It's all a "colonial crusader scheme," you see, and it's condemned by none other than the Prophet of Islam himself. From Ynet News, with thanks to Sr. Soph:
A British jihadists website has warned Muslims against being drawn in to what they described as "the new religion of soccer."The Saved Sect website, which calls on Muslims to work to establish an Islamic state in Britain, has attacked "football fever," saying that soccer has "captivated the masses, dedicating their time and effort towards it."
Comparing the allegiance of soccer fans to Islam and jihad, the organization said: "Football is the deen (religion) by which people live their lives by and are willing to die for. Their jihad is to fight against those who are arch rivals against their team. Their da'wah (call, invitation) is to publicize, defend and justify their team, inviting others to support them in this."...
Claiming that soccer plants the seeds of nationalism, and is therefore part of a "colonial crusader scheme" to divide Muslims and cause them to stray from the vision of a unified Islamic identity, the website told readers: "The sad fact of the matter is that many Muslims have fallen for this new religion and they too carry the national flag.
The statement, aimed at calling on British Muslims to disassociate themselves with the World Cup in Germany, ended with a quote by Islam's prophet, Muhammad, condemning nationalism.

Ouch! And that at a time that Saoudi, Tunisia, and Iran are certain of a spot in the finals.

Yes, they say so regularly. All sports are unislamic. Yoga is unislamic. They went wild in India when a muslim tennis player (sania mirza) wore shorts on court. They also threatened her when she wore a ring through her nose. (They think noserings are a Hindu practice). imams wanted sania to play tennis in a burka.

No, Muslim countries SHOULD participate in the world cup. Their repeated defeats at the hands of European / African or Latin American teams illustrates to the (for e.g.) Iranian population their own inferiority. Many have commented on the cynical and cheating way Iran played against Portugal (that tackle on Figo!). The world understands how to play soccer with honor and skill. When they see cynical diving for fouls and the cynical and aggressive tactics used by Turkey (against Switzerland), where Turkish policemen joined in the attempted intimidation of the Swiss...the whole world sees these cultures for what they are...unhonorable.

"O people of Britain, we invite to Islam, to accept it as the truth and to worship and obey Allah exclusively and not associate partners with Him. If you accept, then Allah promises you contentment in this life and Paradise in the Hereafter. If you decline, Allah promises you misery in this life, and severe punishment in the Hereafter. The decision is yours O people of Britain."
From the saved sect website. I shall decline, and they shall regret their threats.

Soccer was invented by muslims back in about 702 or there about. Mo was goalie for the Meccah CamelHerders for a brief stretch. Once while playing he started having a prophetic fit and was conversing with Gabriel. The opposing team saw Mo was flopping about on the ground thrashing and foaming at the mouth. They, Medinah HeadHunters, took the opportunity to score the winning goal. One of the HeadHunters also kicked Mo in the groin and was ejected from the game for UnProphet-like conduct. Mo was scorned by his teammates for this episode and replaced with a new goalie named Ahmad Hogwaller.
The very next prophecy that Mo delivered was for the banning of soccer. Mo was a hell of a table tennis player as well, but that's another prophecy.

When we crash out of the World Cup in about two weeks time I will tell the victors that the game was devisive, un-English and never did Jesus play the game. (please spare me the Jesus saves joke!) so we let you beat us. Oh and by the way that's my ball.

They obviously haven't been reading ITV1's Teletext page 411. Nine pages of variants on 'We are crap and should come home now!'

shy guy...this thread is about an Islamic response to soccer. considering the world cup is watched by 1.5 billion people, and is the most important sporting event in countries like Iran..a discussion about the world cup is absolutely relevant. maybe you should go back to watching the Miami heat and leave the rest of the world to enjoy the largest sporting event in the world

Shy Guy,
'I've got World Cup this and World Cup that coming out of my ears!!'
It hasn't gone unnoticed that Israel did not qualify for the tournament, but what you lack on the pitch you excel on the stage of music and glamour. Topping the competition in 1978 & 1979. Who can forget that 1998 entry with 'Dana Internation' singing 'Diva' in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Remember folks that "The World Cup" is to the rest of the world as the "Superbowl" is to the USA. It's that simple.

This is a bit out of date as we do know where Saddam Hussein is.
Other Arsenal supporters include my Dad, Dr George Carey the former Archbishop of Canterbury and the Chief Rabbi so it's not all bad.

Nationalism the cure for Islam, seems like even Mo realised it.

Israel is geographically in Asia. If you pretend to be a part of Europe, of course you won't ever qualify for the world cup, ahead of France, Germany, Italy, Spain, et al.

Cool. Forcing Muslims to choose between soccer and Islam may finally kill off that religion.

That's because the stadiums should be for executing females that disobey Shariah-law or offend Allah and Muhammad.
I'm sure Europe could easily fill a 60'000 seat stadium with pro-Shaia yahoo's cheering the murders in public.

Infidel Pride,
try to recall why Israel doesn't take part in the Asian Games and Asian Leagues. The Arabs and other Muslim states prevented Israeli participation. That exclusion started long ago. So we were forced to ask to join Euro leagues, although not all the Euros were happy to have us. Now, I see that for the time being it's better not to play Arab teams. If we win, they'll want to start a war, or at least perpetrate a few terrorist mass murders in order to redeem their lost honor. If they win, then we'll feel humiliated and they will go around the world trying to humiliate every Jew they meet and will perpetrate a few terrorist mass murders against us to celebrate their victory and to let us know, finally, what we're really worth, in their eyes. Or, at least, they'll send over a few or a few dozen rockets to humiliate us further. So there is no point in playing them. It will be even more obvious than it is in sports [including soccer] generally that international team sports competitions are a continuation of war by other means. -- Further, if they win they might feel that the time has come to start the big war.
Anyhow, most of us here don't want to have much to do with them. This is as true of most Israelis whose families came from Arab countries as it is of the Israeli Jews in general. The best, most peaceful outcome is for Israel to have recognized deterrent power in strategic territory, weapons, and the known will to use them. This also means minimizing contact with them, minimizing "cultural exchange" and "understanding." If an Arab wants to read an Israeli book or learn Hebrew, we're not going to stop them. And vice versa. But if they don't want to treat us as equals, which their religion forbids, then we can't force them except by war, and we're better off not trying to appease them while compromising our rights and dignity and honor. For the best possible situation, that is, an armed peace or armed truce, the Western powers have to stay out of the conflict between Israel and the Arabs. We don't need any Sohlberg-Black Forest get togethers for Franco-German understanding like those run by Otto Abetz before WW2 which prepared the way for the German occupation of France. The Western Powers cause a lot of the trouble by financing the palestinian authority, Egypt, Saudi Arabia [through subsidies paid through the fake "oil income tax" over the years]. So the West doesn't have a moral justification for its interventions, although the EU invents excuses for itself all time. Let them spend their money on their own poor and we won't need to spend so much on treating victims of terrorist attacks that the EU has paid for, albeit indirectly.
I'm all in favor of playing sports contests against India, China, African countries, Japan, etc. But playing the Arabs would not be much in the way of sports, considering the generally low level of Arab sports competitition, and would only be the occasion for more Arab violence.

Mohammed never played football so true Muslims don't play football. Mohammed was a raging paedophile... Likewise.
