UK: 'Terror tape' given out at mosque

Good news: it looks as if mosque members brought this to the attention of authorities. From the BBC, with thanks to Greg:

Police have launched an investigation into claims that video tapes and DVDs handed out at mosques in Dewsbury were being used to recruit terrorists.

The tapes, purporting to contain readings from the Koran, were given to Muslims attending two mosques in Savile Town during the weekend's Eid festival.

Local resident Safiq Patel said: "When people played them they realised they were violent jihad videos."

West Yorkshire Police confirmed they were studying one of the tapes.

Mr Patel told BBC News: "These tapes were left at points of public access in the reception areas of the mosques.

"People picked them up thinking they were prayers or readings from the Koran.

"They were shocked to find messages of jihad. It is someone trying to drum up violence, especially among the younger members of the community.

"Somebody is trying to infiltrate their consciences, decision-making and values in the hope of perhaps recruiting the terrorists of the future from this community."

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Members of the local Asian community have brought to our attention these matters.

"On Tuesday we received a copy of the video which is being looked at to establish whether it contains material which would incite violence, racial hatred or acts of terrorism."

Nice, glad to hear that maybe some "moderate" Muslims are doing something to try to create a positve image of themselves other than bashing the west and telling us how intolerant we are. On the other hand, going on any Muslim website seems to indicate that a many Muslims in the west still love that "Old time religion." Here is a nice little example: http://ummah.com/forum/showthread.php?t=69006

This is indeed good news that not all Muslims want to go on Jihad and explode themselves and others in the hope of shagging 72 virgins in Paradise. Of course the BBC only reports 'good incidents' leaving out or editing those which show Islam in an unfavourable light. They [BBC} are certainly deaf & blind when it comes to reporting what happens to Copts in Egypt, Buddhist monks or Christian Schoolgirls in Indonesia.

"Somebody is trying to infiltrate their consciences, decision-making and values in the hope of perhaps recruiting the terrorists of the future from this community." I truly wonder whom that "somebody" is ? Could it be.....Satan and his minions of darkness?.....You can count on it.It is encouraging, however ,that these muslims spoke up,it shows that there is hope.

This has to be one of the most positive stories I've heard in some time. If Muslims root out the jihadis the need for special legislation and other measures will fade away.

It is nearly impossible for those outside the community to do the kind of policing which is necessary to avoid extreme measures.

Credit to the individuals who stepped forward and brought this to the attention of the authorities.

This brings up the point that Mosques must be in held accountable for material on their premises. It is their responsibility to ensure literature, videios, etc. don't contravene the law of the land. So all mosques and these two in particular need to put processes in place to ensure no material is distributed that hasn't gone thru a screening process and approved by the mosque authorities.

"Naples’s Grand Mosque to be Built

10/26/2005

--Local Muslim leaders are in the process of purchasing a two-storey palazzo in central Naples to turn into the city's 'grand mosque', siad adnki.com.

Of the many buildings bought to date by Italy's Muslim community, the palazzo's 1.5 million euro price-tag will make it the second most expensive so far, after the 40 million euro Rome mosque, which was almost entirely financed by Saudi Arabia.

Most of the other buildings purchased by the Muslim community, such as those housing the Padova and Turin mosques in northern Italy, have cost no more than 500,000 euros. And given the likely costs of refurbishing the two-storey palazzo, the total cost of Naples' ''grand mosque' could amount to far more than the 1.5 million euro purchase price.

In recent days, the imams of Naples' Campania region have held meetings in the city's Corso Lucci mosque to tell worshippers about the moves to purchase the palazzo, and to a plan major fund-raising drive for the 67,000 euro deposit on the property which has to be paid by the end of November.

The imams hope the Muslim festival marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan will be a good time to raise money for Naples 'grand mosque'. After an earlier plan initiated by the Campania region's planning councillor, Marco di Lello, to build a mosque in Naples' Ponticelli district fell through, the city's Muslims are determined to obtain a premises themselves."

You know -- this kind of thing happens in Temples and Churches ALL the time -- so we shouldn't jump to conclusions!

Oh wait -- I forgot to run "FACT" check -- scratch the first part of that sentence altogether...

Instead, please read "With all the tiresome evidence that terrorism seems to dog Muslim heels the world over, it's reasonable and fair to jump to conclusions about the link between Islam and terrorism..."

That's more like it -- I like being factual when I post...
