Iqbal Sacranie (BBC)
What? You mean they haven't been doing this all along? From ABC:
Britain's Muslim leaders are urging followers of Islam to cooperate with the authorities to fight terrorism. There is fear in the Muslim community that it will be stigmatised following the arrest of eight suspected terrorists and the seizure of half a tonne of the bomb making ingredient ammonium nitrate fertiliser.
The Muslim Council of Britain is concerned the public is already linking terrorism to followers of Islam.
I appreciate this concern. The MCB would have an easier task ahead if there weren't so many Muslims linking terrorism to followers of Islam.
General Secretary Iqbal Sacranie has reiterated that attacks like the recent bombings in Madrid are not sanctioned or supported by the wider Islamic community. He is calling on Muslims to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to police.
Prime Minister Tony Blair has congratulated Mr Sacranie for his public appeal.

"Mohammed Sulaiman blamed al-Muhajiroun, the radical group led by London-based cleric Sheikh Omar Bakri Muhammad, for exploiting disaffected youths in high-unemployment areas such as the Bedfordshire town."
"It comes as the father of one of the men arrested claimed that the influence of fanatics at Langley Green mosque, in Crawley, had led his son to worship with radicals and "bomb-makers".

Maybe we will hear more voices from these 'moderate muslims' in the UK.
MJ:
"Maybe we will hear more voices from these 'moderate muslims' in the UK."
Heck, I'd be pleased to hear ANY voices from these "moderate muslims"- ANYWHERE on the planet.
Perhaps the actions of these jihadi psychopaths are finally resulting in a civic threat to the remainder of the UK muslim population. Even a cursory understanding of the history of Christianity reveals that when we go Old Testament on someone, Christians take a back seat to no one when it comes to inflicting severe unpleasantry. And British resilience and tenacity?- the Brits beat the Germans at their national game twice in the last century...
Posted by: Earl at March 31, 2004 11:55 AMReading the full article....What, in fact, is meant by "indiscriminate violence"? You mean as opposed to specific or condoned violence. Whose suspicious activity should be reported? Muslim terrorists, or investigators?
Posted by: milford at March 31, 2004 12:12 PMMilford, Milford, Milford....
Does nuance entirely escape you? ;)
Posted by: Earl at March 31, 2004 12:20 PMIn country for less than one generation and already they're plotting to kill our innocents. What kind of psychopathology drives this ersatz religious culture? Envy and lust or piety and faith, certainly its not the latter.
Folks, the gloves as the old saying goes are about to come off... Wonder how many of them were on welfare. Gives new meaning to state sponsored terrorism.
Posted by: bobnoxious at March 31, 2004 1:01 PMAt least people here in the UK are actually starting to talk openly about islam and links to terrorism. The last year or two anybody who tried was called a racist. We aren't even supposed to have any pro-Israel linked activism in my university due 'sympathies for the zionist entity which have been constituted a form of racism and apartheid by student union resolutions'. Leila khaled can be invited as a guest speaker though...
Posted by: miguidedjihadi at March 31, 2004 1:14 PMI am glad that politically correct is finally out the window. Invited guests have turned on their hosts, something that would not be tolerated in Muslim countries, hypocritical to say the least.
The gloves are off and the thin "veneer of civilization" here is about to be peeled back to expose the aroused tiger.
Posted by: epg at March 31, 2004 1:32 PMSilly, silly me Earl...

This is a non-issue. Muslim leaders have already been urging fellow muslims to help in the struggle against terrorism. Right?
Right???
Posted by: David at March 31, 2004 4:10 PMI find the whole thing silly. Why would Britons asks the most moderates to say anything about it. I know they ask Jews to speak to just about anything they don't like about Israeli policy, bu the whole thing is idiotic.
Can you picture them asking Russian immigrants to repudiate something or another about Russian policy in Chechnya?
The whole thing is a play at emotions - and not of those of the immigrants, believe me.
Seems like a nice thing for the muslims to do, but it is a little to late; all believe that muslims and islam are both the evil.
Posted by: christian at March 31, 2004 8:50 PMMuslims, although evil, have a very sophysticated craftmanship of articulating ,twisting, molding and finessing words.
Every single phrase spoken by a muslim, can have tens of diferent interpretations and nuances, depending on who stated it,to whom, when, why,in the presence of whom, etc.
And only them, muslims can see those fine subnuances in their arabesque speech.
What this Sacrani character actually said is :" we mulims are sorry that our muslim brothers got cought before being able to blow up whatever they planned to,and we hope that those who follow in their steps, will manage to reach their goals without being cought...also,muslims brothers have to be more careful not to kill any muslims,by mistake or otherwise, they will have to be more selective, more discriminate when they plan their attacks,in such a way that only infidels will be killed...in the mean time, our muslim brothers must be very vigilant and make sure they will not be detected by the british intelligence".
I only hopw the britons will not be fooled by such blatant lies and will expose the muslim cancer that grows in their society.
