Videotape Shows Captive American Soldier

capt.lon81104162315.iraq_kidnapping_lon811.jpeg

This wave of kidnappings is designed, of course, to compel concessions. Judging from recent events in Spain and the mixed reaction to the killing of the Italian hostage, this is not an unreasonable hope. From AP:

BAGHDAD, Iraq - An American soldier missing for a week was shown unhurt but clearly frightened in an Arab television broadcast in which the 20-year-old was surrounded by masked gunmen who offered to exchange him for imprisoned Iraqi fighters and claimed they had more hostages.

There was no sign of what happened to a soldier who disappeared with Pfc. Keith Maupin after their convoy was attacked April 9 outside Baghdad during a wave of kidnappings blamed on anti-U.S. insurgents.

In Fallujah, west of the capital, Iraqis and U.S. officials held their second day of direct negotiations Saturday aimed at stemming violence in the besieged city. About a dozen representatives of the city met with top U.S. and civilian leaders.

"Things were very quiet in Fallujah last night, which means we are succeeding," said Hashem al-Hasani, a representative of the Iraqi Governing Council who has been mediating between the United States and city representatives.

U.S. commanders moved forces from a key bridge across the Euphrates River that also controls access to the city's hospital.

"There are a lot of risks that we accept by pulling away from the bridge so it will be a gradual process," said Col. Tom Toolan, commander of the 1st Marine Regiment.

The footage of Maupin, aired Friday, showed him in a floppy desert hat, sitting on the floor and nervously looking around. Men whose head were covered with keffiyeh scarves stood nearby.

"My name is Keith Matthew Maupin. I am a soldier from the 1st Division," he said, looking into the camera. "I am married with a 10-month-old son. I came to liberate Iraq, but I did not come willingly because I wanted to stay with my child." ...

In the video of Maupin, one of the gunmen was heard saying: "We are keeping him to be exchanged for some of the prisoners captured by the occupation forces."

"Some of our groups managed to capture one of the American soldiers, and he is one of many others. He is being treated according to the treatment of prisoners in the Islamic religion and he is in good health," the gunman said on the tape, a copy of which was dropped off at the U.S. Embassy in Doha, Qatar.

"He is being treated according to the treatment of prisoners in the Islamic religion." Islamic directives for prisoners include this:

When an adult male is taken captive, the caliph considers the interests (...of Islam and the Muslims) and decides between the prisoner's death, slavery, release without paying anything, or ransoming himself in exchange for money or for a Muslim captive held by the enemy. ('Umdat as-Salik, o9.14)

Maupin seems to be held in hopes of exchange for a captive, but if that is rejected, the kidnappers will most likely fall back on one of the other options listed here — which do include release.

Thanks Mr. Spencer for clearing up the Islamic rules for prisoners, yesterday on the news the reporters kept asking people if they knew what they were, and instead of the people saying they didn't know, they made up answers but said they were not experts.

So I suppose we should somehow make it not in Islam and the Muslims interest to kill this soldier and make it in their interest to release him.
Somehow.

Of course, the culturally-relative mainstream media won't touch the issue, Sarge.

As for Pvt. Maupin, we can only pray for his well being, and for his family. Tactically, we must assume the worst (although al-Jizma now has a useful propaganda tool for its broadcasts and he may be kept alive for such purposes.)

But, the Marines MUST be given CARTE BLANCHE to effect his release unharmed, or deliver OT justice to the entire pit of vipers that have perpetrated an atrocity against this Marine and the four other Americans. I am not suggesting collective punishment, but rather an all-out confrontation with the Islamist thugs whose existence will preclude even the slightest hope of democracy in Iraq post-30.06.04.

Enough, already, of this milquetoast "truce"/hudna nonsense- it is now time for the Yanks to seal the Iraqi borders (esp. with Syria and Iran) and proceed to kill as many islamist terrorists as possible before June 30.

I've posted it here before, but Bibi was interviewed on TVO a few years ago thusly: "The Arabs do not respect power- they worship it". And this guy knows from fighting islamists.

A very rare correction of a typo in a post by Robert. It is the "Umdat al-Salik". I have posted the ISBN, etc. of my copy before, but cannot do so now as I have lent it to a family member.

I encourage anyone posting here, who wants to better understand islam, to buy a copy. It is not cheap (IIRC, $CDN60), but you cannot hope to understand "applied islam" without it. [Note: Even it contains inaccuracies in its transalation- see, for example, Durie's demonstration that the section on female genital mutilation is watered down in this English translation from the Arabic. Also, the distinction between "greater" jihad and "lesser" jihad is also a translational fabrication.]

