They are already agitating for some aspects of Islamic law. What will keep them from the rest? How can the reporter be so sure that they have little interest in holy war -- or even if they don't now, how can be be sure what they will think in 10 years? From Reuters, with thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist:
SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS, Mexico (Reuters) - Islam has joined a battle for the hearts and minds of Mexico's volatile Tzotzil Indians in Chiapas state, home of Zapatista rebels and a hotbed of sectarian strife between Christians. In an unlikely meeting of two worlds, an idealistic Muslim sect has converted some 300 Tzotzils, a Maya Indian group known for drink-fueled fiestas and religious fervor.
"It was difficult to learn the prayers in Arabic at first but now I have them in my heart," said Muhammad Emin Lopez, 46, a Tzotzil fruit merchant who boasts that his conversion to Islam in 1995 was the state's first.
He prays five times a day as required in Islam, has gone on the obligatory "haj" pilgrimage to Mecca and attends a small mosque in a cornfield on the outskirts of the hill town of San Cristobal de las Casas.
Beside the mosque, a Tzotzil woman dressed in colorful Indian garb and known by the Muslim name Karima washes clothes in a stream near ramshackle wooden houses.
The growth of Islam in such a restive area has raised the eyebrows of Mexico's intelligence agency, wary of possible terrorist activity aimed at the neighboring United States.
But the Tzotzil Muslims have little interest in holy war, having seen religious and political conflict close up....
They are highly critical of the charging of interest rates as un-Islamic and advocate scrapping currencies, taxes and the nation state, to be replaced with Islamic emirates trading in gold coins.
"Our model is not ideological or utopian but is based on the life of our Prophet Mohammad," reads a statement on the group's Mexican web site, http://www.islammexico.org.mx.

Is there no place this plague has not touched. Does any one continant remain pure, free of islams satanic touch???
WE all know jihadists are using Mexico as a way into the USA, but now it seems they're making a few conversions while they're there. There is no place on earth safe from this death cult, only it's eradication will free us.

When we get rid of Islam in the west, we will have to get rid of it everywhere on earth, totally eradicate it.
There is no other way.

I'd rather they turn back to the old gods.

One of the complaints made by Indians throughout Latin America is that their indigenous cultures have been insufficiently preserved, or appreciated, by those of predominantely Spanish descent. The perceived contempt in some countries -- but not in Mexico -- for Indian languages, Indian ways, has been resented and is among the causes for such Indian-based movements that are now underway in, for example, Bolivia.
But just look at Islam. Islam convinces Believers that in order to be real Muslims, they must subscribe to the Arab supremacist ideology. The first step is to take an Arab name. Hence, among the Tzotzil Indians, people who would fight against "oppression" from Mexico City, willingly take on such absurdly foreign names, as "Muhammad" and "Karima." And that is the first generation. Later, the last names will be discarded, and one will end up with "Muhammad Abdul Rashid" living somewhere in the Mayan country. How much better it would have been to re-assume purely Indian names, and to work to preserve Tzotzil culture and folkways.
In a world that claims to appreciate, or to want to appreciate, "diversity," and that wants, or claims to want, to preserve small (disappearing) languages and cultures, the greatest force for a deadly sameness, an Ur-fascism that would make us all exactly alike, slaves of Allah, totally regulated, without art, science, music. There will be no Tzotzil Indians, or any Indian culture at all. Everywhere that Islam went, it tried to create a world where everything that had been before Islam was regarded with contempt and indifference.
The Pakistanis take no interest in the civilization of Hindustan, or still further back, of Mohenjo-Daro. The Muslims in what is now Iraq showed no interest at all in the civilization of ancient Mesopotamia. Nowhere in the entire Muslim East did anyone think to discover, or re-discover, that past, as Western Christianity rediscovered pagan antiquity (not that it had ever been dismissed in the Muslim fashion) during the early Renaissance. If now in Turkey tourists are allowed to view the monuments of Christian Byzantium, it is a combination of impulses: the need for tourist dollars, the Kemalist secularism that permits some Turks to allow themselves to recognize that the world does not begin, and end, with Islam.
Even in Egypt, that relies so much on tourism, Muslim fanatics have ranted for decades against the pyramids. Were those pyramids not a source of such income, one wonders if they would not continue to have been quarried and subject to tomb-robbers as, over the centuries, they were.
The re-discovery of the civilizations of the ancient Near East is owed entirely to Western (European and American) students and scholars. From Champollion deciphering the Rosetta Stone, to Lepsius the German scholar, to Howard Carter uncovering Tutankhamen, in Egypt, and from Sir Henry Layard to Leonard Woolley in Mesopotamia and Egypt, the entire enterprise has been one of non-Muslims (only recently, and only by a very few, who have begun to appreciate, despite Islam, this heritage from the Jahiliyya, or pre-Islamic period of Ignorance). The Cairo Museum and the Baghdad Museum were both creatures of the British, including Gertrude Bell who was in Baghdad the first Director of Antiquities.
What is happening to the Tzotzil Indians is what is happening, systematically, wherever Islam can spread by Da'wa. This should be regarded not as a matter of a ministry, because these people are not regarded so much as having their souls saved, where they must undergo some real training and demonstrate some understanding. Not at all. The reason Islam makes it so easy to become a "convert" (or "revert")-- all you need to do is recite a single line, in a language you do not understand -- is because you are not so much an individual who has, after thought, come to certain conclusions, but rather -- a recruit into the Army of Islam.
While Islam spread mainly by conquest, it was not exclusively so. Hadrami (from the Hadramaut) traders went out to Java, and spread Islam. Military colonies of Muslims were established, and systematically conducted Da'wa in the East Indies. Over time, the indigenous Hindus and Buddhists were pushed back, and many converted, some -- but by no means all -- forcibly.
If you agree with some who think this is a "war on terrorism" then simply sit back, relax, and forget about Da'wa. Let Tariq Ramadan bring his "message of hope" to Europe. Let Europe be Islamized. Let Mexico, let Latin America, let all of black Africa be Islamized, as long as "terrorism" is not used.
If you do not agree that it is "terrorism" but Islam itself, as a fascist doctrine of complete regulation and mental submission, that is the problem, then you should regard with alarm what has turned Mexican Indians to become Muhammads and Karimas, and to abandon forever whatever remained of their Indian culture and heritage.
These are the new conquistadores, and they are far more potent and dangerous even than those described in the pained pages of Bartolome de las Casas or the Black Legend.

