The Ka'ba in Mecca

Apple's "Mecca Project" as pictured on the Islamic website

The real thing in New York
"Apple's 'Mecca Project' Provokes Muslim Reaction," from MEMRI, with thanks to all who sent this in:
On October 10, 2006, an Islamic website posted a message alerting Muslims to what it claims is a new insult to Islam. According to the message, the cube-shaped building which is being constructed in New York City, on Fifth Avenue between 58th and 59th Streets in midtown Manhattan, is clearly meant to provoke Muslims. The fact that the building resembles the Ka'ba (see picture below), is called "Apple Mecca," is intended to be open 24 hours a day like the Ka'ba, and moreover, contains bars selling alcoholic beverages, constitutes a blatant insult to Islam. The message urges Muslims to spread this alert, in hope that "Muslims will be able to stop the project."
The only problem is that the project is finished, and the actual building doesn't look like the Ka'ba at all, unless all cube-shaped structures are forbidden to infidels. You can see it above and get more from MacDailyNews (thanks to Andreas).

I guess we can add "Infidels building cube shapped buildings" to Hugh's list of things that enrage Muslims and make them violent. Sigh.
How could this maniacal cult be the world's fastest growing religion?

Sometimes I wonder if there are a set of muslims whose sole jobs are to seek out anything that could be remotely considered as insulting to Islam.

Hugh has it right with # 94 from his list... Everything.
Muslims - it's not always about you, you bunch of narcissistic meglomaniacs. You're self absorbed just like your Example - Mohammed.
Charles Manson and Squeaky Fromme got nuttin' on you.

Now cubes are off-limits. Is that why some restaurants serve drinks with ice shaped like half moons? Does that do double-duty - both avoiding the Kaaba form and honoring Islam's origin as a moon-worshiping cult?

Actually, the concept of Mecca isn't new for Steve Jobs. Anybody remember that when Microsoft was contemplating Windows NT 5.0, they had given it the code name Cairo, and Steve Jobs' company NEXT, Inc. had a project going code-named 'Mecca', which was contemplated as the future generation of OpenStep, or a portable object-oriented OS+development system that could be staged on Unix or Windows.
Given that NEXT had been merged into Apple when they hired Steve Jobs back, the project would presumably have made its way into the current Mac OS-X. Only difference here is Apple making a building and calling it that.
I think it's inappropriate for Apple to call a building Mecca in the same city that had 9/11 - not out of deference to Muslims, but to avoid honoring the epicenter of the longest running totalitarian ideology on the planet. The building is up, fine, but call it something else - maybe I-Cube? Haven't New Yorkers suffered enough?

NYC SCARE: SMALL PLANE CRASHES INTO HIGH-RISE ON UPPER EAST SIDE
Could it be related? FBI is claiming terrorism at this point; I suspect they will back peddle in about two hours -- unless this is just the opening salvo agian.

FYI, SPEAKING OF BUILDINGS IN NYC!!!
Small plane hits 50 story bldg. on 72nd St. 2 dead, people trapped on upper floors, 4 alarms issued, planes scrambled over all major cities in the U.S.
They are saying "not terror related" but makes you wonder, its 10-11-06, its Ramadan, its fits dirty bomb tactics, plane flew straight into bldg, Feds. haz-mat on scene, NYC. airports on hold, etc.

The nutjobs of izlam will be calling this "the hand of allah" whether the pilot had a heart attack or turns out to have been a jihad...
I'm thinking it was a jihadi since he came from jersey--straight east to Manhattan and the East River

Apple (specifically Steve Jobs) does have a thing for cubes after all:
http://www.theapplecollection.com/design/macreleased/Cube072000.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NeXT
With this cube shaped building, the Apple faithful (as fanatical as your average Muslim) would walk around the Ka'ba shaped building and throw stones at the devil. The devil in this case being Bill Gates.

On the other hand, at the American Museum of Natural History, meteorites -- just like the Magic Wonderstone inside the Ka'aba -- are on public display in New York, where anyone can gawk at them.
Possible proximate cause for murder and mayhem?

My Rubik's cube also resembles the Ka'aba. I like playing with it though.

I guess "GameCube" is also an "insult" to Islam.
Proud Infidel asked:
"How could this maniacal cult be the world's fastest growing religion?"
It's easy. It doesn't require any thought or intelligence. All it requires from its proponents is the ability to blame and become enraged.
You can't have an easier "religion" than that.

"Prepare for our strike, brothers! The Mac-wielding infidels will never know what hit them! A thousand curses on OS-10! Let us attack now!...Hmm, that's funny. It's not here. All there is is this big dumb clear building! Again, the infidels insult us! They tricked us into thinking they had insulted islam with a big black building! Oooooh, those idolaters!"
In other note, though, only Apple would think they're important enough to have a "Mecca". PC users just bloody get on without the aid of trite commercials and the dubious endorsement of Jeff Goldblum.

