This is going to require a major overhaul. From AFP, with thanks to Sr. Soph:
RIYADH - Saudi Arabia, homeland of 15 out of 19 of the September 11, 2001 hijackers in the United States, is readying a more moderate Islam curriculum for use in the kingdom’s schools, a report said on Sunday. The text books, which will be used from the first year of primary until the third year of secondary school, are due to be rolled out from the September 2007 school year, the Okaz daily said.
“The (education) ministry’s objective is to encourage pupils and teachers to be reflective and innovative,” the paper quoted a ministry official as saying.

Yes, the students will "reflect" on the September 11 attacks and "innovate" new ways to fly airliners into buildings.

Wow one more year of the ol' textbook. Next year they'll teach "How to behead an infadel with a plastic butter knife" that sounds moderate to me.

What? Saudia Arabia going on the reform trail? You got to be kidding. Who is kidding whom here? It's like the saying: "If you cannot convince them [that we are lying], confuse them". [my words added in brackets].
The Wahabi brand Islam and its clerics are powerful in Saudia Arabia. They made deals with the ruling Saud family by extrating many concessions from the ruling Saud family in order for the latter to gain legitimacy. One of the main institution they control is educational institution with publishing of books and the Sharia propangada in the tighly controlled mass media. The money also is important. the Salafi and Wahabi brands of Islamic extremism both emerged and grew out of Saudi Arabia. They have trained countless fundamentalist clerics and teachers from other muslim countries in the hope of starting a new beginning of Islamic revival and secular state takeover. All their theological schools are in the hand of hardline Wahabi and Salafi islamists. These are the ideologues, who not only preach Jihad, but create highly bureaucratized organizations to funnel money in order to recruit anyone who is willing to die for their twisted cause.
Teach moderate Islam? That's revolutionary for Saudia Arabia. They need to "De-islamize" the teachers themselves. Who is kidding whom here. By why do this anyway? It is face paint, just words only and no substance. What is needed is an overthrow of the Saudi Whahabi brand of Islam. The hatred is not only for against Jews and Christians, it is also against other muslim nationalities. Many Moroccans guest workers and Filipinos maids were killed under very suspisious conditions. In cases of guest workers it is because they found beer bottles or other material that are deemed profane. In the cases of the girl maids who are muslims, it is even shoking, the sexual abuse is rampant, and when they speak out they are silenced because these maids work with highly influencial families. What is most sad, is that they lie about the cause of deaths to the families of the deceased and they provide a hefty monetary compensation. Petro dollars, they used to grow in trees in Saudi Arabia.
It is a one of the most brutal, barbaric regime in the world. It is all done in the name of Islam. Saudi Arabia is the hotbed and the mother rock of all the islamic fundamentalisms (Tabilan, Hamas, Al Quaida, Salafist groups you name it) All lead to Arabia. They supported it through the Wahabi "fascist" ideology and the most damning thing and important thing is the finacial support by the petro dollars.
When you have Saudi clerics all throughout the Middle East TV stations saying without hesitation and doubt and with conviction and zeal: "Islam will reconquer the 10th to 13th Century Muslim Spanish kingdoms of Cordoba, Sevilla and Grenada to attain its glory through Allah's will." One knows that something is wrong. It is a new brand of religious fascism that the West has never experienced. The irony is that it is as if it is natural in Saudia Arabia. The current US government and other nations in the West are complicit to this ideas. While the wars are raging in Iraq, Afghanistan, and terror strikes in the Britain, Spain and US, the real real culprit is Saudia Arabia.
Teach moderate Islam in Saudia Arabia?? I may give it a chance in Algeria or Jordan. Saudia Arabia? that's a fantasy. There is no moderation in Islam. It is either black or white.

It's all black. No contrast.

A true reform will happen right around the time the Vulcans discover Earth. Anything that will be found in a Saudi textbook will still be BS. Instead of saying "it's nice to kill Jews" the textbooks will probably lighten up by saying "killing Jews is alright ONLY under the following 72 circumstances.......". Some moderation that will be, but at least the Saudis can claim they did something nice.

If true, it would mean it only took them six years from 9/11. But they've claimed that they made changes so many times that how can you believe them.
When the Saudis don't want to do something, they act as if they are powerless or we don't understand the forces at work in their society. Are they or are they not an absolute monarchy?
Also, just because they remove words from a textbook doesn't mean that teachers can't still teach the same messages. It isn't as though there are infidels monitoring every classroom.