This article scares me. If we lose Mexico this country is lost. I don't think people realize how serious this is. Islam must be considered a threat to mankind or the world will revert to a dark ages where billions will die and civilzation as we know it will be gone forever. What does it take to get the dam liberals awake from there fatal sleep? What does it take to get our congress and president to realize the extreme danger that faces us all??

As P.T. Barnum said, "There's a sucker born every minute." I hope that we will be saved by greed. Capitalists and capitalism cannot function properly within the world of Islam. In fact, in Islam the idea of the corporation as a legal entity does not exist. That is one of the reasons for their deplorable backwardness. Eventually, the capitalists will wake up when Islamists try to take over the means of production but that will not happen for centuries.
And by then, it may be too late as Muslims will have completely infiltrated our societies by then. Our intelligence services, our armies, our bureaucracies will all be ruled by an invisible hand. All criticism of Islam will be mysteriously squashed, caused to disappear. Any attempts to control or regulate Islam will be subverted even before they reach the public eye. Free speech, as anyone can see, has already disappeared because of the self-censorship of the media.
Please, repeat after me, Islam means peace, Islam means peace, Islam means peace ... if you become a Muslim you will know this peace, stop thinking, stop striving, give up your personal identity, become one with the Umma. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, to sink into the deep Umma where you will always be loved, where you always find a place, where there is a purpose, a meaning - to bring the world to Islam. Yes. How noble. How ideal. Who can resist the call of Islam?