I love(d) 'religious' wars when it came to computers - there was once several prospective choices - OS/2-PPC, NT-Alpha, NEXT-Sparc, NEXT-PA/RISC, Mac-PPC. All that has changed, and now, all that's there is Mac-Intel, Wintel, Lintel, Linux-Sparc. What a drab.
Guess it's back to Islam vs Christian vs Jew vs....

Here's what happened in NYC. Hope cross-posting is OK.
...............
I saw a news update on the subject right before switching over to watch the playoff game between my team, the Oakland As, and the Detroit Tigers. My husband was (lucky guy) at the game watching live.
I hoped that the crash wasn't an act of terrorism. It seemed unlikely--light plane, fancy but not famous Upper East Side condo. Not impossible, though--anyone remember the crash of a light plane Into a well-known local downtown building in St. Petersburg, Florida, shortly after 9/11?
This was a terrorist act (in sympathy with Al-Qaeda) by an extremely stupid teenage student pilot who didn't seem to realize that such a light plane would do little damage to a modern high rise building. The only casualty was the pilot himself.
Anyway, here is why I included the very OT reference to the baseball game--turns out the plane in NYC was piloted by Pitcher Cory Lidle, now with the NY Yankees (formerly starting pitcher with the As).
He was apparently quite an accomplished student pilot, who was flying with his instructor. While it is not entirely clear yet what happened, I think it is completely safe to say that this was *an accident*. The only lucky thing is that no one was home in the apartments at the time of the crash.
Very sad.

i always wondered if the inspiration for the black monolith in Stanley kubrick's 2001 space Oddysey, was the ka'baa stone of Mecca.
Such a parallel would infer that Islam is eternal and existed before the beginning of time and after the end of Time.
Just as well the French erected a Pyramind outside the Louvres Museum !
at October 12, 2006 10:41 PM
I cannot understand why they would react in this way, unless they are idolators.
The treat Mohammed as if he is a god, and now they get upset about a stone block? If they are going to claim insult then we have to look more closely at what goes on at the hajj and how it is a pagan ceremony to throw stones at this rock.

Not to long ago I saw a one hour program on A&E or Discovery about the Hajj. I always think of Kubricks 2001 when I see Satan's black rock!
The program documented the THOUSANDS that are killed EVERY year at the Hajj as people stampede forward to throw rocks at the Devil.
Sounds like a fun church service to me! You march around a black rock for hours, cramed together with tens of thousands of sweating muslims, then you get to play the "crushed to death" game to see if you can throw your rock before you become one of the ten thousand or so crushed to death ones!! Sound like "fun" anyone. Want to book your flight for next years games.
Did they think they could march around his rock, throw rocks at him, and then he not kill a few thousand of them just for sport? This would be funny if it werent so sad.
P.S.Kubricks OTHER prophetic movie is "A CLOCKWORK ORANGE" rent it and see for yourself.
Blessings to all my Jewish brethren and my Christian Brothers and Sisters.

Offended at cubic buildings , now ?
You couldn't make it up .
Aren't most buildings cubic / rectangular ? Something to do with maximising internal volume of usable space for the available footprint area . Or has any architect seriously proposed spherical buildings as being a sensible use of resource .
Reminds me a few years ago of those insane courses offered by your more lunatic learning institutions like 'Feminist and Non-Sexist Engineering' and similar ... You know , avoiding hard 'male' concepts in science in favour of female touchy-feely ecofriendly notions . (One wonders if a feminist designed airplane would actually fly)
So now we've to have Islam-sensitive architecture ? What would those buildings look like , precisely ? Are cubic buildings forbidden in Islamic countries , or is it just the West's guilt trip that imagines supersensitivity over trivia while overlooking real issues such as their treatment of women , gays , dhimmi ?

Now cubes are under attack. It was bound to happen.
The set of blocks my niece plays with are suspect. Toy manufacturers must now make only rectangular blocks.
Every Star Trek: The Next Generation episode featruing the evil Borg is suspect, because their spacecraft is shaped like a cube.
A hit movie last year was called "The Cube." Pull it from the video shelves. There will be riots.
No more ice cubes in drinks, even non-alcoholic ones. Oh well, I prefer the cool round ones anyway.
Some pads of notepaper are suspiciously shaped like cubes, too. Act to rid your workplace of these mockeries.
Children must no longer be allowed to draw cubes in geometry class (although I could never get the hang of it .)
And what about those dainty little French cakes called "Petit Fours?" Cubes! An anti-Islamic plot, I have no doubt. Just like those sacreligious abominations, croissants. (BTW, didn't they also come under attack once by certain lunatic Muslim groups?)
The potential to offend is everywhere.

It's only a joke article that made it to Arab news, and was translated by MEMRI. Kinda like when Bert was used on an Islamist poster. I think it's funny, but there is really no Muslim uproar about the cube.

There is however uproar because of the MEMRI article...
