Al-Arian walk watch: I think the Rumpled Academic is very close to walking, and thereby handing the jihadists and their fellow travelers in the U.S. a decisive victory. Why? Well, if the jury can't make a decision in nine days, I don't think a conviction is imminent. On the other hand, maybe I will be proven wrong: the fact that the defense is still angling for a mistrial may indicate that they don't think good news is in the offing. From AP, with thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist:
TAMPA, Fla. - As jurors in the terrorism conspiracy trial of former University of South Florida professor Sami Al-Arian deliberated for a ninth day Wednesday, the judge denied a defense motion for a mistrial filed last week. The motion by attorneys for Al-Arian and three co-defendants stemmed from jurors inadvertently seeing the results of a reader's poll printed in the Tampa Tribune Nov. 17. The poll showed that 87 percent of the readers who responded thought the jury would convict Al-Arian of being a key figure in the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
Although the poll was not cut out of newspapers provided to jurors as other articles about the trial have been, U.S. District Judge James S. Moody Jr. said in an order that he didn't think the exposure "created unfair prejudice" to the defendants.
The jury of six men and six women is deciding whether Al-Arian and the others are guilty of raising money to support the mission of the PIJ, a terrorist group blamed for hundreds of deaths in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

If he walks on all 51 counts, can we assume that we have some type of mental breakdown in the Florida region?
I can't see him walking on all counts, but then again, it depends on the jury. This guy is dirty, and the nation knows it. Hopefully the jury will agree and send this rat away.

Either way, there's gonna be an interesting backwash from this one. As the scope of Jihad expands in America, this case will likely stand as a bellwether for how caught Jihadists are handled in many criminal proceedings to come. It's got all the elements: palm treed campus, college professor, pathological liars, anti-Americanism, terror fundraising, Jihad recruitment... the works.

I hope that Al Arian gets nailed for a life sentence and the CAIR crowd steps on its Johnson with a sustained PR campaign to clear his name.
On the other hand, if he's let off, look for the Tim Russert crowd to be doing back-flips trying to explain how things haves slipped and gone a flaccid since September 11, 2001.

"If he walks on all 51 counts, can we assume that we have some type of mental breakdown in the Florida region?"
Perhaps it merely means there is a fellow muslim on the jury.

OR, it could mean with FIFTY ONE counts, the jury is being thorough in their deliberations.
Large groups are notoriously inefficient at making decisions. Witness our Congress!

No! Don't Witness our Congress! Separation of Church and State, remember?
(sorry... just had to take advantage of that line)
I do think they are being thorough about this. I recall something from earlier this year, which also ran at least 5 days... and the person involved was convicted on all counts.

If Al-Aryan walks, there IS NO GOD.
If he goes to prison, I get religious. Remember my bet, Gary?

While I think kj is being a little bit extreme, if al-arian walks, it will make me lose all faith in the American judicial system, and it's pretty broken (both my faith in, and the judicial system itself) right now. Now, I could sit here and blame the liberals, but I know some people here wouldn't like that. So I'll sit here and be quiet, while we watch our great nation go to crap. God bless political correctness.

kj:
I don't know if there's a God or gods, or none, but for sure if there is a Divine One, he/she isn't a micromanager. If Al-Arian walks it's because Justice isn't blind, it's brain-dead.

Al-Arian jurors deliberate for ninth day; judge denies mistrial
Oh dear. I read that as 'judge denies mistral', which makes no sense at all.
It's late here. Time for bed.

Take, for instance, this character here named "IslamicRapper." He thinks he can just throw quotes out there from the koran, and we're just supposed to go "OH, I hadn't read that," or, "what, I didn't know it said that!" Idiot, everyone on this board that is against islam has not only read the koran, but the hadith as well, and not only that, have done some scholarly research into islam. We are not, like muslims are, blind haters. We know what we fight against. It's been awhile since I've read it, but I believe Sun Tzu said "know thy enemy." But this "IslamicRapper" is one who thinks that we will accept that "Islam=Peace" simply because he says so. But then he will say, "no, study for yourself, and don't believe the way the media portrays muslims and islam," not even paying attention that our media is in the hands of islamists. But he then assumes that we haven't studied islam, and based on what? That we are not muslim. That's it. Muslims assume that they are so right, that anyone who simply reads the koran, or studies a little of islam, will be utterly convinced of it's truthfulness. Instead, what normally happens, is that those who look into islam, are utterly appalled at what they find writen in their vile koran. They think that because the majority is blind and dumb to what islam really is, or just doesn't want to do anything about it, that us, the minority, will just accept that we have supposedly been defeated. But this is not the case. We have studied islam, not only from a religious standpoint, but also political, psychological, historical, etc., and we know what islam is about. It's a vile, evil, hateful, satanic cult of death, that is the sole reason why there is not peace wherever a muslim resides. It's time the world sees islam for what it is, and stands up against it.

Islamic Rapper, baby don't cry.
I hate to see you with them
tears in your eye.
I think you need
to look up the word "Abeed"
because it means "Black"
In Arabic
It also means "slave"
though you rant and rave
it's the same today
it hasn't changed
it's still the same
Mohammed had slaves,
in and out of his bed
he liked to call them
Raisinheads
and said Satan looked
like a black slave
It isn't me,
it's history
look it up and see
so before you call others kafirs,
remember
Mohammed had his niggas

You call that a rap?
It sounds like crap!
Now don't get pissed
you done got dissed
you won't be missed
talk to the hand
not the fist
yo're history baby

If he doesn't get convicted in these courts he'll probably be convicted in other courts with much higher penalties.

Generally speaking, long deliberations are bad for the prosecution, true. But 51 counts could be another reason. Convicting someone on 35 counts, just the process, takes a long time.

"I read that as 'judge denies mistral', which makes no sense at all."
-- from a posting above
Perhaps Gabriella Mistral decided to gtive back, as a embarrassment to her own modest talent, her Nobel Prize for Literature, but the Swedish judge (there was only one in those days) wouldn't let her return it to "Gifts and Exchanges."
Perhaps at the Cour d'Assizes in Aix, on the Boulevard Roi Rene, or is it the Cours Mirabeau -- the lawyer pleading the case for a defendant in a complicated case said he would need extra time, and could the judge please grant an extension because that very morning, when he opened the windows, a particularly fierce wind had rushed in and with a whoosh blown all of his client's case, hundreds of documents, thousands of pages, hither and yon about the room and some pages even flew out the window. The judge, who knew a thing or two about the weather, and before he had been elevated had been a noted criminal defense lawyer famous for "knowing which way the wind was blowing," denied that the mistral in fact had blown that day.
"No sense"? Would that be hyperbolic exaggeration, my favorite kind, the reverse of that litotic understatement we hear so much, too much, about?
