Top official says Iran might produce nuclear weapons

Now the truth is beginning to come out. Only the most bemused Canon-Peterson types will be surprised. From Iran Focus, with thanks to Arjun:

Tehran, Iran, Aug. 26 – A top Iranian official warned on Friday that Tehran may develop nuclear weapons as a “preventative measure” against threats posed by the West.

“The patience of the Iranian nation has a limit. If [the West] crosses this limit, our nation, which is very suspicious of the good will of Western countries, will force Majlis to ratify the law for Iran to withdraw from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty”, Mohammad-Reza Bahonar, the deputy speaker of Iran’s Majlis, or Parliament, said on Friday.

“The Iranian nation is facing illogical powers that have nuclear weapons and see no deterrent. If they exert pressure on us it is possible that our nation will ask the government to produce nuclear weapons as a preventative measure”, Bahonar, who is also secretary general of the Islamic Association of Engineers, said following a meeting by the group’s leaders.

A nuclear question. Does the heavy water plant mean that they can bypass the enrichment step and make a weapon faster? Anyone have any links about this process?? Thanks.

The west has undoubtledly given Iran a fat opporitunity to increase its influnence and power by the so called war on terror. Iran will definitely cease this invaluable opportunity and produce its nuclear bomb. How is that? simple ... US and Isreal are totally parallized now because of the situation in Palestine, Lebanon and Iraq. Any force confrontation with Iran will definitely cost a high price because of the huge influence of Iran in Iraq and Lebanon. Just think of the Shia majority in Iraq who are loyal to Iran. And guess what, Iran need not strike New York, there is already more than 140,000 american troops in the region and Isreal is with the range of Iranian missiles. Moreoevr, Iran is not primitive Taliban and it's not Saddam Hussein's exhausted Iraq. Iran is highly organized and heavily armed. Well yes, you can add to all this the weak legitimity of the current US administartion afters the failures in Iraq and Afaghanistan.
So what is the solution? also simple ... The west need to change its approach to the middle east politics. The war on terror in its current shape succeeded only to replace previous extremist systems with more extremist ones. One suggestion is to make more compromises in the middle east that will surely break the Iranian growing influence and bring more stabilty. For example, establishing a Pleastinian state, and giving up Golan hights to Syria. I am quite sure these advances will put an end to Irans influnce, stop Iranian threat on Israel, result in Hezbollah's disarming, and guess what ... make the Arab states Lebanon and Syria more intergrated in the international community. Prior to that, you will be surprised to see Iran sumbitting to international pressure to stop its nuclear project.

The west need to change its approach to the middle east politics.

Troll.

One suggestion is to make more compromises in the middle east

Of course, the way to appease jihad is to give in to it.

For example, establishing a Pleastinian state, and giving up Golan hights to Syria.

Yes, that will end it. Give up more land. Unfortunately, the Koran stipulates that all land must be given up, all freedoms, all women, to Allah.

No sorry. No can do. The fight starts now.

Agreed August 22. A troll indeed. Iran's threat to Israel isn't going to just stop you moron. Though they maybe heavily armed, that in no way means that they are stronger..it's just more targets for the U.S. to hit. Our next generation of weapons are hitting the battlefield as we speak. We had to unload all of our "old" weapons in Iraq to get ready for the big war...with you.

According to the liberal democrat viewpoint, the U.S. is intimidating the world, therefore everyone should be given nuclear weapons if they want them, since it's the only way to make the playing field even. In their twisted logic, the problem isn't Iran, isn't North Korea, isn't Syria, it's the U.S. and will continue to be the U.S. until we stop our hostile and unreasonable foreign policies.

Except of course they don't realize what they want is appeasement, don't realize the consequences of appeasement and certainly don't understand that the concept of mutually assured destruction goes out the window with the Islamic crowd.

And, for the most part, you can't explain it to them either. Sad, but true.

I am quite amazed with these extreme responses. In fact I thought for a moment that I can have some rational and wise discussion with you guys about the situation, but it seems s stated nicely "you can't explain it to them either. Sad, but true".

To just let you know something BIRDDDOG before you start your war with me, that I am,like the silent majority in the middle east, not interested in having a war with you. Our voices are muffled by the four powers here (US admin, Islamic fundamentalists, Corrupt Arab systems, and Isreal army) which are all claiming to pursue peace but actually only interested in their own interests. Those speak up in media every where moslty belong to any of those four. And obviously you speak here in the name of some extrmeist right wing in the west which backs the current US admin.

If you decided to be take a role in this power game, then at least dont assume everybody does. I am not in! and I will never be.

It's high time the Bush Administration detonated EMP weapons over Iranian airspace to block them from deploying weapons of mass destruction. As I said this is the one sure way we know of to COMPLETELY STOP Iran's plot to attack the western democracies with weapons of mass destruction. While we're at it, we'd better get North Korea too!!

A nuke attack on Iran won't guarantee Iran's murderous schemes will be completely thwarted (because the place is so vast, missiles in remote localities could be launched before we found them).

A nuke attack would probably fail because again the place is so vast we might not find all the weapons in time to prevent their being deployed.

Only EMPs, as far as I can see, will work. The US must do this NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Write and/or e-mail the Bush Administration and your government reps and tell them what we need to do in order to stop Iran's murderous plot cold.

Correction: I also meant to say up above that a US-led ground invasion of Iran won't stop Iran from deploying weapons of mass destruction on the western democracies--again because the place is so big geographically that weapons of mass destruction could be deployed before our troops found them. And we could save ourselves a couple of trillion dollars by NOT invading this time!

Our best hope of stopping the Iranian threat is EMP deployment over Iranian airspace.

Once again....Iran's threat to Israel isn't going to stop. Is everyone here supposed to believe that your new political agenda is going to change the way these idiots in the Middle East think? President Akabakadaklaka of Iran has way to much money invested in hezbollah. And tell me who is going to disarm them? Lebanon? Lebanon and Syria are wrapped so tight around Akababdaklak nuts they might as well be his underwear. Oh...here is my subgegation check or do you take cash? American cash looks really good in the hands of hezbollah btw. I think you should write President Bush a letter and tell him about your agenda. I'm sure he will get right on that. We are in this together...whether you want to be or not. You are the silent minority. The majority wants us dead. Peace....through superior firepower.
