I. Taqiyya and Tu-QuoqueNPR’s All Things Considered. January 7, 2005 • "Jihad" is one of the few Arabic words used in English. It means "spiritual struggle," but many Muslims have pointed out that "jihad" is almost always used in English in the context of terrorism, even though the actual meaning is broader. Commentator Anisa Mehdi would like to propose a word that could be used instead of "jihad." -- From the NPR Website
Anisa Mehdi, a guest on NPR’s All Things Considered, has suggested that for the word “Jihad” – possibly the word of greatest significance in the texts, and history, of Islam – another word could be used. For Muslims, she insisted, were made uneasy by the continued use of this word “in the context of terrorism” when its “actual meaning is broader.” And so, to prevent unnecessary harm to Islam’s image, she asks if it might not be possible to avoid the word “Jihad” altogether.
She has a point. And we will sharpen her point, with a pencil-sharpener of our own choosing. But first it would be useful to describe the current state of Infidel knowledge about Islam, and of Muslim attempts to shape or limit that knowledge. An army of apologists for Islam, both Muslim and non-Muslim, is abroad in the land today, yet many Infidels seem not to be following the script. Some appear determined to educate themselves, rather than rely on the Outreach Programs of local imams in local mosques or, for that matter, on National Public Radio. Not everyone seems quite as willing, as they once were, to be satisfied by the pabulum of Karen Armstrong or the coffee-table books of John Esposito. Infidels have discovered websites where four or even five Quran’ic translations are laid out for comparative reading, a horizontal pentapla that may be accessed at www.usc.edu. At the same site, or at many others, Infidels can now read for themselves hundreds of the Hadith (the sayings and acts of Muhammad), as collected and catalogued according to its relative authenticity by such trusted Hadith-compilers, or muhaddithin, as Bukhari and Muslim (a proper name). In addition to reading Qur’an and Hadith, Infidels can read the sira, or life of Muhammad. As al-insan al-kamil, the Model of Perfect Man, the figure of Muhammad is at the center of Islam, and everything he is reported to have done or said, or even remained silent about, in 7th century Arabia, remains as vivid, compelling, and emulous today.
And finally, not content with reading Qur’an and Hadith and sira, those Infidels have embarked on learning about the history of Jihad-conquest of those vast lands where, far more numerous, settled, wealthy, and advanced populations, of Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians, Hindus, and Buddhists all lived and, upon conquest, when not killed or forcibly converted at once to Islam, were permitted to live as “dhimmis,” as non-Muslims under Muslim rule were called, subject to carefully elaborated financial, legal, political, and social disabilities that made life for them one of humiliation, degradation, and physical insecurity.
It has been quite an effort to prevent Infidels from getting the wrong (that is to say, the right) impression of Islam, at least until such time as Muslims in the West currently singing the praises of “pluralism” no longer have need for Infidel good will and tolerance. To date, the twin techniques of “Taqiyya” and Tu-Quoque have been relied on. “Taqiyya” is the religiously-sanctioned doctrine, with its origins in Shi’a Islam but now practiced by non-Shi’a as well, of deliberate dissimulation about religious matters that may be undertaken to protect Islam, and the Believers. A related term, of broader application, is “kitman,” which is defined as “mental reservation.” An example of “Taqiyya” would be the insistence of a Muslim apologist that “of course” there is freedom of conscience in Islam, and then quoting that Qur’anic verse -- “There shall be no compulsion in religion.” But the impression given will be false, for there has been no mention of the Muslim doctrine of abrogation, or naskh, whereby such an early verse as that about “no compulsion in religion” has been cancelled out by later, far more intolerant and malevolent verses. In any case, history shows that within Islam there is, and always has been, “compulsion in religion” for Muslims, and for non-Muslims. The “compulsion” for Muslims comes from the treatment of apostasy as an act punishable by death. And though “dhimmis” are allowed to practice their religion, they do so under conditions of such burdens and restrictions that many, not as an act of conscience but rather as a response to inexorable Muslim pressure, have converted (or “reverted”) to Islam.
“Kitman” is close to “taqiyya,” but rather than outright dissimulation, it consists in telling only a part of the truth, with “mental reservation” justifying the omission of the rest. One example may suffice. When a Muslim maintains that “jihad” really means “a spiritual struggle,” and fails to add that this definition is a recent one in Islam (little more than a century old), he misleads by holding back, and is practicing “kitman.” When he adduces, in support of this doubtful proposition, the hadith in which Muhammad, returning home from one of his many battles, is reported to have said (as known from a chain of transmitters, or isnad), that he had returned from “the Lesser Jihad to the Greater Jihad” and does not add what he also knows to be true, that this is a “weak” hadith, regarded by the most-respected muhaddithin as of doubtful authenticity, he is further practicing “kitman.”
