Important observations from Daniel Pipes in FrontPage this morning (many news links in the original):
About 4 p.m. on Friday, July 28, on the eve of the Jewish sabbath, a Muslim terrorist of Pakistani origins named Naveed Afzal Haq forced a 14-year-old girl to get him into the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle building by holding a gun to her back. He then pulled out the two large-caliber semi-automatic pistols he had just purchased and went on a murderous rampage. Haq killed one woman, Pam Waechter, 58, an assistant director at the federation, and injured five others, one of whom was 17 weeks pregnant.Eye-witnesses report that Haq announced, "I'm a Muslim American; I'm angry at Israel," and then began shooting; that he "told the police that it was a hostage situation and he wanted us to get our weapons out of Israel" and that he was upset about what was going on in Israel. To a 911 dispatcher, Haq announced: "I want these Jews to get out. … I'm upset at your foreign policy. These are Jews. I'm tired of getting pushed around, and our people getting pushed around by the situation in the Middle East. … I'm an American too but I just want our people out of Iraq."
Some twelve minutes later, Haq, 30, quietly turned himself in to the police. Jailed without bail, he was charged with aggravated murder in the first degree. This atrocity prompts several reflections.
First, law enforcement has, as is its wont, ignored what is self-evidently a case of radical Islamic terrorism. David Gomez of the FBI's Seattle office commented: "We believe ... it's a lone individual acting out his antagonism. There's nothing to indicate that it's terrorism-related." As in other cases, if the police cannot connect a terrorist to Al-Qaeda or some other group, he is deemed not a terrorist.
Second, Muslim hatred and violence toward Jews points to the golden age of American Jewry coming to an end. Ironically, in April 2002, in the very building where Haq rampaged, I made this point to an audience of Jewish leaders, who seemed oblivious to my message. Robin Boehler, Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle president, demonstrated how little my warnings penetrated when she said of Haq's assault, "We didn't believe something like this could happen."
Third, Haq is not someone who would arouse suspicions of jihad. His parents, Mian and Nahida, arrived in the United States in the 1970s, where Naveed was born. His father worked at the Hanford nuclear site. While in high school, Naveed won a $250 award for finishing in second place in an essay contest sponsored by the U.S. Institute of Peace. He graduated with honors in biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and earned a second degree, in electrical engineering, from Washington State University. He also studied at the University of Pennsylvania.
Haq drank alcohol at a bar alone and joined social-networking websites. His rap sheet consisted of a pending lewd conduct charge for having unzipped his pants in March at a shopping mall and exposed himself to young women. He has been in and out of courts to deal with such matters as traffic violations and unemployment benefits. Most surprising of all, he was baptized into the Word of Faith Church last December, but returned to Islam shortly thereafter.
Fourth, Haq's actions are a clear instance of "Sudden Jihad Syndrome," whereby normal-appearing Muslims unpredictably become violent. His attack confirms my oft-repeated call for special scrutiny of Muslims. Because the identity of the next homicidal jihadi cannot be anticipated, Muslims generally need to come under heightened observation. I regret writing this as much as you dislike reading it, but it needs to be said and operated upon.
Fifth, sudden jihad syndrome never erupts in isolation, but results from a steady diet of antisemitic, anti-Zionist, anti-Christian, and anti-American incitement fed by Islamist mosques, schools, voluntary associations, and media. Leftist demonizing of Israel further contributes to the problem.
People who know Haq confirm this barrage of influences shaped his outlook. "Haq didn't like President Bush," notes one person. Another says Haq "displayed a streak of anti-Semitism, sometimes making offhand comments about Jews." He complained that "Jews run the media" and believed Jews control the U.S. economy.
Blame for Haq's evil rampage falls on the executioner himself and on the Islamists and leftists who manipulated his confused mind and susceptible character.

