FBI's Mueller Warns of Election-time Terrorist Plots

The Economist gives the terrorists a guide to which countries to target next

As is well known, the Madrid bombings and their aftermath have taught the terrorists that terrorism works. Expect more of it. From AP, with thanks to Mrs. Obelix and DC Watson:

The deadly train bombings in Spain and the impact they had on Spanish elections are increasing concern that terrorists might target the U.S. presidential nominating conventions and the Olympics to make an even bolder statement, FBI Director Robert Mueller says.

"We understand that between now and the election, there is a window of time in which terrorists may well wish to influence events, whether it's in the United States or overseas," Mueller said in an interview with The Associated Press.

He also said Islamic extremists are changing tactics to focus on recruitment of local sympathizers less likely to arouse suspicion than outsiders. And terrorist groups may well move away from fortified targets, such as airports and government buildings, he said Thursday.

"I do believe that when we enhance our security, harden targets, terrorists look for other targets that are soft targets," Mueller said. When new security measures are taken, he said, "the terrorists are thinking about ways to circumvent them."

The March 11 train bombings in Madrid that killed 190 people were a factor in the ouster of Spain's government. That has added to uneasiness about the U.S. political conventions in New York and Boston this summer.

"In the wake of what happened in Madrid, we have to be concerned about the possibility of terrorists attempting to influence elections in the United States by committing a terrorist act," Mueller said. "Quite clearly, there will be substantial preparations for each of the conventions."

If there is an attempt to influence elections in the U.S. with a terrorist attack, I think it's going to backfire. Americans don't run scared. If anything, it will unite the country once again, like 9/11 did (at least for a while).

I should hope that it does pull us together as we were right after 9/11. However, there is a number of people in this country that would hope that it would divide and confuse us. We must all be aware of the terrorists desire to divide us, and decide to stand together against that.

Appeasement in Spain will cost many lives around the world. The Pandora box is open.

Terrorists have been attempting to stage another attack against us, and will continue to do so. I doubt it matters much when the election is, or who is President. When they can hit us, they will. They are equal opportunity murderers.

Just when we think we have the terrorists figured out.....they strike in a totaly differant manner.
Who knows what or where their next strike will be? It could be on many fronts at the same time. It could be the Olympics. Who knows. They are diabolicale and evil in their designs of terror. We just don't know. AND....We Americans STILL ignore the face of the enemy (ISlamic Militant fundamentalist). We are too PC, and too divided. The Dems would love to see the economy sink, another attack...whatever in their blind thirst for POWER. It makes me sick to my stomach!
If we throw GOD out of the equation (Pledge of Alegance) then we desearve whatever happens to us!

"If we throw GOD out of the equation (Pledge of Alegance) then we desearve whatever happens to us!"

I could really care less about this being in the pledge of allegiance but when I see far right wing conservatives so intent on throwing their beliefs in my direction, it makes me think they can be just as bad as the Taliban. what ever happened to the split between church and state.
The pledge of allegiance is a spec in comparison but bush and his cohorts throwing their religious beliefs at me is making me sick...
Freedom of speech, stem cell research, gay marriages....etc.

I'm no Kerry supporter so it look like this will be another election year for me where i think both candidates can go straight to hell.

Where have you been? Rightwing conservatives touting gay marriage, stem cell research, taking God out of the Pledge? You ARE confused. That kind of thing is lefty thinking. As for the Right Wing "throwing" their thinking on the rest of us, consider that the Left has insidiously altered our thought by infiltrating universities, the government, and even the Church. Perhaps you don't see how they have "thrown" a blanket of dangerous ideology onto us for years which has smothered our culture.

Maybe I didnt make myself clear. I know very well the right speaks against these issues and that is what sickens me because they are religiously biased. The freedom of speech thing dates back to Janet Jacksons boob and the FCCs desire (headed up my Micahel Powel) to stifle memebers of broadcasting to stifle such personlities that speak against George Bush. See Topic.... Howard Stern....

"...The Left has insidiously altered our thought by infiltrating universities, the government, and even the Church"

You forgot to mention their most important flagship. The Justice System!

The right are "religiously biased." Does that mean that Muslims are part of the American right, because they sure as hell are religiously biased.

And aren't the Left also religiously biased? Isn't the Marxist dogma the religion of the proletariat? The left's bias has created a poisonous counterculture of lies and hate.

Who's next on the election agenda...the Canadians?

Posted by: Macker at March 27, 2004 7:49 AM

look to your side when you stand together...look at who you're standing behind...in my opinion, the vote in spain does not reflect the bowing to terrorism : it was an internal issue and a surfacing of what was true all along : that 90% of the country did not want to go to war in the first place. although, of course the outcome of the elections changed but by the looks of some reports, it was close enough for that change to happen in the first place.
