Yassin's coffin, on the way to the gates of hell
They'll open the gates of hell? What have they been doing up to now? In this broadcast transcript from Australia's ABC Online, at least there is some clarity about what Yassin meant to the jihadis — a sharp contrast to the "old man in a wheelchair" blather coming from Jack Straw.
TONY JONES: And we'll cross now to our correspondent, Mark Willacy, who is in Jerusalem, Mark, let's start with the reaction in Gaza.Right now we're seeing grief and rage.
What do you think that's going to develop into?
MARK WILLACY: Well, we're seeing not only grief and rage but we're seeing some violence, particularly in southern Gaza, we're hearing reports of up to five Palestinians killed in clashes with Israelis.
Obviously tens of thousands are turning out for the funeral, that's still going on, but we're hearing that afterwards the Israeli security forces are bracing for more violence, particularly in Gaza, but there are also reports of violence in the West Bank, particularly in places like Hebron and Nablus.
TONY JONES: Naturally some pretty tough rhetoric from surviving Hamas leaders.
They're talking about open war, they're talking about opening the gates of hell.
Do they still have the capacity to strike Israel back hard?
MARK WILLACY: Very much so, Tony.
They're saying, "Look we've got young people knocking on our doors since the assassination of Sheikh Yassin, asking to be suicide bombers, begging to be able to avenge these killings."
So certainly Hamas has quite a large militia it can call on.
The killing of Sheikh Yassin is certainly a massive blow.
This man is the founder, he's the spiritual leader of this movement.
Israel says he's a bit more than that, that he's also planner, he's also the executor of a lot of these attacks.
But we can imagine that Hamas certainly still has the capability to strike back.
TONY JONES: Who's going to replace him in the leadership of this organisation, particularly the spiritual leadership, if that's indeed all he was?
MARK WILLACY: Well, we're hearing from Palestinians that he's irreplaceable.
He is the founder.
He is the spiritual leader of Hamas.
He embodies what Hamas is up to.
We're hearing from that perspective there will be no replacement as such in Sheikh Yassin's role.
We'll just see more political leaders, the military wing come into its own to respond to this assassination.
So I don't think we will see a direct replacement for Sheikh Yassin.

What's this? a religious group (ha ha) is threatening to "open the gates of hell" ??
It's great when these people get upset, because their true colors come shinin' through.
Posted by: D C Watson at March 22, 2004 10:24 AMIncidentally, this was no helpless, crippled up old man in a wheelchair. This peice of work ordered more killings of Israelis than we can imagine. He was evil, murderous, and the world is suffering no great loss because of his death....Bye Bye Heretic. Oh, it looks like he left this life missing a shoe.
Posted by: D C Watson at March 22, 2004 10:27 AMThe "pen is mightier than the sword," this time the pen issued fatwahs of death and distruction. Evil comes in the most weak and innocent-looking packages.
Of course, death, mayhem, violence, revenge, anything is "correct" in the name of Islam. Christians that would respond in this manner in the name of Christianity would be condemned. These people are, indeed, showing the true face of Islam. Amen.
Posted by: epg at March 22, 2004 10:44 AMNow he ain't got a leg to stand on. hahahahahahah.
arafat is next.
The gates of Hell? I imagine they are referring to some Palestinean area, maybe Gaza...They certainly seem upset about killing an old man in a wheelchair; for a moment I thought maybe they were apologizing for murdering a crippled American on the Achille Lauro cruiseship. Then I figured out they weren't.
But seriously, the interview indicates that Yassin has no replacement. This killing is paying immediate dividends, then.
On his coffin they should write "So you want to be a terror mastermind..."
Posted by: basil at March 22, 2004 10:56 AMThe 36 articles of the Hamas Charter that where revealed in 1988 in English are laced with death to Jews, and Infidels throughout it, and in the name of Allah. Though Article 6 states it is a distinct Palestinian movement which owes its loyalty to Allah, Many Islamic terrorist groups have picked up its banner. Article 8- "The slogan of Hamas" states that Allah is its goal, the Prophet its model, the Quran its Constitution, and its path and death for the case of Allah its most sublime belief. Article 13- makes it clear that there is no solution to the Palestinian problem except by jihad. Intitiatives, proposals, and international conferences are but a waste and exercise in futility. This is probably why Yassar Arafat rejected the offer that was made to him at Camp David in 1998. Their goals are clear in the Hamas Charter, and that is to rid the land of Israel of all Jews, Christains, and or infidels.
Posted by: Mackie at March 22, 2004 11:03 AMSadly, this is a good day for the world.
But what is a sheer and utter marvel is this:
Jacob from Israel, one of my dearest
friends, represents 97% of Israelis in
that he harbors not one ounce of
out-and-out hatred for the Arab
"Palestinians" despite the sub-moral,
animal-like level to which they
have so tragically sunk.
Friend Jacob will quote you this famous
saying, yet without a single ounce or tinge
of human hatred, but only as a saying of
truth and fact:
"One can never trust an Arab -- even
if he has been in the ground 40 years."
No hatred, only fact.
. . . . . . .
I am humanly touched by this Israeli trait:
Even though boiling anger is a justifiable
emotion in response to the never-ending
Arab murder sprees against Israeli civilians,
the over-arching emotion in my friend Jacob,
and I believe all other Israeli's, too, is
PITY !
What a credit to the humanity and character of
the Israeli people.
-- Bill from Maryland
The Israelis are clearly trying to escalate the violence before pulling out of Gaza. Perhaps the thinking is that if an all-out war starts, it will spill over into a confrontation between Hamas and the PA.
If the Palestinians murder each other, Israel won't have to.

