It's an interesting statistic that more books are translated into Spanish in one year than have been translated into Arabic in a 1000 years.
The significance of this is that, as has been pointed out by critics of Edward Said, Muslims have very little interest in the civilisation of others. They attribute sinister motives, such as a desire to dominate or carry out espionage, to people who do research into theirs. That is unless those people's research takes the form of being spoon fed by Muslims who tell them as much as they want them to know - or straightforward misrepresentations of islam. There are others, of course, who want to toady to Islam even before they've found out much about it and aren't going to let any inconvenient facts interfere with their rosy view of the religion.
In late nineteenth century spy thrillers enemy agents were always trying to get hold of 'the plans of the fort'. It's as though Redeker had revealed the plans of the Muslim fort in a freely available public newspaaper.
