The war on terror is expanding into Africa. From AP, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm:
The United States is scaling up its military presence in Africa as concern mounts over terrorist threats - both immediate and future - on the continent, the deputy head of American forces in Europe said Friday."The threat is not weakening, it is growing," Air Force Gen. Charles Wald said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press from Luanda, Angola. "We can't just sit back and let it grow."
The focus on Africa is part of major restructuring as U.S. forces in Europe reposition for the war against terror. . . .
European Command is not looking to station large concentrations of troops on the continent, Wald said. But it intends to make its presence felt through joint exercises, training initiatives and other exchanges.
U.S. forces have also negotiated access to a number of sites, including air strips in Angola and Gabon, that can be used for stopovers, refueling, or to position troops and equipment.
Wald said this will allow U.S. forces to respond with light, mobile troops - whether for peacekeeping, crisis response or a specific terrorist threat.
"We're actually going to get more capability with less force because of our ability to move around fast," he said.
Key to the effort is supporting the development of regional security groups, im-proving the capabilities of African police and soldiers, and building relationships with governments and militaries, Wald said. . . .
Wald's trip includes stops in regional military powers Nigeria and South Africa; oil-rich Angola, Gabon, Sao Tome and Principe; and Algeria and Niger, whose vast desert expanses are seen as a potential haven for terrorists.
At the same time, U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Kohler, the European Command's point man on planning for force reconfiguration, has been visiting the Saharan nations of Mauritania, Mali and Niger.

Its funny how Germany and France both screamed get out, get out... Now we are leaving and they are now saying.. no ummm... we were kidding. They hate us but love our money.
Posted by: Wild Hare at February 28, 2004 10:19 AMWhat we need more than anything else,is a strong leadership,a return to our christian faith that was the fundation of this great country, and recognition of moral values that are the fabric of a healthy society and nation.
I think we are losing the war with muslim terrorists because we are turning our face away from decency.
Such a war should be faught not only with our superior weapons, but on a ideological level, too.
And their ideology seems to grow stronger while ours seems to become weaker...
Ofcourse there are a lot of people converting to islam, for they cannot find the stability and moral values that they are looking for,in our siciety.
Our society has declared a demolition war on christianity,on decency,on family values and everything else that was once keeping this nation together.
Gay people are geting married, mayors and district attorneys as well as other officials are breaking the laws and nobody seems to be able to stop them,we are removing any signs of christianity from our schools and public places,we fire those who have the courage to stand up for their beliefs, our media is attackink everything that is remotely christian, our judges are turning our legal system any way they please...and the public feels impotent, frustrated for not being able to do anything about it.
Our youngsters are confused, they feel they need to turn their attention to something different ,something that would give them stability, strong religious beliefs and the safety of belonging...and they cannot find any of these things in our current politically corect society...so they turn to islam.
As long as we maintain this national suicidal trajectory,we will continue to lose our children to islam,we will continue to retreat step by step, until we will find ourselves with our back against a wall.
We are almost there.
God bless America.
Mel Gibson film will hopefuly be able to achieve more than anyone on this planet could even dream of.It is a more powerful tool than any weapon that we now have in our military arsenal, because it will work on our minds.
I agree Adela. We have work to do here without a doubt.
Posted by: Wild Hare at February 28, 2004 12:36 PMI wonder when we'll send US troops to silence the terror threats of Elohim City? Remember the Alfred P. Murrah building bombing?
Posted by: Some Guy at February 28, 2004 3:01 PMWith regard to Somalia and Ethiopia, we could always just use them to send all of the garbage barges there, to dump the world's trash.....They're dirtholes anyway....filled with cocky stiff necked arrogant cusses.
Posted by: D.C. Watson at February 28, 2004 5:03 PMGive me a break, Adela!
Islam is only growing because Muslims are breeding like rabbits. People are leaving Islam in droves, if not overtly then covertly.
As to the Christian baloney "for everyone" that you espouse, I'm sorry. But, kids need discipline and education from parents not a lot of BS religion. Where is your religious dogmatism any better than any other? Your position that without religion one cannot be moral is just plain wrong. I don't want to see Christian or any other religious symbols in public places that are funded by my tax dollars!
Mel Gibson's movie will turn an awful lot of people off—as has already been reported in the press. Gratuitous violence should be saved for horror films. There is nothing spiritual about a man being tortured to death—in slow motion.
We need separation of Church and State. And the Church needs to clean house! The leaders of the Church, whether Catholic or Protestant are all too often not exactly paragons of virtue.
We are not losing our children to Islam. Get a grip, woman!