The adventure in Iraq, which in its First Stage (the war to locate and destroy major weaponry and arms stores, and to overthrow one of the most sinister dictators around) was justified, in its Second Stage (bringing "democracy" defined merely as a counting of heads, which in turn will inevitably lead to --- what, exactly?)of the "Light-Unto-the-Muslim-Natios Project is a colossal misallocation of men, materiel, money, and may do severe and long-lasting damage to morale of both the citizen-army (Reserves and National Guard), the regular army, and the citizens themselves, at the very moment when the utmost resolve is called for, because as there is no end to the Jihad, there can be no end to defenses against the Jihad, in all of its expressions, using all of its varied armory.
The bill for Iraq is now $300 billion. Well, long-suffering American taxpayers, suppose after the initial invasion and overthrow and discovery of weapons-caches that needed to be destroyed, American troops had left. American airpower (planes and missiles) could still be used as "equalizers" in order to protect, for example, the Kurds. Ammunition and weaponry could be selectively supplied. If the Sunni Sunni and Shi'a went at it (the former better trained and armed, the latter more numerous) -- so what? Eventually some kind of modus vivendi would have been established, without Americans taking the casualties. In any case, I will ask again a pointed question:
Was the Iran-Iraq War a good thing, from the viewpoint of Infidels, or was it not? It was, of course, a very good thing, and should have gone on forever. If the Saudis mistreat the Shi'a in al-Hasa (right where the oilfields are located), and the Wahhabi doctrine views Shi'a as practically Infidels (Zarqawi, the "Palestinian" Jordanian, is hardly alone in his views), if the Shi'a are killed by Sunnis all over Pakistan (many of the large landholders are Shi'a, so resentment is also class resentment, decked out in Islamic garb).
Well, suppose we had left a year ago. Internecine fighting. Eventually someone wins. That will happen in any case. Those who think that al-Sistani is a great democrat and the Shi'a are wonderful have another think coming. Al-Sistani supports elections because the Shi'a are 65% of the population. End of story. He is as much a Muslim, with the same views of Infidels (he will not, for example, meet with any for they are "unclean") as the mullahs next door. The fact that he prefers that he, and other religious figures, remain outside the government does not make him a secularist. Islam must still be reflected in everything that is thought or said or done. He is not the Great Hope of Iraq's Christians -- they are more likely to find what solace they can in the old Ba'athists. The failure to understand all this is extraordinary. So much money, so much effort, so much heroism and sacrifice by American soldiers, and all based on a failure to analyze correctly what it is we should worry about (Islam, not the absence of "democracy" in the Middle East), and the necessary husbanding of resources -- material and moral and intellectual -- that will be required if, in the first place, Europe is to be rescued from islamization. This is not a fantasy.
Suppose of the $200 billion saved (and add to that another $100 billion for the next few years), that had all been put into energy projects, designed to take away from the Arab oilstates the unmerited wealth that has allowed them to build and sustain mosques and madrasas all over the Western world, to buy up many diplomats, intelligence agents, journalists, and media outlets (or shares in major media companies) all over the world. Isn't that more important than sticking around -- certainly after the election next week -- to do what? To train "Iraqi" forces? Will American soldiers be asked to live cheek-by-jowl with those forces in order to better "train" them -- and how many will be treacherously slain by those whom they are training? What a nightmare for security. Would you like to be one of those American soldiers bedding down for the night in the tent next to all those nice Iraqis you are training? Would you like your husband, brother, son to do it? And which Iraqis? Will Kurds and Arabs fight together, or Sunni and Shi'a? How naive, how crazy, how oblivious not only to reality, but to the much larger question. This war, truly, is too important to be left to the generals, but also too important to be left to any civilians who, out of sheer laziness or complacency with cliches about "what all people want," refuse to see, to plan, to do what should be done.
And the usual crew of phony "experts" at think-tanks, including such apologists as Shireen Hunter (for god's sake, she is billed as the Director of "Islamic Studies" at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, which explains a lot, in the same way that the Middle Eastern wing at St. Antony's in Oxford has managed to muddy the thinking of the other, less idiotic, "East European and Russian" wing of the same St. Antony's -- just look at how little Timothy Garton Ash understands Islam, or even thinks he needs to understand) do not help either.
And, to come to my main point, if only 1% of that money -- say, $1 billion a year, were spent on anti-Jihad propaganda, in which Islam and its adherents are put on the defensive, constantly being asked to explain the teachings and tenets of Islam, what would that do to help educate the people in the Western world? But it is not happening.
Okay, deep-pocketed readers. Kindly think clearly the next time you are about to give money to some university, museum, hospital or anything else. Consider carefully what that art museum, hospital, or university will be like if Islam takes over Europe, and if the forces of Islam become more powerful everywhere. Then direct that check you were about to send elsewhere to the right address at Jihadwatch. And mention my name.

