Spencer: Keith Ellison, CAIR, and Hamas

In FrontPage this morning I examine the CAIR connection of the Muslim candidate for Congress, Keith Ellison (news links in the original):

Keith Ellison (D-MN) is shaping up to be the first-ever Muslim member of Congress, and the mainstream media is treating his candidacy as a huge human-interest story and a triumph of multiculturalism. The Christian Science Monitor gushed that “when Keith Ellison arrives at the Karmel Square, one of Minneapolis’s Somali malls, a rock star might as well be walking by the bustling stalls of bright fabrics, jewelry, phone cards, and videos.” It quoted Larry Jacobs of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance at the University of Minnesota exulting: “You think of the stereotype of Minnesota -- Garrison Keillor and white Norwegian farmers. The first Muslim congressman coming from Minnesota? It says a lot about the changing face of the United States and Minnesota.”

Of course, not all is rosy: the Monitor notes that “conservative bloggers” and Ellison’s Republican opponent, Alan Fine, have raised questions about Ellison’s alleged ties to the Nation of Islam, as well as about a number of unpaid parking tickets that led to the suspension of his drivers’ license. But the Monitor doesn’t mention the most troubling aspect of Ellison’s record: the support he has received from the Council on American Islamic Relations.

Journalist Joel Mowbray has been virtually the only journalist who has pursued this connection, exploring in a recent column “Mr. Ellison’s seemingly tight connection with Nihad Awad, co-founder of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), whom he met almost two decades ago at the University of Minnesota.” Mowbray reports that “Mr. Awad headlined a fundraiser last month that the campaign estimates netted $15,000 to $20,000, and in July, and it appears that CAIR’s co-founder bundled contributions totaling just over $10,000. (The campaign issued a terse denial on the latter point, though it refused to explain away overwhelming evidence to the contrary.)” Faced with this evidence, Ellison’s backers have “attempted to paint attacks on the candidate as overtly partisan or even bigoted. A Minneapolis Star Tribune columnist, for example, recently suggested that Mr. Ellison is under attack solely for being Muslim.”

What is so troubling about Ellison’s connection with Awad and CAIR? Mowbray quotes the assessments of two leading Democrats: Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois has declared that CAIR “is unusual in its extreme rhetoric and its association with groups that are suspect.” New York Senator Charles Schumer, once said that CAIR “has ties to terrorism” and that Ellison’s supporter Awad has “intimate connections with Hamas.” Mowbray establishes the latter point from Awad’s own mouth, quoting his 1994 statement: “I’m in support of the Hamas movement.”

Awad himself responded to this in an AP story about Ellison’s candidacy: “I don’t support Hamas today,” he explained. “My position and CAIR’s position is extremely clear -- we condemn suicide bombings. We are mainstream American Muslims.” AP reporter Frederic Frommer added that a Republican charge that Ellison had received “financial support from a self-identified supporter of Hamas” was a “reference to Awad's 1994 statement that he preferred Hamas to the Palestinian Liberation Organization. In an interview, Awad said that was before the group engaged in suicide bombings and was designated a terrorist organization by the State Department.”

But of course, saying flatly that “I am in support of the Hamas movement” is not simply stating a preference for Hamas over the PLO. In any case, if Awad supported Hamas before 1994, it is useful to examine what that means. I have here preserved the old Hamas website’s “glory record” of attacks against Israelis – the terrorist organization’s own record of its murderous actions. Here are some of Hamas’ self-described exploits from before 1994:

3. Boureen Operation: The militant Hamdan Hussein Al:najar, a member of Hamas, killed the Israeli settler Ya’coub Berey using a big rock as his weapon. The militant was shot down as a martyr after he had ambushed an Israeli patrol using the dead settler’s weapon....

6. Bus No. 405 Operation: Militant Ahmed Hussein Shukry, a member of Hamas, was able to lead an Israeli soldier to a secluded place in Tel Aviv where the militant hit the soldier with a chisel and killed him on 8 September 1989. The following day, the militant got on bus No. 405 and stabbed the driver to take over the bus; however, the passengers were able to stop the militant....

12. Keryat Youval Operation: The militant Mohammed Mustafa Abu Jalala stabbed four Israelis and injured another at a bus station in Keryat Youval in Jerusalem before he was arrested by the Israeli forces.

13. Askalan Road Operation: While driving a taxi, the militant Jameel Ismail Al:baz, a member of Hamas, ran over a group of Israelis waiting on this road on 19 July 1991....