The use of the word in Qur’an and Hadith, and constantly through 1350 years of Muslim history, has certainly endowed the word “Jihad” with a meaning of struggle, usually through military means, to expand the domain of Islam. Almost all Muslims understand that “warfare” (qital, qatala) is the essential meaning of the word. But Infidels, who prefer to think otherwise, have eagerly snapped up little guides such as that put out a few years ago by Karen Armstrong, a compleat apologist and no scholar of Islam, who made sure to quote that hadith in support of her proposition that Jihad is a “spiritual struggle.” The meaning of words comes from their common and accepted usage, not from what someone wishes to convince us should, for the purpose of a temporarily comforting harmony, be believed to be the meaning.
Jihad as military conquest is of course discussed in the Qur’an and Hadith, and in the commentaries on the Qur’an. And while “qital” or combat is mentioned 27 times in the Qur’an, other instruments of Jihad are also commonly discussed; any Islamic website will provide examples. One is the use of “wealth” to create the conditions that will help to spread Islam. Another is the use of “pen, speech” – persuasion, propaganda -- to spread Islam. Still another instrument of Jihad discussed, for example, in the pages of Muslim newspapers, is the use of demography as a weapon of Jihad. Muslim populations within the Bilad al-kufr, or Lands of the Infidels, are seen as helping to spread through Da’wa, the Call to Islam, and in their own increasing presence within Infidel lands, as contributing to the inexorable spread of Islam.
The situation in the world today borders on the fantastic. Never before in history has one civilization allowed large numbers of those who come from an alien, and immutably hostile situation, to settle deep within that first civilization’s borders. Never before have the members of one civilization failed to investigate, and even willfully refused to investigate, or to listen to those who warn about, the consequences for all non-Muslims of the belief-system of Islam. In history, the phenomenon of the Barbarians at the Gates is hardly new. Those barbarians lay siege; if they win, they enter in triumph. Should they lose, the advanced civilization survives. But never before have the gates been opened, to an entering force that has not even been identified or understood. Never before have the inhabitants of the by-now vulnerable city made efforts not to recognize, or realize, what they have done, and what they have undone. That demographic intrusion shows no signs of diminishing. The systematic building of mosques and madrasas, paid for by Saudi Arabia, everywhere in the Western world, helps to make the conduct of Muslim life easier. Western populations have been trained to make much of “celebrating diversity” and “promoting difference” and constructing, on a base of militant but unexamined pluralism, an edifice of legal rights and entitlements. These rights, these entitlements, this militant pluralism are exploited by Muslims who do not believe in pluralism. Nor do they accept the individual rights of conscience and free speech, the legal equality of men and women, and of religious and racial minorities, recognized, for example, in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Their current claim to support pluralism is based on the need to protect, and increase the power of, the Muslim umma, or Community, within the West, until such time as that umma no longer needs to pretend to have any interest in Western pluralism and Western values.
“Taqiyya” and “kitman” are no longer needed for Muslims addressing purely Muslim audiences. While in the early days, the Shi’a were afraid of Sunni persecution, and therefore needed to practice taqiyya, today both Sunni and Shi’a, by and large, do not find that they need dissimulate about the nature of Islam for other Muslims. It is only when non-Muslims may overhear, and begin to understand, an intra-Muslim discussion, that the need to dissimulate is emphasized. Yassir Arafat could, with impunity, refer to the Treaty of al-Hudaibiyya in speeches to fellow Muslims. He was fortunate; no Westerners, or even Israelis, seemed to think that the significance of that repeated allusion to Muhammad’s treaty with the Meccans in 628 A.D. needed to be examined.
Among those who see no need to practice taqiyya when rousing fellow Muslims, but instead see the need to remind their listeners of the central tenets and teachings of Islam, are Osama Bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi. The canonical texts support their view of the need for, the duty for, Jihad. And they receive a good deal of support, and admiration, all over the Muslim world. For they are not renegades, not unorthodox, not the promoters of a wild misinterpretation of Islam. Their view of Islam is exactly what Muhammad, Ibn Taymiyya, Al-Ghazali, Ibn Khaldun, and all the greatest Qur’anic commentators, muhaddithin, and theologians in the history of Islam, would have understood and shared. Some Muslims believe that at the moment, Islam is too weak, and therefore, for the sake of Islam itself, the truth of its teachings should not be so clearly expressed, and acted upon. It may be that Bin Laden and Al-Zawahiri themselves will reach the same conclusion. That would not constitute an abandonment of Jihad, but rather a prudent relinquishing of terrorism as a weapon of Jihad, and greater emphasis on other, tactically more effective, weapons of Jihad, such as Da’wa and demographic increase. The idea that “Jihad” is primarily a “spiritual struggle” would cause laughter everywhere in the world’s mosques and madrasas, for Muslims know that this definition is flatly contradicted by their texts and their entire history. Yet, the same imam who gives a fiery speech about Jihad can show up at an Interfaith Rally and, with seemingly complete conviction, assure his Infidel audience that, of course, “Jihad” refers only to “a spiritual struggle.” This kind of thing is second nature.
