Don't you think the West will have enough here very soon and take drastic and unprecedented action that will make the invasion of Iraq look like it was just a spark that started a firestorm?

My hope is that the Islamists have chosen the wrong moment in time to make such open war on western civilization. Perhaps facing this darkness now, during this age of communication, will cause more people to realize the inherit dangers of belief systems that require you to abandon reason for blind obedience. (hadith 2.460) So if you do everything for allah (pray 5 times a day, etc.) this cannot keep someone out of hell if they get pee on themselves.

As folks already know, I am not a voice for religious apologetics, but the idea of offering a positive way for Muslims to reject some of the fundamental tenents of Islam, e.g. that Mohammad was a perfect man or the Qur'an is a perfect revelation from God, and some sustain some form of religious identity, is important, I think.

If one does away with Islamic, collectivist mentality and admits that Mohammad was a flawed human being, who encouraged brutality and immoral behavior in many ways (e.g. pedophilia, the oppression and abuse of women, the dehumanization of people who rejected 'him' as a Messenger from God, among other things) one need not reject the complete message of the Qur'an, which acknowledges the legitimacy of the Christian and Jewish religious traditions (in a skewed way, of course); set aside Mohammad, and Allah still exists. Religious teaching still exists, and in traditions that reject literalism, encourage individual moral conscience, and educated, reflective interpretation of the ways in which Allah attempt to intervene in human history; these traditions also now predominately reject divine command, the idea that actions are good and bad because God commands and forbids. (This is the basis of the endless commentary in the hadiths on the 'sayings and deeds' of the Prophet. If one accepts that the only method of determining right from wrong is divine command then without divine guidance one is utterly lost. So, what did the Prophet say? What did the Prophet do? Only he knows the will of Allah. These become questions of enormous importanace. Note the lack of such commentary in the Christian tradition. "What did Jesus say exactly? What did he do exactly?" Why? Because Jesus was a rabbi, a teacher, an interpreter, a teller of stories and moral lessons. I think that Naseem has not said anything untrue here in this thread. In fact, I think she has said exactly the truth as she sees it and as it certainly appears, however unpleasant to us.

Paradoxically, the sense of confidence Naseem exudes about the future of Islam in the West is also marked by signs in her posts of subtle warnings, that indicate a certain degree of honesty and even grudging support for our concerns.

Some might consider engaging Naseem in the spirit of reciprocial grudging respect and goodwill which is necessary to gain perspective on what clearly is the greatest challenge facing us, shaping the 21th century.

We must restrain from induldging in the understandable expressions of displeasure that marks the frustration we all certainly feel and listen to what it is someone is actually saying, not how it sounds or comes across.

What is interesting to note about Naseem's comment about all the children memorizing the Qur'an is that the Qur'an is not the only thing these kids are memorizing. They're also memorizing the anti-American hatred they're being taught by their teachers in school. There's a Discovery-Times Channel documentary called "Children of Terror" which highlights the fanaticism that is being instilled into children in Naseem's country. If you get a chance to watch it don't miss it - these little kids are the jihadists our children and grandchildren will be fighting in the future...

I really am intrigued by the commentary I see coming out about honor killings. Its a practice that I abhor and not just because of its practice but also the hypocrisy of those who try to justify it, along with FGM, by saying it is Islamic when it is clearly not. The practice predated islam and is practiced by a minority of Arab Christians to this day. I do think it is important to note that even among Arab countries, Jordanian culture, despite all the facades of modernism is deeply traditional.

I make a distinction between traditionalism and conservatism notably being that traditionalists often make excuses for current practices while conservatives (I'm not referring to American conservatives/Republican party) would tend to look for a balance that upholds core values. An example of the middle east would be Ayatollah Sistani as a conservative given his disdain for the mullahs in Iran and his support of the Shia school of thought that believes ayatollahs are to act as "guides, not masters" of the flock.

It's interesting though how honor killings are manifested though. In Jordan they are seen as a way of preserving the "honor of the tribe". (No, i am not condoning the practice, nor do my Jordanian friends). In Bosnia's Serb community it is considered an honor killing to kill a Serb daughter or sister who may have slept wtih a Croat or a Bosnian Muslim (and vice versa).

