Update on this story. From The Scotsman, with thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist:
A passenger who caused a British Airways jet to return to the UK after US authorities objected to the man landing in New York was questioned and released by police. The 747 jumbo jet was almost halfway into its journey yesterday when the decision was taken to turn it around following the US request, said a BA spokesman.
A spokeswoman from the US Transportation Security Administration said: “There was a person travelling on a French passport who was a positive match with an anti-terrorism watch list.
“Homeland security made the match by checking data transmitted after the flight departed from London.”
The spokeswoman added that the man, who was not named, was met by FBI officials when the plane arrived at Heathrow airport late yesterday afternoon.
British police detained the man, but stressed he was not arrested, and released him without charge after questioning him for two hours.
Very strange. Like so many such stories, there is much more being withheld than revealed. If there was no reason to hold him, the plane should not have been turned back. If there was reason to turn the plane back, it is curious that he was released so quickly.

Not so strange - you can bet they are tailing this guy, to lead them to the "big fish"/network. Standard police practice.

IS THIS A SCENE FROM "24" OR WHAT?
As I spoke of yesterday the tactics that MUST be used are very, very distressing and they are addressed at the safety of the WHOLE public (world) so extreme measures might be used.
I take no offense at this tactic if used; we must not leave any rock unturned, no cave left unsearched, all mosque's inventoried and on and on, what ever it takes.
My children and grandchildren will know the word of God through his Son Jesus Christ, they will know the blood of heroes who secure our freedoms as well as though in need; we are in a War known as a fourth generation war where the enemy is your friend by day and plots to kill you by night, they turn in an instance to force an ideology down your throut or through it.

As a frequent flyer, I wonder why the issue is resolving while the plane is midway to it's destination.
Don't get me wrong . . .I'm greatful for and fully support every effort taken to keep air travel safe. I am concerned that questions arise and resolve while the plane is in transit.

Reichstagsakten 1888/89, 7. Lp., Vol. 121, Attachment 41: Collection of Documents pertaining the Uprising in East Africa, No. 28: Directive to the Imperial ambassador in London
Friedrichsruh, October 28th 1888
It is to be desired that our agreement with England on fighting the slave trade and the import of weapons to East Africa will have the shape of an international agreement. Such a document would establish limits for the expansion of the continued expansion of the Muslim and slave trading movement, by the moral impression by the accord of the two European powers so far engaged there, and also, more propably, will lead to the cooperation of the other European states engaged. I propose the exchange of notifications between us and Britain, in which we take upon ourselves the obligation, under the condition (p.412) on an equal participation of Britain for the same purpose, to fight the anti-Christian and anti-civilizatoric movement which has emerged over the last years on the African continent, and to recognize the prohibition of the export of slaves and the import of arms and ammunition as the most effective means, as it is only the possession of superior arms ans ammunitions which enables the Arab and Muslim minority to undertake slave hunts and wars necessary to obtain slaves, and to keep up the superiority of their race in Africa's interior.
The slave trade and the initiative Britain has taken to combat it, have been origin and incentive to the union of all elements interested in the matter, and which have made it possible to use Muslim fanaticism in the interest of this over one thousand years old tradition of African slave trade and to call on them for war. The effects of this movement, large and small, can be seen in the positions of the Mahdi, of Tippu Tip and in the rising number of murders of Europeans in Africa's interior. To transfer christianity and European civilization to Africa by armed force is not feasible because of the width of the country and of the climate. The indigenous population would be susceptible to the European efforts if it was not suppressed by the force of arms, the higher intelligence and the
cohesion of the Arab Muslims. We could outmatch the latter only, if we strike at the source of their superiority, superior armament and the realisation of their profits, by the suppression of the import of arms and the export of slaves.
Therefore I regard it a task no Christian nation should exclude itself from, to interrupt as far as possible the import of weapons and ammunition to Africa's interior and the export of slaves. This task shall be mainly taken care of by the two powers most interested in the Sultanate of Zanzibar, Germany and Britain; but to its complete solution it is recommended, to, soon, gain the cooperation of the neighbouring Portuguese government and of His Majesty the King of Belgium for the Congo Free State. It is also recommended to kindly ask the French government for their cooperation, in order to prevent arms import into the Congo area and in order to end the abuse of the French flag in East Africa by Arab dhows.
Your Excellency will request Lord Salisbury to confirm his approval with these opinions by a note to Sir Edward Malet, in order to cause the British navy to join in a concerted blockade of the Zanzibar coast, and, like us, but operating separately, to ask the previously mentioned governments to decree respective instructions.

Robert, you ask: "If there was no reason to hold him, the plane should not have been turned back. If there was reason to turn the plane back, it is curious that he was released so quickly?"
The answer is fairly straight forward. When deciding who is persona non grata, US law considers evidence from outside its jurisdiction, however, EU law (including the UK in this case) only permits the arrest of people for crimes committed in the EU or from outside the EU if these is an extradition request. Thus if the US refuses entry to someone for offenses committed in the Middle East, the EU has no reason to arrest them for those offences because they were not committed in the EU.
Also, to answer Justamomof4's question, the US authorities want to ensure that the person doesn't land in the US as once the plane had landed the suspect can appealed any deportation orders and started legal proceedings thus gaining a foothold on US soil. In cases like this where the person is a citizen of a visa waiver state there was no visa application where denial of entry could have been stated before flight was booked, and legal mechanism to stop the person boarding the plane at point of departure.
Indeed, the US actually has no idea the person is on the flight until boarding is complete and the plane has left the gate. Only at that point can the airline compile the list and forward it on to the DHS who then have to process it and run as many visa-style checks as possible on all X-hundred passengers. They effectively have only the flight time to process all passengers on all flights leaving visa waiver countries - not a simple task, even with powerful computers.

Actually, the US didn't turn the plane around. The pilot was ordered to land at Bangor, Maine, where the FBI would remove the suspect passenger before the plane got near any "targets". The pilot instead chose to ask permission to return to Britain.

Reichstagsakten 1888/89, 7. Lp., Vol. 121, Attachment 41: Collection of Documents pertaining the Uprising in East Africa, No.25: Petition of the Assembly to suppress the slave trade at Freiburg im Breisgau on November 10th 1888.
Resolutions of the public assembly, held on November 9th 1888 in the Festhalle in Freiburg im Breisgau
1. The suppression of African slave hunts with their atrocities dishonouring mankind is the common obligation of all Christian states and the necessary precondition of real abolition of slave trade.
2. As articles 6 and 9 of the Congo Act oblige all powers to join in the suppression of slave trade, the Congo Free State, Portugal, England and Germany, directly attacked by the Arab slave traders, and harmed in their interests and national tasks, are obliged, in mutual understanding to take up the unavoidable struggle and to fight it to the end.
3. We express our thanks to the Reich government for the steps it has already taken in this direction and we trust that in the rebellion in Ostafrika, mainly caused by Arab slave traders, the honour of the German flag and German interests will be effectively upheld.
4. Such a procedure may count on the unanimous support of the German people without regard for religious confession and political party; so Reichstag undoubtedly will actively support it, too.
5. In addition to the energetic action by the German Reich government we approve all voluntary aid contributions and we especially recommend to materially support the German Emin Pascha Expedition, currently in preparation.