Posted by: Lilith at March 22, 2004 11:12 AMIn solidarity with our palestinean brethren, myself and Mrs. Basil will be handing out candies and treats to youngsters in celebration of this joyous occasion. She will be heavily veiled, of course. You know, these palestinean death celebrations are more fun that I could have imagined, thanks to the palestineans for teaching me about them after 9/11. Now, who wants some sweets?
Posted by: basil at March 22, 2004 11:28 AMAnd of course don't forget the inspiration from the Protocols of the Elders of Zion that are another inspiration for Hamas.
"Today it is Palestine, tomorrow it will be one country or another. The Zionist plan is limitless. After Palestine, the Zionists aspire to expand from the Nile to the Euphrates. When they will have digested the region they overtook, they will aspire to further expansion, and so on. Their plan is embodied in the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion", and their present conduct is the best proof of what we are saying."

The charter is worth reading in full.
Posted by: Curious Citizen from Sweden at March 22, 2004 12:22 PMGood riddance. They rejoiced when an old man in a wheelchair was murdered on a cruise ship, a man who had never harmed anyone, and now they want revenge for the execution of an old man in a wheelchair who plotted the killing of thousands. Bill from MD, tell your Israeli friend I agree with him. Basil, as soon as I finish off the chips and salsa here I'll have an after dinner mint. It's a good day.
Posted by: Hal at March 22, 2004 1:49 PMWe need to "escalate the violence" until not a single terrorist breathes. The roots of jihad and all its garrulous flowers need to be thrown on the compost pile of human history.
Posted by: Tenebrous at March 22, 2004 3:19 PMi believe arafat killed him in a conspiracy with islamic jihad. ya know theres nothing better than arab on arab violence.
Posted by: Yassin ischoppedmeat at March 22, 2004 3:59 PMLOL, is there even anything in that coffin? Israel is going to have to start mowing people down if the paleswinians wrap themselves up in bombs and start walking over. Frankly, I think we should just nuke the place and be done with it. Those alleged humans (paleswinians) have absolutely no redeeming qualities, whatsoever. Why does Yasser Terrorfat still have a job?

Posted by: Jennifer Martinez at March 22, 2004 6:06 PMThey shall open the gates of hell, and they will be the first ones through. Jews and Christians will not run from the muslims and hide.
Posted by: christian at March 22, 2004 8:26 PMI am happy to hear that Bill's friend Jacob typifies the response of the Israelis. Truthfully, it is sad that the Palestinian people have elected to hate the Israelis so much. I wish they would believe the biblical comment made from G-d to Abraham: "He who blesses you shall be blessed and he who curses you shall be cursed." Throughout history this promise has been seen to happen over and over again. Where are the Egyptians? The Persians? The Babylonians? Medes or Greeks? Where are the Romans? or Hitler's third Reich? All are in the dust bin of history. All are gone. The Palestinians specifically, and the Muslims at large, are making a serious mistake by going up against the Israelis. They are courting suicide.
As to "the old man in the wheelchair," if Hitler had made it to his 90's, would the liberals have said that the Israelis had killed the poor old man with Parkinson's?

Posted by: herbdoctor at March 23, 2004 8:31 AMExactly right.
Posted by: D C Watson at March 23, 2004 9:06 AMHistorically; the word Palestine was given to the region when the Romans once conquered it. Prior to 1947 there where very few arabs in the area known as Gaza. The Jews have been there since the time of David. It was only when Israel became a country did arabs from Jordan,Egypt,Lebanon,Iraq, and Saudia Arabia begin to come into the region mostly because the Jews gave them jobs. and they grew more the 20 fold since 1948. And when the Arabs saw the Jews begin to prosper, they attacked both in 1949, and in 1967. In both campaigns the arabs lost and Israel rightfully gained ground" nearly 200 pct." mostly to protect themselves from these aggressors who have always made Jihad a requirement of Islam.
