The jihadis who killed Daniel Pearl seem to have been caught. From Reuters, with thanks to Nicolei:
Pakistani police have arrested two Islamic militants, including one suspected of involvement in the kidnap and killing of U.S. reporter Daniel Pearl, an officer says. The two men, Sajid Jabbar and Mohammad Athar, were arrested in an overnight raid in the port city of Karachi and belong to the outlawed Lashkar-e-Jhangvi group, Fayyaz Leghari, chief of the investigation branch of Karachi police, told Reuters.
Another senior officer, who did not want to be identified, said Jabbar was suspected of involvement in the kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Pearl in 2002 as well as several other militant attacks.
"He carries a reward of 500,000 rupees on his head," the officer said.
He said Jabbar was a close associate of Asif Ramzi, another suspect in the murder of Pearl, who blew himself up while making bombs in Karachi in December 2002.
Leghari said Jabbar and Athar were suspected of planning fresh attacks in Karachi. "We have seized a huge amount of weapons and explosives from their possession," he said.
Athar was the chief of the Sindh provincial wing of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and wanted for at least 10 separate terror attacks, including sending parcel bombs to senior police officers.
"Their arrest is a big success for the police and a blow to the terrorists," Leghari said.
Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, which has ties with the Taliban regime which formerly ruled Afghanistan and the al Qaeda network of Osama bin Laden, is also blamed for a May 2002 suicide bombing in Karachi in which 11 French technicians and three Pakistanis were killed.
Pearl was kidnapped and murdered in Karachi in early 2002 while researching a story on Islamic militants against a backdrop of the September 11 attacks on the United States.
A British-born militant, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, better known as Sheikh Omar, was sentenced to death in July 2002 for masterminding his murder. Omar has denied the charge and lodged an appeal.

He should suffer the same fate that Mr. Pearl did. Televise it, and let Pearl's widow remove his head with a sword. Face up, so he can see the sword making its way down.
Then he can go and get his 72 imaginary virgins in his imaginary paradise.
Posted by: DCWatson37 at February 18, 2004 10:16 AMI thought I had heard that Khalid Sheik Mohammed was the person who cut Danny Pearl's throat on the video.
Posted by: Nikki at February 18, 2004 11:20 AMhow are his imaginary virgins or imaginary paradise anymore imaginary then imaginary christian heaven or imaginary hell... none of us posting are dead yet and there is no solid proof that any of it exists...
Posted by: joseph at February 18, 2004 11:21 AMJoesph, tell them that on judgement day.....then, and only then, will you find out.......terrorist lover. There's really no proof, other than your ridiculous remarks, that you exist either.
Posted by: DCWatson37 at February 18, 2004 12:49 PMI do not love terrorists nor christain nuts...
the point is its very selfish of you to believe your religon is right and there's is wrong there is no proof to what happens after you die.
you believe in heaven they believe in heaven(with a bunch of virgins)
i believe that you just die and thats that...
but who knows i might be wrong....
Posted by: joseph at February 18, 2004 4:49 PMI wasn't going to post today... but Joseph has pulled my chain so here I go....
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Heb 11:1
Faith is one of the most covered topics in our Bible, as for God and Christian's belief in heaven. It is based on faith. We do not need to see it to believe it exists. We have faith that is exists and we live our lives accordingly.
To me it seems ridiculous that God would base your reward in Heaven on a carnal vise. That you will have 72 virgins to have sex with. You might as well say you are going to get a big fat sports car or millions of dollars.
Now as for Islam, you cannot call it a religion of faith. Conscription or the forced belief in anything is not faith. There is no faith when someone says believe or die. A belief system based on punishment is not faith. Call it whatever you want to call it but forcing someone to believe or practice a religion is anything but faith.
To me this is stark difference between the two religions. We believe and its free will that we do so. They believe out of fear and ignorance of their own religion. For it is a fact that most Muslims cant even read the Koran.
From your post I am not sure where you are spiritually. I can assume you are practicing your free will to not believe. Do the Christians in your life treat you badly or threaten you bodily harm for not believing? If you lived in a Muslim country do you believe you would get the same courtesy?
Posted by: Wild Hare at February 18, 2004 5:08 PMGreat points W H, it appears that Joesph's concern in life is pulling other people's chains, or he wouldn't come on this site...Christian nut? Not me....I just have faith in God and in Jesus....I don't even go to church except for Christmas and Easter.
I just know what I believe. For Joseph to say "who knows, I may be wrong", for one, I believe you are but again, you can explain yourself on judgement day.
It is not selfish to believe that Christianity is right and Islam is wrong. I believe what I believe, and the Muslims do too. Actually, they believe what they're told to believe because their intellect is sub-standard.
Like Wild Hare said, most of them can't read. Joseph, you and I are going to continue to do battle on this site until you either change your stance and stop calling everyone racists, or you leave. If you choose to stay, our debates will continue, you're an agitator, like in a washing machine. You make a lot of noise, but all you do is spin in circles.
Regarding religion, athiest or not...do you go onto any Muslim websites and badger them when they chatter on about us being the Great Satan?
You ought to have learned by now that we're not easy targets for your mamby pamby rhetoric.
Your move, Einstein

Luckily, Danny Pearl's widow is much smarter than that (as was Mr. Pearl himself during his lifetime). None of Pearl's friends or family made any rash statements in the form above. In fact, they went on to start a fellowship in his name, specifically for Pakistani journalists to work in a US newsroom for for six months.