As I read this, I am reminded that Americans in the last two centuries, had similiar misgivings about Roman Catholics -- because of their loyalty to the papacy, which historically (and I believe even to this day), was against democracy as a tenet of faith.
It was this type of misgiving that lead many people in the early sixties, to question the wisdom of have a Catholic President such as John F. Kennedy, run for office. Would he as a Catholic, be loyal first to the Pope or to the country?
As it turned out, most of the fears of a Catholic President have been dispelled, and rightfully so.
Roman Catholicism and Islam have some things in agreement:
there is a cultural component;\
they do not believe in democracy (I checked this one out to make sure -- Pope Pious in 1854 made the claim);
islam issues fatwahs, Roman Catholics issue papal Bulls;
What then is the difference?
Simple.
Aside from the fact that Roman Catholicism is decidedly Christian, and as far as I have been able to figure out, does not advocate the killing of individuals who are not in agreement with the tenets of their faith. (Granted, that has not always been the case -- it is however, the current reality!)
Islam on the other hand, has a completely different mandate for those who are not in agreement with it.
Pipes is correct; islam should be very carefully put under the microscope.
While I differ with my Catholic neighbors on so many issues -- and sometimes our arguments are rather exciting -- I don't have to worry about getting killed!
While I differ with my islamic neighbors on so many more issues -- there is nothing to discuss frankly, and if it is discuss one must talk as if a knife were held to your throat (because it is!)
My Catholic neighbors -- I trust.
My islamic neighbors -- I politely avoid and keep a careful eye on!

there might be moderate muslims, but there is no moderate islam. islam cannot mix with democracy, it has to change, to change islam one is declared an apposate and killed.

I received this SMS from a boy I know.
"All muslims are not terrorists. But all terrorists are muslims. Think about it."
Maybe we can start sending these messages to our friends. Some will think about it. Some will get it.

Typical Muslim reaction, if you don't get your way, then kill.

I'm not sure who coined that observation, but I think it started gaining currency at the time of the London transit system bombing, in the Arab/Muslim media.

From the Religion of Peace website:
Survey reveals backing for 7/7 attacks
8.36, Mon Aug 7 2006
Almost a quarter of British Muslims believe the July 7 terror were justified because of Britain's support for the war on terror, a poll has revealed.
And nearly half said the 9/11 attacks on New York were a conspiracy between the US and Israel.
The survey found Muslims under the age of 24 were twice as likely to justify the 7/7 attacks as those aged over 45.
It found 24 per cent across all age groups either agreed or tended to agree that the 7/7 bombings were justified, although 48 per cent said they "strongly disagreed" and 17 per cent said they did not know.
A third of those questioned said they would rather live under Sharia law in the UK than British law.
The survey also reveals concerns among Muslims about Britain's moral standards, with 40 per cent saying it is a country of bad moral behaviour, and 66 per cent saying parents allow their children too much freedom.
Goes to show, Muslims just support violence and given their track record, we should be monitoring all Muslims in our country. Call it racial profiling or call it precautionary security. It just may save lives. We should start deporting all Muslim found in violation of Visa status. All Muslims convicted in court should be deported instead of jailed. All Muslim immigration should be ceased. The Patriot act should be utilized in monitoring all Muslim calls. Surveillance of Mosques should be enacted. We are at war and the Muslims have proven to be the enemy. They intend to kill you.
This Seattle man is carrying out JIHAD, When you kill because of the JEWS and you are Muslim and you admit it, then you are a war criminal.
Deport this man now, let him wallow in some dirtbag Muslim country.

We are at war.
Every act of war perpetrated against citizens of the West, whether as part of a larger conspiracy or as a freelance operation, must treated as such. Perpetrators of such crimes relinquish their citizenship by their actions and become traitors to the nations in which they reside.
These criminals are thus enemy combatants. Treat them as such. And treat all who aid and abet them as such. This means closing mosques that can be shown to be complicit in such actions. Non-moslems have every right to be protected from this spiritual disease.

