UN peacekeepers unlikely to disarm Hizballah: Russia

A Stop-The-Presses Alert from AFP (thanks to Jeffrey Imm): "UN peacekeepers unlikely to disarm Hezbollah: Russia":

MOSCOW - UN peacekeepers deployed in Lebanon are unlikely to be able to disarm the militant group Hezbollah, as required under UN Security Council Resolution 1701, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov said on Friday, RIA-Novosti reported.

‘Under the UN mandate, one of the main functions of the peacekeepers is to disarm Hezbollah,’ Ivanov was quoted as saying by the state-run news agency. ‘I strongly doubt that the UN will fulfill this task.’

Ivanov said that concern over this aspect of the peacekeepers’ mission was one of the reasons Moscow decided to send a peacekeeping contingent to Lebanon under an accord reached separately with the Lebanese government, instead of under the UN mandate, RIA-Novosti reported.

UN Security Council Resolution 1701 requires the Shia militant group Hezbollah, which fought a 34-day war against Israel in July-August, to disarm.

Peacekeepers are instructed to ensure the south Lebanon border area with Israel is ‘free of any armed personnel and weapons other than those of the Lebanese armed forces and UNIFIL (peacekeepers).’

Hezbollah guerrillas have kept a low profile since the resolution, but refused to disarm.

So? Israel is disarming. That's really what the UN wants anyway. Besides, Hezbollah needs their weapons for defense, and since they're "the party of god" they can be trusted.

Given the great likelihood that it was Russian Spetznatz forces who helped move Saddam's contraband weapons to hiding places in Syria and Lebanon's Bekka Valley, I'm inclined to speculate that this special accord has something to do with making sure Hezbollah doesn't get caught with contraband Russian-manufactured "goods".

"...Moscow decided to send a peacekeeping contingent to Lebanon under an accord reached separately with the Lebanese government..."

I find this development quite ominous.

As I see it, the only reason Russians would go in there is to provide the jihadists technical assistance with advanced weaponry, including surface-to-air missiles to neutralize the Israeli Air Force, and intelligence support against Israeli (and U.S.) positions and movements. The supported weaponry could also include nuclear and biological warheads for Hezbollah's larger missiles or other delivery systems.

The presence of the Russians would also be a diplomatic shield. Any Russians killed in an Israeli raid would trigger an international crisis.

The overall goal seems to be to install a huge and untouchable lethal arsenal as a deterrent to any future Israeli pre-emptive attacks, and to set the stage for the Mohammed's "final solution" for the Jews.

Glory be ! I guess Condi's 'robust plan' has worked !

Mother E,

Russians arming Islamic fanatics with advanced weaponry is pretty dramatic to me.

It probably means that Russia sees itself unambiguously as an enemy of the west. It probably means they seek to inflame global warfare along the lines of the "wars of national liberation" that they ignited during the Soviet era, as a means to demoralize and to drain resources from the west.

On the other hand, maybe it's just "payback" to the U.S. for Afghanistan (the Soviet invasion thereof) coupled with a cynical attempt to ingratiate themselves with the Islamic oil barons. Whatever it is, I think it is unwise to dismiss such Russian mischief-making lightly.

So the League of Nations.....I mean the United Nations is failing to resolve conflict and restrain acts of war huh?

Not surprised in the least.

While it would be nice and comfy not to examine Putin's agenda, it is bloody naive.

Patience, patience. They shall appear eventually.

As for the UN it will be laughable indeed when the fighting starts again and those so-called peacekeepers get shot at by their Hezbolli good buddies. Naturally, those vicious Jews will be blamed for that as well.

seems Russia knows how to deal with the Hez boys, but in the end, they will get bitten by their little minions hezboolaholigans

There are many people in Europe and the US who don't like the way Russia has become since Putin became President.

However, there's one thing that can be said without a shadow of a doubt. Russians will never be dhimmi like Western Europeans are, even though population of Russia is decreasing by hundreds of thousands per year.

In the world stage Russia may act contrary to the interests of the Western world. It is the West and Clinton's foreign policy that are to blame, not Russia and Mr. Putin.

So the UN is useless. That's old news. Yawn.