Infidels need to understand that however wary they may pride themselves on being, they are still not prepared for the world of the Muslim East. After many decades of work in Egypt, Lord Edward Cecil affixed, as the epigraph to his once-famous Memoirs of an Egyptian Official, the following: “Here lies one who tried to hustle the East.” Many Englishmen regarded that epigraph as the perfect summary of their own encounters with the Muslim world. “War is deceit,” Muhammad said, and those who regard him as al-insan al-kamil, the Most Perfect of Men, have become past masters at the art of deceit. It is nearly impossible to find a Muslim who will admit to the full truth of what Islam teaches about Infidels, though occasionally it happens. Ex-Muslims are just as well-versed in the teachings of Islam as those who remain Muslims, for they do not suddenly cease to understand Islam when they leave the faith.. They remain the best sources of knowledge about what it means to grow up as a Muslim, in a Muslim society, surrounded by the attitudes toward Infidels that Islam engenders and promotes.
Sometimes Taqiyya is not enough. Muslim spokesmen often attempt to convince an audience of Infidels that Islam is a religion of “peace” and “tolerance.” This, nowadays, works less well than it used to, and if an audience shows signs of not being completely convinced, another tack – that of Tu-Quoque – is attempted. Now these same spokesmen, who a minute before were all sweetness-and-light, begin to attack Christianity and Judaism for their own lack of “peace” and “tolerance.” They support this attack with bloodcurdling passages from Leviticus or some obscure text, possibly attributed to a rabbi from 2500 years ago.
The Crusades are presented by Muslim apologists as a defining moment in Muslim-Christian relations, a moment in which the peaceful and inoffensive Muslims were attacked, without cause. In this version, not a word is uttered about the centuries of Muslim Jihad-conquest that preceded the Crusades – nearly 400 years of seizing lands formerly occupied by Christians in Mesopotamia, Syria, Egypt, North Africa (where, among other Fathers of the Church, Tertullian and St. Augustine were born and lived).
Nor is what prompted the Crusades ever mentioned. For in 1009 A.D. the Fatimid Caliph Hakim had ordered the destruction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and for almost a century the Muslims steadily made encroachments on the Christian presence in, and access to, what was for Western Christendom the Holy Land. And there were, for a thousand years, until the 19th century, a constant series of Muslim raiding-parties that came by sea, and attacked the coastal villages throughout Europe, as far as Ireland and even, in one instance, Iceland. Villages were razed, and many villagers killed, and a million European Christians were kidnapped (see the recent White Gold, by Giles Milton), brought back to dar al-Islam, enslaved, and often forcibly converted. The Crusades have to be understood in their full context.
In Islam the world is uncompromisingly divided between dar al-Islam, the House of Islam, and dar al-harb, the House of War, where Infidels have not yet been subjugated to Islam. “Islam is to dominate and not to be dominated” and eventually, all of the world, which belongs to Allah, will become part of dar al-Islam. The Jihad is the “struggle” to expand Islam, to create the conditions where Muslims may rule, and Islam may prevail. This Jihad to spread Islam has lasted 1350 years. It has no end, until its goal is reached, whatever periods of quiescence must be observed because of lack of effective instruments or power. Not every Muslim heart beats with passion for this idea, but around the world, a great many do. Furthermore, Infidels can never know when a Muslim who seemed so Westernized, so removed from such matters, may undergo a transformation, into a much more menacing True Believer.
The Crusades were different. They were limited in both time and space. There was no interest in re-conquering, for Christianity, any territories held by Muslims beyond the Holy Land itself. The Crusades lasted a mere 200 years. Yet this difference is never noted by Muslims intent on blaming “the Crusades” and not the history of Jihad-conquest of Christian lands, and of the subjugation of Christian populations, to Muslim rule and to Muslim oppression (for the “dhimmi” was not so much a member of a “protected people” as of an “oppressed” –because deliberately humiliated and degraded -- “people”).
Tu-Quoque has led to real absurdities. At one gathering with a Muslim panel and an audience of Infidels, a Muslim professor recently assured his listeners that “Ku Klux Klan members used to sing Christian hymns as they crucified Afro-Americans.” No one bothered to point out that the Ku Klux Klan did not “crucify,” but lynched, its victims; that the Grand Kleagle did not lead his followers in song, much less Christian hymns, during these lynchings, and that the stoutest enemies of slavery, and then of the Ku Klux Klan, were to be found in the churches themselves, beginning with such celebrated abolitionist ministers as the Reverend Theodore Parker and Henry Ward Beecher.
Though NPR has had hosts and guests who allude to Islam, those hosts, and those guests, almost without exception, are well-versed graduates of the Taqiyya and Tu-Quoque schools or, as the taxonomically-minded rhetoricians would say, suppressio veri and suggestio falsi. Those with degrees in Taqiyya insist on focusing on that “handful of extremists,” and “radical Islamists” who, of course, have nothing to do with “the real Islam,” the “peaceful, tolerant Islam” practiced by “the vast majority of moderate Muslims.” Graduates of the Tu-Quoque Academy (whose diplomas are still written in Latin) like to refer airily to “fundamentalists on all sides” who pose an equal threat to one another, and how important it is to “rein in the crazies” that “every society” and “every religion” throws up. But now, at least one invited guest commentator on NPR has suggested that things need to be taken one step further, and the word “Jihad” be dispensed with altogether. And should that step be taken, all the king’s horses and all the king’s men will not be able to put NPR together again.

