Canada: Hizballah clones cellphones of corporation execs

"Terror group cloned cellphones of Rogers execs," from CTV.ca News, with thanks to Sr. Soph:

A group linked to terrorist organization Hezbollah has cloned the cellphones of Rogers Communications executives, including that of CEO Ted Rogers, The Globe and Mail reported Saturday.

Cloning involves duplicating a cellphone's number and encrypted security code.

The story came to light after law professor Susan Drummond returned from a month-long trip abroad, only to find her Rogers cellphone bill was more than $12,000, The Globe reported.

The Rogers Wireless bill listed more than 300 calls made in the month of August, some to foreign countries, including Pakistan, Libya, Syria, India and Russia.

When Drummond called about the bill, she was told she would have to pay it -- and that prompted her and her partner, Harry Gefen, to begin researching the cellphone giant.

In September, Gefen attended the Toronto Fraud Forum -- an annual conference for security experts -- where he spoke to Cindy Hopper, a manager in Rogers security department.

She told him that terror groups had repeatedly cloned cellphones of Rogers executives to make thousands of calls overseas, The Globe reported.

Hopper also terror groups had identified Rogers executives as perfect targets because the company would be reluctant to shut off their phones due to inconvenience to busy executives.

Naturally no one will be charged; no one will be extradited and no one will go to gaol and ..Islam will not be mentioned nor will Iran

The miserable b*****s cannot even be bothered to spend all that money they get from islamic charities to finace their attacks upon Israel and the west on their phone calls.

Naturally seeing as we are all in the total war zone(except the Muslim states of course) this is simply another act of war and very typical of Islam which not only loves to use your people against you but also to use your money to finance their attacks.

And we worry about violating the civil rights of these criminal citizens???

Is Canada still using "analog technology" as the switch to "digital" eliminated the cloning problem.

"Islam will not be mentioned..."

This so infuriates me!!! Will George and Condi look the other way, yet again, on this one?

Anyone up for dealing with the bully on the block? When they were bothered by bullies at school or in the neighborhood, I taught my children to punch them in the face, as hard as they could, really fast. This was not the PC school officials way but it was very effective in getting those damned bullies to stop picking on my kids.

Are we being told, yet again, that this is an extremist problem, not an Islamic problem? The signs are screaming at us, folks. How can we slam them back hard, before it is too late?

Why Rogers' execs? Who targeted the Rogers people? And might not Susan Drummond's phone bill be used to trace those numbers called to Pakistan, Libya, Syria, India and Russia to track down this scum? What are the area codes? And who are these people calling in Russia?

I especially liked this part

the company would be reluctant to shut off their phones due to inconvenience to busy executives.

The cluelessness of the world is astounding.

Apparently Rogers security dropped the ball. Security manager Hoppers job should be on the chopping block. Someone with a sophisticated scanner stood outside the offices of Rogers and gathered up the cell signals to be used for cloning. Rogers security had to have seen the unusual traffic on their phones but apparently elected to do nothing because they where afraid of bad publicity. Cell phone cloning has been going on for almost 10 years and cost the industry more than a million dollars a day. The question is; what efforts if any has Rogers made to track these phones?

Rogers Wireless is keeping silent because of the inconvience, and the money that's pouring in. what they're doing is financing terror, plain and simple.

The Canadian people need to realize that every cent going to Rogers Wireless means a cent going for terrorist activities against them. If Rogers Wireless thinks that having their cell phones cloned is bad PR, wait till terror strikes in Canada and the terrorists are found to have used phones paid for by Rogers Wireless.

learjet0450:

Canada switched to digital about the same time as the U.S. and uses essentially the same technology (e.g. Bell and Telus use CDMA - I'm not sure what Rogers uses now). The fourth callphone provider in Canada (which Rogers bought recently) used GSM technology which is common in Europe and many parts of Asia.

Only in Canada?
Is this not happening at all in the USA?
Oh, so that's why the media are having a field day with the NYT exposure of the NSA.

Rogers has a robust second-generation mobile telephone Authentication Center in both its ANSI-41/TDMA network and its GSM network. No U.S., South American, European, or Asian service provider has a more reliable system. I know because I helped implement it a few years ago. While not perfect, these systems significantly raise the bar against cloning fraud.

Just like a good padlock, though, it only works if you use it properly. I can think of a couple ways this theft of service may have happened. One possibility is internal fraud. Someone working at Rogers with access to the security information could have provided it to the bad guys. Another possibility is that the Rogers executives' cellphone accounts could have had their security features disabled, perhaps to avoid the inconvenience caused by the occasional auhentication challenge failure and the resulting denial of service.

It's also possible that this is all BS and disgruntled customer Gefen is misquoting Hopper, if she indeed exists at all. What is Rogers official statement regarding this? Somehow the Globe doesn't pursue this angle. Why would Hopper tell this story to a customer? It all sounds very suspicious.
