The Israeli calculation here seems to be that Abbas is preferable to Hamas, when all that is actually certain is that he is publicly less bellicose. It is also unclear whether he holds any real power, and can restrain Hamas in any meaningful way -- and whether he really wants to. From the TimesOnline, with thanks to all who sent this in:
A HAMAS plot to assassinate Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, has been thwarted after he was tipped off by Israeli intelligence.Hamas’s military wing, the Izza Din Al-Qassem, had planned to kill Abbas at his office in Gaza, intelligence sources said.
Abbas, who became president of the Palestinian Authority last year after the death of Yasser Arafat, was formally warned of the danger by the Israelis and cancelled a planned visit to the territory.

This does not surprise me that Hammas would want Abbas out of the way, they are acting like a crimimnal element that they are, such as the mafia. Abbas when his party was in power had the backing of the world, unfortunately not the will to crack down on Hammas, and now paying the price for his lack of resolve. perhaps France looks good for him..mmmm

Like all Muslims, the Palestinians will not see any altruism in this gesture as they are not capable of it themselvers so therefore any altruistic action by anyone and especially the Israelis will simply be seen as having ulterior motives. Now naturally there will be some selfish component in it for the Israelis (? a less labile enemy) but it will never be seen as anything other than weakness at worst and stupidity at best.
It is so nice to have an enemy with totally no concept of boundary, no idea of reciprocation, a totally amoral attitude towards necessity and an deluded impression of innate superiority based upon the religious bleating of a con man.

Spencerd...there is no death but painful death for these people who are usually too cowardly to show their faces.
I could laugh at the fact that these heroes who are "not afraid to die in the name of allah" are simply too yellow to show their faces on their idea of a snuff video.
What a masterly example of islamic morality and Muslim heroism!!!
Where is the pesticide?

Considering how much fatah and hamas like eachother one of the reason the Israelis told Abbas could be to heighten the ill feeling between the two groups.

Considering the Muslim world and its helpers the Israelis could not risk being blamed for This crime.

I don't know what the Israelis were thinking? They should be hoping for red-on-red, not stopping it. Are they suicidal?

I agree with fireangel. Anything to stoke Palestinian civil war. In fact it's consistent with what Hugh has advocated here--keep the Muslims fighting each other rather than the Infidels.

Slightly OT, but relevant nevertheless:
At the bottom of the Times article, this paragraph appeared:
'The Sunday Times May 07, 2006
Israel foils plot to kill Palestinian president
Uzi Mahnaimi, Tel Aviv
# Violent clashes erupted in the West Bank town of Hebron early this morning when Israeli police backed by hundreds of security troops tried to evict a group of squatters occupying an abandoned Palestinian home. Police called for further reinforcements after several officers and settlers were injured in the battle.'
***
Sorry, Uzi, it wasn't an "abandoned Palestinian home. It was a sold (and rented) "Palestinian" apartment house and those weren't "settlers", they were the true heirs of the property. The facts of the case as described by A-7 (more believable and closer to the bone than the Times) were:

'Forced Evacuation of Hevron Building Has Ended
21:45 May 07, '06 / 9 Iyar 5766
by Hillel Fendel
The families moved into the building a month ago, after the Jewish Community of Hevron purchased it from its Arab owners. They also rented the building, for good measure, in the event that the purchase would be challenged - as in fact occurred. No fewer than eight Arab families claim ownership over the two-story building, claiming that the purchase papers were invalid.
The Jews said in response that this claim was to be foreseen, as Arabs who sell to Jews are in danger of their lives and therefore often deny the sales.
The police, however, hurried last week to begin evicting the Jews from the property. The Jewish residents turned to the Supreme Court, asking that the matter be determined in court and not by the police. The Court, however, ruled that the eviction could proceed. The Jewish owners say they will bring the matter to lower courts, but Hevron spokesman David Wilder estimated that it could take a year or more to be resolved.'

Okay, you got that? They bought it and they rented it. Here's some more:

'Hevron Issues Call to Public: Come to Fight Injustice!
23:04 May 06, '06 / 8 Iyar 5766
by Ezra HaLevi
Despite thorough documentation of the sale, the police claimed that the documents were forged. Israel's Supreme Court declined to review the evidence, referring the case to the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court to examine instead. The court did, however, order the residents to leave the building until a verdict is reached – something that could take months.
Hevron community leaders decided at a late-night meeting Thursday night to reject the court order to voluntarily leave the building, saying, "This building was purchased for a tremendous amount of money and the sale is 100 percent legal. The Supreme Court ruling was not based on legal issues, but rather on political considerations, which were raised by the state prosecutor during [Thursday]'s hearing. We have no intention to leave the building voluntarily."'
***
So, here are some facts:
Hevron was the seat of Dovid HaMelech (King David) for seven years before he took over the Kingdom of Israel. Hevron is the location of the cave of Machpelah, burial place of Avraham, Sarah, etc etc etc. Thre are a lot of Arabs living there and a small number of Jews who are holding on to the land. Hey, it's our land, our cave, our patriarchs.
According to local sources (whom I would believe)the Arabs who actually sold the property are in trouble because they are to some collaborating with "the enemy"...for which number of Arabs/Arab Israelis have been killed by the PA.
The police have probably only suffred minor injuries and they were mainly "fighting" a bunch of girls.
Can you believe eight Arab families claim they hae sold this apartment house?
Given all this, I have to ask if you can believe the upper portion of the article in the Times UK. One wonders at this point how much of it was a plant and what information was a plant.

WHY???
at May 7, 2006 10:38 PM
Hamalach if you check the history of the area over the alst 200 years yoyu will find that Muslim scum "ripped off" every christian and jew who purchasedland in the middle east and especially so just after WW1.
There is a story of an arab goat herder who was looking for one of his goats near a spring somewhere in Palestine when he met a christian: one intent upon buying land and settling in the "holy land" .
The christian asked him who owned the land and the goat herder seeing a kafir fool, said that he did. So the christian promptly arranged to pay him and when he did the goat herder moved on to another spot and hoped to repeat the trick.
Fortunately for the christian no one actually did own the land and he gained title. But that was the exception, not the rule.
This game whad been played often in the 18th and the 19th century as well but the goat herder did not realise that as he was simply showing good Islamic initiative in the face of a kafir fool.

A HAMAS plot to assassinate Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, has been thwarted after he was tipped off by Israeli intelligence.
Seems that Israelis leaders (Quislings) have always been in cahoots with the PLO. I think his death would have started a civil war over there.