Moving backwards in time somewhat, in 1493 Spain and Portugal had agreed that all of the Earth's territory west of Africa would be divided between themselves at a north-south line 100 leagues west of the Cape Verde islands (a league is 3 nautical miles, and a nautical mile is about 15% longer than a statute mile). In 1494 the line was moved 270 leagues further west.
The French weren't a party to this deal (called the Treaty of Tordesillas) and not wanting to be left out they began to exploit the South American coast. In order to counter the French incursions the Portuguese Crown divided Brazil up into 14 capitanias (this was between 1534 and 1536), all with straight, horizontal, north and south borders. The grantees of these capitanias were to be responsible for the administration and defense of their lands. Most of them failed miserably at it.
Well, up until now the principal source of wealth provided by Brazil had been pau brasil, or brazilwood (a source of a reddish dye). This was about to be supplanted by white gold -- sugar -- grown and harvested on immense plantations in Brazil's Northeast. Bahia's fortune was in the making, but it was to be a product of the sweat and blood of people who spent their lives producing and not partaking -- enslaved Africans and their descendents.
An estimated 1.3 million slaves were imported into Bahia before slavery was abolished in Brazil in 1888, double the number imported into the entire United States of America
Uprising! Revolt of the Malês
"Abadá" is a word familiar both to people who do capoeira and to people who've marched in Bahian Carnival blocos. In capoeira it refers to the pants worn (and to an organization named for those pants), and in Carnival terms it refers to the shirt/shorts combination which marks one as a member of a particular bloco. The word is derived from the Yoruban "agbada", which in Africa meant a long robe of the type worn in Islamic countries (or areas).
In Bahia, "abadá" had assumed its present linguistic form by the early 19th century, but its association with capoeira and Carnival still lay a century in the future. It denoted at that particular point in the past a long, flowing, white robe, a manner of dress expressly forbidden on the streets of Salvador and which would not be seen in public until the Malês were to rise up in revolt against their enslavement.
Another short digression: The Mali of today is an impoverished African republic, one of the poorest countries in the world. But at one time there was a vast Mali empire sustained by commerce in gold and salt, with Timbuktu as its principal city. "Mali" is derived from the Yoruban "imale", or "Muslim", a reference to the empire's religion. The part of the empire encompassing part of what is now northern Nigeria was the provenance of the Malês of Bahia.