The two main tenets of islam followed by all muslims:
1. Convert all of the world to islam or murder the infidels - unbelievers - that will not convert.
2. Eradicate Israel.
Any protesting by muslims contrary to the two tenets are just lies to infidels to protect and hide the main two tenets.
The western civilizations are so PC that they can not see the truth due to the lies.
The western civilizations are at war and allowing the enemy to enter our countries freely to defeat us………
You have to make one of two choices concerning the coming war with islam: to fight and remain free or convert and become a slave to islam, there are no other choices.
I have made the choice to remain free.
Prepare.
If you are not prepared for world wide war including war in your home town, prepare for it is coming.
Be armed.
If you are not armed, arm yourself, your family and your friends. Train everyone to use the fire arms. For practice, use human shaped targets with the kill zone marked. If you live in America, be grateful for you have the right to keep and bare arms for your protection.
Be ready.
If you are not ready, become ready for the war with islam is fastly approaching.
The Texican.
Freedom, the only choice at any cost and the cost will be immense.

The sad fact is that the 75% who disagree become increasingly irrelevant.

Texican - unfortunately I have been following your advice to some degree while trying to get the word out.
It pisses me off to no end to think our future will be hijacked for some time while we stamp out this menace. We all had other plans...
I will be as ready as I can. If it happens in my town and general order breaks down I will be ready. I will be ready by this Saturday (8/12) and that's 10 days before our latest 'drop-dead' date. I hope I'm just being alarmist, but whether it's in 13 days, 13 weeks or 1.3 years, the day is coming. Unfortunately people won't learn until forced to by cataclysmic events.

On August 3rd, a Molotov cocktail was hurled at the Hebrew University of Baltimore City.
Police are investigating the incident as arson, not as a bias crime, because no notes or other messages were found...

