State-Sponsored Blockbuster Hits Russia’s Movie Screens

A much-publicised and eagerly-awaited Russian blockbuster hits screens all over the country today. “Countdown,” or “Lichniy Nomer,” its original title, is an attempt to outdo the latest commercial success of “Night Watch,” doubling the budget and stocking up on authentic military planes, real Special Forces units, and overt backing from the government.

The movie begins with a confession: Russian FSB operative Smolin admits that the apartment bombings across Russia were not in fact carried out by Chechen terrorists, but by him and his colleagues. Then — ta-da! — we see that he is actually being forced to lie by a certain excommunicated oligarch named Pokrovsky, who has kidnapped Smolin’s daughter and staged a Chechen hostage takeover in a Moscow circus.

Pokrovsky’s cunning plan is to turn up in the circus and expertly negotiate his way back into the Russian political arena by freeing the hostages. But that’s not all! Simultaneously there is a global terrorist threat from an Arab group with the indistinct name “Ansar Allah” whose leader sports the archetypal beard and wants to get rid of all enemy presidents at once by bombing an anti-terrorist conference in Rome.

If you are already confused by the movie’s main plots, then brace yourself for the various technical details of this blockbuster (with an official budget of $7 million, 345 copies, and serious promotion on state television channels). The movie’s official website proudly announces that many of the impressive special effects were made using real military hardware: 8 helicopters, 2 Su-27 fighter jets, 4 Il-76 planes, one of which blew up on the landing strip, true to the script, 6 armored personnel carriers (APCs), and an aircraft carrier. 150 kilograms of explosives were detonated and real Special Forces agents had their kick at stardom by playing... Special Forces agents.

Other touching specifics include: the anchor from the government-owned First channel appears in the film when the Russian president speaks to the Russian people with an exclusive message pertaining to the global terrorist threat. Can you imagine Dan Rather starring in Die Hard for a minute?

Well, in Russia it can only mean one thing — the whole movie is sponsored, if not completely conceived, by the Russian authorities. And one of the movie’s consultants is the acting assistant head of the FSB Anisimov (the other one, to balance things out, is Richard Stolz, a retired assistant director with the CIA).

In one breathtaking scene a fleet of cars chases an APC on Leninsky Prospect. To film it, the movie’s makers had to block off the major thoroughfare (basically a high speed radial route that leads to the center of Moscow). As a Moscow resident whose windows are smack on Leninsky and give a great view of the 24-hour congestion horror below, I can assert that blocking it off probably requires authorization from the One, be it God or Putin.

Many of the film’s reviews seem more like tongue-in-cheek political commentaries. Well, actually, only the ones from the newspapers that are not under any state influence. Logically, the only current reviews that the movie’s official website links to are those that praise, from state-controlled “Rossiiskaia Gazeta” and “Parlamentskaia Gazeta,” which faithfully omit any insinuating remarks. Instead they talk about the movie’s professionalism, which is not inferior to that of Hollywood-type action flicks, and hope that Russian cinema is making a comeback, winning over fans and investors.

“We wanted to create a Russian hero,” says producer Sergei Gribkov. The main character of the movie, FSB major Smolin is reportedly based on a real person, Alexei Galkin, who was captured by the Chechens and miraculously survived the torture sessions, eventually fleeing and returning home with a collection of medals. Alexei Makarov, who plays Smolin says: “When the director asked me to act more emotively, I refused. He was asking me to be reflective, but I observed real Special Forces professionals, and I did not see any reflection there. They keep their eyes cold and on the target.”

The FSB’s aloof professionals are the movie’s heros: they save the world from impending catastrophy, partnering up with their international colleagues and finally receiving ardent praise from NATO Admiral Mallory, played by John Amos.

Maybe Makarov’s efforts to fathom the FSB poker face explain some of the critics’ clamor that Smolin is bland and uninteresting. Instead they commend the actor playing the resident Chechen “dandy” of the movie, Umar, who eventually realizes the treachery of Berezovs.. excuse me, Pokrovsky, and defends the children side by side with the Russian officer.

The press release reads: “The movie demonstrates that evil has no nationality, the importance of uniting people of all confessions in the fight against global terror.” Sounds innocent enough, but there are two catches. Firstly, if you are planning a Russian cinema comeback, at least have some decency not to use the latest human tragedies to pump up your script (the circus location is supposed to combine the “entertainment venue” aspect of the Nord Ost hostage crisis with the “menaced child” aspect of Beslan, I suppose). And secondly, if you want to whitewash the authorities, don’t let them actually star in your movie, and pick a more charismatic actor for the leading role

CGW, I liked the quotes from President Adams, but Shukri is right: the founding fathers didn't want a christian church-state. I know what Glenn Beck and the rest of the right-wing media machine of the Archaic Values League® has lied to you non-stop, but the fact is there is no reference to "Jesus," "Bible," "Yaweh," or "Jehovah" in the US Constitution or the Declaration of Independence. They don't even say "God" except the mention of "Nature's God" [Pan?] in the D of I.

