SELF-APPOINTED Muslim religious figures would be named and shamed and young followers warned away from them as part of a push to weed out extremist Islamic teachings in Australia.Moderate leader Yasser Soliman yesterday backed the need to regulate and censor Muslim clerics, saying there was growing concern that Muslims "having read a few books in their back yard" were too often claiming "they're somehow sheiks, or imams, or clerics".
Under a plan being devised by moderate Muslim leaders -- and revealed in The Australian yesterday -- a new national board of imams would register clerics and set guidelines for religious figures, including setting qualification levels.
Under the plan, which has angered clerics such as Melbourne's hardline Sheik Mohammad Omran, sermons could also be monitored by the board.
The head of John Howard's Muslim Advisory Council, Ameer Ali, told The Australian that followers of the radical imams would be "told these whom they are following are not telling the right interpretation of Islam, and that's not what Islam is all about".
Dr Ali warned that clerics who failed to comply with the guidelines, which will be thrashed out at a national meeting of Muslim leaders next month, would be publicly identified.
"If the majority of the imams and the leaders are moderates and have to turn to set guidelines, then those who want to stay in the periphery will be identified," said Dr Ali, president of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils.

Would this regulation also make it more difficult for a real sweeping "reformer", of the type Jeffrey Imm expects, to appear on the moslem scene?

This is doomed to failure. One of several options is going to happen:
1. There will be a deadlock on what the guidelines are to be. The conference will either then issue nothing or issue some vague meaningless guidelines.
2. Guidelines will be issued, but contain the typical taqiyya phrases that make them dangerous to the unsuspecting infidels. Again, nothing is achieved.
3. The "radicals" gain the upperhand at the conference and the "moderates" are left supporting guidelines that show the true Islam.
4. The "moderates" get what they want and guidelines are issued that renounce jihad and call for tolerance. One of two things happen here:
a.) The council is silently and slowly taken over by the "radicals" who now have the cover of a "moderate" Islamic organization.
b.) The "radicals" still go about their business and since they are willing to use force, intimidate the "moderates" into silence.
I'm curious to see what the "right" interpretation of Islam turns out to be.

I Hope and pray this in not another 'Taquiyya'game, they usually play in the West. CAIR is foremost in this techneique. If the Australian muslim Youth are sincere in this effort,it will benefit the Muslim community the most,and they will be setting an example to other Muslims in Non-Muslim countries,who have almost lost their respect and dignity ,due to their ploting against the very country that accomodates and feeds them.

I’m not convinced this is genuine, in fact I feel kind of a sense of doom when I read this.
Australia’s moderate muslims are obviously less physically violent.
But in my examination none the less extreme in their view of islam’s need for excessive rights. They say it politely and subtly.
I feel to give any body of muslims power here is a mistake. I honestly think it’s a smoke screen, the general public hear the clerics and by and large can detect for themselves how shocking and what mad cranks they are. Shaming them is fine, but fairly useless, (dangerous even if they dive underground) unless it’s backed with legislation to deport (maybe our new sedation laws are set for this).
I am concerned that Aussies will assume the problem is over once if stop seeing the hate-clerics on telly and let down their guard in the name trusting these moderates blindly in a desperate grasp for peace.
Aussies after Cronulla (which has been huge for us here) are just getting their nerve up to speak about islam, and defend themselves against its claims we’re all white supremacists here. The whole debate has shifted a gear or two and is now disregarding Political Correctness and asking more core questions.
The Cronulla Multicult riots have shown us our police are in terror. Muslim violence ran out of control for a week. One of the Anglo rioters is apparently now in hiding from death threats.
The prominent moderates have been the ones who have piously blamed Aussies for the whole Cronulla multicult riots, they are the ones who ask for more understanding/social security/rights etc for the muslim youth on rampages of Anglo-hate crime. Also some even have said it’s the Christian Lebanese / Italians and Greeks rebelling with the muslims, this is just not true… I could go on and on with the garbage they say and promote.
While its true and good this may lead to less recruitments to the Violent Jihad, it will also force it protectively underground and in that way strengthen its unity and intention all the more.
What I can see it doing is giving so called “moderate” islam the ability to separate itself from the obvious and strident extremism and therefore empower itself. This would be fine if it was an integrating Australian accepting moderism, but its defiantly not.

So, what is a moderate version? The side that is being attacked will simply state it is how they view the "true" koran, etc.
Smoke and mirrors..
In the u.s., if they believe they are "better" than you, give them a boat ride to where thay are equal.

Meredith, excellent post, I agree with "American", that this is a smoke screen. The forceful response of the Aussies youth, in retaliation to the the Muslim attacks on the beaches, and the small relative weakness of their numbers in your country, has forced them to try deception and delay.
You should not be fooled by that! It is deception... deception... deception
Force their hand a bit more, openly be critical of their religion and way of life, Publish pictures of Mohammed on the cover of magazines like the Danish have. It will force their "Taquiyya' game" out into the open and the violence of their response even from so-called moderates will shock the Aussies public.
The best weapon you have, is their violent response to even the softist of verbal attacks about so many aspects of their idiology and of Islam & Mo
If you can't get your media to do the above, then print and put up all over your city posters. Get the word out about Islam and at the same time don't let them cool it down because I fear it will help them in the long run.
Just imagine when their numbers are as great as France and England, them their response will not be "Taguiyya: at all but the burning of whole neighborhoods.
Please let me know hoe it goes and I will spread the message to as many people I know in New York,

They are going to be moderate muslims like Tariq Ramadan. The fact as that these anti-islamism conferences always find jews behind it, blame the jew, declare further hostility to the jews for the alleged wrongdoing they come up with, and then declare the problem will be solved with help fighting the jew.

meredith, I'm with you, except that I am totally, unequivocally convinced this is NOT genuine at all. These so-called "moderates" make a false show of not liking the so-called "extremists" for our benefit, because the "extremists" are giving the game away too soon. It's not time yet. The "moderates" want to go slowly, and are happy to lie and trick us for as long as it takes. They'd rather get in via the backdoor, get in politicians' good books, fool as many people as possible, boiling the frog slowly until it's cooked. The "extremists" don't have that patience. They want it now and don't have the skill or desire of subterfuge and treachery like their so-called "moderate" brethren. They are all the same: dangerous, with the same hellish agenda.
It's sickening how these so-called "moderates" have blamed Australians for the Cronulla riots, happy to jump on the PC bandwagon, ignoring the root causes. The left is always so quick to jump to making excuses for their Islamic pals when they do atrocious things, looking for "root causes", but when non-Muslims have enough and hit back, they don't look for root causes. No, it's because we're white hood wearing, cross-burning racists. Of course, the taqiyya-merchant Muslims are happy to nod in agreement with this assessment, because it hides the real facts - that Islam is the most racist of all and that the Cronulla riots were because of Islam's inherent deep-rooted racism, hatred, intolerance and pure evil.