If I had to rank the highest support for honor killings in the arab world it would likely be Saudia Arabia, Yemen, and Jordan.

There is one bright spot on the horizon, its semi ironic but consider it one of the advantages of technology that could help end honor killings. With so many women now going to doctors to have artificial hymens so as to pass themselves off as still being a virgin it's meaning fewer families are demanding "virginity tests" for prospective brides to marry their sons. There's even been some cartoons in arab papers in Cairo and Amman lately mocking virginity as a basis for a successful marriage in the face of "serial re-virginizers".

What I dont think helps though is when American woman begin advocating on behalf of Arab women when it comes to issues like honor killings, FGM, and so on. Not because these issues arent worthy of advocacy but because of the cause and effect. Namely that it is far more important that we (Americans, feminists, conservatives, and liberals, and other persons of conscience) help empower women in the region to speak out for themselves. Otherwise we risk creating a backlash that helps empowers the extremists within the society. I realize I will probably get a lot of flak for saying this but realize I am speaking from a strategic viewpoint and have had some experience given that I worked on womens issues while serving with the US Army in Iraq ( www.omarmasry.net ).

One way towards empowerment is to first work through creating economic empowerment and a great vehicle for doing so is micro-development projects such as Grameen Bank. They make small loans to womens groups who then start small businesses and are able to lift themselves out of poverty. Not only is it a really effective form of foriegn aid that isnt stolen by corrupt elites and crooked American and European businessmen (ahem, Marc Rich of the oil for food scandal, and the French when they arent busy with their defacto african colonies), but it is done in a way that gives people a handup, NOT a handout. When people gain skills and access to empower themselves economically it gives them inner strengt to take on the Goliath of political and social reform.

Want to take on islamic fundamentalism, great. But don't do it in a way where the silent majority feel like they are being held hostage between the seemingly unattainable lure of Westernization and the puritanical (albeit hypocritical) oversimplification of religious and cultural fundamentalism. Every time "armchair generals" like Ann Coulter and Michelle Malkin espouse their rhetoric its a source of embarassment for our diplomats (guys in suits and special forces) and Americans working towards reform overseas. Does that mean that we should accomodate injustice though? Not at all, it means working in a manner thats shrewd. It means ticking off fundamentalists by showing you know more about the heart and soul of the peoples they try to hijack by pointing out the hypocrisy of their views especially when they contradict the very spirit of the faith they aim to protect. I'll write more about this later but I'm interested in your feedback so far.

Naseem, if you ask the Taliban or Saddam's mighty Republican Guard, they'll tell you they had their asses handed to them by our Armed Forces and not one nuclear device was ever utilized.

There are approximately 3 million Muslims in the United States, not 6 million. There are more than 4 million members in the National Rifle Association alone, with 80 million gun owners in the country.

What on earth do you think Muslims in our "own backyard" are going to do? Jihad cannot be carried out in lifeless corpses, know what I mean?

You should consider another approach, this one isn't working. However, keep talking. You'll eventually learn that your intellect isn't as elevated as you'd like to believe.

People cannot imagine how the use of robots will revolutionize warfare. Who will be able to produce robots? China, Japan, and the US. Part of the sqeamishness of the West in warfare is the loss of human beings, our soldiers, in regard to waging war. If you are using robots to kill the enemy, then it becomes much easier for civilized societies to take risks to destroy every last vestige of the enemy. It will be better than using Daisy Cutters on the Taliban.
If you need the whole population killed without using nukes, then just change the robots' programming to kill everything in that area.

Religious wars last decades. This one will be long as it will take the civilized, (i.e. non-Muslim) part of the world a long time to really grasp what is at stake.

Islam is Naziism with Allah. If Naziism were a religious ideology, we would have had to kill most of the Germans to get them to abandon their "god."

In a poll in the Netherlands (done by the programma Nova) there were some real 'interesting' results. Around 30% of muslims in the Netherlands want to launch the SHARIA in the Netherlands. Also a third of the muslims say they certainly do not want the sharia in the Netherlands. In total 51% of the muslims want an islamic party to start in the Netherlands.