Nice try though. Some of the founding fathers were somewhat religious but most of them were also Masons and didn't want a religious nation. Some of them were also deists and/or outright agnostic, like Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson.

(They also didn't put "One nation under God" in the pledge... they didn't even write the pledge. That came up after the Civil War (known to many of you as the War of Yankee Agression) expressly to promote the liberal-yankee-imposed concepts of "One nation indivisible" and "with liberty and justice for all". And the words "Under God" were not even added until the '50s. Again, nice try.)

The quotes backing up my claims are many, and I know that you can find a few that dispute them, but the facts I just stated about the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are easily verifiable on line. Find the documents using google and then click Edit from your toolbar and type in the search words (bible, Jesus, Jehovah, God, Yaweh, etc.) and see for yourself.

On a similar note to President Adams' quote, I hope everyone has been to faithfreedom.org (home to the indomitable Ali Sina) and read the quote by Winston Churchill that begins "What dreadful curses Mohameddanism lays upon its votaries!" or something like that.

Been thinking a lot about the Lion of England since I gave mother a Bartlett Dictionary of Quotations for Christmas. I turned straight to Churchill first thing. (He started on page 666! LOL. They left out "The British Navy is maintained on three traditions: rum, sodomy, and the lash.")

He also liked to call Hitler "The Corporal" since that was the highest rank Hitler ever earned in the army. LOL.

Oh yeah... I know all you "patriotic" types will like this... I read a lot this year about D-Day and how Churchill wanted to be on the first round of invasion (Montgomery and Eisenhower made him wait a few days)... one bigwig that DID come in on the first wave was General Cotta. (Check the spelling; most of that reading was in June.) Do a search and read about his fearless and inspiring bravery that motivated the troops all around him!

Speaking of D-Day, I know "some of" you hate the French (presumably excluding their 3000 combat troops helping us fight the War on Terror in Afghanistan) but I recall reading about 09-12-01 and the massive WALL of wreaths, candles, cards, well-wishes, etc. piled around the US Embassy in Paris. Some signs said "06 Juin 1944."

We should hear more about the murdered Maulvi and his people--who are apparently the folks demonstrating for a human rights group to come in and help. My guess is they'd also like to have the baddies caught and judged, too. If India has Muslims like the Yemeni immigrants who informed on the six Buffalo area terrorists, I wish them longl ife, peace, prosperity, and every blessing God can give.

Elephant: there's a little book by Richard Grenier entitled _The Gandhi Nobody Knows_, which gives a less than flattering picture of the man. Among other things, he not only said the Jews of Europe should've committed mass suicide, but also had the colonialist's medicine witheld from his suffering wife, who died as a result. He slept nude with young female devotees at his ashram to "test" his vow of chastity and control over his bindu fluid (semen), was obsessed with enemas and bowel movements, and a host of other things. His elder son, Harilal, converted to Islam, became and alchoholic, and wrote vitriolic tracts against his father.

As for the Hindu fanaticism that produced Gandhi's assassin, it not only riots against Muslims, but also persecutes Sikhs, burns Christians alive, and would like to bring back the ancient and honorable practice of putting the widow on her husband's funeral pyre.

I did not intend to show that the "founding fathers wanted a Christian church-state"; rather, I was responding to the continued assertion that Adams was favorably disposed philosophically and practically toward islam. If you revisit the thread, you'll see the same quote from a treaty pasted repeatedly, in contrast to what Adams said substantively about islam throughout his writings. I was merely pointing out that discrepancy and the [false] portrayal perpetrated by the muslim intending to persuade that America's founding fathers were welcoming toward islam - which they were NOT. This tactic is used by muslims in an ongoing campaign to establish the U.S. as being founded according to a Judeo-Christian-islamic tradition, which it most certainly was not.

Cross, this is not what they are developmentally driven to desire. There are two sources of self-esteem, and they are 1) competence (the confidence that one has to solve the ordinary problems that confront one during life) and 2) independence (the confidence that one need not normally rely on others for the ordinary requirements of life, but only do so in emergent situations).

Islam takes their people, and from the very beginning instills in them such intense reliance (under threat of being "immoral" if they aren't), on the thousands upon thousands of little micromanagerial "rules" to govern every tiny aspect of life, that they can have neither competence nor independence. They are told how to have sex, how to wipe their asses (yes, Norseman, it is with pebbles or a cloth, but it only requires one, not three), which hand to wipe with (the non-dominant, since the dominant, which is required to be the right hand), what day and in what fashion to trip their nails, etc. etc. ad nauseam. Where your entire intellectual life, is filled with concerns like this, rather than how to cure cancer etc., you can hardly think of yourself as competent or independent, therefore you have no self-esteem.

It is not the biologically mandated goal of the individual human being to be incompetent or dependent; when deprived of any hope of acquiring self-esteem, people--including those born into Islam--become unhappy and hostile, especially when viewing those who ARE competent and independent.