The idea is that these journalists will learn about the reality of the United States and its people, rather than the widespread lies and bigotry in the Pakistani media about American society. It is envisaged that this experience will influence the views they will publicize when they return to their journalism jobs in Pakistan. This will eventually have an effect on perceptions of the US held by common Pakistani people.
Such an honorable scheme is very much in the spirit of Daniel Pearl's life. The realization that killing will only breed more hatred and contempt, whereas education and communication can address the underlying causes of hatred. I applaud Mariane Pearl for being so brave, even while everyone else is making mindless statements like "let's nuke those a-rabs". I only wish more people would follow the example set by Danny Pearl's family and friends.
Posted by: Mike at February 19, 2004 7:45 AMMindless? No Mike, Beirut, Somalia, the U.S.S. Cole, the 1972 Olympic Games, and of course September 11th, 2001 were the actions of mindless, unscrupulous, and heartless A-rabs.
They only understand power and violence, and so that's how they should repay their debts for the atrocities that they have, and continue to commit against anyone that practices outside the Islamic faith. They are the bigots...
Posted by: DCWatson37 at February 19, 2004 9:21 AM>"The realization that killing will only breed more hatred and contempt, whereas education and communication can address the underlying causes of hatred."
Ya Right.
The Koran, Qur'an, is what these people are told to adhere to, nothing else is acceptable. Educating these people on anything outside of that book is equivalent to a monkey trying to hump a football.
Posted by: DCWatson37 at February 19, 2004 9:27 AMDCWatson,
The fact that you and many others in the West now believe that only violence can fix the situation is, unfortunately, a sign that Osama bin Laden has won the war and got what he wanted. He wants for people like you to forget your morals and become bigots just like he is. That way, Muslims will have more of a reason to hate you, and the cycle continues. He wants the West to hate all Muslims so that he can rally Muslims to fight for his ridiculous cause.
It is sad, but it seems that bin Laden has been playing his cards perfectly, and has achieved exactly the response from Americans that he was hoping for. If only more of us would learn from Mariane Pearl.
Mike, I just don't think they want to change. They are set in their ways and their agenda. If it could all be discussed, that would be a gift from God. I just don't believe that they will work that way.....I hope someday I find out I'm wrong.
Posted by: DCWatson37 at February 19, 2004 12:48 PMDCWatson,
You have to realize that by giving up on discussion, and embracing bigotry, we are in fact supporting the cause of bin Laden. Prior to 9/11, bin Laden used to be on the very fringes of Muslim society with little suport from among the mainstream for his cause. However, after 9/11, a sufficient number of Westerners embraced the same bigotry, intolerance, and hatred towards Muslims, as bin Laden displays towards the West. The effect of this was that the average secular moderate (and Westophile) Muslim all of a sudden began to feel as though he was being attacked unjustly by the West. bin Laden then appeared to be defending that average Muslim from the Western bigots.
So you see, it is our bigotry and intolerance and hatred of all Muslims which has made bin Laden the hero in many Muslim societies, when just prior to 9/11 he was on the fringes, and thought of as a lunatic (which he is). We have fallen right in to his well-planned trap, for we have adopted the same bigotry that he has.
Now, I'm not suggesting that we try and have a meaningful discussion with bin Laden. I wish it were possible, but I am convinced as you are that he is not willing to listen to reason. However, we must be sure not to adopt the bigotry towards all Muslims as bin Laden would probably want us. We need to discriminate between those Muslims who adopt bigotry, and those Muslims who want peace. We must ensure that we keep the lines of communication and education with the peaceful Muslims. For only by winning the trust of these people will we undermine the support base of bin Laden.
Posted by: Mike at February 19, 2004 6:41 PMAnd in the meantime, with them already in our country, sneaking in through Mexico, Canada, and thru our own immigration, plotting attacks on us, there will be no talking with them, they are on a mission.
A mission to kill a many of us as possible. It's being preached in the Mosques on our own soil. There is no more time for talk. The planet's 1000 pound gorilla is on defense....because the Jihadis made it that way. Perhaps when bin laden is captured or dies of kidney failure, my opinion will change.....until then, my backyard is being watched.
Posted by: D.C. Watson at February 19, 2004 10:40 PMMike you are quite wrong in saying that Muslims were not with Bin Laden prior to 9-11. They danced in the street from Cairo to Kuala Lumpur when our people were burned alive in the WTC. This was at a time when the Western media was painting Islam in NOTHING but the rosiest of hues. Islam needs to be reformed; but that won't happen if we sit around and confirm the lies that Muslims tell to themselves and to others about their faith. They need to hear the "tough love" of exactly what the rest of the world thinks of their hate-filled, bigotted faith.
Yambomi: bite me. Your nuclear blackmail may work with Europeans but not with Americans. I'd rather die than see my nation turned into an Islamic hell-hole like Pakistan or Saudi Arabia. Besides if the West turned Islamic where would Muslims run to in order to escape the poverty and filth they've made out of their own countries?
Posted by: Susan at February 21, 2004 12:24 PM> They danced in the street from Cairo to Kuala Lumpur when our people were burned alive in the WTC.
Actually there were many more celebrations in Nicaragua, Chile, Paraguay, Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, and many other Latin American countries. It should give us an insight in to how well our foreign policy schemes have been working.
