A convert who wanted to spread the faith

Another convert to Islam misunderstands the Religion of Peace™: a profile of one of the Canadian jihad suspects, Steven Chand, aka Abdul Shakur. From the Globe and Mail, with thanks to Sr. Soph:

TORONTO -- His lawyer says he is accused of wanting to storm Parliament so he could personally cut off the Prime Minister's head.

But before those wild allegations came to light yesterday, terrorism suspect Steven Chand, a welfare recipient and basement-suite dweller, was better known for roaming east Toronto public schools trying to persuade students to convert to Islam -- a path he took himself.

Mr. Chand was born in Canada into a Hindu family, but converted to Islam in his early 20s and changed his name to Abdul Shakur.

Little is publicly known about what drove Mr. Chand to convert. His parents are divorced, and Mr. Chand's acquaintances say the split troubled him.

His mother and father, who both live in Markham, a suburb north of Toronto, refused to comment on his past.

Whatever his motivation to switch, Mr. Chand is a devout Muslim. He prayed two or three times a week at the Salaheddin Islamic Centre in Scarborough, a mosque attended by at least four of the suspects picked up in Friday's terrorism bust, said the mosque's imam, Aly Hindy.

Mr. Chand also wanted to spread the faith. He spent two or three days a week going to local schools, distributing free books and written materials about Islam and encouraging school-aged children to become Muslims, said Mohamed Ally, a friend from the mosque....

Two of the youths charged in the sweeping arrests recently converted to Islam, according to friends from Stephen Leacock Collegiate Institute in Scarborough. One was Hindu, another a Tamil.

Six months ago, Mr. Chand responded to an ad at the mosque and moved into a basement suite in the home of Mohammad Attique, an Islamic book publisher who has five sons, three of them in their late teens.

Mohsin Attique, 17, said he believed that Mr. Chand had a tense relationship with his family, partly caused by his religious conversion.

Robert, I noticed that "Religion of Peace™" above has a trademark symbol. Subtle humor, or did someone actually copyright it?

"One was Hindu, another a Tamil."

Isn't that redundant? Tamil is an ethno-linguistic designation, not a religious one. 93% of all Tamils are Hindus. Unless this particular Tamil was from the Christian minority or his parents were communists/athiests as is the case with some Tamils, particularly in Sri Lanka.

All the more reason to target any new converts to Islam - that's what they are headed for. A la Jihad Johnny bin Walker Lindh, David Hicks.

Provoslavni

By Hindu, I think the original writer meant Hindi, as in North India. 80% of Indians are Hindu, and no attempt is made in any census to filter out athiests or communists. Also, they were talking about two people here.

Still, it's disturbing that anybody fortunate enough to be born into dar-ul-Harb should consider Islam. Anybody who does should be treated as a potential criminal, and targeted. Also, I fail to see why parents divorcing would have driven Steven Vikas Chand to Islam.

Also an indicator that anyone who converts to Islam is probably more lethal than those born Muslims, since they take the extra effort to join the ranks of the ummah, whereas some of those born into Islam take the effort to escape it.

Ironically, Religion of Peace™ describes only Islam; nobody uses the term to describe far more peaceful religions, such as Buddhism or Christianity. Reminds one of the fact that the German Democratic Republic wasn't West Germany, the People's Republic of China isn't Taiwan and the People's Republic of Korea isn't South Korea.

Just the very name tells us emphatically what it isn't.

Infidel Pride-

Just as Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot led "People's Liberation Armies" in order to enslave the population more completely.

GUESS WHAT!

This bust came about because of Government surveillance (you know---the kind of surveillance the Beiden,Pelosi,Kennedy so vehemently oppose). PTTTTHHH to those who oppose every effort to locate and eliminate the terrorist threat to my freedom and my life. I think those people who oppose terrorist surveillance by any means availiable may be worried about something may come out about them!!
After all they are Democrats
