Iran says nuclear freeze won't last long

Surprised? From Reuters, with thanks to JS:

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran has reiterated it is only prepared to freeze its uranium enrichment activities for a few months and will not, as the EU and Washington want, permanently mothball facilities which could make atomic bombs.

The comments, made by Iran's chief nuclear negotiator on Tuesday, were a further blow to European Union efforts to persuade Tehran to scrap enrichment for good and were likely to fuel U.S. concerns that Iran secretly plans to produce nuclear weapons....

Rohani said the world had nothing to fear from Iran's nuclear facilities. "If we had wanted to make a nuclear bomb we would have made one in the last 20 years," he said.

How long will the EU leadership continue down the road of Appeasement?
As for Iran claiming they could have had the bomb years ago- does anyone really think Israel would have stood for that? They would have taken out Saddam's facility and kept right on flying into Iran to deal with theirs.
And the mullahs know they could not have done a thing to stop Israel.

When it comes to Iran, its radical iconoclast of Mullahs cannot be trusted by the western world; a lifting of a freeze on their nulear program can be defined as a melt down in Iran for the rest of us.

Shmuel Rosner in today's Ha'aretz has written a thoughtful commentary, "Euther war or the Bomb," on the dangerous Hobson's choices facing Israel and the US in tackling the reality of Iranian development of a nuclear arsenal. His opening metaphor of crab walking by diplomats borrowed from TR's Secretary of State, John Hay is apt given recent effortrs by the Euros and the IAEA to get Iran to stop key plutonium enrichment, a prelude to making actual boimbs, which many experts believe is imminent.

The reference to a new book by former CIA analyst Ken Pollack-a leading proponent of the Irag incursion, now gunshy on Iran , and the Atlantic Magazine war Game scenarios is fascinating.

But the bottom line is, diplomacy with the Ayatollahs is next to useless given their singular objective of killing Jews and Israelis by whatever means and through whatever surrogates they have available to them, whether Hezbolleh backed Islamiist terrorists in both South Lebanon and Gaza, sending arms shipments like the infamous Karine A vessel caught by Israel on its way to the late Arafat's Fatah militias or paying off Argies to blow up both the Israeli embassy and the AMIA Jewish community buiulding in Buenos Aires in 1992 and 1994. And for Amercians, let us not forget the truck bombing that killed 283 Marines in beirut in 1983.

So, as Rosner says there are no good choices when it comes to US policy on Iran and its nuclear weapons development program. But Israel, unlike Ken Pollack and the Atlantic Monthly war games participants, save David Kay the former UN weapons inspector has to face the reality of preparing an effective military option to deal with the nuclear threat from Iran. That's why the Arrow anti-missile program continues, but it's also the reason why the four long range subs in the Israeli navy are on permanent rotation on station off the Straits of Hormuz equipped with both nuclrear and non-nuclear Tomahawk type missiles for launch against key Iranian nucelar weapons development targets.

So let the Euro and IAEA diplomats and inspectors do their crabwalk. Israel must prepare for the ultimate reality of a possible military solution, with or without the plausible denial of the US.

Annan 'very Disappointed' His Son Received Payments From Firm With an Oil-for-Food Contract

