The Economist this week partakes of Bushitler hysteria — although the one with the red X over his face, as in the famous 1945 Time cover, is Spain's Aznar.

ADDENDUM: I neglected to note yesterday that the anti-terror leaders are depicted on playing cards, a la the Iraqi high command. So The Economist has declared its allegiance in two ways.

Aznar was not voted out of office. He was retiring and handing over party leadership to a successor.
So I'm at loss to explain how the Economist can describe him as "one down." He was already out.
Posted by: Susan at March 20, 2004 4:56 PMInteresting that the Ecomomist would go so far into red journalism. I think it says a lot about the future of Europe. Hatred there seems out of control, and I am sure they would never compare even the most repulsive dictators to Hitler. When did the Economist ever take a stand against Saddam, Mugabe Kim Jong Il, or any other bloody-handed monster? Don't hold your breath.
Europe is going down a very dark road (again). Selling itself to Islamists, Socialists, anarchists, etc. is suicidal. Americans don't yet understand the depth of hatred Europe feels, but once they do, I imagine they will write the continent off. No more American bailouts, no protection from the jihadis in their midst. The Clash said it best: "London is drowning and I live by the river".
Posted by: basil at March 20, 2004 7:55 PMAmerican realization of the depth of European hatred is already noted by many Americans. The fact that Kerry wants to align himself with these backstabbers is one of the reasons that I wouldn't have him on the proverbial silver platter.
Posted by: epg at March 20, 2004 8:26 PMIt is truly facinating what is transpiring in the world today. Things are happening in my life time that I thought the world had gotten over.
Is Europe really going into the darkness of facism once again?
I believe that Europe is going to go once again into a dark and trying time in history.
Europe is in a state of denial about its own scocial and immigrant problems and use anti Americaism as a drug to forget the problems that they are facing.
Let America leave Europe to solve thier own problems she owes them nothing.
If you hadn't noticed, the Economist supported the Iraq war effort. Even after finding no WMD's, they editorialized that it was worthwhile to take out Saddam.
In fact I claim the Economist is one of the few unbiased news sources left in the world; get off thier back.
Posted by: JimBob at March 21, 2004 8:18 AMMy dear "JimBob":
When I read The Economist's coverage of the Islamic world and terrorism, many epithets come to my mind; "objective" is not among them.
You (or others with different presuppositions) may be interested in this article, which I originally entitled "Dhimmitude at The Economist."

With all due respect, did any of you actually read the article? I agree that the cover may send the wrong message, but the text tells an entirely different story
"...there is no escaping the fact that the biggest triumph has been that of the terrorists. ..."
"...But the tragedy of Madrid is that the terrorists in effect cast the swing vote, given that Mr Aznar's party had looked set to win a comfortable victory, despite opposition to the war, and that such success may now stimulate more terrorism during the other three electoral campaigns. ..."
"...Mr Zapatero even appears to think that pulling troops out of Iraq will make things better, on the view that the occupation is itself the cause of terrorism. Yet that policy is irresponsible, because it increases the risk of civil war in Iraq. ..."
Hardly an endorsement of Aznar's defeat.
Posted by: Lynn B. at March 21, 2004 1:34 PMDear Lynn B.:
Those statements are encouraging. Unfortunately they don't overcome the impression created by many other Economist articles.
Moreover, the intent of the cover is, in my view, quite plain. Those who designed may or may not share the views espoused within the article itself.

I say we leave the central European Continent, remove our forces from Central Europe, The Backstabbing French can remember this; the only reason they do not speak German or Russian is because we arranged that way, with the British.
I say we need only concern ourselves with those that are with us, not against us-when it comes to protection.
When the Islamic Extremist, Russian or German hoard comes marching in-they have to keep the French. No if, ands, or buts about it. They can wet nurse them till hell freezes over. I hope the Islamic Extremist demonstrate their nuclear weapons capabilities in Paris first, it would be a good show for all to watch.
