In "Mind of Mugniyeh: The Iranian architect of Hezbollah's terror" by Dan Darling, My Weekly Standard (thanks to Sr. Soph), despite its overall cluelessness about jihad terrorism, actually comes up with something useful:
THE NAME Imad Fayez Mugniyeh is probably not familiar to most Americans, but it is never been far from the minds of most international security experts. As the fighting between Hezbollah and Israel continues, analysts and observers would do well to remember Mughniyeh, who may have been the architect of the Hezbollah raid that killed eight Israeli soldiers, captured two others, and sparked the current crisis.Details of Mughniyeh's origins are fragmentary. He is believed to have served as a member of Force 17, Yasser Arafat's personal bodyguard unit, before joining Hezbollah. There he acted first as a bodyguard for the group's spiritual leader, Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah, and eventually rose to his current role as the group's operations chief. His official role in Hezbollah is unclear, with various sources describing him as the current head of Hezbollah's security section, a member of the group's Jihad Council, the director of its intelligence apparatus, or its external operations chief.
He likely serves as all of the above, but whatever the case, one thing is clear: He has been at the heart of every major Hezbollah terrorist attack for the better part of the last 25 years.
Read it all.

The New Regime Loses Wars
In 1911, Italy warred against the Ottoman Empire for the possession of what was then a part of the Ottoman Empire: Libya. Italy won this war, which demonstrated the weakness of the Ottoman Empire. Bulgaria, Serbia and Greece wanted the Ottomans out of Europe, and they overcame their differences as to how Ottoman holdings in Europe were to be divided. Bulgaria and Serbia were demanding autonomy for Bulgarians and Serbs within the empire, and Greece was calling for the liberation of oppressed Christians - Greeks - living within the Ottoman Empire. Montenegro joined in the opposition against the Ottoman Empire, and in October, 1912, these four powers mobilized for war, for territory they believed was theirs. Germany backed the Ottoman Empire, and France backed Serbia.

Passivity and Aggression in Europe, to 1936
Voices in Britain and the United States against War
Many in Great Britain were looking back upon the horrors of World War I. The novel by the German author, Erich Maria Remarque, All Quiet on the Western Front, had been published in 1929, and it was a sensation in Britain. There were other widely read books on the horrors of World War I, including Vera Brittain's memoirs of nursing during the war, Testament of Youth. The British were also reading about Gandhi, who was frequently in the news in Britain concerning his non-violent, civil disobedience campaigns in India. And, in response to the horrors of war, some in Britain saw hope in Gandhi's pacifism preventing their nation from again going to war. And they hoped that Gandhi's pacifism being adopted in all nations.
BUT THIS IS A MUST READ BECAUSE THE MORE THINGS CHANGE THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME HISTORY DOES MATTER!!
In January 1933, Hitler came to power, and in Britain people became more concerned about the likelihood of war. The question of war was debated on university campuses in both the Britain and the United States. In the U.S. in 1933, Brown University conducted a poll of 21,725 students from sixty-five U.S. colleges, and the poll found 8,415 who declared themselves pacifists, 7,221 who believed that the only justification for their nation bearing arms would be its having been invaded, and only 6,089 who declared that they would fight another war if the government ordered them to do so.NOTE In February 1933, students at Oxford University debated the question that "this House will in no circumstance fight for king and country." At the conclusion of the debate, 275 undergraduates voted against fighting for king and country, and 153 voted for fighting for king and country. Newspapers described the debate, and many in Britain were dismayed. The controversy over the debate inspired another, larger, noisier debate at Oxford, with Winston Churchill's son, Randolph, leading the debate against the pacifists. And the pacifists won by a larger margin: 750 to 138. Similar debates at the London School of Economics resulted in a pacifist resolution that was supported unanimously. Aberystwyth University in Wales voted 186 to 99 for pacifism. Manchester University voted for pacifism 371 to 196. And students in Canada and New Zealand voted with the Oxford pacifists.
Hitler was watching, and, contemptuous of pacifism, he was encouraged. Winston Churchill was outraged.
YES THIS A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE THAT MAYBE A HELP TO NOT BE DAMED TO REPEAT THIS HORROR?