By Edith M. Lederer Associated Press Writer
Published: Nov 29, 2004
UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Monday he was "very disappointed and surprised" that his son had continued to receive payments until this February from a firm that had a contract with Iraq's oil-for-food program, the subject of numerous corruption investigations.
Annan told reporters that he had been working on the understanding that payments to his son, Kojo Annan, from the Swiss-based firm Cotecna Inspection S.A. stopped in 1998 "and I had not expected that the relationship continued."
But on Friday, U.N. spokesman Fred Eckhard said Kojo Annan's lawyer had informed the independent panel appointed by the secretary-general to investigate allegations of corruption in the oil-for-food program that the younger Annan continued to receive monthly payments through February 2004.
The disclosure was the latest embarrassment for Annan and the United Nations over the humanitarian program which was instituted in December 1996 to help Iraqis cope with sanctions imposed after Saddam Hussein's 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
Annan on Monday stressed that his son was an independent businessman "and I don't get involved with his activities and he doesn't get involved in mine."
Annan has said his son joined Cotecna at the age of 22 as a trainee in Geneva before he became secretary-general and worked in West Africa. The firm was hired by the United Nations on Dec. 31, 1998 to authenticate that food, medicine and other goods entering Iraq corresponded to a list of goods approved for import.
In a statement in April, Cotecna said Kojo Annan's full-time employment - which focused entirely on its activities in Nigeria and Ghana and had nothing to do with the oil-for-food program - began in 1995 and ended in December 1997 after which he was retained as a consultant until early 1999. It did not mention any further payments.
The United Nations previously said Kojo Annan stopped receiving monthly payments from Cotecna at the end of 1999. But Eckhard said Friday he continued to be paid because he had an open-ended no-compete contract which allows an employee who leaves a company to receive money to ensure he won't set up a competing company.
"There is nothing illegal in this," Eckhard said. Also, continuing investigations by the U.S. Congress and the United Nations have not shown any wrongdoing by Cotecna.
Cotecna spokeswoman Ginny Wolfe said Kojo Annan was paid $2,500-a-month "to prevent him from working for any of their competitors in Africa" which she described as a very competitive market.
"Kojo Annan's sole responsibilities were in Africa," she said. "He had nothing to do with any U.N. discussions and work."
U.S. Ambassador John Danforth discussed the oil-for-food investigations with the secretary-general on Monday and was asked afterward whether the United States still has confidence in Annan.
"I don't think the U.S. government rushes to judgment until all the facts are in," he said, urging that the investigation be exhaustive and reveal all the facts to avoid any charges of a cover-up.
Five U.S. congressional panels have been pressing the independent inquiry headed by former U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker to hand over internal U.N. documents for their own oil-for-food probes. But Volcker told the Senate that his panel won't hand over documents until its investigative reports are issued starting in January.
Danforth said "everything should be handed over to the congressional committees ... as quickly as possible."
The oil-for-food program allowed Saddam's regime to sell unlimited quantities of oil provided the money went primarily to buy humanitarian goods and pay reparations to victims of the 1991 Gulf War.
Annan reiterated that he has "no involvement with granting of contracts, either on this Cotecna one or others."
But the secretary-general said he understood "the perception problem for the U.N., or the perception of conflict of interests and wrongdoing."
Eckhard said both Cotecna and Kojo Annan's lawyers had informed the United Nations that they have turned over information to the independent inquiry headed by Volcker.
"To the extent that there's an allegation of the awarding of this contract and the secretary-general's son, leave that to Volcker to investigate," Eckhard said. "We feel there is not. We have looked into it and we can find no evidence, but it's not for us to judge now, it's for Mr. Volcker to judge."
Annan told reporters Monday he spoke to his son after learning that he had been paid through February, "but I really don't want to get into this."
Asked whether he was disappointed and angry with his son for taking the money and not disclosing it, Annan replied: "Naturally I was very disappointed and surprised, yes."

Aha. I somehow see endgame approaching.

Most self-haters like the jiahdis in general, at least the iranian mullahs in particular, seem to harbor a death wish. Looks as if Santa may just fulfill theirs by x'mas '05.

Too much is at stake in Tel Aviv and Washington to ignore this developemnt. Occupying Iran is outta question but a picer strike at its production facilites oughtta do the trick.

Besides, what better way than 'direct action' to gently persuade syria to give up its own and Saddam's WMD? How better to let the French and German dorks know they have ceased to have a say in the security perceptions of the US and Israel? And teh turks to understand you don't keep on insulting the sole superpower w/o consequence. And maybe let the Saudis know we're keeping an eye on them....

think this story doesn't work cause the Marines Came Back to kill the Spiders??

http://www.iwpr.net/index.pl?archive/irq/irq_65_3_eng.txt

Fallujah Saved by "Divine Intervention"
Residents say God sent spiders, ghost riders and other creatures to join their fight against American troops.
By Awadh al-Taie in Baghdad (ICR No. 65, 01-Jun-04)
An image hangs on the walls of mosques in Fallujah that seems to show United States soldiers with foot-long spiders dangling off them.
Some people describe the image as merely two camel spiders joined together. But many Fallujans say the picture shows a giant spider sent by God to attack US troops in the battle for their town in April.
"The soldier says that it runs fast - about 40 kilometres per hour. It is poisonous and it makes a screaming sound," said a poster in the mosque, entitled "Miracle of God in Fallujah".
Although no Fallujans interviewed by IWPR claimed to have seen the beasts, many had heard tales about them.
"A spider emerged from the railway tracks near the Golan neighbourhood," said Abid Bin Allawi Ubeid, 32, a public servant in Fallujah's electricity department. "It killed 60 Marines."
The heavenly arachnid is just one of several supernatural entities, including white-robed horsemen and doves, said to have taken up the fight against US forces.
Ubeid said he had heard of white doves which hovered over Marine snipers and gave away their positions, as well as phantom white-robed knights on white horses who attacked the American troops.
One insurgent, who refused to give his name, claimed to have experienced divine intervention during the fighting.
Although he fired 150 rounds from his PKS machinegun at two Apache attack helicopters from a hilltop near al-Thirthar lake, the fighter said he was protected from being spotted. "It was a veil made by Almighty God," he said.
The insurgent even credits divine intervention for the US decision not to press its attack on the city, "God sent these creatures to support us. I can't imagine that the Coalition forces would have been unable to deal with a city like Fallujah, especially when you see their equipment and numbers," he said.
Local religious leaders support such claims, too.
"Such things can be, because God has soldiers on earth and in the sky," said Sheikh Jamal Shaker, the imam or leader of a local mosque.
Shaker himself said he was aware of at least one miracle in which the bodies of fallen mujahidin or fighters did not decay, but instead "smelled of musk".

