Seven British citizens had acquired "most of the necessary components" to launch a bombing campaign in the UK, the Old Bailey has heard.Opening the prosecution case, David Waters QC said police intervened before the men could decide on a target.
All seven deny conspiring to cause life-endangering explosions between January 2003 and April 2004.
Three of the men also deny storing half a ton of fertiliser, which could be used in bomb-making, in west London.
The ammonium nitrate fertiliser was recovered after police searched a storage unit....
On the first day of the trial, Mr Waters told the jury the plot was stopped before it could "reach fruition"....
The bomb, or bombs, would have been used "at the very least to destroy strategic plant within the United Kingdom, or more realistically to kill and injure citizens of the UK," he claimed.
Earlier, the judge, Sir Michael Anstill, told the jury they must "put aside" their opinions on terrorism....
Why?
Omar Khyam, 24, and his brother Shujah Mahmood, 19 - both from Crawley in West Sussex - each deny possessing aluminium powder.Mr Khyam, Anthony Garcia (also known as Rahman Adam), 23, of Ilford, east London, and Nabeel Hussain, 20, of Horley, Surrey, each deny possession of the ammonium nitrate fertiliser.
The other accused are Salahuddin Amin, 31, from Luton, Bedfordshire, and Waheed Mahmood, 34, and Jawad Akbar, 22, both from Crawley.
Hmmm. Omar, Shujah, Rahman, Nabeel, Salahuddin, Waheed, and Jawad. Doubtless Methodists to a man.

Yesterday in JW we saw the story Ahmadinejad: Iran will stick to nuclear plans which quoted Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad saying:
They were saying that this (oil) smelt bad and is useless and you don't need it.
Now we know why their oil smelt bad, it was the fertilizer they were mixing it with.
As far as the names go, at least the BBC is (kind of) doing their job and giving us the information and letting us draw our own conclusions about their motivation. The stories I've seen, they usually just say "Seven Britons...", or maybe "Seven Asians..." and leave it at that.

Four of these guerilla gardeners were from my old manor, creepy Crawley - where Bakri used to train his al-muhajiroun kiddies in Tilgate Scout hut. Everyone knew, the police, the council, there was a tv documentary devoted to them (ooh what a lovely Jihad!) so even the Home Office must've known. Everyone, apart from their moderate friends and families who financed their "adventure holidays" to AQ training camps. Yet the security services seemed oblivious.
Thank God, they seem to have "blown their cover" & caught MI5's attention by buying gardening supplies.

Spain charges 32 over terror plot
A Spanish judge has charged 32 suspected Islamic militants over an alleged plot to blow up the National Court in Madrid.

How illuminating and accurate is WINSTON CHURCHILLS description of Islam.

We should not be too much in a hurry to detect pro-Muslim prejudice everywhere. Earlier, the judge, Sir Michael Anstill, told the jury they must "put aside" their opinions on terrorism...., says the article, and Robert asks Why? Well, Robert, because that is what every judge says to every jury at the start of every trial in England. It is pure judicial boilerplate, and amounts to saying that they should judge the case before them on its merits. It is a principle of English law, and the reason why previous convictions of accused men are not disclosed to the jury. It has nothing to do with Islamic terrorism any more than it has to do with IRA terrorism, drugs running, prostitution, or shoplifting, on all of which it has been repeated by every foolish or clever person with a horsehair wig in the last several centuries of English history.
