Guarding the mujahedin
To the accompaniment of lawyerly howls, the British are questioning four of the five British citizens released from Guantanamo and returned to Britain yesterday. From the BBC, with thanks to Filtrat:
A lawyer representing two of the four Britons released from Guantanamo Bay has criticised their treatment as police began questioning the group.A fifth man, Jamal Udeen, was released without charge after the men returned to the UK from Cuba on Tuesday night.
The US released the men - held as terrorism suspects for two years - saying they presented a low risk.
Gareth Peirce, who represents Shafiq Rasul and Asif Iqbal, said police were "compounding two years of injustice".
She said Tuesday night's procedures had gone on far too long, been unnecessary and protracted with fingerprinting continuing until after midnight.
"It was very clear that they should have been allowed to sleep long before they were and it was very clear that their cells were too cold," she said.
Mr Rasul, 26, and Mr Iqbal, 22, are being held at the police station along with Ruhal Ahmed, 22, all of Tipton, West Midlands and Tarek Dergoul, 26, of east London.
But the National Co-ordinator for Terrorism, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke, said normal British law and procedures would be followed "to the letter."
Father's angerMr Ahmed's father Riasoth told how his family was distraught at his son's arrest after two years being held as a detainee.
Speaking outside his home in Tipton, Mr Ahmed said: "For 18 months, I have been saying he is not a terrorist. I want them to release my boy and I want to see my boy."
He continued: "Do you think my family's happy? My wife has been crying for the last 18 months and I am angry. They should let him go free.
He has still not managed to speak to his son since his release.
"My government have not given me a chance to see my boy."
The men can be held for up to 14 days without charge under the Terrorism Act 2000.
Police will want to question them over alleged involvement in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.
The four men were arrested by the Metropolitan Police who boarded their flight at RAF Northolt in north west London shortly after it landed on Tuesday night.
They were examined by medical teams before being questioned.
Mr Ahmed's lawyer, Greg Powell, said it was "outrageous" a man who would have been very confused on returning to the UK after spending two years in detention had been arrested.
And Paul Quigley, a friend of Mr Ahmed's family, said: "The family believe that if there were any evidence that Ruhal had done anything wrong, the Americans would already have used it against him".
Meanwhile, Mr Udeen has been reunited with his family, according to a female relative.
His sister Maxine Fiddler has gone to meet him outside Manchester, said the woman speaking from Ms Fiddler's home.
Earlier his solicitor, Robert Lizar, said the 37-year-old wanted the US authorities to answer "for the injustice he had suffered" and believed the UK authorities had been "complicit" in his detention questioning him while he is in Cuba.
Four other Britons - Feroz Abbasi, 23, Richard Belmar, 23, and Martin Mubanga, 29, all from London, plus Moazzam Begg, 36, from Birmingham - are still detained at Guantanamo Bay.
Home Secretary David Blunkett has indicated they would probably face trial in the US as they had been picked up "in the combat zone" in Afghanistan.

Their cells were too cold? I doubt they had heated chalets in Tora Bora, when they were fighting for the Taliban. Or maybe they should be sent back to Cuba. Cuba is a warm tropical climate.
Posted by: basil at March 10, 2004 11:00 AMthey were prisoners of war. one should be careful who his friends are. they could land you in guantanamo.
Posted by: ted at March 10, 2004 11:35 AMSo tell me does this big bad government (as you put it) release dangerous people?
last time i checked the only criminals that this government doesn't lock up is Kiddy fiddlers and homos
Posted by: Umar at March 10, 2004 11:46 AMi think the issue is people view america as the symbol of good criminal justic system and not a country that uses torture. so when america slightly
deviates from the view that people hold it to its a big deal. I have no doubt there is some bad folks as guantanamo and also do not doubt there are some people who where rounded up by accident.
Hmmmn, deleting my posts....ok
Posted by: Umar at March 10, 2004 12:04 PMA reminder for Marcos/Umar (who seem to be the same individual) and others:
I will generally leave up most rantings, no matter how silly, but I will generally delete posts containing foul language and obscenities.

Thank you Robert...
I don't mind alittle swearing. If the person makes a point with it.
I do not see that Umar or whatever name he is using is really is adding anything to the topics posted. He is just a griefer.
Kiddy fiddler? thats disgusting and has nothing to do with this page...
Homos? Last time I checked its not a crime in the in the United States and again has nothing to do with this page.
Stay on topic Umar. Or stick to lurking....
Delete on Robert!
Posted by: Wild Hare at March 10, 2004 1:19 PMHey Umar.....I've had some of my posts deleted in the past because I went off on people that make idiotic remarks, like yourself.
Get over it, or go play somewhere else..Obviously, you are here to irritate, which is fine. After all, we've dealt with Joseph for some time now, and we're accustomed to ridiculous commentary.
You know Umar, and Marcos for that matter, sometimes, I wish we could all sit in a big room, at the same time, and have the discussions we have on this site. Know what I mean Radicals?
I have a distinct feeling that your attitudes would change, or your appearance would.