15. Shailou Operation: A military group belonging to Al Qassam Brigades attacked an Israeli bus carrying some settlers on their way to Tel Aviv to participate in demonstrations organized by the extremist party Likud against the peace process. The bus was completely destroyed; two Israelis were killed and five more were injured....

17. Eid Al-maskhara Operation: The militant Ra’ed Al:reefy attacked an Israeli crowd in Jaffa on 17 March 1992. He was able to kill 2 and injure 21 Israelis who gathered to celebrate Eid Al:maskhara, also known as Al:boureem.

18. Beit Lahya Operation: On the third anniversary of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin's arrest, a group belonging to Al Qassam Brigades attacked an Israeli settler at Beit Lahya and shot him down then withdrew safely....

21. Carlo Factory Operation: Four militants belonging to Al Qassam Brigades broke into a citrus packing factory (Carlo) near Nahal Oaz at 2:30 p.m. on 25 June 1992. Three militants stabbed two Israelis while the other was guarding....

Suicide bombings? No. Terrorist attacks on civilians? Sure. And there are many, many more on the list dating from before 1994. So are we to understand that Awad supported such operations and only stopped supporting Hamas later, although these was no change in its ideology and no change in its taste for victimizing civilians?

When Awad says that he and CAIR do not support Hamas today, it should be recalled that in March 2004, when Hamas leader Sheikh Yassin was killed by Israel, CAIR condemned his killing -- without ever mentioning that Yassin was the mastermind and director of suicide killings for Hamas: “We condemn this violation of international law as an act of state terrorism by Ariel Sharon's out-of-control government. Israel’s extra-judicial killing of an Islamic religious leader can only serve to perpetuate the cycle of violence throughout the region. The international community must now take concrete steps to help protect the Palestinian people against such wanton Israeli violence.”

When did CAIR stop supporting Hamas? On Monday I searched the CAIR website for “Hamas.” There are three possible searches: News Briefs, Action Alerts, and Press Releases. Only News Briefs turned up anything at all: an old article from Haaretz attacking Ariel Sharon.

So if CAIR now condemns Hamas, where is it saying so? Just in the lower paragraphs of articles about other subjects? We can’t even get one press release about it? Not one Action Alert calling on Muslims everywhere to condemn Hamas?

Before Minnesotans elect Keith Ellison to Congress, they need to know the answers to these questions.

Hi,

I really enjoy reading this blog.

This isn't quite what your post was discussing, but I think it may add to your post a little. Over here in New Zealand we have a situation where a small fundementalist christian group (The Exclusive Brethren) hired a Private Investigator to "dig" into the dealings of members of our government. The P.I. found plenty of dirt and two cases were made public. The government deplored the action of the EB, the used extremely strong language to describe how there was no place in our society for such a group and are in the process of legally punishing the group. Of course the MainStream Media "put the boot in" too.

Now, cast your mind back to the time of the London bombings. Our government was quick to promote Muslims' as fine upstanding members of New Zealand society and the phrase "religous tolerance" couldn't be spoken enough by them.

It was alarming how quickly "religious tolerance" was replaced with innuendo and manipulation to divert attention away from bigger topics.

A Muslim running for Congress coming from Minnesota? It figures-leave it to a lefty state to put up an apologist like that for such an office. My only surprise is that California or Massachusetts didn't beat them to it (but I'm sure they'll contribute in the future).

The answer is simple: total brainwashing by the media combined with a mentality of victimhood.

Cair's Nihad Awad argues that he stopped supporting Hamas after 1994 because of suicide bombings . Robert points out that there where numerous attacks on Israelis citizens by hamas members prior to 1994.

But one should ask this question: did Awad read the 36 articles of the Hamas Charter prior to giving support to Hamas?

Did he support the charter as it was written by authors like Yassin?

The Hamas charter surfaced around 1986, nearly 20 years ago and Nihad Awad had 8 years to read those 36 articles of the Hamas Charter prior to 1994.

Ellison is originally from Detroit and converted to Islam at Wayne State U. Nation of Islam is really strong here, but in the past the Nation of Islam folks did not get along with other Muslims. Somehow, the two groups started seeing eye to eye a lot more in the past five years.

Typical-these guys hate each other but they always close ranks against us infidels in their efforts to bring us a "peaceful" world. Do they REALLY think the world will be all peaches and cream if they rule the world? Not bloody likely.

