3rd day of clashes in Egypt

Egyptian officials have blamed the attacks on "extremists" and also on a "deranged man." Well, which is it? And why can't they control their extremists and deranged man? Could it be because many in the government are in sympathy with such forces? "Sectarian tensions flare in Egypt," from the BBC, with thanks to JE:

Muslims and Coptic Christians have clashed for a third day in Alexandria, Egypt, after a Coptic worshipper was stabbed to death in church.

The latest skirmishes broke out near one of three churches attacked by armed men on Friday, reports said.

At least one person has died in violence since the stabbing.

Egyptian officials have blamed the attacks on extremists, but Coptic Christians say the government is not doing enough to protect them.

Sunday's violence erupted shortly after a religious service ended at the Saints Church, the Associated Press news agency reported.

About 2,000 riot police cordoned off the front of the church after about 200 men left the building carrying crosses, clubs and machetes, the agency said.

A Muslim man injured in clashes the previous day has died in hospital, medical sources said.

Saturday's violence followed the funeral of Nushi Atta Girgis, 78, who died in one of three knife attacks on Friday.

Mourners shouted anti-government slogans as the funeral procession - attended by an estimated 3,000 people - turned into a protest outside the church where the funeral was held.

Police fired tear gas and tried to separate the groups, who threw stones and attacked each other with sticks. At least 15 people were arrested and 22 injured.

According to this, a 12 year old girl was slaughtered after muslims broke into her home:

I saw an account of the attack on the Copts, reported in my local newspaper the other day through the AP or some other wire service. Typically, an attempt was made to depict the attack as an example of a sectarian "cycle of violence" scenario within Egypt, where the culpability of the Muslims was not entirely established. Worse still, the reported official US response was (to paraphrase, but only slightly - I wish I had the article at hand so I could copy the response verbatim) that both sides (Muslims and Copts) had to show tolerance and mutual respect for one another's beliefs.
I would have much preferred to have seen a response like this: "The Egyptian government has failed to demonstrate that it has taken adequate measures to protect the Coptic minority, which, under the Mubarak regime, has had its churches burned and its women raped, killed, or forcibly converted to Islam, to name just a few of the anti-Christian measures tolerated if not actively encouraged by Egyptian officials. It has also been extremely difficult - even virtually impossible - for the Copts to repair, or expand their houses of worship, or to build new ones. In effect, the Copts of Egypt are second-class citizens, marginalized and subjected to intimidation and physical harm. One of the conditions for the receipt of American aid was that Egypt agree to uphold the rights of all of its citizens, including those of the Copts. Egypt has failed to comply with this condition, and shall be put on notice - the Egyptian government must take steps immediately -robust, permanent ones - to protect and uphold the basic human rights of this minority, or there will be no further economic assistance forthcoming from the USA."
If only.

Actually, attacks on Copts have been going in Egypt for centuries, at varying intensity. When there was a Jewish population there [up to the 1950s], then they too were often attacked, exploited, humiliated, etc., over the centuries.

When Islam attacks Christians, and Christians attempt to defend themselves from being slaughtered these attacks, then it's called "a clash between Muslims and Christians," in order to make it seem like the Christians are a guilty party to it. Had the Christians just stood by to be slaughtered, and not defended themselves, it would not have made "news" at all.

When Muslims slaughter people unopposed, it isn't newsworthy, but when they are opposed, the "news" is about "intolerance between Christians and Muslims." And THEY wonder why they are losing their audience. It's just going to have to get to the point to where there will be more Christians than the cold-blooded Islamic murderers know what to do with. Christianity is going to make a huge comeback in Egypt very soon...

Eliyahu:

I am aware of what happened to the Jews of Egypt - expulsion and confiscation of property, pogroms, etc. Of course, the Jews of Libya, Iraq, Algeria, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen met the same fate, the culmination of hundreds of years of persecution and marginalization as dhimmis - "protected people" under the yoke of Islam. I chose to focus on the Copts simply because Egypt has no remaining significant Jewish population, and this, as I am sure you know (but others may not, so I am stating this here) has been true for about forty years.

Commonsense,
what's interesting in the Egyptian case, especially, is that despoiling the Jews there was done by Nasser, who was the darling of the "left" and of much of the press, "liberals," "conservatives," ARAMCO, American academics in the fields of sociology, political science, and the new field of Middle Eastern studies --who also dabbled in foreign policy implementation, the DC-based journal Middle East Journal [funded by oil interests, was it?]. After the Jews, if I am not mistaken, Nasser turned to the Greeks [many of whom had been in Egypt for generations], Italians, and other non-Muslims considered non-Egyptian, and confiscated their property. The pretexts then were "nationalization" and socialism. Somehow, the rich Muslims were not expropriated, as I recall. Among the Jews, some were stateless persons [sometimes descended from immigrants], some had citizenship in various foreign states, which became attractive to dhimmis in the 19th century as a way of getting out of subjection to shari`ah yet staying in their home countries. But many Jews were of old families that had been in Egypt since the Hellenistic age, certainly before the Arabs. Their property too was subject to expropriation in the name of nationalization and socialism. Eddie Said's father, an American citizen, had a prosperous stationery business in Cairo years before edward said was born. He too may have been expropriated. It seems that the enlightened public in the West, if such existed [or still exists], was not much concerned by Nasser and company's abuse of human rights. The Third World notion was so glamourous at that time. Before the British left, the Muslim "nationalists" were relatively light on the Copts. They wanted to get rid of the Jews, Greeks, etc., first. When that was accomplished, then they could go after the Copts as they do now. Walid Phares claims that the situation of the Copts was worsened by the Camp David agreement with Israel, since it emboldened the Islamists, the Ikhwan, etc. By the way, an Israel scholar named Lasker [spelling?], maybe Michael Lasker, has written on the despoliation of the Egyptian Jews.