I wonder if that "learned" professor got this idea from watching 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou'.

Another great post Hugh.
I heard Loftus on FNC this afternoon talking about the M13 gang. He also talked about the need of our government to get it's priorities straight. There is going to be a conference February 8-10, with Daniel Pipes, Walid Phares,and others taking part. Maybe those who need desperately to understand what the threat is will begin to get it.

Let Anisa Mehdi take her brief to those Muslims who bandy about the word -- from the leaders of Hamas and Abu Mazen, to all of the imams and mullahs the Saudis have implanted all over Infideldom shrieking it out from their pulpits every Friday.
Non-Muslims who aren't dhimmis or otherwise delluded will stop being wary of Muslims and talking about jihad in the context of bellicose, belligerent acts (whether violent or non-violent, but malevolent all the same) when the Muslim world ceases and desists from justifying all sorts of barbarism, aggression and intolerant acts perpetrated in the name of the faith.

About 250 million followers of Islam worldwide AGREE with Bin Laden. That is a hard image to clean up. Islam has two choices: tone it down or endure conflict. Word games will become a mute point.

The raid on an Italian expedition in 1886 by the Emir of Harar, the threat to stations on the eastern border of the Congo Free State by Arabs, the treatment of Stanley and his companions by Tippu Tip, the attacks on English mission stations in Uganda and on trade settlements on Lake Nyassa, the rebellion in coastal stretches of the Sultanate of Zanzibar which are under British and German administration - all these events give the impression that they are connected with each other, a connection which provides evidence for a slowly increasing, but freely forming movement among the Muslim population in the direction of a reaction against Christian and civilisatoric efforts, namely in the area of slave trade. All nations interested in the promotion of Christian morale share an equal interest in counteracting the dangers posed by such a movement.
The rising importance and expansion the Muslim agitation has gained over the last years in Africa, goes hand in hand with a rising export of powder and arms from Europe to equatorial Africa.
Ample equipment with arms and ammunition facilitates the slave trader's raids and the Arabs' attempts to keep the European opponents of slave trade from penetrating further and to repel them from their present positions.
Therefore it seems to us a common obligation of the European nations engaged in the peaceful opening-up of Africa to obstruct both the slave trade and the arms trade with greater emphasis, than it has been done so far. Such an aim seems only feasible by a blockade of the entire East African coast, which is strong and firm enough to obstruct the export of slaves and the import of arms more effectively as before. If the Royal British government does approve such a measure, we are prepared to enter negotiations with all other concerned powers in order to obtain their approval. I would regard it especially appropriate to obtain France's accord in regard to reject Arab slave trader dhows the right to sail under the French flag.

