Mullah Omar was declared caliph -- Emir al-Momineen, or Leader of the Believers -- by his followers in Afghanistan in 1994. Omar went to the Shrine of the Respectable Cloak of Muhammad in Kandahar and wrapped himself in the cloak, while his followers hailed him. But Omar's claim to the caliphate has been complicated by a number of matters since then. This is the first group outside Afghanistan to acknowledge it.
The restoration of the caliphate, of course, is foremost on the agenda of the global mujahedin. The caliph alone can declare offensive jihad against infidel nations -- which is why Osama casts all his present actions as defensive.
"Algerian terror group seeks Zarqawi's help," from UPI, with thanks to DFS:
ALGIERS, Algeria, May 2 (UPI) -- Algeria's most feared militant Islamic group has pleaded for the help of al-Qaida's chief in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, following painful setbacks by the army. The Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, led by Abu Musab Abdel Wadoud Abdel Malek, sent a letter to Zarqawi hailing his activities in fighting the enemies of Islam and declaring Taliban leader Mullah Omar as the "caliphate of Muslims."
The letter urged Zarqawi to "support brothers in Algerian jihad groups by making sermons that call for defeating the tyrants."

declaring Taliban leader Mullah Omar as the "caliphate of Muslims."
Shouldn't that be "caliph" of Muslims? "Caliphate" is the office and/or the realm, "caliph" is the person. That's like calling Arthur "kingdom".

Yes, Television. That's in the UPI story, not my comments. I am sure it's an error.

Keeping it simple for the stupid.
That'll introduce a one eyed perspective to their thoughts and actions then.

I find it very interesting that the individual they've "chosen" as Caliph is a one-eyed mullah from Afghanistan. According to Islamic eschatology, the final battle before the end of the world, the Muslim version of the anti-christ would be one-eyed, emerge from beyond Khurasan, and would deceive Muslims into accepting him as the Madhi.
Although the hadiths of Sahih Al-Bukhari and of Sahih Muslim contradict each other (such as which eye is blind this individual is know as the "One-eyed Dajjal" most agree with the account narrated by Ubadah ibn as-Samit that The Prophet said,“I have told you so much about the Dajjal (Anti-Christ) that I am afraid you may not understand. The Anti-Christ is short, hen-toed, woolly-haired, one-eyed, an eye-sightless, and neither protruding nor deep-seated. If you are confused about him, know that your Lord is not one-eyed.”[Sunan of Abu-Dawud #4306]
Food for thought???????

Provoslani, it wouldn't make sense for Muslims to choose the "anti-Christ" for a Caliph, since in Islamic eschatology, the anti-Christ is an evil figure who will fight against Islam.
In fact, most Muslims believe that Jesus himself will return to defend Islam by fighting and defeating the Dajjal (= anti-Christ): then Jesus will become the Caliph of a global Islam.

Any idea how tall Mullah Omar is?
It is strange a muslim would pick a one-eyed guy to be the caliph. You would think they would err on the side of caution.

Good.
Have them appoint a caliph. Then we'll have a top dog to shoot at. Maybe they'll through a big shin-dig for his coronation and we can get 'em all at the same time.

Shindigs are not legal in Islam according to the Hullabaloo verses. "There shalt not be shindigs unless the prophet gets invited". This comes from the verses translated by Moon Doggie.

I understand now why he went to the Shrine of the Respectable Cloak of Muhammad in Kandahar (and he wouldn't want a disreputable cloak now would he?)
If you were "short, hen-toed, woolly-haired, one-eyed, an eye-sightless, and neither protruding nor deep-seated" wouldn't you want Harry Potter's invisibility cloak. Or something similar?

How did the "Respectable Cloak of Mohammed" end up in Kandahar, of all places? Wouldn't one expect it to be in Mecca, Medina, Baghdad, Dimashq, or other such places?
(Also, the semen stained dress of Mohammed which he wore the day after he consumated Ayesha, is that a respectable apparel? Where is it, and its shrine? Is there a noble mosque dedicated to that anywhere? Or did Daddy Abu Baqr not allow it?)
Also, why Mullah Omar? Why not Osama, or al-Zawahiri? In fact, Osama has his fan following in Pakistan, Bangladesh & Indonesia. Why not pick him?

Note also that there is a story that states the exact opposite:
Algeria: Militants' website Denies Appeal to Al-Zarqawi - (GSPC) denies it asked Al-Zarqawi to issue jihad appeal to Algerian people

Or Zarqawi in Iraq? He seems pretty adept at beheadings, so he's obviously qualified.
I sure hope that factional fighting doesn't break out over who is the "real" caliph, because we all know how terrible that would be. Muslims knifing Muslims, Muslims blowing up Muslims, Muslims shooting Muslims, Muslims beheading Muslims. Yes, maybe Condi can offer her diplomatic skills in resolving the whole "caliph" fracas before it gets started. She seems pretty knowledgeable about the "Islam thingamajigger". Maybe offer a port-security deal here, a military-parts-supply deal there, and so on.

For more info on Mullah Omar's assumption of the long dormant title of Emir al-Momineen see:
http://www.csmonitor.com/2001/1010/p1s4-wosc.html
Omar married one of Osama Bin Laden's daughters and Osama married one of Omar's daughters. It appears that they were trying to replicate the family connections that Muhammed shared with Abu Bakr although I don't know how old the daughters were at the time of their marriages.
There is a photo of Mullah Omar at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mullah_Omar

So, some Algerian Salfists are endorsing Mullah Omar as Caliph and, at the same time asking Al-Zarqawi for assistance in rallying the troups in Algeria. Aren't they afraid of offending OBL, who, after all, appointed the Zark-man "Emir of the Land of Two Rivers"?
