Saudi Forces Storm Complex After Rampage

More trouble in Saudi Arabia:

DAMMAM, Saudi Arabia (AP) - Saudi security forces stormed an expatriate residential complex Saturday seeking gunmen who had taken hostages after a shooting rampage on two compounds housing oil company offices, killing at least six people - including a 10-year-old boy.

At least one American and two other Westerners were among those killed in the second deadly attack on oil industry targets in the Saudi kingdom this month. There were reports the death toll could be as high as 15.

Saudi forces fired shots inside the residential complex in the eastern city of Khobar, officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity. They gave no further details.

Earlier, a police officer inside the housing compound told The Associated Press that all hostages had been released and negotiations were under way.

And here's an Update from AP: Saudi Forces Hunt Militants After Attack. Islamic militants, no less. Who'd have guessed?

And also a list of recent attacks in Saudi Arabia.

Just a thought: some (most) of these attacks in SA are by the very people who are funded by the Saudi princes (and they certainly deserve to have their own throwing it back in their faces).

But: We do I get the feeling someone Else is behind these attacks on (foreign) oil company personnel? Almost as tho they were intended to drive out anyone not Saudi. Once there are no foreigners left working in the (oversight) infrastructure...

War is deception. Gary has made a very good point. The Saudis can blame the bombings on "terrorists," and get rid of the foreigners at the same time. They can "seem" to be perterbed and perplexed by the attacks, acting like victims, for the purpose of looking good to the West and to the world of Islam, a perfect kitman tactic.

It would be interesting to know whether the oil
employees are permitted to carry firearms if they
wish.

Posted by: anonymous coward at May 29, 2004 11:17 AM

This happened down the street from MY compound. The story also doesn't mention a group of three semi-random street killings elsewhere.

epg, I have to disagree here. The Saudi rulers and upper class - the major business owners - know that foreign workers are much more productive than Saudis and necessary to keep the national infrastructure running. Companies like ARAMCO and SABIC are cash cows that must be kept alive and healthy. And as a group, Saudis are just not very good veterinarians.

This is the Jihadists simply fulfilling another one of Muhammeds 'peaceful-self-defence-only' commands;

Hadith by Bukhari,
Volume 4, Book 53, Number 393:
Narrated Said bin Jubair:

"Then the Prophet ordered them to do three things saying, 'Turn out all the pagans from the Arabian Peninsula,"

Saudi Arabia is the Dr. Frankenstein of this mess. They created a monster, and the monster has turned on them. They'll soon be asking for our help, and we should be soon getting a sweet deal on oil.

Posted by: D.C. Watson at May 29, 2004 12:14 PM

dc watson , i agree with you on saudi arabia.

however, the american coddling of saudi arabia
in exchange for oil is a part of the problem.

Instead of asking for a sweet deal on oil,
US should ask for strict and measurable reforms like banning Sharia
and polygamy (and not just make general statements of reforms). Also US should ask the saudis to stop funding madrassas in Pakistan. If the US does not even start to use its leverage for anything other than oil, there is no point in blaming Saudi Arabia.

Better yet, Naresh- make them Stop funding muslim (read: anti-US) studies in US colleges. They want to give us money? Fine. How about AIDS research?

Posted by: Gary at May 29, 2004 12:55 PM

I think that we have to be more careful with these government and this people, the wahabbism is from there and is a clock bomb, and I think that USA and other westerner countries must break these relations with this country and looking for petroleum of other countries.

Posted by: Franze at May 29, 2004 7:12 PM

gary, i agree with you. Saudi money goes to spread a world view that is very narrow and full of hatred. I wonder what 'moderate' muslims feel when jihadis attack a fellow muslim country.

Posted by: naresh c. at May 29, 2004 9:15 PM

5:14 AM - local Saudi time. At this moment, we still have "activity" - sounds of helicpters and gunfire - around us. I guess negotiations fell through.

CNN confirms. Or I am confirming CNN. Whichever.

anonymous coward - No. Not even air rifles. Apparently the Saudi authorities are afraid the foreign workers may shoot Saudi citizens.

How many more days do we have left, I wonder?

Posted by: North American at May 29, 2004 10:56 PM

Jay is right, Saudi Arabia would fall apart without the foreign workers. Saudis consider themselves too good to work; they must concentrate on being "good muslims." The foreign workers do most all of the work that gets done there, not just in the oil business. And of course, the exalted, superior muslims are used to having slaves to do the manual labor. They might not like having infidels on their holy sand, but the country would disentegrate without them.

Religion of peace on a rampage? But saudi is the islamic paradise, home of the Big Black Rock. I guess the natives get restless if they don't get to prove their love for allah by going on a shooting rampage...

Mahmoud, basil, Reza:

allah is evil. ilsam sucks. you will all die. besides we know who you are and where you live. ilsam will die as all moslems. Jesus is not a moslem. Adam and Eve were never muslim. Give it up. kill thy self or convert. hell awaits you pigs. Death to my all enemies; Freedom to all the righteous. Urban II.

The progressive world can only get ride of these types of islamic savagery by counter-attack those wealthy businessmen, intellectuals and aides by inflicting harms on them and their dear ones through well coordinated secret assasinations and cause massive financial losses. Only then they will understand the price of spreading terror. We the scientifically civilised people also have nothing to lose except the rational instinct. So, can't we be the counter-suicide killers? If there is any eternal being then it must be rational. Then we must be rewarded for our sacrifices.

Anyone found any outrage against these cruel murders in the Arab Press? By the reaction to Abu Ghraib they seem very concerned about human rights and dignity.