"Rohani said the world had nothing to fear..."

"Adherents of militant Islam account for some 15-20 percent of the Muslim world, according to Daniel Pipes, an expert on the subject. This means that more than 150 million people are part of the problem. To make matters worse, they hide among the moderates. They don't wear uniforms and rarely identify themselves."

3 Yemenis sue NASA for trespassing on Mars
They say they inherited it 3,000 years ago
July 24, 1997
Web posted at: 10:44 p.m. EDT (0244 GMT)
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- No one expects to lose much sleep over it but, for the record, NASA has been sued by three men from Yemen for invading Mars.
The three say they own the red planet, and claim they have documents to prove it.
"We inherited the planet from our ancestors 3,000 years ago," they told the weekly Arabic-language newspaper Al-Thawri, which published the report Thursday.
Adam Ismail, Mustafa Khalil and Abdullah al-Umari filed the lawsuit in San'a, Yemen, and presented documents to the country's prosecutor general which they say proves their claim. There was no word on whether they had paid the appropriate inheritance taxes.
The claim is prompted, apparently, by the exploration of Mars by NASA's Pathfinder spacecraft and Sojourner rover, which have been sending back photos and data for analysis since early July.
"Sojourner and Pathfinder, which are owned by the United States government, landed on Mars and began exploring it without informing us or seeking our approval," the men charge.
They demand the immediate suspension of all operations on Mars until a court delivers a verdict. They also ask that NASA refrain from disclosing any information pertaining to Mars' atmosphere, surface or gravity before receiving approval from them, or until a verdict is reached.
'It's a ridiculous claim'
"It's a ridiculous claim," NASA news chief Brian Welch told CNN Thursday after smothering a chuckle. "Mars is a planet out in the solar system that is the property of all humanity, not two or three guys in Yemen."
Richard Cook, the Pathfinder mission manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, agreed. "It's everybody's," he said. "Mars is for the whole world to explore and to understand."
Welch says a 1967 international treaty holds that everything in the solar system, except Earth itself, is the property of everyone in the world and no one country.
"Just because we land on Mars first doesn't mean the United States owns it," he said.
Welch said he thought the issue could get more serious in the future "when people actually are going to these places and the resources found have some value. ... More complicated issues will have to be resolved between countries, or between companies."
Taking the opportunity to clear the air on another galactic real estate matter, Welch said he knew of no plans to take legal action against a man who has been selling deeds to property on the moon.
Welch said the deeds are as worthless as the Yemenis' claims. "That's why they invented the phrase 'Caveat emptor' [Let the buyer beware]," he said.

DixieHammer:

Unfortunately, Israel does suffer from PC and always has. As historian Beny Morris observed, had the founders of the State really engaged in the ethnic cleansing they stand accuse of, they would be experiencing much more peaceful times today. Instead, they tried to do as little harm as possible.

While few Israelis are quite as gonzo as Mordechai Vanunu, who rationalized his breach of confidentiality as a nuke technician by saying he should have been eliminated as an employee via psych testing, there is still a large element of Israeli society that wants so badly to show they are the most decent and fair-minded, that they blind themselves to the deceit and duplicity of the Palistinianists and demand the highest standards of conduct of themselves and their leaders.

Why? Unlike their Muslim neighbours, most Israelis are very much small "l" liberals who cannot comprehend the extreme anti-liberalism of the totalitarian minded Muslims. And, also, in stark contrast to totalitarian minded Muslims, without a doubt, they suffer guilt over any true injustices done to establish and preserve the State of Israel.

Yes, there was a largish and ancient Jewish community in Yemen (and a few other Gulf states like Aden) up until the early 1950s, when they all fled to Israel. Some of them though, were probably evicted from the Hejaz (Saudi Arabia) a few centuries earlier, but otherwise it was a very ancient community.

A country with an excess of oil and natural gas need nuclear power?

Oh, they'll get nuclear power, but not in the form they expect.

Unless their dissidents want to be anything but a pulverized bone fragment in a thousand square mile plain of vitreous residue, faintly radioactive after a hundred year.

Let's stop pussyfooting and tell them:

You don't get nuclear weapons.
You're not trustworthy.
We will be force to atomize you if you try.

Peanut Carter! He is the one who allowed the Islamic Revolution in Iran!
By declining to help the Shah and with his "no fly will get's hurt on my watch" attitude the Ayatollahs took charge.
He could have declared war on Iran when they occupied the
US embassy 25 years ago, or better: Knowing what we know NOW it would have been better to send a roll commando to France and have Khomeini assassinated right then and there.

But this Bible belt comedian helplessly watched the mullahs take power and I think for him the coin never dropped?! I don't think he ever understood what a fool he was to let that happen...