I have the honour to most obediently send to you the both examples of the treaty signed on April 28th by His Highness the Sultan of Zanzibar on one side and by myself as authorized representative of the Deutsch-Ostafrikanische Gesellschaft on the other side, one version being in English language, the other in Arabic, and to add the following explanations.
From the beginning the Sultan displayed his reluctance to sign a contract with the Deutsch-Ostafrikanische Gesellschaft as such. Repeatedly he assured me orally that he wished to sign the treaty with the Reich government. In order to remove these difficulties and to act in accordance with the instructions given to me I have suggested the solution to mention in the treaty introduction that my authorization as representative of the Deutsch-Ostafrikanische Gesellschaft would have been approved by your Excellency, and so the misgivings of His Highness were overcome. The Sultan emphasized the form of a treaty, seemingly with the intention to more sharply stress the obligation of the opposing side than it would have been done by merely unilaterally granting a concession.
According to the wishes of the Gesellschaft, article 10 concerning the financial share of the Sultan in company profits, has been altered in accordance with its statutes.
Article 11 contains the most favoured nation clause.
Article 14 determines the date for the transfer of the administration. It has the advantage that the Sultan is bound to it from August 15th onward, but the Gesellschaft is free to decide the date of transfer after that date.
As a matter of precaution I have added article 15 in order to make sure that linguistic flaws in the Arab version do no harm. According to Dragoman Michalla, the Arab text of the preliminary treaty is imprecise and unclear in its formulations, and it would have been necessary to write a new text. But this would have complicated the negotiations, as already at that time I was wrongly accused of having added changes to the first 8 unaltered points. Herr Michalla thus had to acquiesce in changing those points in an explanatory way which differed from the English text, which also had been confusing to the Arab consultants of the Sultan, but otherwise to leave the Arab text unaltered. As now the English text is decisive in case of differing interpretations, the danger from linguistic flaws of the Arab version has been removed.

It is to be desired that our agreement with England on fighting the slave trade and the import of weapons to East Africa will have the shape of an international agreement. Such a document would establish limits for the expansion of the continued expansion of the Muslim and slave trading movement, by the moral impression by the accord of the two European powers so far engaged there, and also, more propably, will lead to the cooperation of the other European states engaged. I propose the exchange of notifications between us and Britain, in which we take upon ourselves the obligation, under the condition (p.412) on an equal participation of Britain for the same purpose, to fight the anti-Christian and anti-civilizatoric movement which has emerged over the last years on the African continent, and to recognize the prohibition of the export of slaves and the import of arms and ammunition as the most effective means, as it is only the possession of superior arms ans ammunitions which enables the Arab and Muslim minority to undertake slave hunts and wars necessary to obtain slaves, and to keep up the superiority of their race in Africa's interior.
The slave trade and the initiative Britain has taken to combat it, have been origin and incentive to the union of all elements interested in the matter, and which have made it possible to use Muslim fanaticism in the interest of this over one thousand years old tradition of African slave trade and to call on them for war. The effects of this movement, large and small, can be seen in the positions of the Mahdi, of Tippu Tip and in the rising number of murders of Europeans in Africa's interior. To transfer christianity and European civilization to Africa by armed force is not feasible because of the width of the country and of the climate. The indigenous population would be susceptible to the European efforts if it was not suppressed by the force of arms, the higher intelligence and the
cohesion of the Arab Muslims. We could outmatch the latter only, if we strike at the source of their superiority, superior armament and the realisation of their profits, by the suppression of the import of arms and the export of slaves.
Therefore I regard it a task no Christian nation should exclude itself from, to interrupt as far as possible the import of weapons and ammunition to Africa's interior and the export of slaves. This task shall be mainly taken care of by the two powers most interested in the Sultanate of Zanzibar, Germany and Britain; but to its complete solution it is recommended, to, soon, gain the cooperation of the neighbouring Portuguese government and of His Majesty the King of Belgium for the Congo Free State. It is also recommended to kindly ask the French government for their cooperation, in order to prevent arms import into the Congo area and in order to end the abuse of the French flag in East Africa by Arab dhows.
Your Excellency will request Lord Salisbury to confirm his approval with these opinions by a note to Sir Edward Malet, in order to cause the British navy to join in a concerted blockade of the Zanzibar coast, and, like us, but operating separately, to ask the previously mentioned governments to decree respective instructions.