Quite frankly, if anyone is concerned about Islam taking Hispanic populations, I would worry more about what Islam is doing to Hispanic 2nd generation immigrants here in the states, than what’s going on in Mexico.
Nevertheless, the US needs to work with Mexico on this and develop some long term plan. Unlike the other religions, this global “Islamist revival” has no respect for our governments and our culture.
Like Communism, Islam sells humanity short by magically showing up and proliferating anywhere there are disenfranchised populations.
at January 27, 2005 11:58 AM
The American government should be working with Hispanic organizations, and giving them money, to track "potential inroads of terrorists." This means, of course, working against Da'wa, alerting people as to the nature of Islamic Ur-fascism, and making sure they realize that in Islam, music and most painting and sculpture will be forbidden. Incessant fun must be directed at the way Islam permits no individual freedom, but regulates every area of life.
Do immigrants worry about the wellbeing of their children? Do they want them to have better lives? They do. Let them know, again and again, that Islam stunts the mental growth. Let them understand that Islam, wherever it went, caused the indigenous civilization to sink and for the lands where Islam conquered, left a social and economic order far less rich than what would have been, had Islam never arrived (think of Byzantium, think of Christian Syria and North Africa, think of HIindustan had Islam not arrived to kill 60-70 million Hindus, and destroy temples, and leave, in Naipaul's phrase, "a wounded civilization").
Money, from the government and from private foundations, should be directed at fighiting Da'wa. Churches -- the churches where people actually believe, not the etiolated churches where everyone is so busy making common cause with the "Palestinians" and have become Defenders of the Faith -- only the Faith turns out to be not Christianity, but Islam -- are a problem. So leave them; walk away. Take your custom elsewhere, or else -- attempt to seize control where the minister in charge exhibits islamisant sympathies and a complete ignorance of what Islam is all about.
On campuses, use the testimony of ex-Muslims. The articles by Azam Kamguian on the treatment of women, the brilliant and relentless campaign of Ali Sina, the cool analyses of Irfan Khawaja, the unanswerable Ibn Warraq (distribute far and wide his essay "Islam, Middle East, and Fascism.")
It would be nice if there were a lot lessmisallocated to Iraq (where less American money and men is definitely more -- and the less of both, the more the more), and much more to doing all of these things. There is only so much that can be done by others on a wing and a prayer.

islam is death for everything i hold dear.
The activities of islam in central and south america must be stopped; talk about a soft underbelly.
Hugh, well put.
Certainly agree that unless we put serious resources, from our national treasuries, into fighting the spread of islam, we will win the battles, but lose the war.
Seems difficult for our governments to accept that the danger, the problem, the threat is from islam itself, and i do agree that, unless and until our governments understand that, they will not start to fight the evil that threatens to engulf us effectively.
Iraq ? Hugely expensive. Entirely possible that, having killed / captured saddam and co., we should have withdrawn to 'Kurdistan' and let the others 'work it out'.
A world wide war with islam, exactly what western governments, and Christianity, have tried to avoid, is on, thanks to islam. If we continue not to fight - we lose.

This is an ugly chapter, but I have to say that the protestant churches and USA making a great work for protestanting the country, in many places like Chiapas rare things like Islam is born.
If this we sum up, the old bishop of Chiapas resigned by the Pope for their communism(libertation teology)and his pretension to create and indigenous church, the problem is great, but in the south of Mexico many catholic missioneries are re-evangelizing another time people that was in Jehova´s Witness and other things.
The Mormonism with their poligamy, out alcohol and other things are dangerous.
But I have hope. This is the consequence of the bad facts of before, and we have, now the possibility to prevent this.
PS: A muslim emir in Chiapas looked for the police is the brother of law of the Culture´Minister Carmen Calvo in Zapatero´s goverment.

Although optimism has never been my strongest virtue, I think we're getting our knickers in too much of a twist with this one. 300 Tzotzil Mayans is incredibly small potatoes, considering Islamic numbers in the U.S. and Canada.
I'm surrounded by Mexican immigrants every day-- young, old, rich, poor, legal and illegal, and please be assured, there are few groups less inclined to Islamic conversion, or more ignorant about Islam. Our Swiss friend Franze is correct by mentioning the burgeoning influence in Mexico of certain Protestant groups, but I think our energies might be better spent focusing on how Islamic terrorists are taking advantage of the porous Mexico-U.S. border rather than thinking that centuries of Spanish-Catholic/Native-Mexican culture are being supplanted by a middle-eastern cult which eschews and despises much of what it means to be Mexican.
