The Brits say it never happened, but that isn't stopping the Iranians. "Iran honors would-be Rushdie assassin," from UPI, with thanks to Rogier Van Bakel:
Tehran, Iran, Jun. 8 (UPI) -- While Britain denies there ever was an attack, a grave marker in Tehran trumpets "the first martyr to die on a mission to kill Salman Rushdie" in London. The grave marker is for an unknown 21-year-old Lebanese man who went by the name Mustafa Mahmoud Mazeh. He died in London Aug. 3, 1989, when a book bomb he was assembling in a London hotel exploded.Rushdie had gone into hiding in England earlier in the year after Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, or death sentence, against him following the publication of "The Satanic Verses."
But British security services have never owned up to what they know of Mazeh, or given details of any assassination attempt against Rushdie in Britain, The Times of London said.
At an inquest in January 1990, Scotland Yard's anti-terrorist squad said there was only "a hint" that Mazeh belonged to a terrorist group, and his reason for being in London was "not clear."
Ah. Another one of those "Nothing to do with terrorism" terrorism cases. That bomb he was building was for his eighth-grade science project.

A "book bomb" to be sent to Rushdie, no doubt, as a review copy, with a fake publicist's insert: "Hoping you will enjoy this as much as we did."
But apparently the sender found, too late, that he himself just couldn't put it down.

Cher Hugh:
Indeed, Mustafa Mahmoud Mazeh couldn't put it down.
And just before the bomb went off, Mazeh read the publisher's ad copy on the back jacket of the book: "At last! A book that explodes the myth of Muslim tolerance!"
As ever

This really ticks me off. This pathetic denial of reality: that Islam is attacking the West. Yet Muslims have the gall to go around claiming they are being unfairly targeted and victimized! They're being unfairly & dangerously protected and coddled, is what is really happening. How many other Islamic attacks are being covered up?
And Timothy McVeigh is constantly brought up as an example of "Christian" extremism.

I guess the bungled assassin didn't understand that the same thing occurs with the Koran.
You open it, people tend to die.
Let's get the MI 5 to tell the world what book it was.
If it was the "Satanic Verses" ("Dear Mr. Rushdie, Would you please autograph my copy of your book?" ) -then we can at least know that the dark and savage humor in the work reached a perfect pitch (and poetic coup de grace) with this explosive incident.
A droll detail that should be added as an appendix in all future editions.
(And a warning about that other book which kills.)

Oh yeah, MI5, the geniuses who closed down their G7 Islamic unit after the Rushdie episode. No wonder comic novelists are feeling the pinch, they're really quite redundant these days.

"And Timothy McVeigh is constantly brought up as an example of "Christian" extremism."
The spastic reflex of Leftists (and Muslims -- not sure who is learning from whom) to bring up "um, what about McVeigh?" when Muslim terrorists are criticized outrageously ignores the disparity in statistics: Just taking the time since the McVeigh bombing, we have seen in various places all around the globe, hundreds of mass-murderous bombings, shootings, arsons, knifings and beheadings. We have not seen another McVeigh in that time.
The Leftist mind is incapable of arithmetic, apparently: Hundreds = One.

Accidentally blowing himself up for Allah, is not commendable. Death is not a valid excuse for failure in Allahs eye's. Allah expects better performance than that. Mazeh should have tried harder. A good jihadist fights not just to the death, but beyond death. Allah likes best, dead jihadists, who dont let being dead deter them from Allahs cause. The Iranians celebrating such a failure as Mazeh is not making Allah happy. He will punish them for their indiscretions.

This is the report in The Times which gives a lot more detail.

Mr Spencer, I thought I sent you this last night. I didn't, what I find I actually sent was an old story destined for a DW thread. Which is why my comment about the bounty would have made no sense. Sorry, and I'm glad that someone else also saw it.
If you read The Times version it says that the tomb is an empty one. Presumably he is buried in England somewhere.
At the time I thought that this would be the beginning of the "liberal left" coming to realise the truth about Islam after this attack on one of their darlings. How wrong I was.

Celebrating a failure seems a tad odd, doesn't it, especially at this late date?
But then not so long ago, Hamas claimed a murdered Palestinian teenager who was trying to help his family chase some rocket-launching terrorists off of the family farm as a martyr to the cause of pushing Israel into the sea.

Why are all Allahs-hole bombers so young? Suppose the older ones are afraid there is a true God that frounds on self destruction.

Ronduce:
I doubt it. Check out memri.org's archives if you don't believe me, but in the case of Palestinian bombers, at least, the parents encourage it as the pay-offs they receive for martyred children vastly outstrip any aid they might get otherwise and they have very large families. The mothers are also celebrated for having produced bombers.