Thanks, Earl, but actually that is not a typo. You are correct, however, that the book is called Umdat al-Salik. But in Arabic that would be pronounced "as-Salik." Sometimes people will write Arabic names in this way in English -- hence you usually see "al-Sadr," but occasionally "as-Sadr."

So since I pronounce the title "as-Salik," sometimes I write it that way. But you are correct that the name is in fact more often written "al-Salik."

The bit on prisoners appears to not be a mistranslation, anyway. I got the same info from an 'ask the mullah' site. Though mine added that one was permitted to kill male prisoners, but not permitted to kill women or children.

I am so sick of this manipulation against the world. All of Islam is a manipulated attempt to over throw and condemn anyone that does not think like liars, theives, killers, terrorists and kidnappers. Forced thinking is not freedom. It is against the mind and what God gave every man to cherish and use. I am for total war on this faction of terror here and everywhere. As a mother with a son in Iraq, this horrifies me. He is a son of our country and we should be doing something about these cowards that would use a human being as a pawn. Justice shall be served on these criminals. They will reap what they do and vengence will be justified. Take Sadr out and all those that would do such terror to others. They deserve it!

Sarge et al:

Son is Marine in Fallujah and have received regular com from him--tho sl cryptic for obvious reasons. Thyey are really pissed at the "truce" They are 2-3 days of active fighting from checkmating these guys into small corner of Fallujah, then the Islamic chickenshit realize that they are about to get their asses wiped with their own noses, and we call a "truce". Mattes is NOT happy with this. Bush has got to give them the green lioght pretty soon or it will indeed start looking like Vietnam.

To be fair, most of the Fallujah citizenry wnats to stop this nonsense, but ANY Iriaqi there who evensmiles at an AMerican or who fail to tell the reporters that they hates us will have their throat slit. The NYTs reporters just don't get it and are basically little dumb fux.

I think the American and European public is starting to get it tho. Delenda est.

Nice comment Kathy! I'd like to add though that, based on tragic evidence, they are allowed to send their women and their children to blow themselves up in Israel! It's a war! You have to fight with bullets, not words!

Posted by: spartacus at April 17, 2004 11:47 AM

The only reason women and children aren't killed is because they are to be enslaved.

Posted by: Silvester at April 17, 2004 2:02 PM

Kathy, they change the rules to suit their circumstances. Remember the women and children on the 9-11 flights? The prohibition against killing women and children was overlooked there and later rationalized by the Muslims. Whatever they do to us is ok in their eyes because we aren't Muslims we don't get the same treatment under their laws. What can we learn fom this? They will lie, cheat, steal, murder, or do whatever it takes to advance their cause and cannot be trusted under any circumstances. It's very much akin to the old Communist ideaology that "The end justifies the means". As for treaties and contracts. look at what happened when the West found the oil reserves in Saudi and other countries. We discovered them, drilled the wells, built refineries and distribution facilities, and their governments nationalized (stole) everything.

Read and pay attention. Kipling's "the Grave of the Hundred Head" works every time.

Posted by: D.K. at April 17, 2004 4:10 PM

I'm impressed, D.K., having grown up on Kipling. Not PC by any means, but an object lesson to those who fight us!

sonmartx: We wish your son the absolute best over there. You are correct. And, with groups like the Council on American Islamic Relations operating on our own soil, your statement regarding Islamic manipulation certainly holds true.

I would suggest that if you're able, contact your State Representative's office and ask them why the Government continues allowing CAIR to operate in the US. If you go to their website, you'll find articles condemning American and Israeli activity, yet never condemning Hamas, Bin Laden, or any other terrorist group.

They claim to condemn all acts of terrorism, but they only seem to print condemnation of America, Israel, and anything non-Islamic.

Check it out.....here's the link: http://www.cair-net.org/default.asp

Ask your representative why your son is risking his life in Iraq, when groups like this are operating in America. I love America, and I fully support George Bush and all of the troops that defend us. I am just saddened that groups like CAIR, with all they've said and done are permitted to operate here. There are also a few articles regarding this organization on Frontpagemag.com and WorldNetDaily....

We should make an offer they cannot refuse:either you release the prisoner, unharmed, within the next 4 hours,or the whole city of Falujah will be leveled.
This offer should be made through Al Jazeera and it should not be negotiable in any way.
