We should be grateful Australia's most senior Islamic cleric has trekked to Baghdad to save the life of Australian hostage Douglas Wood.But the Mufti of Australia, Sheik Taj El-Din El-Hilaly, has at the same time shown -- again -- that not all the Muslim extremists who threaten us are in Iraq.
Surely now even his closest supporters see that this man of hate should no longer represent our Muslims.
Hilaly on the weekend filmed an appeal in Arabic for Wood's kidnappers to spare the life of the 63-year-old engineer, who had been bashed, shaved bald, and threatened with execution if coalition forces were not pulled out of Iraq.
Hilaly is a Sunni extremist, like the men believed to hold Wood, and in his appeal, broadcast in Iraq, he told them: "We value your jihad and your efforts."
But, he added: "We call upon you to do something for the sake of our community and all Australian society, which does not support (Prime Minister John) Howard's pro-American policies. You know the Australian forces in Iraq are protected by American forces and don't do anything -- it's all politics."
I can think of only one plausible way to read this -- our senior Islamic cleric values the terrorists who kill and kidnap countless victims, most of them Iraqis. And he wants Wood freed because killing him won't help Muslims here, most Australians already think Howard is a toady, and the real enemy is America.
Of course, excuses were immediately made for the Mufti, as they always are when he is discovered vilifying Jews or Americans, or praising suicide bombers and terrorists...

Well, of course he feels that the Iraqi's have the right to oppose the Occupation of their land by foreign invaders.
He is doing a service in that he is pointing out to the Iraqi resistance that killing this poor Australian will not change the mind of a pro-Invader Australian government that is bent on being a dog of a Superpower.

Interesting obfuscation.
Let's see Saddam was Sunni, his Mukhabarat, Republican Guard and army command was Sunni, his henchmen, the guys that pulled the triggers that filled the mass graves of Al Hilah and Erbil/Mosul were Tikriti or allied tribes of Sunnis.
Sunni's are 20% of the population, but ruled Iraq like forever.
The Shi'a and Kurds (60% and 20% of the population of Iraq) were victims of Sunni oppression and murder.
The Shi'a supported the depostion of Saddam as did the Kurd, leaving only 20% of the population (Sunni) that lost out by deposing Saddam and oppose the so called "occupation".
Were it not for the violence and Jihadi (including the Wahhabi inspired Jihad against the "mushrik" Shi'a whom happen to be the majority of targets, both in the Police, Guard and Mosques, there might be a chance to rebuild Iraq, and rebuild it's economy.
The Iraqi's want safety, but the Sunnni's and Ba'athist are giving them violence, kidnapping and murdering not just the Amriki and kufr from other lands, but even Iraqi's themselves.
The only people who want to get rid of the so called Occupiers are the wannabe religious and political fascists (Hitlers) who are behind the violence, the kidnappings, beheadings called (wrongly) resistance.
Of course the Shi'a (save for Al Sadr) would like to see the Kufr leave, but Not quite yet, not while there is sectarian civil war going on, a one sided one at that, since the Shi'a have not struck back at the Sunni's, Wahabbis and Ba'athists.

The Mufti has made comments supporting the Jihad in Iraq, at the same time that Australian troops are fighting and dying there. How come the Australian court system charged the Muslim converts/Christian pastors with hate speech and yet this Mufti is not hauled into court for his hate speech? Like so many other places in the world, Islam is a protected religion, subject to special kid-glove treatment.

Giaour - The ones who are carrying out the beheadings should be considered fundamentalists rather than fascists.
It's important to identify them properly - because if we don't - then any strategy contemplated to defeat them will be weakened.
The acts of those who are carrying out these crimes - claim they're doing so because they believe their allah commands them to.

Halaali himself has a fine record of hate-speeches, and he already cost us, the taxpayers a nice bundle. No, sorry to say:
So far he hasn't been put away for hate crimes.
To send him to Iraq to negotiate the release of a hostage is the dumbest thing this government could ever do: It's like giving the mafia-godfather a seat of honor in politics. This guy is not a simple criminal, he is a dyed in the wool Jihadi and he makes no beef about it. For the government of Australia to kowtow to him is shameful, ridiculous and utterly naive.
To elevate this halal-butcher to any public recognition is an insult to every Australian.

Shukri - maybe you didnt read al-Hilaly's original statement, in which he claims to speak 'for Australian society'.
"we value your jihad and your efforts and we call upon you to do something for the sake of our community and all Australian society, which does not support John Howard's pro-American policies".
Strange comment from someone supposedly trying to pour oil on troubled waters. The most retarded jihadist could easily work out that not even infidel Australians vote in a PM with whom they disagree. So this comment is divisive to say the least. This man does not speak for me, he does not speak for any Australian - he speaks for the Islamic community. Why, you may ask -
'such kidnappings reflected badly on the Australian Islamic community and "we should not bear the burden of political mistakes".
"We" being the Muslim community, not 'Australian society'.
As for Iraqis having the right to resist 'foreign invaders' - sure, but which foreign invaders do you mean? Do you mean the US and allied soldiers who brought down Saddam, or do you mean the hordes of foreign Muslims from all over the ME who have come to Iraq to kill Americans and behead helpless captives?
What would the young men who were murdered last week (while lining up for jobs as security guards and policemen) think - would they regard the Muslim extremists who killed them as 'foreign invaders', I wonder?
This repulsive little worm doesnt speak for me - what an insult.

He doesn't speak for me either, yet arrogantly assumes he does. Of course I want Wood to be freed safely, but not due to anything Hilaly does. The last thing I want to see is this criminal elevated to some hero status. He shouldn't even be in this country. Only due to some filthy backroom dealings by that revolting vote-whore Paul Keating are we stuck with this terrorist supporter. He was wanted for smuggling Egyptian antiquities, yet still managed to slime his way to Australian citizenship even with that black mark on his record. Yet all other migrants have to submit a clean character check to qualify for residency here. Hilaly makes me sick. I resent my tax money going to his support. May Keating rot in Hell when he finally gets there.
Maybe a car bomb will catch Hilaly while he's there. Just as long as he's the only casualty.