No. And in response to your request, we have one for you. Would you kindly cease trivializing Americans' defense against militant Islam by sidetracking us with non-issues such as this? All you are doing, Ms. Mehdi, by taking up our valuable time, is abetting militant Islam's genocidal global jihad campaigns and I do mean 'JIHAD'. Before 9-11 I knew nothing about Islam but casually knew many Moslems. Some exhibited certain characteristics such as lying directly and convincingly in business transactions and showing an uncanny ability to make an agreement, sign a contract or make a fervent promise -- than breaking it almost immediately (in some cases literally within hours) without caring about the legality or bothering to explain when confronted.
I did not know at the time, but always wondered how a person would so easily lie after being so friendly and enthusiastic about a commitment. Now I know that lying as experienced by Moslems in the business sense is sanctioned in Islam when dealing with non-Moslems.
Despite this many were very likeable as well and I do not mean to imply that all were deceptive. But there was an unmistakable cultural trait that was very apparent as was their strong sense of community and purpose.
Mr. Fitzgerald alludes to this when mentioning that their lives in Western societies are made easier by our allowing Saudi Arabia to finance mosque and community center construction here. He also mentions that there will come a time when they are sufficiently positioned to tear-off the mask and reveal themselves to be what they really are, imperial storm-troopers for Islam (my words, not Mr. Fitzgerald's).
Their uniforms are not those of a highly honed and outwardly disciplined military machine marching in unison down the Champ Elysées, but that of poor haggard refugees and immigrants only seeking their niche in this world.
That is what throws us off and disarms us. Moslem immigration is a spearhead thrust into a non-Moslem society as surely as the Nazi Blitzkrieg thrust into Russia was during operation "Barbarossa".
They are as disciplined and committed to the advancement of Islam as their predecessors 1,450 years before them were in conquering the world for Islam. If we in the West fall to Islam first in Europe, which would greatly affect the survival of Israel, then America is soon to be the next sacrificial lamb in the Moslem strategy of divide and conquer for Allah operating under "multi-culti" camouflage.
Moslems weather they be Islamist, fundamentalists or the Mohammad from the corner deli are all committed to varying degrees to the destruction of the Infidel. The fact that little Mohammad the Deli clerk has a donation can for the Al Aqsa Mosque on his counter may strike you as odd, but even if he is simply just a Moslem from Pakistan just plying his wares, he cannot and will not interfere with the extremists in his community because it is they who wield the real authority and power.
Demanding that genuinely "moderate" Moslems speak out in America for a reformation is like asking them to commit suicide. They cannot out of fear or in many cases; actually support the expansionistic characteristics of Islam by violent jihad if necessary, because it conforms to the teachings of their religion.
Simply put, our insane immigration policies is allowing too many Moslems into the country, multiculturism is shielding their establishment as fully functional agents of imperial conquest and our clueless government officials are allowing the radicals to take over and operate the mosques as well as intimidate those within their own community.
We are breeding our own future intifada here which will result in a future civil war in America and the Islamification of the European continent which will clearly occur first.

Its interesting reading this article, I have been concerned abou Islam for some time. My comment is really a question. I do not want to see our liberal rights based socities destroyed by Islam. But then again I do not want to see millions of decent people killed in this conflict, how do we stop Islam from taking over our countries and our way of life.
Without a doubt, normal decent Muslim people are being used as a demographic timebomb to destroy our societies. How do we prevent this from happening without under-mining our freedoms by attacking what is currently a minority, do we have to become like them to beat them, that really makes me shudder, but I can not see any other way, I think we have to discriminate using the same dhimmi tactics. We have to tone down the Mosques and bring them under our control and I think that any further Muslim immigration should be blocked. But in doing so we must not lose sight of the fact that most of these people are just people who largely want the same things as us.
Can we westernize Islam, if not then they have no place in our societies. That is not a racist statement, its basically that as a citizen you have to respect and uphold the laws of that country. Sharia law is not UK law.
Finally a comment on the UK, I can not accept that there should be laws preventing the critiscm of the Muslim faith, because of one simple aspect, it is also a system of governance, if they hide behind this then there is no stopping them, can't the politicians wake up to that? Or are they really that stupid, I am glad that I live in France which is actively seeking ways to defend securlism.

