see?
A moderate, peaceful Islam would have to be something other than Islam as it now exists because the main, basic tenets would have to be excised.
I trust no Muslim, especially when lying about Islam is allowed in the dar al Harb.
Posted by: Budd at January 14, 2004 11:38 AMI agree with Marilyn's proposal that a book or movie be made. In fact, many reality-based books and movies should be made.
In the rational mind, where facts can be correctly identified and evaluated, then reason-derived emotions will be the result. Injustice will evoke anger, tragedy will evoke sadness, innovation will evoke admiration, productivity will evoke pride, etc.
A well done book or movie can provide the logically identified facts that evoke emotion. Emotion is a sort of intellectual "glue"--that's a simple neuroendocrinological fact of life. That's why we can remember a lot more about Queen Elizabeth I from a good movie than we can from Coach's lecture about her in 10th grade history class.
Posted by: cubed at January 14, 2004 3:07 PMRobert, I recently attend the Texas Da'wa conference held in Houston, Texas. Very Wahhabi(salafee). Talking to some of the participants, some seem to be in trances and will do anything that they perceive to be in God (Allah) will. Currently, I'm reading your book "Onward Muslim Soldiers", and I'll be using some of the verses in the discussion group that we have in the Sunni Mosque. How can I get a copy on the hadith collection Mishkat Al-Messabih? I'm very proud that you are exposing these bigots. I would encourage readers to report "unusal" activity to the JTTF (Joint Terrorism Task Force) if appropiate, of course. El Colombiano
Posted by: El Colombiano at January 14, 2004 10:51 PMPeace is simply a facade that some Muslims hide behind as they carry out their maniacal agendas. Not all Muslims are terrible people. Most just want to live in peace. While the rest of them are barbaric cut throats, with no conscience, morals, or scruples, they hate the Jewish, they hate Americans, they hate everyone that isn't a brainwashed, odious killer.
The problem is that many of them have infested our nation, attempting to play the victims of discrimination and bias, while they arrogantly try to force the issue of their religious practices down everyone's throats, believing that their religion is above our law.
This has to stop. Ours is a Government of the people, and for the people. Since we have several people praying for our votes this year, perhaps the people need to voice the concerns they have about the threat to our beloved soil that some of the Islamic extremists pose. I believe this is still our country, and we cannot let the liberals keep catering to them.
May God Bless Us All.

Unfortunatelly there are not.
Out of stupidity, politically corectness,or out of an inexplicable self-destroying death wish, the great people of this country of ours and the people of the whole civilized world,is being manipulated towards self anyhilation.
If we don`t wake up and if we don`t wake up soon,it will mean our extinction .
As for the other people who posted messages about making a movie or a book, chances of such a thing to happen in the current political climate, are Zero.
From the Arab News - Jan. 15
"Al-Ayed's defense attorney told journalists he did not know the motive for the killing, but said religious differences were likely to have been a factor. 'I can't help but belive this was an element, but how strong an element is totally up to speculation.'"
Did everyone miss the other point - that a Muslim was out drinking?

An English translation of Mishkat Al-Masabih has been published in Lahore, and is obtainable in the U.S. I have a copy, but got it long ago and don't remember where, except that it was stateside. It somewhat softens the passage in question, however, for which you will need to consult the Arabic.

Praise God,we seek His help and assisstance in all that we do.
Sadly, whether you choose to beleive it or not, you have all been mislead. I was no different than you, living in ignorance thinking that i had it all locked down. Islam is indeed the truth. And you quote the Quran out of context and even still you do not make a point. It says fight the disbeleivers...your reference, first of all, refers to a specific event/battle. Secondly, as we all know their has always been a battle between good and evil, so then what is your point? Should you not fight those who reject the truth and attempt to destroy it...only to then truly be defeated by God for not defending the truth because you were a coward. Your argument is not logical. Fear God, and to Him we ALL return.
I have warned you as others have warned me, your deeds have been made pleasing to your eyes but the reality is you have rejected The Truth from your Creator, so your good works are "as ashes scattered by the wind on a stormy day..."
I agree with one thing, if muslims want to live in the USA or anywhere else for that matter, they must abide by the law of the land, if they dont want to they should leave peacefully just as they came - of course with the exception of being forced to do something against Islam.
Islam is about one thing, worshiping ONE GOD - nothing else.
Reminds me of Revelations 20:4.
Posted by: Salvatore Gonzales at February 14, 2004 11:36 AMMohammed Alayed did premeditate and calculate his plan of murder. I believe it did have to do partially with his Islamic beliefs but, I also believe he was so jealous of Ariel. The way in which Ariel was murdered really sums it up. I guess the plea bargain will have to do for now. In reality, he will only serve 30 years and I hope his time in prison is a living hell - just as the one he put the Sellouk family and friends through.
Posted by: Angela Boylan at February 18, 2004 5:05 AMIbraheem states "Islam is indeed the truth. And you quote the Quran out of context and even still you do not make a point. And then goes on to say that Islam is about one thing and one thing only: worshipping one God.
To Ibraheem, I say BULLSHIT.
Firstly, Islam has always been a relgion of conquest. It's basic tenets are to convert or kill. It's central goal is to make the entire world Islam either through conversion or through the extermination of those who will not convert.
You will tell me I am misinterpreting the Koran. I say again to you, bullshit, and you KNOW it is so.
The Middle Ages were a time when religion arrogantly controlled every life, from king making to the things you had to believe about the religion itself, or be tortured and killed. It was a time when vast conquests were undertaken by proponents of a religion to install their religion as supreme. Christian and Islamic believers both engaged in conquest, terror, torture, and killing in the name of religion. There IS one religion missing from mention during this horrible time of fundamentalist dogmatic terror though....have you seen it? Judaism. Never have they attempted to spread their religion beyond their borders by conquest, force, or terror.
The middle ages are over, thankfully. However, Islam has NOT made it out of the middle ages. They are still rooted in middle age belief and in middle age religious conquest.
What evidence do we have for the truth of my statements and the statements of other posters here?
Name me ONE other religion that today tells children if they blow themselves up and kill innocent "non-believers" they will go to paradise (heaven). Name me one religion that has so many doing just that. Name me one religion other than Islam that engages in terror and cheers when the Trade Towers fell. Name me ONE other religion across the face of this planet that supports the killing of innocent people to further it's agenda everywhere it is found. Name me one religion other than Islam that no matter what country it is found in, no matter the host nation, demands supreme loyalty and encourages it's followers to work against it's host country. Name me ONE OTHER religion that has the empirical evidence of its intolerance, hatred and moral bankruptcy evidenced by its violence wherever it is found?
Islam is the ONLY religion doing these things. You cannot name ONE SINGLE Christian priest or minister, not ONE SINGLE Jewish rabbi, not ONE SINGLE Shinto, hindu, etc holy man calling for the deaths of "non-believers" or the extermination of a nation.
There are many, many of YOUR holy men calling for the deaths of non-believers, Jews, Americans, and applauding those who heed them and do just that.
Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance?
BULLSHIT.