Posted by: D C Watson at March 10, 2004 1:21 PMThankyou Nathan, for reminding us all again of just one of muhammeds 'little deviences'
I feel I must back you up by printing out, again,the verse we are all referring to;
Hadith by Sahih Bukhari
Volume 5, Book 58, Number 234:
"The Prophet engaged me when I was a girl of six (years). We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Bani-al-Harith bin Khazraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became Allright, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, "Best wishes and Allah's Blessing and a good luck." Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's Apostle came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age."
Vol.5 book58,#236;
" Khadija died three years before the Prophet departed to Medina. He stayed there for two years or so and then he married 'Aisha when she was a girl of six years of age, and he consumed that marriage when she was nine years old"
As far as I can remember, Umar, Muhammed wasn't locked up either.
Great Britain is in a Great Danger right now and they seem to be oblivious or plain tired of living in a free country.
The law of sharia is closing down on them and they worry about the prisoners being released from Guantanamo.
If i could ,i would shake these countries or governments,to wake them up from this dangerous lethargy.

Speaking of child sex abuse, apparently it is not solely a Christian phenomenon:

Could this be the root of Marcos/Umar's rage?
Posted by: basil at March 10, 2004 3:40 PMTrading a warm cell in Cuba for a cold one in Britain to be near mommy and daddy. Poor babies. They should have thought of that before skulking off to Afghanistan. Britain needs to worry more about becoming Islamized than the rights of these four that will only speed up the process if and when released.
Posted by: epg at March 10, 2004 4:11 PMwhat is the actual percentange of the british population that is muslim? what is the ammount of british govt officials who are muslim...
you guys are acting like christianity is on the verge of being crushed....
england is not shifting to sharia law nor is the united states or canada....
there is way to many christians in these countries for that to happen. personally im agaisnt christian law (not sure if we have that in the united states) i prefer religion to have no part in law or govt...
by the way where did the "5th wave" or "5th column" phraise that is said here come from???
Posted by: joseph at March 10, 2004 4:50 PMJoe would you be refering to:

If so.. I can explain it to you if need it.

Posted by: basil at March 10, 2004 7:00 PMDon't feel bad Marcos/Umar. I've had my posts taken off and all I did was suggest that if the terrorists/militant muslims keep doing their thing to us, we should realize that this is a religious war and use the model of war outlined by Clausewitz in his book "On War". Of course that would require the total annihilation of all major muslim places of worship, including the cities of Mecca and Medina and all mosques and centers for islamic study. Mr. Spencer apparently feels that is too radical and violent and won't allow those ideas to be freely circulated on his site. That is his right. After all, it's his site and he's paying for this chunk of cyber space. However I still maintain that if the muslims had the capability, they would gladly destroy us totally as their religion orders them to. I see nothing wrong with suggesting that we do unto them before they do unto us. That is the nature of total war. That is what we had to do to win WWII. It is not pretty, it is not nice. But it is war. We did not declare war on islam or the muslim fundamentalists. They declared war on everything that is not islam. They attacked us. They continue to attack us. But this post too will probably be taken down. So much for freedom of speech.
Posted by: Hal at March 10, 2004 9:32 PMHal, my friend, "freedom of speech" means you won't get arrested for saying something against the government. It doesn't mean you have carte blanche to spread your own ideas on my nickel. But I'll leave this one up, as I am abundantly on record already saying that I am not in favor of solutions that will render us morally identical to our enemies.
Cordially,
RS
I agree with Mr Spencer. Our strength is not only military. Totalitarinism has failed so many times because freedom offers more than oppression. The terrorists are very proud of their lack of respect for their (and others') lives. But a free man doesn't throw his life away. Rather, he sells it for a high price, because he recognizes its value.
I am reminded of the recent Israeli/Hezbollah prisoner exchange. The terrorists thought they were getting a very good deal, hundreds of their live prisoners for a few Israeli bodies. They saw it as a victory. But the Israelis saw it differently. They thought one dead Israeli was worth hundreds of live terrorists. That is a powerful belief, and shows the value of life versus the love of death. I will be on the side of life every time.
Posted by: basil at March 10, 2004 11:19 PMMr. Spencer, not to get too far OT and also not to sew discord, but while I agree with you in principle regarding taking the high moral road, it must also be stated that the most moral duty a government has--much the same as a husband has to his family--is to protect its citizens. If this is true, and further, if it is confirmed that the enemy is so unbalanced and homicidally delusional that said enemy will do anything to destroy a generally peaceful people, doesn't it require, in the final analysis, the government to utterly destroy the enemy by any menas possible?
Mind you, I am in no way advocating indiscriminate killing a la My Lai. What I AM advocating is, more than anything else, a symbolic destruction of, say, holy sites, for example.
I truly do not wish for this. However, many, if not most, honest historians agree that dropping the atomic bomb hastened the end of the Pacific War and therefore saved millions of lives. Couldn't a case be made that by destroying tactical targets with ease in islamic lands the large majority of those muslims who tacitly agree with the terrorists would finally "see the light" so to speak?
Thanks for the great work you do here.