Isn't it curious that the worst Jihad leaders seem to thrive and prosper and go uncaught -- even end up elected officials like Arafat did -- and yet we are all supposed to believe that it is only a minority of Muslims that sympathize with and support Jihad.
It's utter lunacy to believe such, and yet we have so many talking heads that continue to insist that it is so. I am reminded daily that the intelligence quotient Bell Curve is very real: all I have to do is turn on CNN and listen to the idiots.
The smartest end of the spectrum reads Jihad Watch.

I've noticed that the folks at theweeklystandard.com do not like to contemplate the possibility that jihad violence is rooted in religious ideology. It may be that this is simply too bleak a prospect to contemplate. Dan Darling's pieces seem to me to consistently miss this.
At the site today, there is also a piece by Stephen Schwartz, who rightly blames the Saudi govt for promoting jihad ideology, but limits his criticism to the Wahhabi sect.
The "neoconservative" mindset may be the death of us all.
A couple of years ago I corresponded with a significant contributor to the NRO site about my concerns, and he wrote back to assure me that Muslims across the world basically want the same things that "we" want. That's a perilous conceit.
I think that JW/DW is making a difference in perceptions in places of influence. Will it lead to policy changes in time? To borrow a phrase from Michael Ledeen (who I suspect doesn't fully "get it" yet himself), "faster, please."
Thanks Robert, Hugh and your associates.

Dhimmisoftheworldunite,
I agree. There’s a definite fear that the violent ideology may well be rooted in this so-called ‘religion of peace’ and, though the evidence is blatant and right in front of their eyes daily, they still cannot accept it. I was watching part of the ‘war show’ the other day on one of the main news channels (CNN, Fox, MSNBC …I don’t know which one –they’re all equally clueless, it appears) and this one supposed ‘expert’ on the ME claimed they had no idea where the source of the violence comes from. Amazing, isn’t it?
Doesn’t it almost feel as if we’re watching some people walking through a peaceful crowd wielding guns, taking potshots at various people and shooting them at point blank range and, the whole time, screaming defiantly that they’re peaceful and someone else is ultimately to blame? Instead of turning to confront these individuals and stopping them (we still outnumber them in most places, after all) the crowd just ignores it. The entire world sees the horrors, yet it’s largely ignored.
I know that JW/DW is definitely making a difference. Personally, I didn’t understand what any of this stuff was until 911 happened. I suppose, though it was the worst thing to happen, we can truly be thankful they’ve shown their ways to us.

Would I get arrested if I went to DC and protested by carrying a sign stating "Death to Islam", burning the Iranian flag, and hanging Aminigonad in effigy.
I would not last 30 seconds. At least I would have enough sense to call the main stream media ahead of time to ensure the cameras were availiable. They would then report an American lunatic arrested trying to spread hate and worldwide discord.
yeah buddy

I think that many in the West believe the "it's your fault" rhetoric of the Islamists. Our enlightened judicial system recognizes mitigating circumstances which diminish the culpability of criminals. There are many circumstances that look to people in the West as mitigations of the violence of the Islamists --- poverty, the legacy of colonialism, present despotic governance, and so on.
So yes, MaxInfidel, people are pre-disposed to look away from the violent Islamists, and to hope that if we make things better somehow, they will be quieter. I think that is part of the motive underlying the present international gang-up on Israel, "please don't do anything to make these people more angry than they already are!"
And that is why it's crucial that people understand that the violence is not simply a reaction to bad circumstances in which the West may be implicated, but is native to the faith system. More and more people are "getting it".
Here is a provocative bit of speculative fiction that I found linked on NRO's "The corner" today. It's nice to think that those guys are noticing such things. They don't mention JW/DW (I think Andrew McCarthy has once or twice), but some of them are "getting it".
http://www.dansimmons.com/news/message/2006_04.htm
This post generated a storm of criticism, which the author responded to in the next post:
http://www.dansimmons.com/news/message/2006_05.htm
He answers the objections well. Even here though, the writer suggests that the problem is "radical" "Wahhabi" Islam, though he does recognize (and documents) how widespread jiahd thinking is even among non-Wahhabis, and that the radical vision is rooted in the ancient texts and traditions.
So this is an illustration that a measure of awareness is percolating into popular culture.
Again, I think that JW/DW deserved enormous credit for this.