Daniel Pipes supplement to the above article:
I could not squeeze every fact and idea into my article today on Naveed Haq, "'Sudden Jihad Syndrome' in Seattle," so here are some additions, which will be added to as the case proceeds through the court system. First, observations concerning Sudden Jihad Syndrome:
As Naveed Afzal Haq drove to the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle building, a police officer stopped him on a minor traffic infraction (driving in a bus-only lane), cited him, and released him, on the grounds that Haq had a valid driver's license and his actions did not raise any suspicion. This is ironic, for as I establish in a weblog entry, "In Praise of Routine Traffic Stops," a close look at drivers with minor vehicular problems has repeatedly prevented terrorism.
In conversation with a 911 dispatcher, Haq said: "I'm upset at your foreign policy. … I'm an American too but I just want us out of Iraq." His outburst points to a duality in Haq's identity: a U.S. citizen by birth, he despises "your" foreign policy. Who is "you"? Also indicative of his mentality is a quote ascribed to him by Seattle Police Chief R. Gil Kerlikowske, that he "wanted the U.S. to leave Iraq, that his people had been mistreated." Who are Haq's people, Iraqi Muslims? That's interesting, seeing that his family comes from Pakistan.
The charging papers provide a transcript of what Haq told the police after his arrest. He said about his actions: "This is about the Jews and what they are doing. The Jews are running the country. This is about getting the U.S. out of Iraq. I am an American and I got no problem with America but we have to get out of Iraq. But we give bombs and guns and bunker-buster bombs to Israel and we shouldn't be doing it, it's got to stop, that's what this is all about."
Haq seemed to have won a high-school reputation for himself as Mr. Peace. Not only did he win a $250 award for his second-place finish in a U.S. Institute of Peace essay contest (I am trying to learn the subject of the essay) but the caption under the graduating picture in his high school yearbook read "Peace be unto you all," perhaps his rendering of the Islamic salutation Salam ‘alaykum. If one needed further proof that talking incessantly about "peace" is no guide to intentions, this is it.
Haq's parents were among the founders of the Islamic Center of the Tri-Cities in southeast Washington State and Naveed himself is described in one newspaper account as growing up "surrounded by their work." Chillingly, soon after returning from a Christian experimentation to his home mosque, Haq set out to murder Jews. The Islamic Center of the Tri-Cities needs close scrutiny. Stephen Schwartz notes in "The Shadow of Seattle" that "the Islamic Center of the Tri-Cities, and an associated property, are affiliated with the North American Islamic Trust (NAIT). NAIT is controlled by the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) and ISNA is an arm of the ultraradical Wahhabi clerics and state religious administration of Saudi Arabia."
The "Certification for Determination of Probable Cause" filed by the Seattle Police Department notes that, when on the telephone talking to 911, Haq "gives his social security number as 288-72-2466" and gave a litany of his grievances about Iraq and Jews. This, plus his readiness to give himself up peaceably to the police, brings to mind the quite parallel actions of another sudden jihadi, Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar, in March 2006.
A friend of Haq's said that he got an e-mail from Haq about six weeks before the rampage, in which Haq announced that he had started to work at a Home Depot store in Everett, Washington. This brings Ali R. Warrayat to mind, the Home Depot employee in Chandler, Arizona, who on Dec. 18, 2005, rode his car into the store in an apparent jihadi effort to do as much damage as possible. Do I see a pattern here, equivalent to "going postal"?
Also of interest:
The immediate response of some in the Muslim community seems to have been to grieve not for the terrorist's victims in Seattle but for his family in the Tri-Cities. Muhammad Ullah, described by the Associated Press as "a close friend of the suspect's family and a senior member of the Islamic Center of the Tri-Cities," responded with "We feel bad for his parents - good parents, good people. Today, this is a totally sad day for our community."
CAIR's take: As signaled by his title, M. Zuhdi Jasser wrote a powerful article on the Haq case, "Islamofascist Rage in Seattle." In reply, and on the same page, a certain "Bushra4693" complained: "Perhaps Jasser needs to get his facts right, because Haq denounced Islam last year and converted to Christianity. Therefore, his own statement of describing himself as a Muslim American is inaccurate and unfounded." Jasser points out that "'Bushra4693' uses the same name as Bushra Khan, which is the same name as that of the Office Manager of the local Arizona chapter of Council on American Islamic Relations." It Jasser's connection is correct, we here have CAIR's unvarnished reaction to the rampage – Haq was lying when he called himself a Muslim.
The Los Angeles Times provides a moving account of the remarkable actions of Dayna Klein, 37 years old and 17 weeks pregnant, whom the police credit with doing much to end Haq's rampage. "She was shot in the arm … because she was shielding her belly. She fell and crawled to her office and dialed 911, [police chief] Kerlikowske said. Haq, he said, told her ‘not to do that. But she continued to tell the 911 operators what was happening.' … In the 911 call, Klein and the dispatchers, speaking jointly to Haq, managed to calm him down and get him to stop shooting. After a few minutes, he blurted out: ‘I'll give myself up.' Responding to a dispatcher's question, Haq said he was ‘wearing a green shirt, blue pants. I'm in jeans,' the police report said. ‘I'll put my gun down,' he said. ‘She says my gun is down.' Asked by a dispatcher who ‘she' was, Haq said it was Klein, ‘the woman I just shot'." Kerlikowske said of Klein: "She's a hero in my eyes." Mine too.
If Home Depot seems to be a source for jihadis, it's good for security reasons to have a coffee shop nearby. This, from the Seattle Times: "Rachel Hynes, the Jewish Education Council associate at the federation, … and several others fled to a nearby Starbucks — and ran into eight Seattle police officers on break. Someone yelled there had been a shooting. ‘All eight of them jumped up and ran out of the door,' Hynes said. ‘That's why we had police presence so fast'."
What two other columnists have noted:
To my delight, Jeff Jacoby often writes in the Boston Globe on subjects I wish I could take up, and that was the case this week. His Aug. 6 column, "A tale of 2 stories about anti-Semitism" wonders why the drunken antisemitic rant of Hollywood's Mel Gibson on July 28 became "the big national story about anti-Semitism," rather than the Haq rampage on the same day. "By any rational calculus, Jacoby argues, the latter "was far more significant" and "should have been a huge story everywhere. Yet after six days, a Nexis search turned up only 236 stories mentioning Haq—one-fourth the number dealing with Gibson's drunken outburst." Joel Mowbray also makes this point in "White washing Islamists" in the Washington Times: "The New York Times has written only one story [on Haq]. Ditto for The Washington Post. Both papers buried what little coverage they did offer on page 22 and page 13, respectively."
Mowbray also notes that the MSM devoted "fantastic energy" exploring every motive for Haq (his history of mental illness, his apparently having acted alone, his having been briefly a practicing Christian) – except the obvious one of radical Islam. Mowbray asks exactly the right questions: "Where is the investigation into what messages Mr. Haq heard in his hometown mosque, which was founded by his father? Or how about a look at the culture and attitudes of his hometown Muslim community?"
Finally, the Jewish angle:
Seattle-area Jews appear unwilling to learn the lesson Haq tried to teach them. In an oped in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, "Jewish Federation moves ahead with sacred mission," Robin Boehler, president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, writes about the murdered woman and the federation's good works, but says not a single word about the murderer, his ideology, or his motives. In fact, she does not even mention Haq by name. Rabbi Daniel Weiner of Temple De Hirsch Sinai in Seattle, quoted in a San Francisco Chronicle story, appears possibly even more clueless. He is at a loss to understand why people in the Jewish Federation building, working at what he calls "the Jewish version of the United Way," would be attacked. "To delve into the mind of a clearly troubled and disturbed person is impossible."
Judy Lash Balint, for twenty years a resident of Seattle, writing in the Jerusalem Post, explains why Jews will likely not draw the right conclusion from Haq's attack. "It's hard for some laid-back, peace-loving Jews of the Pacific NW, who are so very well integrated into the general community and hold interfaith meetings with local Muslims, to assimilate the idea that they may have become targets of Islamic fundamentalist violence. Several Seattle Jews I have spoken with since the attack said they are convinced that the perpetrator was a psychopath and not a terrorist, since he had allegedly been recently convicted of lewd conduct."

