Official: Al-Zarqawi caught, released

A Keystone Kops Alert from Iraq via CNN, with thanks to John:

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraqi security forces caught the most wanted man in the country last year, but released him because they didn't know who he was, the Iraqi deputy minister of interior said Thursday.

Hussain Kamal confirmed that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi -- the al Qaeda in Iraq leader who has a $25 million bounty on his head -- was in custody at some point last year, but he wouldn't provide further details.

A U.S. official couldn't confirm the report, but said he wouldn't dismiss it.

"It is plausible," he said.

But can we be sure those who caught really didn't know?

Note to Duh_Swami~ There are 47 listings for 'Balaam' on eBay, and at least one of them involves a donkey.

FWIW, my personal opinion is that the Iraqi squads that captured Zarqawi let him go,when they figured out who he was. Out of sympathy with the cause, out of fear of retaliation..it doesn't matter.

Gary as regards George Wills drilling in Anwar piece.

That oil is heavy, in sulphur, and expensive to distill, not like the sweet crude that is imported and used.

Further, from all appearances, the plans are for the Oil companies to export the oil to Japan and Asia, not use it for domestic purposes.

I would like to see guarantees and severe trillion dollar penalties against the oil companies if one drop of that oil is exported.