Daffersd, I'm afraid I must disagree with your statement "most of these people are people who want largely the same things as us." Muslims want Islam and Sharia; is that what you want? Are you willing to give, literally sacrifice, your heritage and culture to these primitive invaders and usurpers? Do you find their culture more appealing than your own?
I think you would answer "no" to all of my questions but you are obviously as brainwashed by liberal, multi-culti hogwash as muslims are brainwashed by Islam.
I must have been out sick when the liberals were indoctrinating the masses in the sacred doctrine of moral/cultural/religious relativism, political correctness, and multi-culturalism. Islam is a primitive, tribal, barbaric belief system steeped in corruption,deceit, intolerance, misogyny, stagnation, superstition, fatalism, and pure ignorance. Europe is teeming with muslims; the U.S. already has too many but we're still far short of the hordes that occupy Europe. Muslims have never peacefully coexisted with anybody for long and the muslim population in Europe is about to reach critical mass. Did you have any voice or choice in your government's decision to allow your country to be literally overrun by bellicose, third-world, muslim immigrants who are proving to be the most hostile,intractable, demanding, implacable citizens?
Can you name one thing muslims are good for? Personally, I can't think of a single thing. I would much prefer that they had all remained in their lovely Islamic utopias where they could live a proper Islamic life, instead of coming to America and polluting our landscape with mosques; our cities with filthy ghettoes fashioned after their native hellholes; our legal system with frivolous lawsuits; and our security with their contemptible,violent,intolerant religion.
What god or omnipotent authority decreed that all people in the Western world must accept and embrace multiculturalism in their societies? When was this unwritten fiat enacted? I don't think it was, but it is certainly a legal and moral obligation in the minds of most people, despite the fact that it is destroying our culture, identity, and heritage. I vehemently reject people in my society who are not willing to become a part of it, and I will never even pretend to consider them Americans. They don't, why should I?
My father's grandparents hailed from Poland and Lithuania, my mother's from Scotland and England. I am proud of my European heritage, but I am an American. Muslims are loyal to Islam---PERIOD. Islam is the deadliest threat to ever confront the Western world, worse than communism and Nazism combined. It's going to take much more than secularism to defeat this enemy; I'd start praying if I were you.

Its certainly a problem, what do we do with them now that they are here, convert them. I would get rid of the Mosques and created a cleaner version of Islam suitable for the Western socities in which they live.

I agree its a deadly threat and we have woken up to it late and some people have not seemd to grasp the threat at all,, however people like me will not give in, I want to prevent these people from taking over.
Pray, who to, I don't believe in God and I certainly do not respect any religion. I am a godless European after all.

Become of aware of the storm that is coming and be prepared!!
Believing in God helps some but a gun and ammo and an emeergancy kit and to know what to do Helps TOO!!
Rally those who think like you do so they know what this fight is about!!

People, the most important thing we need to do now is to educate. Our fellow citizens don’t understand the threat of Islam. No battle plan can be implemented, let alone successful, if we do not understand the enemy and what we are fighting for.
What are we up against? Just today, I noticed something disturbing in the New York Times (well, actually that happens everyday) in the main section page 10 (Sunday Times 1/16). There was a list of books recommended as preparation for those going to Iraq. Three of the first 4 books were written by Karen Armstrong and John Esposito. This is pro-Islamic propaganda! The shocker: they were recommended by our lead commander in Iraq for his close aids.
We have a hell of a fight to wake people up. This is the first order of business.

My God, why would this man choose the crap written by the two most egregious Islamic apologists on the planet?! The first thing they should all read is "The Arab Mind" by Raphael Patai, for some critical insight into the bizarre Arab psyche. Arab culture and Islam go hand in hand, even in areas where the indigenous culture survived to some extent after the Islamic invasion.
I can understand the general population's ignorance to some extent, but how could the military be so blind? What will it take to open the eyes of our LEADERS? How many more attacks by muslim jihadists before they get it?! Karen Armstrong?! Esposito?! I just don't believe it!
Obviously the Qur'an isn't going to wake anybody up. People read the violent, intolerant, murderous Qur'an and say, "Oh, it's no worse than the Old Testament and you can't take it literally." They just cannot comprehend the fact that muslims do take it literally.
We deserve better than this from Congress, the president, the military. Our government's primary job is to protect America. How can a government who doesn't even know who our enemies are protect us?
