At root, it is a problem of authority -- to which authority are young French Muslims listening? "RPT-Anti-riot fatwa sparks feud among French Muslims," from Reuters, with thanks to Ricky:
PARIS, Nov 7 (Reuters) - France's main Muslim organisations feuded on Monday over a fatwa one group issued against rioting after officials suggested Islamist militants might be fanning unrest across the country.The Union of French Islamic Organisations (UOIF), a large group linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, quoted the Koran and the Prophet Mohammad to support the religious edict issued late on Sunday condemning the chaos and destruction the unrest caused.
But Dalil Boubakeur, head of France's Muslim Council and rector of the moderate Grand Mosque of Paris, denounced the move on Monday as equating Islam with vandalism and blaming all Muslims for the rioting whether they were involved or not.
"It is formally forbidden to any Muslim seeking divine grace and satisfaction to participate in any action that blindly hits private or public property or could constitute an attack on someone's life," the UOIF fatwa said.
"Contributing to such exactions is an illicit act," declared the edict, which said it was applicable to "any Muslim living in France, whether a citizen or a guest of France."
The rioters are mostly French-born youths of Arab or African origin, many of them Muslim, who say racial bias condemns them to unemployment in the rundown suburbs around main cities. France's 5 million Muslims make up 8 percent of the population.
SURPRISE AND REGRET
The sight of imams and local Muslim leaders in the suburbs calming down angry teenagers who reject all other authority has prompted French officials to warn that Islamic extremists might exploit a power vacuum to gain control over some suburbs.
Boubakeur, a political ally of President Jacques Chirac, said "many Muslims are surprised and regret that, in these dramatic and reprehensible circumstances, some Muslim organisations such as the UOIF think they can invoke God's name in a call for calm.
"We urge strict respect for French law," he said in a pointed jab at the UOIF for not mentioning law in its fatwa.

Finally, after ten days of rioting, with 300 cities scenes of attacks, the supposedly "good" Muslims offer a fatwa. The adverb "blindly" is big enough, as the comment suggests, to allow for all sorts of attacks -- if they are not "blind" but directed at, say, American or Israeli or English or Australian embassies or consulates or citizens. That might be okay. Wasn't in former Prime Minister Raymond Barre who said of a previous MUslim attack in Paris that some "innocents" were killed along with the intended (Jewish) targets, implyng that there were right, and wrong, victims of such attacks. this was the reason the attack should be condemn.
This fatwa is terrible in another way. Accepting it, indeed welcoming it, means that the French govenrment now becomes complicit in the notion that Muslims can tell Muslims what to do, even Muslim "citizens of France." But that should be rejected. The fatwa-issuers do not have the right to tell Muslim citizens of France how to behave, even if in this particular case they are telling them that, at this point, with France not yet as far gone demographically as it will be in a decade or two, they should cool it form they are damaging the only thing that counts to thise fatwa-issuers, which is to say, the present and future well-being of Islam. In that respect, they are no different from those whose behavior they claim to regulate; both want the same ultimate aim. The rioting Muslims want to seize the Infidel property, or the positions in society, to which as Muslims they believe themselves entitled, that they do not have to earn. In the end, the goal of the fatwa-issuers is not different: they would like to ensure not merely the survival of Islam in France and the rest of Western Europe, but its ultimate dominance.
In this respect, the rioters are akin to Hamas and Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah, and the fatwa-issuers akin to Mahmoud Abbas. Same goal, different means. The Fast Jihad of open threats and aggression, the Slow Jihad of all the other instruments of Jihad, including the soothing words, and make-believe cool-it message of this fatwa.

I would add that this is a perfect example of how justified Westerners are to be so suspicious of ALL Muslims in their midst... These are the two sides of the self-same coin of Islam...
These so-called "moderates" aren't saying "STOP RIOTING BECAUSE THESE ARE THE LAWS OF FRANCE, OUR ADOPTED COUNTRY!" They are simply furthering the notion that Muslims must control and regulate what Muslim do and think -- outside whatever the laws of France might say...
Why don't Muslims recognize the laws of their adopted lands as being paramount?
The false dichotomy of "radical" and "moderate" Muslim is simply describing two face of the coin of Islam --
Their actions prove confusing to our Western sensibilities. We can hardly imagine what "purpose" this all might serve, and are inclined to try to fit it into some Western framework -- poverty, racism, oppression...
We are silent while Muslims transgress against our laws -- We are silent while they undermine our culture and subvert our government... We are silent while they demand concessions from us, we silently listen to their never ending stream of vitriol, hatred, and criticism of our superior systems of governance... WHY?
I always say:
Islam works.
Destruction works.
Terrorism works.
Violence works.
Intolerance works.
Totalitarianism works.
These are Islam's tools, and they form a potent poison which secular democracy may not be able to endure -- the imagined separation between "moderates" and "radicals" among Muslim is a false separation -- And here is one of the brilliant gems of Islam -- One represents hot and one represents cold -- but both exert an expansion and contraction on the target society which eventually opens fissures of collapse and destruction...
Through the insidious actions of Jihad:
If the "radicals" prevail, they will have seized power through their violence, and shown an ability to threaten and destroy peace in France... Their actions will effectively diminished the power of un-Muslim France.
If, on the other hand, this so-called fatwa banning riots prevails, then the "moderates" will have exerted their influence over the rioters, and gained power and thereby diminished the power of un-Muslim France.
Either one side of the coin or the other will gain by this insurrection, and France can only lose... And we can see how BOTH sides of the coin of Islam exposes the un-Muslim constituency to the poisons of their respective Islam... both sides of Islam's coin gains and the host society of France loses...
Surrender or die... This is the way of Islam...

Imams are notorious for publicly issuing fatwas when their Muslim thugs are put in the put in the spotlight for commiting crimes in their host countries while secretly telling the same Muslim thugs to destroy France. Deception. The jihadist tool of war is now in play.

Allowing the Mulla's to play a role in calming the young revolting Muslims down, only increases the power and influence of Islam.
They are complaining of being discriminated against, yet unlike every other French infidel, they won't listen to the French authorities. Isn't this being discriminating and exclusive? The very thing they are complaining of? And the dumb French politicians play right into their hands.
