Hanafi has been labeled an apostate, and as with the case of Abdul Rahman, those who would spare him the death sentence for apostasy are instead questioning his sanity. From Gulf News: "Professor under clerical fire for 'disparaging' Quran"
Cairo: An Egyptian university professor has angered Muslim clerics for his slur against the Holy Quran.
Hassan Hanafi, a professor of philosophy, has reportedly likened the Muslims' holy scriptures to a "supermarket from which we can take what suits us and leave what does not suit us". He has allegedly said that the names of God are contradictory and "indicate a despotic nature of the Creator".
Hanafi was not immediately available for comment. But his remarks, widely reported in local newspapers, have drawn condemnations from Muslim clergy.
Abhorrent views
"Hanafi must have uttered such abhorrent views because he is a Marxist," Abdul Sabour Shahin, a professor of Islamic Sharia told Gulf News.
Shahin denied he has demanded Hanafi be put to death.
"The best way to deal with people like him [Hanafi] is to ignore them completely," added Shahin. Hanafi is not the first Egyptian academic to rouse Muslim clerics' wrath for going public with his beliefs.
In 1993, Nasr Hamed Abu Zeid, a professor of Islamic studies, was taken to court because of his writings, which Islamists viewed as blasphemous.
They filed a lawsuit, demanding that his wife, a professor of French literature, divorce him on the grounds he was an apostate. A local court ruled in the Islamists' favour, prompting the couple to flee Egypt to The Netherlands where they have settled.
"What Hanafi said came as no surprise me," said Shaikh Moustafa Al Shakaa of the Islamic Research Centre, an influential arm of Al Azhar, which is the Sunnis' top institution.
"I have known him [Hanafi] for more than 25 years. Sometimes he speaks about Islam in the best possible terms, but at other times he has nothing good to say about this faith," Al Shakaa told this newspaper. "This proves he has a psychiatric disorder."
Al Shakaa said that under Islam, if a Muslim proved to be an apostate, he deserved to be killed. "But I think Hanafi needs treatment, not killing."

I too have this 'psychiatric disorder' though even more so. I have nothing good to say about this 'faith' whatsoever.

This is the muslim anwer when they go on a killing spree or try like the student in North Carolina, or the loser muslim who killed a Jewish women in Seattle, etc, or if you talk honestly about the koran, the label is: ""This proves he has a psychiatric disorder."

Sounds to me like he already received proper treatment, because he seems to understand that Islam is garbage.

...has reportedly likened the Muslims' holy scriptures to a "supermarket from which we can take what suits us and leave what does not suit us".
And is this not what Islamic Fascists are doing - exactly? Quote after quote - ad nauseum - it fills the air. Usually right after they violently destroy innocent people's lives - including Muslims, and especially women and children.
It never ceases to amaze me that criticism - in any form - is despised by Islamics. And when news media reports that something has "angered" Muslims, you can bet your ass that the "anger" means violence - not debate. "Discussion" of Koranic verse hypocrisy is always followed by someone dying - and they were not, in most cases, involved in the debate.
I've never seen a religion so easy to criminalize yet arrogantly postulating it's own superiority. And "victimizing" it's adherents immediately upon hearing criticism it so justly deserves.

Does everyone here recognize that Christianity & Judaism are false religions built upon elaborate and historically incorrect myths?
Have you read your Bible?
Listen to God's genocidal command to King Saul:
"Thus says the LORD of hosts, 'I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, how he set himself against him on the way while he was coming up from Egypt. Now go and strike Amalek and utterly destroy all that he has, and do not spare him; but put to death both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.'"
Violence of this sort is common throughout the history of all the monotheistic religions, including Islam. Christians were genocidal numerous times throughout the dismal history of Christianity.
Christians killed millions as they spread from Europe to the New World to global colonial powers to post-Christian secular nations. You people should remember your own history before slandering a billion Muslims with your prejudice, hate and irrational fear.

William, I love Seinfeld too. I wouldn't say all muslims are mentally twisted, but of the two, shaikh moustafa al whatever is my bet. "Not that there's anything wrong with that."

David, "he did it too" excuses nothing. Other people's sins do not expiate yours. As for slander, truth is an absolute defense to that charge.

Sound like Hassan Hanafi could use a good steak dinner. Anyone want to send him a certificate to Ruth Criss's steakhouse? He ought to have a real good Burgandy with it. (Missouri wine from a "flyover" state)
God Willing, of course.

If memory serves, Muslims believe that psychotics are specially touched by Allah, and must not be interfered with. So designating someone who has chosen to leave Islam as "psychotic" provides a neat excuse to avoid doing something naughty, like executing that apostate, on those occasions when the whole world is watching.

Hassan Hanafi, a professor of philosophy, has reportedly likened the Muslims' holy scriptures to a "supermarket from which we can take what suits us and leave what does not suit us".
47:25. "Verily, those who have turned back* (have apostated) as disbelievers after the guidance has been manifested to them, Shaitan (Satan) has beautified for them (their false hopes), and (Allah) prolonged their term (age). 47:26. This is because they said to those who hate what Allah has sent down: "We will obey you in part of the matter," but Allah knows their secrets. 47:27. Then how (will it be) when the angels will take their souls at death, smiting their faces and their backs?"

David Mathews accuses "you people" of slandering a billion Muslims...just after he slandered all Jews and Christians with an OT passage that they don't follow.
David, let me help you come to the present, and the point. The topic of this thread is about an alleged apostate being threatened by some Muslims. Somehow, you need to bring yourself to deal with the topic of this thread. Or is that too much to ask?

As usual, the cardinal sin of this "faith" is to ask questions. If it is so strong and true why should any questions put to it or about be regarded as an attack to be punished in the harshest possible terms?

David Mathews;
Christians never are, the church was. Study to know the diffrence.

David Mathews,
You have totally misunderstood this site.
We are not against Muslims, but against Islam.
If one is, say, fighting against drug trade, he would fight against the drug, but it would be silly to fight against the addicts.
If we don't fight against Islam now, we could be the Muslims of the future.
Do you want to allow Islam to expand and reach its future goals, making us brainwashed creatures, deprived of elemental rights (especially women), humiliated, etc, etc.?

Ha ha. Anyone who questions the Quran has a psychiatric disorder. Go back to the Dark Ages you fools. It goes to show how the Nation of Islam is a nation of ignorance. What else can be expected when they base their lives on the teachings/desires/lusts of a 5th century tyrant.

Anybody who follows the Koran is a flipped-out nut-case! The only way they can kill or martyr themselves is when they are smashed-out of their minds on Heroin! Show me one of them with a full set of teeth, and I'll show you a Tiger! Heroin will rott your teeth out!