Posted by: Lilith at February 29, 2004 12:10 AMLilith,it is obvious you deny the reality, otherwise how would you explain the actions of:John Walker Lindt,John Mohamad,Andersen and many, many others.
I didn`t hear you complaining about violence and i`m sure you saw the movie "Gladiator",i didn` hear the media, the rabbis or the people of Germany complaining about the movie "Shindler`s list",i didn`t hear the people of Japan complaining about the movie Pearl Harbor" and so on.
Today i saw the "Passion"...i have never in my life seen people standing in lines,5 deep and half a mile long,to get tickets...until today.
I will not say it was a good movie, and i won`t say i enjoyed it..but it was very powerful and long term,it will polarize our entire nation, which was founded on the judeo-christian beliefs.
And that is important, because right now we are divided and confused and therefore, vulnerable.
God bless America.
Adela-
I cant find myself agreeing any more. That (immorality) which is bombarding islam (as it is christianity, judaism, budhism etc..) leaves me with a great sence of regret. Glad to know Americans aknowlege that!

Ahmad

Hmm. Dogma vs. Dogma. Surely only peace and tranquility can result!
Wake up, people. Mass suffering breeds mass violence. When you have millions of angry, impoverished, and humiliated people, you have a sure crowd for any rabble rouser. Who would have taken Hitler seriously if Weimar Germany have been prosperous? Likewise, Osama bin Laden would not have such a wide spead following without the repressed of the earth.
Islamic Nationalism is like Marxism in that it is a universalist philosophy preaching its own triumphal inevitability and presenting itself as an alternative to liberal democracy.
Initially, if it comes to military conflict, even with the whole of the Islamic world, the United States will win. Not because it has God on its side, for who ever claims that God takes side in battlefield butchery is a liar. The Americans will win because they understand the arts and sciences of war, technology and economics like no other power or peoples in history.
But then, she cannot win the peace. She cannot change peoples hearts through force alone. We are not like the fascists or Soviets in that we resort to the most brutal methods to achieve our goals.
Both we and Israelis must realize that if a man is deprived of dignity, he will can be expected, no matter how misguided, to pick up a sword in its stead-even if he can expect to be shot down.
Posted by: Wickbam at February 29, 2004 11:55 PMOne more question to Lilith.
If you are a partisan of separation between church and state,i am one ,too.
I am not a religious fanatic,i seldomly go to church, like twice a year,on Christmas and Easter.
However i cannot fail to aknowledge the teaching of our judeo-christian rooted culture and their validity.
I am the first to admit that one could be a religious zealot and commit horrible inhuman acts, just as well as an atheist could be a kind and gentle person.
But having said that,i would be curious to ask you this:
which one of the ten commendments, specifically, has offended you,and if any, why?!
and if any of them has offended you,why have them removed from a gov.building?!...and please don`t repeat the church/state separation thing as your answer.
For a total separation would not be only ridiculous, but also imposible.
It would mean new currency, for the existing one has the "in god we trust"logo.
It would also mean,to some point ,the prohibition of expressions like "god forbid","oh,my god!","so help me god","god help me",etc.
What i`m saying is that this country has been founded on judeo-christian moral values and has continued to function very efficiently until now.
Some people like yourself are trying to turn it upside down, either because they are of a different faith, such as muslims(who have their own agenda of world domination)or because they are atheists, liberals who believe they have invented the wheel.
Most people, however(myself included),want to protect our history, our culture, our traditions and, yes, our faith...and in doung so,we are trying to protect this great country of ours, our beloved America....what`s wrong with that???!!!