Posted by: Doug at March 10, 2004 11:34 PMSome thoughts about Britain being slowly taken over by islam...
Fifty years ago,Britain was facing the mighty german war machine...a small island, isolated, battered, and on the brink of being destroyed by a ruthless enemy.
They faught vaillantly to the bitter end, ready to die rather than surrender.
Today Britain faces an even greater danger, that of being taken over by islam, they are facing the extinction of their national identity...and yet they seem to accept it as if it was ment to be and there`s nothing they could do about it.
Whatever happened to their national pride, where is their spirit of survival, and what happened to their courage and strong will?!
When,if ever, are they going to wake up and say:enough is enough, this is our country, these are our laws, this is our tradition, this is our religion...you are guests in our country and if you don`t behave, you must leave?!
Adela,USA.
Dear Adele,
I have read a few of your comments now, seemingly against the British, and feel I must respond.
The British people are NOT just sitting back on this one, like I said to you in one of my posts, It is the fact that we are victims, like all other western nations at this time of the left wing, 'politically correct' crowd.
Many British are SO frustrated at whats going on, they are beggining to vote for extreme right wing partys like the British National Party, who, as a result gained seats on city councils in the north of England last year.
http://www.politics-agora.com/thread13037-1
(I in NO WAY support this party, I mention it only to make you aware of the tensions here)
As a result the govt. set about putting severe restrictions on assylum seekers etc.
Much of the media you are getting your information from is left wing, read from the right wing media here in England and you get a different picture.
England is under particular attack by Islam, as one of the muslim leaders here stated a while back; "If we can win London we will win Europe"
So Adele, Please ease off on the 'Brit bashing' We have been great allies for many years, and need to stick together at this time, not throw stones at each other.
with all respect,
kc.
kc, I don't ask this as a smarta$$, but I really have to know: What's wrong with supporting a far-right party? I know nothing about the British Nationalist Party, but I seriously doubt it is anything close to what used to pass for far-right. I guess what I'm getting at is simply that it seems that PC sensibilities have so infiltrated all our mindsets that we--even run-of-the-mill conservatives--all tiptoe around speaking our minds and do our best to disassociate ourselves from anything that might cause us to be made fun of by the "enlightened" media/academic elite.
If the BNP is gaining seats, they must be doing something right.

just on my way to work at the min. so dont have time to answer fully, but heres their web site...hopefully that should explain everything!

This message for KC,as a response to his post:
None of the messages that i have posted on this board so far, have any intention of "brit bashing"
My last message was a comment of the above article, about the 5 british citizens who have returned home, from the Guantanamo prison.
It seems that the british government and media have spent a lot of time and energy to bring these people back home and have given them more credibility than the one given to the american authorities...now they are even going to file a law suit!
My comments were also adressing the lethargy that the briton public oppinion shows in this matter.
If you didn`t notice,i have praised the way the britons conducted themselves during WWII,i admire their courage and determination, but i also wandered what happened to these brave people ,to allow to be conquered from within, with almost no sign of resistance?!
Such comments perfectly apply to all other western european countries and their respective governments as well as to our beloved american nation.
I am a proud american and i love my country,i respect our history and admire our achievements,i stand up for our traditional and moral values ,for our religious beliefs and for anything that is american.
My comments were adressed to the situation in Great Britain, for nobody really expects France or any other european country such as Germany,Belgium, etc to have the courage and stand up for their beliefs.
It seems that it is more convenient for them to just hide behind PC rethorics and to allow their nations to be slowly taken over....however,Britain is a completely different story,it has been throughout modern history and the western world looks up to it,to show some kind of leadership in this crucial matter.
If the general briton public does not agree with the left orientation of their government and media, maybe it should start to do something about it and make their voice heard.
We`re sure trying our best ,here in the US.
But when i read articles praising the construction of a new mosque in Britain, when i read statements made by Britain-based imams ,declaring "when we take over London,Europe is ours",or "the future of England is Islam",when i hear all these things,i cannot help but ask myself and people like you:what`s being done about this?!
I would also like to read the publications that you reffered to,but i`m not familiar with the british media and i cannot locate any such publications.
Adela,USA.
Hi adele,
Ive tried sending you an e-mail to sort out anglo-american relations (!) but cant get thru, please could you send me an e-mail with your address on??
Thankyou, kc.