Even if he wasn't connected to CAIR, it would be bad enough to have a Muslim elected to Congress. I wonder if Schumer, who is all over every issue, is in fact showing his solidarity as a Democrat and supporting this guy despite the CAIR-Hamas connection.

If Keith Ellison is elected to Congress, it will be one more nail in our national and cultural coffin.

By pure coincidence, I was reading up on Mr. Ellison last night.

http://www.homelandsecurityus.com/site/modules/news/article.php?storyid=606

"Islam is unique to all other religions as it strictly imposes its own legal system upon its followers – Islamic jurisprudence via the Qu’ran and the Hadith above all other forms of governance. In other words, an orthodox Muslim is required, through the tenants of the Islamic faith, to subjugate all forms of government to the doctrine of Islam as outlined in the Qu’ran and Hadith."

"Having established, then, that a true follower of Islam is required to make decisions based not on constitutional law but on the basis of Sharia, one must ask whether a Muslim can be a suitable candidate for a political office in the US by virtue of this fact alone."

It will be interesting to see how Mr. Ellison, and the Democratic party spin this.

"In the seventh century of the Christian era, a wandering Arab of the lineage of Hagar [i.e., Muhammad], the Egyptian, combining the powers of transcendent genius, with the preternatural energy of a fanatic, and the fraudulent spirit of an impostor, proclaimed himself as a messenger from Heaven, and spread desolation and delusion over an extensive portion of the earth. Adopting from the sublime conception of the Mosaic law, the doctrine of one omnipotent God; he connected indissolubly with it, the audacious falsehood, that he was himself his prophet and apostle. Adopting from the new Revelation of Jesus, the faith and hope of immortal life, and of future retribution, he humbled it to the dust by adapting all the rewards and sanctions of his religion to the gratification of the sexual passion. He poisoned the sources of human felicity at the fountain, by degrading the condition of the female sex, and the allowance of polygamy; and he declared undistinguishing and exterminating war, as a part of his religion, against all the rest of mankind. THE ESSENCE OF HIS DOCTRINE WAS VIOLENCE AND LUST: TO EXALT THE BRUTAL OVER THE SPIRITUAL PART OF HUMAN NATURE (Foehammer's note: Adam's capital letters as originally printed)....Between these two religions, thus contrasted in their characters, a war of twelve hundred years has already raged. The war is yet flagrant...While the merciless and dissolute dogmas of the false prophet shall furnish motives to human action, there can never be peace upon earth, and good will towards men."

I am embarassed to admit that I live in Minnesota. It is discusting to me that the Liberal Lefties are so proud of all of the Modern Diversity and Tolerance etc. BLA BLA BLA...

It's a sad state of affairs here, the two main newspapers are far left papers i.e. Star Tribune, Pioneer Press, as well as all of the Local TV. They put there Lefty spin on everything and it's sickening. I would encourage everyone and any one to write a letter to the editor and tell the people why this is so Dangerous.

BTW the if you look at the 2004 election map the entire state is Red with the exception of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis / St. Paul.)

There is No Way that we should allow this Cancer to infiltrate our government.

I am new to this site and am really getting quite an education on Islime.

Who is Keith Ellison?

By Katherine Kersten

In her Star Tribune column tomorrow, Katherine Kersten takes a look at the DFL-endorsed candidate for Congress in Minnesota's Fifth District: "Let's not forget Ellison's support of Nation of Islam." She writes:

State Rep. Keith Ellison of Minneapolis is the DFL-endorsed candidate for the Fifth District congressional seat. In this DFL bastion, that means that -- barring a primary loss -- Ellison will succeed Martin Sabo when Congress reconvenes next year.

Ellison's background is, shall we say, unorthodox. He is a former outspoken supporter of Louis Farrakhan's notorious Nation of Islam, a virulently anti-white, anti-Semitic organization once led by Black Muslim leader Elijah Muhammad.

Ellison apparently first came to public attention in 1989, when, using the name Keith E. Hakim, he defended Farrakhan in a Minnesota Daily article while a law student at the University of Minnesota. In a 1990 Daily column, Ellison claimed that splitting America into two nations, with five Southern states set aside for blacks, would be preferable to "liberal social programs."

"Black-white interaction would be voluntary instead of compelled," he wrote.

In 1995, Ellison helped organize Minnesota participation in the Million Man March in Washington, D.C., which the Nation of Islam convened. At a fundraiser for the event, he shared the stage with Khalid Abdul Muhammad, who described himself as Farrakhan's "flamethrower." In 1994, according to the Washington Post, Khalid had called Jews "the bloodsuckers of the black nation."

