Abu Musab al-Zarqawi
Al-Qaeda still active in Iraq, although it has suffered a loss of support. But some within Iraq are actively encouraging it. This from the New York Times, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm:
American officials here have obtained a detailed proposal that they conclude was written by an operative in Iraq to senior leaders of Al Qaeda, asking for help to wage a "sectarian war" in Iraq in the next months. The Americans say they believe that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian who has long been under scrutiny by the United States for suspected ties to Al Qaeda, wrote the undated 17-page document. Mr. Zarqawi is believed to be operating here in Iraq. . . .
The author offers his services and those of his followers to the recipients of the letter, who American officials contend are Al Qaeda's leaders.
"You noble brothers, leaders of the jihad, we do not consider ourselves people who compete against you, nor would we ever aim to achieve glory for ourselves like you did," the writer says. "So if you agree with it, and are convinced of the idea of killing the perverse sects, we stand ready as an army for you to work under your guidance and yield to your command." . . .
"We were involved in all the martyrdom operations — in terms of overseeing, preparing and planning — that took place in this country," the writer of the document says. "Praise be to Allah, I have completed 25 of these operations, some of them against the Shia and their leaders, the Americans and their military, and the police, the military and the coalition forces."
But the writer details the difficulties that he and his comrades have been experiencing, both in combating American forces and in enlisting supporters. The Americans are an easy target, according to the author, who nonetheless claims to be impressed by the Americans' resolve. After significant losses, he writes, "America, however, has no intention of leaving, no matter how many wounded nor how bloody it becomes."
The Iraqis themselves, the writer says, have not been receptive to taking holy warriors into their homes.
"Many Iraqis would honor you as a guest and give you refuge, for you are a Muslim brother," according to the document. "However, they will not allow you to make their home a base for operations or a safe house."
The writer contends that the American efforts to set up Iraqi security services have succeeded in depriving the insurgents of allies, particularly in a country where kinship networks are extensive.
"The problem is you end up having an army and police connected by lineage, blood and appearance," the document says. "When the Americans withdraw, and they have already started doing that, they get replaced by these agents who are intimately linked to the people of this region."
With some exasperation, the author writes: "We can pack up and leave and look for another land, just like what has happened in so many lands of jihad. Our enemy is growing stronger day after day, and its intelligence information increases.
"By God, this is suffocation!" the writer says.
But there is still time to mount a war against the Shiites, thereby to set off a wider war, he writes, if attacks are well under way before the turnover of sovereignty in June. After that, the writer suggests, any attacks on Shiites will be viewed as Iraqi-on-Iraqi violence that will find little support among the people.
"We have to get to the zero hour in order to openly begin controlling the land by night, and after that by day, God willing," the writer says. "The zero hour needs to be at least four months before the new government gets in place."
That is the timetable, the author concludes, because, after that, "How can we kill their cousins and sons?"
"The Americans will continue to control from their bases, but the sons of this land will be the authority," the letter states. "This is the democracy. We will have no pretexts."

So much for Muslim brotherhood, eh? Apparently it's ok for Sunnis to kill a few thousand Shias, all in the name of jihad against Americans.
Posted by: zorkmidden at February 9, 2004 9:54 AMAll Muslims must die for this thing to end.
Posted by: Scott at February 9, 2004 10:48 AMscott,
i take it your in favor of a "final solution" fix?
goebbels would be proud....

Two points:
1. "Kill or convert" is what the extremists have in mind for us.
2. If martyrdom is truly a Muslim's highest goal, Scott is proposing to give him what he seeks.

Posted by: Jay Stevens at February 9, 2004 1:07 PMWe lose over 500 soldiers in Iraq freeing them from a maniacal tyrant, and some of the Iraqis are in favor of Al Qaida's presence there?
Nice gratitude. Illiterate, ignorant Arab hillbillies. Another kick in the teeth from ungrateful people whose asses it appears, weren't worth saving.
Next thing you know, the ones we liberated will be taking up arms against us. They must like being miserable.
So be it. I suppose we'll still rebuild Iraq so it looks better than it did before we went in. What a shame. They want to go to Allah, I agree, let's help them along. The maniac did need to be removed for our own security. We plucked him from his rat hole, and we have him.
Let these ingrates fend for themselves now....so we can concentrate on bin laden...

A civil war between different religious factions would not be that bad after all, actually it would be quite wellcome.
It would keep them occupied for a while and it would also provide a lot of them with 72 virgins ,each.
You must spend time in the Middle East before you realize how deep the antipathy between the Sunnis and Shiites is.
One of my Saudi counterparts was talking about the Shiites:
"Oh, you shouldn't go there. There's lots of Shiites there. They are very bad people."
"Oh, I can't stop and eat there. They have a Shiite cook. He may do something bad to the food."
A biggie:
"Shiites are not real Muslims. They only pray once a day."
From that, it's only a small step to an all seasons, no bag limit on them.

Posted by: Jay Stevens at February 10, 2004 7:34 AM I have never seen a religion that hates like islam.
I know it is important what we are doing over in Iraq but sometimes I think that we (US) should bring all of our soldiers home close our borders and let the world take care of itself. Let them all kill each other. The world has no gratitude for us what so ever. I think they are scared and jealous of what the US has made for itself.
Muslims rarely care about sunni and shiites. We are very close and I have friends of both. My mother is shiite and my dad is sunni. Shiites and sunnis also believe in mostly the same things and pray five times a day. So before everyone speaks about Islam please know what the hell you are talking about. If all muslims should die for this to end that will never happen. We are 1.2 billion strong and if we are attacked to be eliminated we fight to the death. We love living here but if someone wants to convert or eliminate us we will fight back. If islam hate so much then why in Mecca are there all the races of the world together. Why are there whites, blacks, chinese, arabs, and all the rest of the races all together.

Posted by: Shady at April 15, 2004 11:11 AMMy dear Shady,
"Muslims rarely care about sunni and shiites."
The Shi'ites in Saudi Arabia, who have been subjected to persecution and massacre by the Sunni Wahhabi government, would be interested to learn this.
"If islam hate so much then why in Mecca are there all the races of the world together. Why are there whites, blacks, chinese, arabs, and all the rest of the races all together."
I applaud the racial diversity of Mecca. Unfortunately, racial diversity is not what is at issue. Why does Islamic law discriminate against Christians, Jews, and other non-Muslims? Why aren't non-Muslims allowed even to set foot in this diverse paradise of Mecca?
And why does it so often happen that posts like yours appear on old, long dormant threads? Are you interested in discussion, or do you just want to get the last word?
