I recall reading that Thailand has a history of not putting up with this BS and coming down hard and I mean hard on the Islamists. That Thailand had never been conquered by anyone and that the Thais are highly defensive and aggressive against Islamic jihad.

Apparently, all those dhimmis - human rights groups, AI, EU, etc. have cowed Thailand after that nasty counterattack where a bunch of Muslims died. You remember those multicolored paper cranes they dropped over the Muslim south to represent 'good will'? You know how the Muslims took that - weakness not reconciliation. Asked if he would resign if the Volcker panel determines that he withheld information, Annan said he would not respond to a speculative question except to say that he has told investigators everything.

Dagestan Minister Killed in Explosion

Minister of national policy, information and external relations of Dagestan, Zagir Arukhov, was killed in an explosion in the republic’s capital of Makhachkala.

The explosion took place Friday evening near a nine-storey house in the capital of the Russian internal republic. The minister’s car was blown up. Arukhov died at the scene.

It was earlier reported on one killed and several injured in the explosion. A local policeman quoted by Interfax reported fragments of at least one body were found at the scene.

Lawyer of Chechen Zara Murtazaliyeva jailed for preparation of terrorist attack has appealed the sentence against her.

On January 17, Moscow City Court sentenced 21-year-old Murtazaliyeva to nine years of prison for preparing terrorist attack, involving other people in a terrorist plot and illegal acquisition and storage of explosives.

On March 17, the Supreme Court reduced her jail term to 8.5 years after the prosecutors’ request according to the changes in the Criminal Code.

The lawyer Vladimir Suvorov addressed the Supreme Court presidium and intends to register an appeal into the European Court of Human Rights. He called Murtazaliyeva’s case “fully falsified” and the sentence reduction a “mockery.”

The court found Murtazaliyeva intended to explode an escalator in Okhotny Riad trade complex in the center of Moscow. She also was charged with psychological training of Darya Vorontsova and Anna Kulikova to help her commit the crime. The court rejected a theory that police had jolted Murtazaliyeva 196 grams of explosives.

The woman was detained in Moscow in March 2004. The investigation told she was trained in a terrorist camp

Russia Remembers Victims of Basayev Raid on Budyonnovsk

Budyonnovsk, a small town in south Russia, is marking the 10th anniversary of the Chechen rebel raid on its hospital where thousands of people were taken hostage in June 1995.

Residents lit candles in their homes in memory of the tragic events their town witnessed a decade ago. Local churches held memorial services on Monday and Tuesday.

On Tuesday mourning ceremonies were held across Budyonnovsk, with people laying wreaths at monuments to local police officers who were the first to confront the militants as the gang stormed into the city, dressed in Russian army uniforms.

Budyonnovsk residents also paid homage to the doctors and local residents who opposed the rebels as they tried to help hostages.

Back in June 1995, notorious Chechen leader Shamil Basayev led a troop of rebels into Budyonnovsk where they captured a large hospital and took over 1,800 people hostage, demanding a cease-fire, an end to the war and the withdrawal of Russian forces from Chechnya.

After fighting in which more than a hundred hostages were killed, Basayev and his men were allowed to retreat safely back to Chechnya. Basayev and his men then escaped back into Chechnya, using some hostages as human shields.

Basayev has claimed responsibility for many of Russia’s most dramatic terror attacks in recent years, including last September’s hostage seizure at a school in the southern town of Beslan