Well, that are frightening results in a poll that are really worth looking at.

Your post about rote memorization reminded me of an episode of the original Star Trek TV series back in the 60's. Two peoples were at endless war with each other, one of these peoples being the "Comms" (you must know of the politics and propaganda of that era for this to make sense).

When Capt. Kirk came into contact with the other people he found they couldn't remember why they were fighting or what they were even fighting for, except that these people had an icon to which they recited a mantra, learned by rote memorization. The problem with such rote memorization and recitation that Kirk saw was that the words of this mantra all ran into each other, such that their sounds and, more importantly, their meaning, became lost in a blur of murmuring sounds. Kirk solved the problem (over objections of Spock and McCoy that he may be violating the prime directive not to influence the course of history of any intelligent species) by teaching these people to slowly recite the words of the mantra and comprehend the meaning of each and every one of its words.

For those unfamiliar with this episode, the icon was an old tattered U.S.A. flag and the mantra the Declaration of Independence.

i spend a lot of time trying to not judge anyone. some times it's a loosing battle. you just have to keep trying. any religious leader [and i do mean any] who preachs the destruction of any group is unfit to present himself as a holy person. god should have to depend on the actions of man? i guess that we have two choices - cower like the sniveling dogs or standing up. i personally like a world rich in variety and i wish that the crazies in our cultures can be muzzled. what will be - will be. the real sinners are those who raise young children in a system that makes them no more than farm raised trout - released into the streams of life to be hunted and killed.

You're just parroting moral relativism wrapped up in religious garb. We are compelled to make moral judgements. We can't decide who will be sent to hell or who will be sent to heaven, if such places did exist. That's what humans cannot judge, although we do have good ideas where some people will go. : D

I'm not seeing the logic in your statements. It seems like there should be at least 3 sentences between each of your sentences explaining how each of these sentences relate to each other.

The Comms/Yangs episode smacked of moral relativism to me. Just like Hollyweird, even at that early time. I think that Doctor Suess had better morality lessons than anything you would find on Star Trek. The new series are just unwatchable. Television is a trash medium.

the point of my post was not about the moral relativism of that particular episode, it was presented as a parable to Naseem's post about the rote memorization of the koran by kids whose vocabulary is probably insufficient to even comprehend the meaning of what they are memorizing. I added the moral relativism part at the end just to refresh any memories out there who may have watched those original episodes.

Note that the Yangs were reciting their mantra as if it were a prayer, an automatic, drone like recitation. No meanining in that at all, much like the way many prayers, irrespective of the faith followed, are recited. The manner in which the Yangs repeated their mantra is probably the same way those kids would recite the koran back, if asked to do so, muttering the words with no meaning attached.

Another point to Naseem, those kids memorizing the koran, are they memorizing it in their native non-arabic language or in arabic which they might not even understand a single word of. When I was a little kid, I could recite the entire Roman Catholic mass in Latin, and not understand a single word of what I was saying (Pater noster, qui est in caelis, sanctificatur nomen tuum...). I could repeat by rote memorization an entire religious service in a language I could not even form a simple sentence in, so what?

Even with side-to-side Latin and English versions avaialbe to me at that time, anybody who is multilingual will know there is not a one to one correspondence between words in each text due to linguistic differences in grammar and structure of a language (I speak three modern languages, English, German and Italian, can hack away at Spanish (Spanglish?)and two dead languages, Latin and Fortran). Later when I was studying Latin, the Vatican instructed parishes to recite the mass in their local language to remove the disconnect between the language of the parishioners and the language of the mass so that the faithful could once again understand the meaning of the ritual and service, and not be automatons going through meaningless motions muttering meaningless phrases.

It is apparent that we see the same disconnect in islam if prayers and the koran are only to be recited in arabic in the mosque irrespective of wherever that mosque is to be found. Do those muslims in attendance, especially the kids in Europe, East Asia and the Americas, even know what they are saying in those prayers and koran?
