U.S. Demands Retraction for Faked Abuse Photos

Some of the rage over the Abu Ghraib abuse photos comes not from the real thing, but from faked photos that come from a pornographic movie — and were published in the Egyptian press. From AP, with thanks to Miriam:

CAIRO, Egypt -- The U.S. Embassy demanded a retraction Wednesday for photographs published in the Egyptian press that it said were faked pictures of American soldiers sexually abusing female prisoners in Iraq.

But editors of two of the three publications involved said Wednesday they saw no grounds for a retraction. The editor-in-chief of the third publication, Al-Wafd, was not available.

"We have done a thorough investigation of the origin of these photos and have conclusive evidence that they originated on a pornographic Web site," the embassy said in a statement. "They are clearly staged photos, done by actors, as the site itself states."

"Their publication needlessly inflames an already heated atmosphere," the statement added, referring to Arab outrage over the revelation last weekend that U.S. soldiers had sexually humiliated male prisoners in Iraq. The U.S. television network CBS broadcast photographs of the abuse at Abu Ghraib prison, just west of Baghdad.

U.S. authorities have condemned the soldiers' actions and promised to bring them to justice.

The editor of the Egyptian weekly Al-Osboa, Mustafa Bakri, dismissed the U.S. Embassy's complaint. His newspaper published at least one photograph of a man, purportedly an American soldier, taking sexual advantage of a woman as one of a series run across three pages on May 3.

"We have published, maybe, one picture from the Internet, which was one of several pictures published by the media," Bakri told The Associated Press. "The kind of pictures on CBS made us believe that any other picture is authentic.

"Now the U.S. Embassy is speaking about pictures that were published only on the Internet. OK, let us agree on what CBS published, aren't they enough?"

The editor of Al-Mussawar, Makram Mohammed Ahmed, said he was not aware of the U.S. Embassy complaint. This week, his magazine published a picture of a partially naked woman with parts of her body blacked out.

Ahmed said he would not rule out that fake pictures were circulating.

And why are the Egyptians so reluctant to acknowledge this and do anything about it?

For some reason that at this point is entirely unclear, but possibly simply reflects a kind of Washington inertia, American taxpayers continue to supply to Egypt $2 billion a year. This is money not only ill spent, but precisely the reverse of what should be occurring. That money insures several things: 1) that those in control in Egypt can skim much of that off to keep their lavish lives, their Mena Island retreats, their trips abroad and 2) those who hate the regime will continue to blame the Americans for helping to support it and 3) the military aid from the United States has only one real use -- against Israel, a country with which, officially, Egypt has made peace 4) it rewards Egypt when Egypt should be punished for not having fulfilled a single one of its solemn commitments under the Camp David Accords, such as that to encourage an end to hostile propaganda against Israel 5) Egypt finds that it can continue to be a world center of anti-Americanism of the most violent kind, and of antisemitism, and not suffer any consequences.

Egypt is as much a threat, in the campaign against Jihad, as Syria, Iraq, or Iran. All military and economic aid should be cut off. Indeed, the only reason for such aid seems to be some kind of sentimental attachment to the dim memory (dimmest of all in Egypt, where he is ignored and despised) of Anwar Sadat -- you know, as if he left a little note, just before being assassinated, that read: "In lieu of flowers, please send $2 billion a year to my successors." This is nonsense. Egypt is not run by Anwar Sadat; it has never lived up to its obligations. It is as stupid to keep calling it an "American ally" as it was, during the Cold War, to pretend that while Suslov may have been "bad," there were reformers such as "Bulgarin" and "Malenkov" -- or the Chinese version, which depicted Chou En-Lai as somehow our "secret friend" because he had elegant manners, tapered fingers, and a cigarette holder (as compared to dumpy, dimpled Chairman Mao).

The United States Congress should at once begin to investigate the real nature of Egypt's regime, the reason it continues to get military aid (aid which, like the military equipment of Syria, Iraq, or Saudi Arabia, can always fall into the hands of people who are even worse -- if such is possible -- than those who are supposedly in control). If those making policy not only had the reputation for being calculating and hard-headed, they would ensure that Egypt's aid were cut off, and that to the extent possible, no Muslim country would be supplied with anything more than jeeps and rifles. Anything else is ultimiately a threat to the Infidels. (Similarly, Muslims should not be taught flying anywhere in the Infidel world).

