Contrast that with Jesus Christ's sacrifice on Calvary. He was tortured beyond recognition. He carried a heavy cross a long way, up hill to the place of execution. He was stripped, humiliated, had thorns stuck in his head and finally had big nails driven into his hands and feet and was left to asphyxiate to death for several hours. He did this, for what? 72 maidens? No, he did this to help us. And he gave us a choice. He told us what the deal was but He didn't force us to choose it, ie., no coercion. And all He asked was for us to love Him and to love one another.

What is wrong with Islam that these young guys think they can only get laid if they kill themselves? A pro-survival belief system this is not.

They're in for a surprize. It isn't "virgins" that were promised. It's raisins, or more specifically, white grapes, a delicacy in the ancient Middle East, and a symbol of clarity, purity, insight in the ancient Semitic Christian mindset. The work of the scholar Christophe Luxemburg, a philologist who has translated the Koran using Syriac, a language closely related to Arabic, as the basis for his work, has made sense of many of the more obscure passages like this one: "They should beat their khumurs about their bags", commonly interpreted as meaning that the women should cover their heads, necks, shoulders and breasts with the hijab but in its present textual form it is conveniently regarded as one of a number of verses whose meanings were intended to remain mysteriously known to God alone (how convenient).

The Arabic theologians and editors who collated the official text of the Koran, some decades after Mohammed's death, were apparently unaware of the original text, likely a liturgical and ethical instruction used by East Syrian Christians in missionary contact with the Bedouin tribes of the Arabian peninsula, and thought to have at least some relationship to a fourth century Christian work called Hymns of Paradise, by St. Ephrem the Syrian.

Since they weren't smart enough to figure this out, I guess they may not even get their raisins. But I prefer to think that God has enough of a sense of humour and irony to go ahead and offer them this delicious reward just to see the looks on their faces.

Mohammad exploited this for his own lethal purposes. He covered women in a tent on earth, and placed them visually in a make-believe paradise so the men would die for him. He used women, real and imagined, for this purpose. He manipulated the sexual instinct.

A free woman was a fearful thing for Mohamed because she could not used as a sexual object under a tent or in a make-believe paradise. (He knew free women would put an end to this exploitation of the male sexual instinct.) Women had to be regulated in order for his system to work, and that's the foundation of this make-believe-system that exploits the visual nature of the male sexual instinct.

Mohammed was a manipulative bum, but he was no dummy. He knew how to decieve people and use them.

They cannot question. Just imagine being a muslim kid. Your father tells you that the others are infidels, that it is okay to saw off heads of animals, that it is okay to lie to infidels, that after you inflict painful death to an animal you say "allah is most merciful".

Contrast this with the way infidels' kids are brought up. Lying is bad, telling tales is bad, being cruel to animals is bad, and one is not told that he/she is superior to any other. One's superiority comes only from one's accomplishments in school or sports or arts or whatever.

They are not free to think. They are just not brought up that way.

Mohammad and Hugh Hefner both used/use the same male visual nature re women for different purposes. However, I think Mohammad's use of nature is more inhuman. It's a much more cold and calculated use of the sexual instinct. Hefner's motive is money, Mohammed's was power and he developed an elaborate system to camouflage the use of the sexual instinct. (He knew the power of the sexual instinct and the role of law in its regulation in every society.)

Other than the carnal nature that Jannah (Paradise) appeals to Muslims (esp. males), there is another element. The fact is that no Muslim is guaranteed Paradise. No Muslim knows how they will be judged on the Last Day. No Muslim knows if Allah has predestined him to be in Paradise or in Hell. In fact, the hadiths also say that they will be tormented in the graves as well. Even Muhammad had to profusely ask for forgiveness (especially near his own death ... as a result of poisoning). If they end up in Paradise, it is due to ... you guess it, Allah's mercy!

EXCEPT FOR THE MARTYR (SHAHID), that is. Muhammad in the Qur'an told his followers that they will be guaranteed Paradise if the die in jihad for Allah's cause. This is a very powerful motivation for followers of a religion that does not know if Allah is satisfied with their piety. Only the shahid is guaranteed Paradise, and the 70/72 houris (fair maidens).

Perhaps that gives you an idea why so many Muslims want to participate in jihad, and have no fear about dying as a martyr. It is the only guarantee they can ever jump at.

Interesting, but Ishaq was the first to put all that was known of Mohammad and what he said onto paper. Since Mohammad is the sorce of the Koran, and Ishaq is the ONLY sorce of the life and sayings of Mohammad, it's highly probable that Ishaq is also the sorce of the koran.

I agree that Syriac was the language in use during mohammads lifetime, Arabic was just developing as a spoken language, and wasn't a written one for quite a long time after.

As for Christian contact with those bedouin tribes, remember that Medina, and many of the other villages around Mecca that Mohammad slaughtered were primarly Jewish. This is why you see so many Jewish fables incorporated into the koran. Mohammad didn't know the difference between Jewish fables and what was written in the torah. Besides Jewish and some (very little) Christian influence in the region, There were many other influences, Sabian, Zoroastrian and Hanifs to name a few. The pagan rock worship customs of the Bedouins was Mohammads template on which he twisted these influences to fit.

Not only that he consumated his marriage with her at around the same time, despite the LIES muslims try tell to give their pedophile prophet some dignity (although claiming she was 9 doesn't say much for him either) she was still breast feeding when he raped her, which makes even 6 years old suspicious.

After that, Mohammad married 23 more, and had many sex slaves as well. Oddly, he produced no children with any except Kahdija, but they all were all sickly and died.

I was sort of referring to the Old Testament with regards to the Jews being the Apple of God's Eye, hence their insistence that they are the Chosen People etc.

But as a Christian, I realise I am worth more than many sparrows etc.. Thank God for that indeed,life seems to be valued beyond its capacity to kill innocents, and the guarantee of God's presence is not conditional on death in the way of Jihad. In moments of compassion I feel deeply sorry for all the Muslims who have such a screwed-up, loveless 'God', but then the anger for the Muslims' victims takes over.

And then again, is their paradise even worth dying for? An eternal brothel? The answers to the eternal questions at your grasp, and instead you are given 72 virgins to have fun with eternally. yes, according to Islamic beliefs, a Muslim man in Paradise is supposed to have his four wives, but they will be at four corners of his big tent so that they won't see each other (I suppose that is to make sure they don't get jealous and fight each other). And of course, he is supposed to have his 72 houris.

And so, a Muslim woman is really one out of 76 woman to the Muslim man in Jannah. The description of the houris in the Qur'an are they are fair, with black, round eyes, and Muslim scholars also say they are perpetual virgins.

This is of course in stark contrast to Jesus' words in the Bible that in heaven, there will be no marriage.

In the Qur'an, only one woman was mentioned by name, Mary, the mother of Isa (Muslim version of Jesus). All other women were mentioned as wife of so and so. From an Islamic perspective, a woman's entry into Janna depends on whether her husband is pleased with her. This assumes that a woman will be married.

I did not mean to suggest that Luxemburg's thesis is the exhaustive and complete account of the origins of the Koran. In fact, his theory, as I understand it, suggests that the Christian text is only a foundation, to which other materials were added later. Certainly, as you point out, we seem to have confusing combination of a great many different influences at work in the Koran. The relationship with Judaism, which you emphasize, is noted by those developing Luxemburg's theory.