The victims and their families will, hopefully, use the civil courts to illuminate the ISNA rat nest that "nurtured" this creature. There is a history of northwest anti-semitic enterprises that have been financially drained after damages have been extracted from them, and this will hopefully be another one. It's too bad the Jews of Seattle can't bother to learn something about the teachings of the profit mahomet.

he states
Haq announced: "I want these Jews to get out. … I'm upset at your foreign policy. These are Jews. I'm tired of getting pushed around, and our people getting pushed around by the situation in the Middle East. … I'm an American too but I just want our people out of Iraq."
Well he is not a good American and apparently has not learned our laws. We elect officials to determine foreign policy and do not listen to terrorists demands. We do not kill people just to make a statement.
If he were so concerned about the Middle East situation--then by all means, buy a ticket and go to the aid of your terrorist buddies.
I hope he gets the death sentence.Deportation would be better.

You're basically repeating the slur against Catholics since this country's founding -- not intentionally, but it is certainly not true that Catholicism is inherently opposed to democracy.
Catholicism and democracy are not mutually exclusive. On the other hand, Islam (Sharia law) and democracy are mutually exclusive.
Here's more detail on current Catholic views towards civil government: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03794b.htm
Specifically:
"But though nature and God prescribe that there should be a supreme authority in the State, and that all citizens should conscientiously render due obedience to it, yet they do not determine the subject of the supreme civil authority. Whether a particular State be a monarchy, an oligarchy, or a democracy, or any combination of these forms of government, is a matter that depends on history and the character of the people. Provided that the government fulfils its function, its form in the eyes of the Catholic Church is of comparatively little importance."

The Islamic community throws up a regular supply of these lone nuts, from whom law abiding, moderate Muslims can dissociate themselves. Sometimes the attitude of these moderates towards their more violent co-religionist can look awfully like a policy of 'why bark yourself, when you have a dog to do it for you?'