Cut off aid to Egypt -- over this outrage of the faked photographs, and over a thousand other outrages. It is a despicable regime; that Mubarak is solemnly "consulted" by our government, and that a few days after visiting the White House last time, he announced in Paris that the "Arabs all hate America," (is he an Arab? does he hate America?), secure in the belief that the story would not get any play in naive, generous, constantly-taken-advantage-of America. Enough with Egypt. Let the Egyptians see for themselves how their Islamic society fares without the artificial life support system provided by American aid -- and of course, by tourism , which can only diminish as the Muslim attacks on Westerners puts off-limits to the world's travellers all of the Muslim world. Eventually, the recogntition of their own failures will cause a local Ataturk to arise; in the meantime, why should Infidels support Muslims when a world-wide Jihad (with various local expressions of it) is obviously underway?

When a mere $30 million of the $2 billion in annual aid was threatened unless Saad Eddin Ibrahim was given a "fairer" trial, Egypt quickly snapped to. Time not to threaten any longer, but to cut, cut, relentlessly cut the aid to this despicable regime and its hostile, hysterical people, whipped up by its press propaganda that must be seen to be believed.

If u like we can talk about your view points like adults and exchange view points, I am an Egyptian living abroad and was offended by your article but I still think u have the right to express your view point, only I would like to remind u that Muslims do not hate the west, some of them do and there r reasons which lead to this hate and misunderstanding, one of these factors is people like u expressing their hate to Muslims without examine the reasons of the terror we now live in.

I offer u my friendship and would be honoured if u start a discussion with me, who knows maybe we reach a peace, unlike what is happening now in our world.

The "reasons of the terror we now live in" are quite clear to those who take the time to see them.

A significant number of Muslims have taken it as their mission to forcibly convert the rest of humanity to their version of Islam.

Are they a majority of Muslims? Of course not.

But the time is quickly approaching when the rest of the Islamic world will pay for their actions, if it does nothing to restrain them.

That's not a threat. It's a simple statement of fact.

You are absolutely correct, I am a future marine infantryman and I think its absurd that we continue to have a two faced approach to these countries that support terror, they need to be dealt with once and for all

Hugh is right. Our president said "you are either with us or with the terrorists." Egypt is and has been with the terrorists. Just read the anti American tantrums in their government controlled press.

Egyptians are the masters of arabic propaganda.
They are the most subtle exponents of the art.
they have always been since the days of nasser and al Husseini the grand mufti.
there is a no holds barred policy in news reporting . That is the Egyptian way.
Reoprting untruths has always been good for business and the Egyptians are the best business men in the ME.
Is that not right Mr Al FAYED ?
Always count your fingers after business,

John,
I am very happy about you joining the infantry, let me tell you this, what you've said is abolutely true, this issue needs to be dealt with decisively and at once.
It is high time, the demacation line is drawn. You cannot be killing us(or those having the same idea with us) or support those killing us and still pretend to be the friend. It is not possible for supporters of terrorism to be friends of anti-terrorism at the same time.
Egypt and other countries should either support anti-terrorisms totally or don't.
God bless America and other countries that are fighting for the freedom from oppression.

Lets recount...

The "news" of the suspected prison abuse broke January 2004 with an announcment by the coalition...

No reporting of any consequence by the major news organizations...

4 months later Sensational pictures surface as a result of the internal investigation the military is conducting and BAM! The elite leftist media is on the case!! Why?

Because it became morally outraged at the abuses?

NO...

Because it saw the potential power of the sensational pictures to boost ratings...and/or it saw a chance to turn the war on terror into an election issue once again...

YES...

Was this a crime? Hmmm...I think YES and Mr. Berg and his family might agree...Even if the first broadcast could fall under the "we did not know what effect they would have" category, subsequent showings do not...

As with the ACLU funding details, I would be interested in seeing who really owns NBC, ABC and CBS...Or as I see them....at best "The ratings whores" and at worst the "American arm of all muslim terrorists organizations"...

Who knows, we might wake up some day to hear the Islamic Call to Pray broadcast across America...You know, as a means of promoting understanding between cultures. HA!