Here in Minneapolis, at the event where Ellison shared the stage with him, Khalid delivered "racist ranting," according to a Star Tribune article. "If words were swords," said the article, "the chests of Jews, gays and whites would be pierced."

During the 1990s, Ellison articulated extreme views on other occasions. In 1992, he spoke at a Minneapolis protest rally after a Los Angeles jury acquitted police of beating Rodney King. "Black people do not live under a democracy," he told the crowd. "You don't have an obligation to obey a government that considers you to be less than human." In 1997, Ellison publicly supported Joanne Jackson, executive director of the Minneapolis Initiative Against Racism, after she allegedly stated that Jews were "among the most racist white people."

In 1998, the Star Tribune described Ellison as "well-known in the black community as ... a supporter of Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam." Ellison says he can't recall seeing the article or seeking a correction. No correction was published.

Last week, Ellison moved to do damage control, as his background came under increasing scrutiny. He only had ties to the Nation of Islam for about 18 months in the mid-1990s, he told the Star Tribune. In a letter to the Jewish Community Relations Council, Ellison repudiated Farrakhan's and Khalid Muhammad's views, and rejected racism, anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination. "This has always been my position," he wrote.

Reached Wednesday, Ellison said he broke his ties with the Nation of Islam when "it became clear to me that their message of empowerment intertwined with more negative messages."

Can people change? Of course they can. Ellison now says he is fit to serve all of the Fifth District's citizens.

But Minnesotans are right to question his candor and judgment. Apparently, Ellison has not been fully candid about the duration of his support for the Nation of Islam. In fact, today he insists that he never shared the organization's extremist views. The record raises questions about that.

Ellison says that he broke with the Nation of Islam when "it became clear to me that their message of empowerment intertwined with more negative messages." Ellison himself was the purveyor of the Nation of Islam's "more negative messages" from at least 1989, as demonstrated, among other things, by his 1997 statement to the board of the Minnesota Initiative Against Racism in defense of Joanne Jackson. Indeed, Ellison was a purveyor of the Nation of Islam party line in every public utterance touching on related issues. Will Ellison acknowledge the falsity of his alleged 18-month affiliation with the Nation of Islam? When did Ellison affiliate himself with the Nation of Islam? When did Ellison break with the Nation of Islam?

You are right. When it serves his purpose, he will suddenly turn over many new leaves just like Arafat and the thug of Iran. While these people are presenting themselves as supporters of everything but the cult of Islam, they are very carefully installing knives in everyone’s back. I wouldn’t let him babysit my children, but I wonder how many buddies he has that are already in Congress. Maybe I should turn over a new leaf and do something about my suspicious thinking. I could be "racist" and not know it.

How many Muslims do you know who are called 'Keith' ? Practically every Western convert takes a new name in order to dissociate themselves from their previous lives and western culture . I didn't particularly like Cat Stevens before his embrace of insanity, but who would buy his albums with the name 'Yousif Islam' on the cover ? Methinks 'Keith' has likewise taken a new identity but knows that if he were to reveal it now then his chances of Congress would be about the same as those of a snowball in Hell .
Politicians , eh ? Can they be trusted to tell the truth any time ?

njreed :
There is no reason whatsoever to be ashamed of being a resident of Minnesota.
I imagine that by far the majority of citizens of that state are decent , honourable and hard-working , as they are in every state ... yes , even California . You have a privelege that you should ensure that as many of your state's residents as possible use : A VOTE . Use it wisely .
PS FYI I'm British but hugely admire the USA . You saved our butts in two world wars and what thanks did you get from most Europeans ? Well, I for one recognise your sacrifice and am grateful to you all .

What could possibly turn a man born in freedom, to lower himself to become a muslim male?.

Here is Ahmad's story:
I'm a young male and was born into "freedom" but because of my small stature, bad teeth, pitted skin, large nose, small chin and my squeeky voice, I could never find a girlfriend or fit in with society in general. I was insecure in my appearance and mannerisms and was constantly teased by others. I was always angry and my schoolwork was failing.

Then one day I visited a Mosque and, Lo and Behold, I discovered my appearance wasn't an issue anymore because all the other men in the Mosque were similarly unattractive, and I could grow my beard to hide my face anyway. Muslims didn't need to study hard anymore; they just need to memorise the Qur'an. I discovered my small stature didn't make me feel impotent anymore, because the power of Jihad energized me. Most amazing, I discovered I (as a Muslim male) could rule over women and the first (of several, I hope)brides, was recently assigned to me. Additionally I learned that non-Muslims are filth and will spend eternity in Hell so the decision to become a Muslim was quite easy.

