SEIZURES of smuggled radioactive material capable of making a terrorist “dirty bomb” have doubled in the past four years, according to official figures seen by The Times.Smugglers have been caught trying to traffick dangerous radioactive material more than 300 times since 2002, statistics from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) show. Most of the incidents are understood to have occurred in Europe.
The disclosures come as al-Qaeda is known to be intensfiying its efforts to obtain a radoactive device. Last year, Western security services, including MI5 and MI6, thwarted 16 attempts to smuggle plutonium or uranium. On two occasions small quantities of highly enriched uranium were reported missing. All were feared to have been destined for terror groups.

The FBI had been looking for radio active materical when they drive around mosques in Dearborn,Mich. the reasons are likely from the above statements. perhaps if we are fortunate enough no dirty bombs will be used by these muslim terrorists, but in a few years they will come down with some strange sickness from handling such material.

I don't think I'm wrong with this question/statement, but why bother with the smuggling and high apprehension rate while attempting to sneak in these materials? Why not use explosives and find your targets that already have alot of biowaste,chemical,etc. that are located around a populated area and maybe try to find some one local to do it and take the credit after he/she is apprehended or dead? If the jihadists had nuclear bombs, as some say they do, I doubt they would be going to such lengths to amass radioactive material for a mickey mouse dirty bomb. They are a bunch of jokers.
But radioactive material is easy to get. All you need to do is buy lots of smoke detectors. They all of americium-241 in them. A small amount, so you buy several thousand of them. Of course, being as stupid as they are, they would probably place an order for 10,000 smoke detectors, to set off alarm bells.
Excuse me, Wal-mart sales person. Which aisle has your smoke detectors.

I wonder why you giving the enemy (being stupid as they are) hints at obtaining classified materials.., are you still upset that august 22 was a flop ?

Is that why those guys who were arrested with the cell phone scam wanted them?
I recall the cops saying the guys had removed the batteries of several phones before getting caught.
What were they really up to? Making a very very tiny bomb just for kicks?
If I was a terrorist, I'd simply take over Pakistan and take over his weapons. Or, more fun, take over N Korea in a hidden coup.
I doubt their dicks falling off would prevent them. They'd be told it was all the will of allah.

Yes, they are mickey mouse. It is nothing more than some explosive with some radioactive material to blow up. Doesn't really compare to an atomic bomb which is what al-qaeda boasts they have.
Obtaining classified materials? Since when is a smoke detector 'classified material'?
August 22 was not a flop. My day went very smoothly as I can remember.

Two reasons. One, they dont care how many times they fail.
Two, a dirty bomb would would leave a large area radioactive for an extended period of time. The initial damage would be exaserbated by long term illness and the economic damage of a large metro area being vacated.