I hope that answers your question. Peace,
Ahmed Mohammad al-Kuffari

If outing Ellison's past associations with nefarious Muslim organizations, and his relevant beliefs, is the most effective strategy to prevent him from being elected to the U.S. congress, then that is what should be done.

But that won't stop other 'clean' Muslims from running in the future.

I think the Ellison campaign is an excellent opportunity to expose the American public not just to the concept of Islamic law, but to its incompatibility with the U.S. Constitution and laws.

I'm in the process of faxing this letter to every member of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives:

Senator,

The following letter was published in the July 5, 2006 edition of the Lansing State Journal.

It was written by an American Muslim woman who teaches kindergartners at an Islamic Sunday School.

Islam or death

I read Le Roy Barnett's letter ("Muslims, speak up," June 26) about Muslims' opinion on Abdul Rahman's conversion to Christianity.

Islam is not only a religion, it is a complete way of life. Islam guides Muslims from birth to grave. The Quran and prophet Muhammad's words and practical application of Quran in life cannot be changed.

Islam is a guide for humanity, for all times, until the day of judgment. It is forbidden in Islam to convert to any other religion. The penalty is death. There is no disagreement about it.

Islam is being embraced by people of other faiths all the time. They should know they can embrace Islam, but cannot get out. This rule is not made by Muslims; it is the supreme law of God.

Please do not ask us Muslims to pick some rules and disregard other rules. Muslims are supposed to embrace Islam in its totality.

Nazra Quraishi
East Lansing

According to Ms.Quraishi, God has commanded Muslims to murder those who leave Islam.

I think of her letter every time I read, or hear someone say, that Islam has been hijacked by extremists.

And I hope that you will, too.

Sincerely,

xxxxx

Xero G, I always thought it was because it fit their lifestyle. The stealing, raping, beating, pedophilia and basic lack of responsibility was what drew the males to islam.

We (I believe as most Americans) grew up with the Golden Rule. We know islam doesn't prescribe to that. If a person isn't a criminal, islam shouldn't be a draw.

So basically what Achmed was saying was , islam is for losers, outcasts and those with no self confidence. I, myself , still believe it has to do with a criminal mentality instead of insecurity.

People who don't live in Minnesota's 5th district or even Minnesota the state I proudly call home should mind their own business. Unfortunatly the story posted here does not give the full story.

He is not under attack for being Muslim, thats not how we do things in Minnesota. It was being noted that he belonged to the Nation of Islam and had gotten in trouble with the goverment. (He failed to pay a parking ticket and report campaign finances on time.)

He seems pretty normal and his stated agenda is too. If he is such an evil Muslim jihadist why was he endorsed by the leaders of the Twin Cities large Jewish Community.

You morons who don't even know what you're arguing about go spouting the same thing no matter what the discussion topic is should just leave.

Former CAIR Chairman Omar Ahmad: "At the Islamic Association of Palestine's third annual convention in Chicago in November 1999, CAIR President Omar Ahmad gave a speech at a youth session praising suicide bombers who "kill themselves for Islam." "Fighting for freedom, fighting for Islam — that is not suicide. They kill themselves for Islam"

http://www.washtimes.com/op-ed/20040316-085118-1135r.htm

I doubt that Awad and Ahmad had any disagreement on that statement. CAIR needs to be removed from Western society as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

Freewoman, "Criminal mentality" does seem to be a reoccuring thread in the makeup of Muslim converts. The more criminally inclined, the more likely, I suppose, to act out violent jihad. I was thinking about Adam Gadahn when I considered the role insecurity played in converting to Islam. Maybe the converts by way of "insecurity/being a loser" become the more "moderate" Muslims and the criminally inclined become the Jihadists. Either way, it's the allure of a "power-trip"; a craving to feel superior to others.

Posted by: Xero G [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 28, 2006 2:20 AM

What could possibly turn a man born in freedom, to lower himself to become a muslim male?

Why don't you ask Ahmad Rashad (a.k.a. Bobby Moore) or Karim Abdul Jabbar (a.k.a. Lewis Alcindor) or countless other pro athletes, and or clebrities (among others) who have committed to the Religion of "Peace" via conversion whilest making their fortune in the USA. Seems very hypocritical to me!
